FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Osteopenia Very sore muscles & swollen joints; insomnia; dry eyes; rash on leg; stomach bloating & weight gain; loss of energy; tiredness; foot pain/numbness; severe shoulder & neck pain; heart problems I am following-up to my 2 previous posts to this website. I contacted my doctor and told him that I did not think I had Fibromyalgia but that all my muscle pain for the last 5 years was from the Fosamax and he was very surprised of my theory. He checked his hand-held computer gadget which lists side effects of drugs and there was no severe muscle or joint pain listed...the main side effect listed was problems with the esophagus. He gave me the telephone # of Merck to report my side effects. Their telephone # is 1-800-994-2111 if anyone else is interested in filing their reports. The customer service rep at Merck said many of my symptoms were found in their clinical trial studies....I guess the doctors or patients are not being informed of ALL the side effects. F 54 5 years

1  as a supposed preventative measure joint and all over muscle and bone aches, with mild gastric upset This is the same pharmaceutical company[MERCK]that manufactured the killer anti-inflammatory that was taken off the market not long ago. The adverse effects of Fosamax are too many and too serious, some of which are even FATAL, such as kidney failure. I think it's mostly another scheme of the pharmaceutical industry to make money at any cost. As for now, my general health is really good for my age, so I am stopping this horrible medication. I'm too young to experience the Fosamax-induced geriatric sickness. F 54 2 months

1  Osteoporosis Terrible stomach and bowel pain, contractions, and now constant nagging pain right through the colon, with milder contractions, for over one week. Noticable narrowing of the colon. I think this drug builds up calcium reserves, but not necessarily on the bone. In my case, possibly, it collected in my colon, with agonizing results. F 54 4 months

1  for osteopenia I experienced extreme chest pain. Thought I was having a heart attack. Was taken to the emergency room 2 times. Even had an angiogram, because the doctors couldn't find the source of the pain. I asked them about taking Fosamax in the emergency room, and they said it couldn't cause chest pain. I feel this drug is very dangerous, and strongly recommend that it not be prescribed to anyone. F 54 14 days

1  osteopenia If the person who had "torus mandibularis" will post her e-mail address, I will write to you about a similar thing that happened to me on Actonel. (I'd rather not post my e-mail address; but will write to you if you post yours.) I think I have a little bone spur inside the mouth after taking Actonel for one year. Actonel is essentially the same drug as Fosamax. Let's compare notes! If you don't want to give your e-mail address, just post another comment on this website. Has your dentist said anything further about it? F 54 1 years

1  osteopenia & osteoporosis Like others, every bone in my body hurts. Was very althetic, competed with people in their 30's, but now feel older than mom, who's 80! Start as osteopenia. Bone scan was just little better after first year. 2nd year, spine just slightly better, but hip went from osteopenia to osteoporosis?!! Just found out this drug works by shutting down your system and building new bones over old (eventually old growth can collapse). Also it can cause jawbone rot (osteonecrosis). Upset that drug co. or dr. never mentioned these! Quitting cold turkey! F 54 2 years

1  bone lose in hip After going through MRI and Xrays for hip and knee pain and cramping on the same side as the hip pain, began to hear about this as a common side effect. Stopping Fosamax and contacting my doctor. Disappointed that she and my OBGYN did not associate the symptoms with the pain! F 54 2 months

1  Doctor prescribed it Severe pain in neck and arm; esophagial discomfort; I heard a man talking in the doctor's office about his wife's experience with fosomax and that there were lawsuits against it. I asked him some questions and when he said that it does not build back bone, I started investigating on my own as well as seeing the red flags I should have already spotted. It has me convinced that fosomax is not for me. I am off it now and will explore more natural ways to heal. F 54 2 years

1  osteoporosis Shoot me now. I took my first generic tablet on Wednesday. By that night, I was feeling a little achy. That grew into full flu-like symptoms: achy muscles, sneezing, coughing, very sore muscles and now very uncomfortable stomach pain. Today is Saturday and I just want to lay down and die. I hope this exits my system soon. It's poison, sure and true. I was taking the generic after my insurance company told me that Actonel costs $152/ three months v. $3.36 for Fosamax generic. I'd rather break a hip. F 54 1 days

1   Refused to take. My former doctor was pushing this drug to me. I refused to take it. People who want to explore natural cures without those side effects can try to take calicum, vitamin k2, magnesium, and strontium. Just don't take calicum and strontium at the same time since they compete with each other for absorption. Take strontium 3 hours after your last meal in the evening. That's what I am going to do. Good luck to all! F 54 0 days

1   I was prescribed Fosamax generic for Osteopenia. The side effects of this drug are as bad as any with arthritis. I hurt from head to toes.I quit taking it in Nov and still have pain. I have pain in my legs, hips, back, groin area and was having severe pain in my chest that almost sent me to the ER. I also had to have family member pull me up out of a sitting position and could barely walk up my steps. The pain in my chest would last three to four hrs. I did not know that all of my other pain was due to the Fosamax until I started researching the chest pain and a light bulb went off. I have been off of it for 2 mos. and still having severe back pain. I went to the urgent care this weekend with sever back pain. Just wish I knew how long it is going to last. So sick of being in pain. I have told everyone I know not to take this med and to tell anyone they know.It is definatley poison. F 54 8 months

1  Prevention of osteoporosis Started out with a swollen middle finger on right hand and moved to my feet. Feet felt numb and very sore. Within 1-2 months of taking Fosamax, pain moved to all my muscles and my joints in my whole body. Thought I had MS or some awful disease I felt so bad. Usually a very active person & now I felt like a crippled 90-year old. Had blood tests--everything turned out negative. Experienced abdominal bloating, insomnia & felt horrible. Doctor NEVER MENTIONED or even suggested it was from the Fosamax. He diagnosed me as having Fibromyalgia. I posted an earlier feedback, but since I have been on it a lot longer than most of you (5 years), please feel free to email me if you wish to get more information. I went off the Fosamax for 10 months without my doctor knowing about it. I started to feel normal during those 10 months and all my pain went away--then, it dawned on me that it probably was the Fosamax that had caused all this horrible pain for 5 years. Recently had a dexascan and it revealed that my bone loss was down 5% from 2 years ago when I had the last scan. My doctor urgently told me that I needed to stay on Fosamax for the rest of my life & was going to add a nasal spray in addition to the Fosamax. I refused the nasal spray but for the heck of it, agreed taking the Fosamax. I didn't want to get osteoporosis and break a hip!! He had me scared! So, after being off of it for 10 months, I went on it again. This week (Nov 9,2005) after being on it for 2 weeks, I am feeling crippled. Joints are swollen once again; I'm in excruciating pain my entire body--especially my shoulders, hands and feet. I am calling my doctor this week & am going to confront him straight on F 54 5 years

1  Prevent osteoporosis I have been taking Fosamax for 5 years during which time I have experienced very sore muscles and joints. My doctor diagnosed this as being Fibromyalgia....not a side affect of the Fosamax. My doctor then prescribed me muscle relaxants for the Fibromyalgia. I had trouble sleeping, sharp pains throughout my body (especially in the morning and at night) and have experienced many nights of insomnia. My doctor then prescribed me Ambien (sleeping aid) to help me sleep. Last fall, I started to have trouble breathing and they took me off Fosamax immediately, uncertain if that was the main cause to the problem. I went through testing to see if my difficulty of breathing was related to my esophagus, and the tests were negative. I then made a decision to stay off the Fosamax, muscle relaxants & Ambien to see if I felt better.....what a major difference!! Experienced no muscle or joint paint, no insomnia and felt like a brand new person. I could actually start jogging again after 5 ye I have suffered for 5 years with taking this medication to no avail. Don't waste your time, money and especially your life by taking this medication.I think the doctors promote these drugs to help the drug companies. They are their priorities. I am going to contact my physician this week and stand up for myself by insisting that I am not going to support drug companies that make me feel worse!! F 54 5 years

1  ostopenia - minimal bone loss - hip I suffered from heartburn regularly and never thought of Fosamax causing it until I stopped taking it. Within a couple of weeks, the heartburn disappeared, my left hip doesn't ache, I am losing some extra pounds that I have put on since being on the drug, less joint aches and much more energy. It was not worth taking the drug. My doctor said at my age, sufficient calcium and vitamin D should help. She did not say for me to stop the drug but after reading this web page a month ago and reading everyone's side effects, made the decision easy for me to make. F 54 3 years

1  osteopenia I have been taking this drug for 4 weeks and feel awful. My whole body aches, I have headaches, my energy level is extremely low, my legs feel weak and the tops of my shoulders are very painful. I have a nasty taste in my mouth and at the end of meals my food comes up into my throat...After these symptoms started i decided to do some research and after reading pages and pages of information on this drug I have decided to stop taking it. With a little research you can find lots of natural treatments, I plan to call my doctor and tell him what I have decided to do and then contact a homeopathic physician and a nutritionist to help me put together a more sensible plan...This drug sounds like poison to me...corrosive, laundry detergent, fertilizer..who in their right mind would ingest these things...we must all be proactive in our medical care...doctors are not Gods! Best of luck to everyone on this site, I am sure that there is another way...read books! Gather information and trust yo F 54 4 days
