FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  osteoporosis After 6 mos.I loss 25% of body my weight and had sore spot in my stomach. Stopped taking it. Colonoscopy revealed inflamed area in colon. Resumed taking it. After 3 months back on it, I have pain in both hips and my right foot feels like I think a fallen arch might feel. Walking, sitting, and lying down is difficult. I'm not taking it! Why are the practicing physycians not monitoring these problems with this drug? Where is the FDA? We have to take responsibility for our health but we SHOULD be able to trust doctors and FDA.  1  medium bone density loss I've been on 70 mg. for just about 3 years. There were no side effects that I was aware of until recently although I did have some bad burning of my stomache with no apparent reason. I just had my wisdom teeth extracted 11 weeks ago and had persistent pain on the side of my gum. The oral surgeon diagnosed it as osteonecrosis of the jaw. My jaw bone is exposed and they can't operate on it because I run the risk of having a large hole that will take a long time to heal. I'm now on 1000 mg of penicillin/day and a mouth rinse twice a day. The pain and discomfort will continue, possibly for months, until the area heals itself. I had no idea this could happen!I stopped taking it as soon as I found out that it's a side effect of Foxamax. I'm going with calcium pills. My second bone density test was normal so it must have helped but had I known about ONJ I might have chosen another route. F 59 3 years

1  osteoporosis experienced burning in the balls of my feet[almost had nerves severed to relieve severe burning]-pain in upper back-headache for 6 months[kept going to chiropractor,no relief. Also bloating-acid reflux. My mother was also taking fosamax and spent 6 weekends in the ER with difficulty breathing and swelling of the tongue-although she takes no other meds Drs did not make the connection between the Fosamax and her symptoms. They put her through all kinds of tests-no answers. I discovered this website and we both discontinued the Fosamax-all our symptoms disappeared. now Drs want me to take once/yr infusion of Reclast-it really scares me! has anyone had any experience with this drug F 59 12 months

1  Osteopenia My doctor prescribed Fosamax due to my dexascan. After reading about the side effects, I decided not to take it and to reseach other possibilities of increasing my bone density. Check out www.osteopenia3.com - a great site. F 59 0 days

1  osteoporosis and bad left hip I am 59 and began taking foxamax one year ago, and because after one year my doctor told me that my bone density had increased 4% (except for my left hip which "decreased" 5%). I kept taking it for another year but have noticed that in this past year I not only broke my knee on a simple fall, but my bones ache all over and am experiencing excruciating pain in the tail bone region of my spine. A male friend of mine was also taking this for nearly a year but stopped when he began having severe lower back pain. Unfortunately, my friend acquired brain & lung cancer a few months ago and is now deceased but, ironically perhaps, he also learned that he acquired cancer in his lower back as well. This worries me about the fosamax & rest assure, I will never take this medicine again and regret that I've taken it so long. Now I wonder if it has cancer-causing chemicals that we were not told about! I recommend that this is taken off the market because so many of our elderly are not aware of how it may be hurting them instead of helping them. I would like to see a class-action law suit come out of this. F 59 2 years

1  osteopenia I started taking Fosamax about 4 months ago. I would get slightly dizzy at the beginning. After 4 months, I was getting so bad I almost fell twice in the shower. I went to my doctor, who took me off Fosamax and gave me a prescription for 25mg Meclizine, which is for vertigo. It helps a little but hasn't cleared up totally. She also examined me for ear problems and anything else that may have caused this, but didn't find any. I have tried to analyze if anything else could have caused this problem, but haven't come up with any other reason other than this all started when I started taking the Fosamax. I would NOT recommend this to anyone, unless you are in desparate need of it. Ask your doctor if you can take Vitamin D and Calcium instead. Also, weight bearing excercises can help in some instances. The study done by the company says that this medicine does not cause dizziness. Well, I know for a fact that this is wrong, and I wish I would have followed my instict and not taken it. I can only hope that this condition will clear itself up. M 59 4 months

1  Osteoporosis Flu-like symptoms began about 12 hours after one dose. I ached in every joint, had chills for hours, then realized I had a fever about three degrees above my normal temperature. 24 hours later, I felt better, but fear its not over after reading these comments. I am afraid to take this drug even though osteoporosis scares me. I think I will try to change my diet and take good nutritional supplements, but skip Fosamax. F 59 1 days

1  osteopenia Severe neck, shoulder, upper back pain Can anyone help me? How long will this pain go on?? Doctors don't seem to know and the Drug Company was not helpful. I was on Fosamax for 7 years and in pain for 6 months before discovering (for myself) that severe pain can be a side effect of Foxamax. The pain immediately diminished after I stopped taking the drug, but now seems to have reached a plateau and is with me always. I have been off Fosamax for 4 months. Will the pain ever go away???  4  osteopenia None that I can recall. I was on it about 6 months, then my insurance deductible allowed Evista, so I switched only because Evista is said to help prevent breast cancer. F 58 6 months

3  Osteoporosis For four years I took the daily 10mg dose of fosamax. I lost my insurance and stopped taking the drug. Five months later I was able to reinstate my insurance. My doctor switched me to the once a week 70mg dose. After two months my jaw began to ache big time just below the ear. My knees were also hurting and swelling. I found this site and looked for the sore jaw complaint. I found a few but I found alot to bone ache complaints. I stopped the 70mg dose and the knees went back to normal and the jaw pain subsided. I waited 5 months before trying the 10mg daily dose again. I am 30 days into this and do not have the side effects of the 70mg dose. M 58 6 years

3  Osteopenia Aching and swelling in legs especially knees, pain in shoulders, hips and feet. For the past 18 months I have been seeing orthopedics, rheumatologists and endocrinologists. I have had physical therapy, MRIs, sonograms and batteries of blood test for auto-immune diseases to figure out what was wrong with me. Everyone knew I was taking Fosamax. No one suggested I stop and see if my symptoms improve. I was always very active and full of energy. Now I can barely get myself moving and it takes everything in me to get motivated. I'm tired and depressed. My cousin suggested I stop the Fosamax as she developed severe chest pain when she was on it. I have been taking the 70mg weekly doses but I have decided to stop it and wait and see what happens. I'd rather use natural methods to help my bones and feel my old self again. F 58 10 years

3  preventative! Between this and Diovan (BP med) I guess I'm getting hit both ways! Tired, joint stiffness, hot spot in roof of mouth, sore throat etc. etc. I was prescribed Fosamax more as a preventative - I have had 3 normal bone density tests (the proper one)at the 2nd one, I showed increased bone density BEFORE taking Fosamax....it was at that time Dr. suggest I take it since: I am slender, white, had a hysterectomy at 40 & the dreaded "I smoke" sin! I have had my recent bone density this year (2008) normal, don't need another for 5 years, I cannot remember a broken bone in my female said of the family, and believe me, I have a huge family.....I think this stuff can go in the trash. I think I read somewhere as to the effectiveness or lack of, after 5 years anyway(?) I've had it! F 58 6 years

3  Thin bones I have been taking Fosamax for only 2 months. Everything has gone fine except about a month after taking it, my hair stopped growing in. It isn't falling out, it just isn't growing back in places and I am getting bald spots. I have decided to stop the medicine for 3 months and see if it makes a difference. Has anyone else had this problem? F 58 2 days

2  osteopenia Sudden difficulty swallowing after 2 months taking Fosamax weekly. No other symptoms. I had constant low-grade pain in my sternum, burped a lot, some reflux, and felt like something was stuck in my throat. I tried anti-acid with no impact whatsoever. After two weeks, I suspected Fosamax and stopped. My symptoms were mostly gone two weeks later. I'll see my doctor in two months and decide if I should try again. F 58 2 months

2   After being on Alendronate for one year for osteoporisis/osteopenia, I have started to feel stiff and achey in my legs/knees. Old muscle injuries have flared too. I'm so stiff that it's hard to get out of a chair. I can improve the symptons if I take higher amounts of calcium, making me wonder if the alendronate is starving my muscles of calcium hence the pain and fatigue. My doctor recommended that I stop taking my weekly pill for 2 months. I've been off for three weeks and I feel better, more energy and I can exercise again. I'm using home ultrasound to help sore sites recover. I'm supposed to take another dose in five weeks as a test to see if symptoms return, not sure if I will pursue this. i.e. Is there any damage? Thank you to everyone for helping me see this could be the fosamax/alendronate causing my symptoms. F 58 1 years

2  osteopenia I have taken Fosamax for 5 weeks. I have not had any adverse reactions until last week while on vacation in Italy. I suspected that the red itchy spots on my face and neck were insect bites. But I only got a new one each day. But now I am home and got a new one on my leg. Could this be skin problem be a reaction to Fosamax? F 58 5 weeks

2  osteopenia I have had an increase in back, neck and hip pain; infrequent but severe leg cramps; dry eyes that have caused blured vision and floaters; an increase in sinus problems and most recently I have experienced intermittent, severe jaw pain. My doctor said with HRT and Fosamax, my bone density scan improved but I question whether this medication is worth the risks. I noticed when I stopped the drug for 6 mos against doctor's advice, the pain increased. I wish I had never started Fosamax. F 58 4 days
