| 5 | Migraines | Minor Dizzyness and some minor speech problems (I have learned to slow down and think a few more nanoseconds before speaking)but none of the other major side-effects posted with the drug | I've been taking Topamax for for 1.5 months. My average Imitrex injection rate was 12 per month. Since starting the Topamax, I have had three Imitrex injections, one when I had just started taking the medicine, one after driving for about 12 hours, and the last one after a 17 hour flight. I am feeling better now than I have felt in years. I started at 25Mg/day for 2 weeks and am up to 25Mg 3 times per day. I will stay at this rate for a while to see what happens. I am very happy with Topamax and would recommend it to anyone with migraines. Awful side effects. I experience panic attacks for the first time and I can never go back from them even though I am not on the medication anymore. Severe anxiety, depression to the point that I was almost suicidal, I thought I was going crazy, confusion and more confusion, losing words midsentence, couldn't think of anything to do for work when previously I could write down a whole long list of tasks to get done, brain fog. I must have the worst neurologist on the planet because I specifically told her that I would not take a medication with ANY cognitive side effects. And she said the ONLY Side effect from this rug would be tingling fingers. She downplayed the side effects so much that I didn't even look them up before taking the medication only to think I was going absolutely insane a month later. After a month I looked up the side effects and realized just how extreme they are. I am considering a lawsuit. She gave me these so that I would be able to start running again without having a migraine. But the problem is that this medication takes away my ability to find enjoyment in anything. I haven't even had the desire to go running or even step foot outside because I've been so depressed, my personality is completely gone. I had to have a lower CT scan, and I was about to have an upcoming Cystoscopy for Interstitial Cystitis when I realized that none of this was necessary because my pain was due to the Topamax. Topamax causes bladder irritation and all kinds of urinary problems that I was not aware of. My migraines were decreased by 50% so I'm not happy about this, but everyone needs to realize that not all side effects are printed on the pharmaceutical printout. After 2 months of being on Topomax I find the drug has stopped working. I didn't mention before but it did stop my violent/angry mood swings and hyper mania. At least for awhile. Knowing it works for so many people on weight loss/binge eating, at least i tried it. But the fact that it incresead my appetite and my binge episodes was too much. I had to quit. Imitrex, beta blockers, calcium blockers, Neurontin, Keppra stopped working/never worked. Neurontin + Depakote worked but lowered my white cell count severely. Increasing Depakote worked but I was too tired to even walk. Less Depakote + Topomax + nortryptiline (Pamelor) has done the trick. I still get 2 migraines a week, treat with Maxalt. No more narcotics, Tylenol or aspirin. You have to stop these drugs or you'll keep rebounding. BE SURE to start slowly with Topomax and be patient. So sorry some of you have had bad luck with it. I know how you feel; it took me a long time to get the right drug combination. Now I can think about working again. My brain manages to function fairly well; Topomax dose is up to 150 mg. | F | 53 | 35 days | 3/9/2006 | 5 | migraines | The main side effect I have experienced so far is the tingling in my fingers and in the heels of my feet, mostly in the mornings. The taste of soda has changed a great deal and I have lost a lot of my appetite. I do think that I have had some more trouble concentrating and have had some memory loss however I'm not sure if it's been a tremendous amount or not. I've also experienced the word recall problem but again, I suffered from that issue prior to the medication so I can't attribute this entirely to the Topamax. | Overall I am very pleased with this medication. I have suffered from migraines for many years now without much success from preventative medications.
