FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  osteo I experienced every side effect imaginable, and all that are listed on the other comments sent in...This drug should be tested further and as well as actonel since i was on that also,,2 months on these poisons and my body has changed,,I went to er many times, had mri,,,saying shoulder shows arthritis,,,but not too bad, but then why do i have this burning feeling and all the other symptoms listed in all the other ratings...Todays paper now shows Merck is going to probably be sued for this jaw problem..and stated the company knew some of these side effects but does not tell people...so its all for the money not for the patients,,,Please ladies and some gents also DO NOT TAKE THIS PILL IT IS BAD AND NEEDS FURTHER LOOKING INTO TO THE SIDE EFFECTS AND LONG TERM RESULTS. Those of you who say it is wonderful,,well that is great but hope down the road the long term side effects dont attack your bodies...nuff said. F 69 2 days

1  supposedly for osteoporsis effected my lower jaw and have still not stopped burping and I stopped the drug 2 years ago take 1000ml calcium and 1000,ml vitamin d a day, Fosamax is poison as far as I'm concerned, it should be taken off the market , had a bone scan recently and my bones are fine don't think I ever had osteoprosis just because I'm small boned I think they missed diagnosed me, and I never had any broken bones I saw dental surgeon when I started having jaw problems because I have dentures and was going to have pins put in and he said he wouldn't touch me because I was on fosamax , and I just stopped taking it right then, my mouth is a lot better still get some sores but is sure has improved since stop taking fosamax, if I could just get rid of the burping that would be wonderful F 69 4 years

1  Osteopenia back, hip, joint and pain, tiredness and anxiety and, depression. bloated, aching bones & feet. leg swelling.Vertigo. DEVELOPED A HEART MUMMUR. I started taking Fosamax in 2000 as directed by my Dr. as I had ostopenia, took faithfully for 7 years. I developed all the symtoms that are listed. I had expressed my aching back, that was so painful, It took me along time to go to sleep. It hurt all the way through to my pelvic area. bottoms of feet hurt, I developed a heart mummur. I was bloated after eating(I am not overweight), had lots of gas. I was stiff after sitting and was hard to get up.I WAS SO STIFF IN THE MORNINGS IT WAS PAINFUL TO GET OUT OF BED. I just happened to hit upon this page. I wish I had googled Fosamax 7 years ago. I am sorry I have taken the drug and I would not take it for 5 million dollars. That is alot of $$. It is the worst drug I have ever taken. All the pain & problems came on gradually and I attributeD it to getting older. I hope I never make a mistake like this again. I am very disappointed that my Dr. did not take me off the drug sooner and listen to my complaints. I have been off Fosamax f F 69 7 years

1  Osteoporosis Severe pain in body cavity, acid reflux, stabbing feeling between lungs when movement of arms or legs; weakness overall; after taking only one pill. Needless to day I have not taken another one nor do I intend to take it or anyother of this type. I advised my doctor and the hospital doctors that the only different thing in my life was taking Fosamax. To that they said it couldn't possibly be the Fosamax after only one dose. Spent an entire day in ER with all tests; ekg; ultrasound; cat scan, blood work; x-rays and the like. $8,000 later, the outcome was "source of pain unknown". The only thing that I had changed was taking Fosamax on Sunday. Pain started Monday. F 69 1 days

1  Osteopenia I took two doses of Fosamax, a week apart as prescribed. After the second dose I developed severe bone and joint pain aching over my entire body. My husband suggested I check for side effects of my new medicine and sure enough, it is a side effect. I will not take any more of the Fosamax! I just hope the pai, swelling and stiffness stop soon.  1  diagnosed osteoporosis Took the pill in AM by that evening severe pain in sternum and right rib cage. Then head ache. Thought I was having a heart attack. Pain increased to upper right side front to back. Then legs got shakey and painful to walk, stayed in bed. Called regular Doctor for appointment. I am usually very active. Horses care. Home and pets, etc., No more. Never had a broken bone I didn't earn. Doctor said stay home and rest for a couple of weeks. This is a dangerous drug for anyone who has a life. I'm going to analyze every osteoporosis drug before I will even think about using another. BTW. Was told doctors prescribe that due to medical insurance requirements. F 69 1 days

1  prevent osteoporosis None. After reading this site, I didn't have prescription filled and informed doctor on next visit that I had no intention of taking such a drug. Doctor said that side effects were magnified by trial lawyers and that a minimal number of patients experienced side effects. I told Dr. that I was a trial lawyer before retiring and that drug company manufacturing Fosamax did not set aside a Fosamax legal reserve fund for no reason at all. It is a drug with problems and Drs. should at least provide reasonable pros and cons to patients. F 69 0 days

1  Osteoporosis Pain in arms, buttocks, groin, hips, arms, knees, calves, shins, hives on upper torso, feeling of "something" crawling on me. Recently had cortisone in L arm and steroid in R arm and after 3 months of limited movement (getting dressed was a painful ordeal) my arms are much better. Painful to walk after sitting for awhile with the need to stand in one place until pain subsides. Knee pain was so severe that I had Arthroscopic surgery on both knees, which did little to eliminate pain in L knee. My ribs become dislocated easily and I get muscle strains frequently. Doctor recommended P.T. but therapist dismissed me after 6 sessions because nothing improved. I stopped taking Fosamax 2 years ago when I read about Osteonecrosis but doctor convinced me, after 10 months off the drug, that I needed bone protection for my severe Osteo, so I started it again then discontinued for good 2 months ago. I am also on a nutritional program and am feeling much better and hope for continual improvement. My L knee which was so bad I was considering a knee replacement has improved so much I can now bend it and walk down stairs w/o pain. Groin/hip/buttocks pain are better as well as the hives/rash. I will take my chances w/o Fosamax or any other bisphosphonate just to have my life back. Merck needs to be held accountable. I only hope we can all get back to who we were before Fosamax.  1  Osteoporosis I took 70 mg. once a week for approximately 3 months. Side affects started after 2 months. Not realizing it could be the Fosamax I kept taking it for another 3 weeks and quit taking it today after I researched the side affects and read the reviews on "Ask A Patient". I first experienced horrible jaw pain that comes and goes and is now more prominent in both jaws. I'm having nasty flu like symptoms (aching muscles, nausea, tired, headaches). Luckly, at my age I don't take any prescription medication. The only change I've made is the Fosamax; horrible stuff. I'm ordering the book ""Vitamin K2 and the Calcium Paradox"". A patient I met at NJH in Denver overheard my conversation about me starting Fosamax. He introduced himself and told me his horror story with Fosamax and to get the book and try Vitamin K2 (for bones) with a combination of 100mg. calcium and 1000 iu's of fish oil. What the heck do I have to loose, it's not poison like Fosamax and the gentleman I met swears K2 is helping him. I should have researched and read the Fosamax reviews and side affects before I started taking this nasty drug. Fosamax is a miserable drug. F 69 3 months

5  Low Bone Density Results/Osteopenia I have not had any side effects. Fosamax has stopped my bone loss, it did not progress any further until I took Arimidex (after-cancer treatment) for 6 months, which resulted in lower bone density results after my last Dexascan recently. Have since stopped the Arimidex and will discuss how to proceed with my doctor. F 68 6 years
