FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  osteopenia, osteoporosis None that I'm aware of. I am 62 years old, small-boned, white, and 5 feet tall. I began taking Fosamax 2 years after my last period when I had a BMD done and my bones were really bad for my age at that time - 52. I have taken Fosamax for almost 10 years, beginning with the 10mg a day, then switching to the 70mg once a week. I always take it as prescribed, and have tolerated it very well. After 2 years of taking it, my bone density improved without changing my lifestyle. I continued to get checked every 2 years, and the improvement has slowly leveled out. My last BMD (this month) showed no improvement. While I have had no problems from Fosamax, I am concerned about continuing on this medication if it's not doing any more good. I am considering stopping it, and continuing with my weight-lifting, good diet, good lifestyle. F 62 10 years

3  SEVERE OSTEOPOROSIS MY LEGS SEEMS TO BE MORE STIFF AFTER TAKING FOSAMAX I HAD EXCELLENT BONES BEFORE MY HYSTERECTOMY/CASTRATION. ANYONE WHO GETS A HYSTERECTOMY/CASTRATION WILL DEFINITELY HAVE TO TAKE SOMETHING FOR THEIR BONES. SORRY, BUT THAT IS THE WAY IT IS. NO DOCTOR WILL TELL YOU THIS ABOUT THIS TERRIBLE SURGERY. SO WE ARE STUCK WITH FOSAMAX OR SOMETHING LIKE IT. F 62 1 years

3  osteopenia Having seen this site I'm now wondering if the tiredness (ever present) and the problem with my eyes ( no tears now) is due to taking this drug for the last 8 months.Ialso get lots of pain in my wrist but put that down to a break I had last year- perhaps not! Anyone else had eye problems? I've never had them before - I feel so fed up most days - not the girl I was!! F 62 8 months

2  Osteopenia Shortly after beginning a Fosamax regimen (once a week), I began experiencing mild to moderate stomachaches, heartburn, and constipation. I have been on this regimen now for five months, and have not experienced any improvement in my back pain, which, according to my primary care physician, is due to bulging discs. Interestingly enough, I also experienced a five month plateauing in my weight loss , which, up to this point, had been slow, but steady. I had joined Weight Watchers some ten months before beginning Fosamax, and had managed to lose close to 20 pounds. I have stuck to the regimen, and I exercise two to three times a week at Curves, but have noticed no significant weight loss. I discontinued the use of Fosamax for two weeks and lost two pounds. Coincidence? Maybe, but when I resumed taking the drug, I stopped losing weight and the stomachaches and heartburn increased in frequency . I plan to discontinue the drug and consult my physician.  2  Osteoporosis reading of -2.5 1st dose on a Sat.-Tues. evening lower back pain that worked it way up to my neck. Very tender right knee which I attritubed to working in the yard. Took Pepcid's and Buffrin. Controlled the pain ok. 2nd dose on following Sat. - Sunday night could not get out of bed. Entire back was sending sharp pains. Actually cried out in pain. Husband helped me stand and layered pillows so something would be supporting my back. I came to within 5 seconds of passing out from pain. Right knee in worse pain. Had Xanax in medicine cabinet, took one and was able to make it through the night. Same severe pain the next morning. I am now waiting for a call-back from my doctor. Had this same unbearable pain (worse than childbirth) 6 years ago with one dose of Actonel. I know it helped my mother (87 yrs old) so I can't say it is bad for everyone. My daughter is finishing her MD residency in June and is researching for me. She said reclast by-passes the GI tract and may be easier to take but I am afraid to do anything at this time.  2  osteopenia Developed painful constipation/hard stools within first week. Had to take gross stool softener. After third dose, came down with fever, chills and back/hip aches. Immediately made the connection between symptoms and Fosomax. Don't think I'm going to take it anymore, even though I trust the doctor who prescribed it. I plan to find natural alternatives to Fosomax. F 62 3 weeks

1  Osteoporosis It started with a slight pain in my muscles and bones each time I took a weekly dose. After a couple of months I developed such an excruciating pain in my bones and muscles that I couldn't move or stand. My Pharmacist informed me to stop taking Fosamax immediately and the pain slowly disappeared over several weeks. But I had to take Painkillers in the meantime to make it thru this ordeal. On a scale from 1 thru 10 the pain was a 10. I will go back to my own vitamin concoction, because I didn't experienced pain before taking Fosamax. I wish I had known the terrible side effects of Fosamax F 62 1 years

1  osteapenia Took this drug for about three years. Took one tab weekly and was very careful to take it as prescribed. Still had stomach problems. Had severe stomach pain which I thought was an ulcer when eating a full meal in the early evening. I learned to recognize the oncoming pain and would take zantac immediately which seemed to help. Chocolate also was a trigger to the pain. Being concerned with taking this drug the rest of my life I decided to stop. The stomach pain has disappeared completely. It has now been two years since I stopped the drug and have not had a stomach pain in that entire time. When on the drug it had been common, a couple times a week, and severe enough that I could not lie down after eating. F 62 3 years

1  broke hip while rollerblading Severe leg pain - often feels as if the pain is deep in muscles; hip and knee pain; hair loss; small red spots on skin that will not go away; weight gain; most recently both jaws feel as if they are dislocated; bones in feet hurt terribly; swollen joints and muscle weakness. All symptons began after going on Fosamax. I've had numerous tests for these pains including MRI's, total body bone scans, injections of cortisone in joints, physical therapy for several months. Nothing worked. After doing research on Fosamax, I'm positive this is what has caused me such agony. The only other medicine I take is a very small dose of premarin. F 62 7 years

1  Osteoperosis Left hand seems to have tightened up after a few years of improvement following a stroke, Tenderness in gums, needed scale cleaning twice in a short time span. I complained to my dentist that I was having trouble with my teeth in spite of taking good care of them. She then asked if I was still taking Fosamax; when I said "yes," she shook her head. I also had a tooth break, I wonder if that's from the Fosamax. Bone scan tests still show that I have Osteoperosis. F 62 4 years

1  Osteopenia I took my first Fosamax on a Saturday morning. On Sunday morning I could hardly get out of bed. My back was very sore, but the worst problem was my left hand. I have osteoarthritis in my left thumb joint and it was so sore I could not use the hand. On Sunday night I got the chills and hurt all over my body. Monday the thumb joint was swollen and still very very sore. I have a pretty high pain tolerance but this is terrible. I will not take another Fosamax and will opt for healther eating and exercise. Do not take this drug! 62 1 days

1  Supposed osteoporosis prevention Fosamax damaged my mother in extreme and numerous ways. A couple of years after taking it, her jaw/teeth began to become deformed. They became so bad that she needed all her teeth pulled out. For a year, she could not eat solid food. Now, she has dentures, but it's been very problematic, too, and she can still barely eat. She's been emaciated for a long time. Also, she has serious GI issues, chronic pain all over, and many other painful, severe medical problems. She is only in her early 60s, but is in much worse condition than people decades older. In short, Fosamax has made her face/jaw deformed (ONJ), made her lose all her teeth, caused long-term emaciation, chronic pain, and much more. She is homebound and barely living because of Fosamax. It's caused a host of severe, life-threatening disabilities for her. Do not take this extremely damaging drug. My mother's NP told her to take it supposedly for osteoporosis prevention, when she didn't even need it. It's shocking that a drug intended for good, unnecessarily, has basically ruined her life, deformed her, and caused much pain and disability. We're still looking for an attorney for her. I've called a number of attorneys, but they all said they're not taking Fosamax cases. Are there any attorneys taking Fosamax cases in the Bay Area, CA? Justice must be served for the severe damage and disability it caused my mother. F 62 4 years
