FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  osteopenia I took the medicine exactly as prescribed. No problem for years except for stiff joints occasionally (was tested for RA and others). The joint problems went away and just recently I have been diagnosed with GERD and after an upper endoscopy I have stomach ulcers, stomach polyp, esophageal rings, weak lower esophageal sphincter which causes sore throat, irritated esophagus, ear ache that will not go away! Please post if you have a solution to this! I have been on a strict diet and lost 12 pounds so far ( Now weigh 109), but nothing helps!!! I would not recommend taking this medicine. I trusted my doctors but they do not take time to read posts like this. F 48 7 years

1  ospeopenia in my hip Acid reflux, heartburn, irritable bowl syndrome - alternating constipation and diahrea, loose bowels, muscle pains, worsening migraines. Stop taking this immediately. The side effects are horrible the more you read about it. I'm still trying to work it out of my system after I stopped taking it about 2 months ago when I realized it was the cause of my symptoms. My doctor put me on this medication because of a slight loss of bone density in my hip caused by Aromasin that I have been taking for breast cancer. Now I take a full regimen of a bone building multi vitamin (containing calcium, boron, magnesium), Vitamin D3 (lots), Vitamin K, Stronthium, Iprivlavone and Black Cohosh (for menopausal symptoms). I won't know the results of this natural regimen until my next bone scan but anything has to be better than Fosamax! F 48

1  Osteopenia Sharp stomach pains, acid reflux, heartburn. I am worried about this drug. I have been recently diagnosed with Osteopenia in my hip; but after just two weeks on Fosamax, I have had severe symptoms mid-week between dosages. Now I am feeling worse each week--I feel like I am going to throw up all the time. And, I am NEVER sick, so it is definitely a new and scary pattern for me. F 48 7 weeks

1  Osteoperosis I have only been taking this for 4 weeks. I feel like I have mild flu all the time- aching. I also have very bad leg cramps for the day or two after taking the drug. I have become weak and have feet and ankle swelling. I have a call into the Dr re: what to do. There must be a med that doesn't have these side effects. Ugh! F 48 4 weeks

1  bone loss in both hips I actually started fosamax just this morning. After reading the below side effects, I do not believe I will be taking another. I already have pain and really do not want to experience any other side effects from a drug. Are we trying to increase our way of living? All the generations before us did not have these type things available to them and yes they may have suffered from OP and lots of other diseases, but they led an uninhibited life without causing other things to be disrupted in their systems. I had a hysterectomy 8 years ago and have been on natural compounded hormones for the last 6 years. From the bone density test, I now have loss in both hips (quite a bit so the doctor says). I am already experiencing severe pain in my hips, back and legs, so I am not sure I want to take on the challenge of more pain. Can anyone give any information for weight loss during this trying time? Thanks to everyone for the info. Pam Jones F 48 1 days

1  osteoporosis Terrible joint pain especially in ankles. I took fosamax for about 5 months before I figured out that it may be the cause of my joint pain. At times my joints got so bad that I couldn't walk. As soon as I stopped taking the drug, my legs started feeling better and they continue to improve. Where before I was taking pain medication multiple times per day, I now only need it occassionally and I'm hopeful that I can stop altogether sometime soon. M 48 5 months

3  osteopenia Major dizziness (vertigo) ?pain in left hip Tiredness headaches I have been taking fosamax for about six years now. Everything was fine untill the last year. I suffered a severe bout with vertigo, felt tired, fog brained, stiff at times. About 4 mo. ago I stopped taking the drug and was feeling much better. My bone scan showed a decrease in mass so I began taking it again about 3 wks ago. The dizziness has returned, along with headaches and fatigue. I consulted my Dr. about alternative meds. F 47 6 days

2  Low Bone Density Back and neck flammation and pain and right arm and hand pain with cramps. Although I've had previous neck problems, I never experienced back and arm pain. After reading other comments and concerns about fosamax, I believe the FDA needs to re-evaluate the effectiveness of this drug. Also, my doctor won't re-check my bone density for another year. Therefore, I don't know at this point if the drug is even working! F 47 1 years

1  osteoporosis Took for 1 year. Initially no side effects. At about 6 months, sudden sharp pains in epigastric area but infrequent. At 9 months, almost constant dull epigastric pain and burning up the esophagus and into the throat. Also bilateral hip pain and stiffness esp. after sitting. I was only 46 when started and have been very athletic all my life. My mother has been on Fosamax now 10 years. She has had upper back pain, hip pain, insomnia, horrible esophageal reflux with frequent, prolonged laryngitis, and frequent flu-like symptoms. None of her doctors ever admitted that any of this was from the fosamax, nor did they tell her to stop. My grandmother also had osteoporosis but lived till age 90 with osteoporotic fractures only in her last years of life. LET'S WAKE UP SISTERS! Taking this is ridiculous! F 47 1 days

1  osteoporosis excruciating heartburn, trouble swallowing, change in taste, heart palpitations, body aches, increased blood pressure. I am so done with osteoporosis meds. Even though I only took this for 4 weeks and haven't taken it for 2; I still have all of these side effects; at this point I would rather have a broken hip than deal with all this(ok not really but you know what I mean) I was previously on Boniva and had no issue with it until after I had my gall bladder out-then it caused heartburn too. I took myself off the fosamax, I'm taking a good calcium supplement, have increased my exercise. F 47 4 weeks

1  To increase bone mass (OP) After only 3 months of once a week doses I started having severe jaw pain. I stopped immediately but the pain in my upper and lower jaw (right side) is daily getting worse. Eating, talking, brushing teeth and impact movements such as walking all exacerbate the pain. Tylenol & ibuprofen make it only slightly bearable. It has negatively impacted my life in a debilitating way. F 47 3 months

1  osteoporosis First 70mg weekly dose was taken Sunday morning as directed. Was fine until Wednesday at 2:00 P.M. I started to experience flu like symtoms (all joints and muscles ached) and nausea. Plan on looking at natural methods to treat. Has anyone taken any herbs for at least a year and noticed no icrease of bone lost with their annual bone density scan?? M 47 1 weeks

1  osteopenia SEVERE joint pain. Shoulder, elbow, knee. Aching ankles. Debilitating pain in rib cage! Pain in elbow is so bad I can barely lift a cup of coffee. Thank God for this website, I thought I was either crazy or dying. Too bad it took 7 months to figure out what was happening. I called my doctor tell him I was stopping the medication and spoke to the Triage Nurse who had the same type of side effects when she was on Fosamax. I would like to know why doctors don't make these side effects more well known to patients since it's been an issue from day one. After suffering for half a year, I'm looking forward to feeling like a human being again. I just hope it doesn't take too long. M 47 7 months

1  Osteopenia My primary care prescribed this, I have taken this exactly 2 months (not on anything else). My hair has started to fall out in globs, I have begun to have numbness in my left foot (I don't have diabetes) and now have dark circles under my eyes. All this started since I began taking fosamax. I just had blood work and all my levels are great so no issues. I do not recommend this medication, too many side effects. F 47 60 days

5  osteopenia Recently I am getting gastric side effects and am considering stopping and continuing on with calcium, vit d, vit k, boron, managanese, copper, zinc, magnesium, and silicon because they build bone. I recommend doing these while taking fosamax too. However, this medication has helped me tremendously. I had so much spine pain I was unable to do many things for years and I was getting worse. I now can go to the gym twice a week and can actually use the upper body weights and machines - something I could not do even though I'd try. If you are having chronic pain without taking it and find out you have low bone density, I would recommend trying it. I had to sleep sitting up -couldn't lay down- and the bones in the back of my head hurt to even talk before taking fosamax. The pain gradually lessened over time. I now sleep flat in my bed-couldn't do that for 7 years! I am much more active than I was the 10 years prior to taking it. F 46 1 years

4  osteoporosis none Can't blame my occasional acid reflux on it since I had that before too. I have hypothyroid (medication for that helped contribute to the low bone density) and now am having problems with high platlet count. Was checking in here if it could be related but don't see anyone else with this problem. It does sound like the aching in my left pelvis could be a combo of fossamax & the doctor drilling there for bone marrow recently. F 46 22 months

1  Osteoporosis After taking generic Fosamax (70mg)I noticed blurried vision and slight heartburn on the first day. Upon awakening on the second day it was as if I had been ran over by a truck! The pain was horrible. Flu like and an extreme headache. Can hardly get out of the bed! I will not take this drug again. I am going to look into diet and natural sources to combat my osteoporosis. I have tried Forteo but the cost is too great. Health food store here I come when I can leave the house. From what I have been reading this is a very dangerous drug. Should be pulled from the market.
