FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

For whatever reason today 12 years later have searched the side effects and read other postings. I burst into tears and as I type this I am crying. I think out of relief that I my not be as old as I feel. I will stop taking this drug imediately. I am so sore all the time, and I do believe that I have the same pain as all you others. I will take my chances with my bones. Thank-you all for your input, if it wasnt for you all I may still be suffering. I see a bright future for me now. F 50 12 years

2  Loss of Bone Density I'm rating it a 2 at this time because I've only been taking Fosamax for 8 months and don't know if it has increased my bone density or not. I'd be willing to put up with a little bit of discomfort if it worked. I just stopped taking the once a week pill. The first side effect I noticed was the headaches. They were so bad and lasted so long that I had to change the day I was taking it from Thursday to Saturday because I was going to work feeling terrible. Then started the sore muscles and the bottom of my feet hurting, and the sore joints. A few months ago I started getting itchy. I thought it was dry skin, but my skin isn't dry. The itching was internal. Then my sciatic nerve started bothering me. There are more, but the icing on the cake was this past weekend. I got up Saturday morning, took my pill and drank my water as I always do. I noticed that I felt really very itchy and it was driving my crazy. I had a family function to go to, so I was going to take a shower and when I looked in the mirror I was shocked. My face was swollen and was red with blotches and hives. My neck had red blothces everywhere. My ears were hot and itchy. The itching got worse. Then the heartburn started. I was so scared. I got ready, went to my family function, and told my aunt what was going on. My cousin gave me one of her prescription allergy pills and within 1/2 hour to 45 minutes I was fine. I didn't realize the Fosamax was causing all of this until I read everyone elses comments. It also made me realize why I've been itching for the past 4+ months. I am not going to take it anymore. My doctor is giving me Actonel to try. I'm going to see if I can find any side effects on that drug so I know what to watch out for. F 50 8 months

2  beginning of osteoporosis While I didn't experience any of the usual side effects listed on the warnings, I did have frightening episodes of my heart racing and irregular heartbeats. I reread the warnings thinking I may have missed that. I certainly think this should be added. So thankful for this website to see other women have experinced the same symptons. And, after reading what everyone has been through will never take this medication again and will try to find alternative answers. F 50 3 months

2  osteopenia No real side effects but the result has been a flop. I have been taking Fosomax from 2006-2009 and had a Dex scan this October that actually showed that I lost more bone density, how can that be? this does not seem right at all. Please write in if you have had the same kind of results after a long period of taking this drug. F 50

1  Osteoperosis SEVERE joint and muscle pain all over my body. I was just started on Fosamax last Wednesday. My bones became tight, stiff and I feel like the entire inside of my body is inflamed/sore. Pain is severe in the back, shoulders, neck. and hips. It has taken me 6 days to link these symptoms to Fosamax. I kept thinking it would get better! I am NOT taking my second dose tomorrow and will be reporting these side effects to my physician ASAP. There is no way I can function while taking this drug. F 50 1 weeks

1  Osteoporosis Severe itching of skin on face and scalp. Itching progressed to burning sensation that is worsened by sunlight. Some swelling of face and tongue. Visited urgent care yesterday (Sunday) and the physician told me this was definitely an allergic reaction to Fosamax. I am taking Medrol dose pak and Benedryl to lessen the allergic reaction, but I am in substantial pain. I took two weekly doses of 35 mg -- symptoms started about 5 days after the last dose. The urgent care doctor said his wife also had problems with Fosamax and has done well on calcium + vitamin D twice a day. Fosamax is going in the trash! F 50 2 weeks

1  osteoporosis Severe musculoskeletal pain. Abdominal pain. I have been trying to take Fosamax for the past four months. After two doses, the pain begins. I've stopped taking it twice, and the pain subsides within two weeks. Also began to notice bone abnormalities. This is a very bad drug. F 50 4 months

1  Osteopenia Extreme shooting pain in lower legs, extreme knee pain, bloating and weight gain, very dry hair and hair breakage I wish I had figured out how awful this drug is long before 8 months of taking it. Fosamax made me feel about 30 years older than I am. The pain in my legs was unbelievable. I could barely go up and down stairs. My hair looked fried and was breaking off near the roots. I was not having anything done to it at the salon, just regular haircuts, and my hair has never been dry. I stopped taking Fosamax about 4 weeks ago and feel so much better. Even my hair is getting better. I cringe thinking this stuff is going to stay in my body for 10 years. F 50 8 months

1  Ospeopenia I went from being a healthly 49 year old woman who exercised 3 or 4 times a week to a crippled who couldn't walk around the block. The worse side effects were severe muscle and joint pain, insomia, severe headaches, constant mouth sores, eye pain, fatigue, depression, weekness and shortness of breath. I had taken actonel for two years and hadn't had any problems with it but my insurance quit paying for it so my doctor prescribed fosamax (they would pay for it). I went to five doctors over one year period and not one of them ever mentioned that this drug could be my problem. I was even told I probably had MS!! It took me almost a year to figure out on my own that it was the drug fosamax that was KILLING me. I suggested this to my doctor and she said NO! I quit taking it anyway and started feeling better. After much pressure from my doctor I decided to try it again. I took two pills and was sick again! I wouldn't reccomend this drug to anyone! IT WAS KILLING ME! I have been off of it for 3 months now and am beginning to feel like myself again. I am up to walking 1 1/2 miles per day and have also started working out on an elliptical trainer to strengthen my muscles and bones. F 50 10 months

1  osteopenia muscle spasms in leg, severe pain in leg, severe swelling in ankle and foot I took one 70 mg. pill and I had to go to the emergency room. I could not get out of bed by myself. I took this pill on Wednesday and Saturday morning I was in the emergency room. I was having severe pain and spasms in my leg and swelling in ankle and foot. The doctor thought I had pulled a muscle and prescribed tramadol and flexeril. On Monday is when the swelling ocurred in my left ankle and foot. The spasms and pain was in my right leg. The middle of that week I went to my doctor and she said this was a severe reaction to the fosamax and not to ever take it anymore. It took 1 week for the swelling to go out of my ankle and about 6 weeks for the hurting to stop in my left foot. I was prescribed miacalcin and I have not had any side effects from this. F 50 1 days

1  Dx of slight osteopenia Severe chest and mid back pain, extreme fatigue, hip pain. Thought I was having a heart attack. Luckily I researched the side effects after one dose. Will never take this medicine again. Found a good website called womantowoman having googled "osteoporosis and Fosamax". Tells you some great naturals ways of keeping bones healthy and explains how these drugs (don't) work!! I would never recommend this drug to anyone. F 50 3 days

1  osteoporosis severe muscle, bone (even colloar bone!) and joint pain all over body. Could not get out of bed. Even in bed because of severe pain turning was excruciating. Had my doc give me norcotic pain killer. It has been a month since I took the last one but still walk like an old woman. Today US FDA said 'severe musculoskeletal pain with bisphosphonate osteopororsis drugs may be overlooked' according to briefing.com. I already report my trouble to FDA. F 50 2 weeks

1  osteopenia Within twelve hours of taking the 70mg. once weekly tablet I began to experience general aches and pains. Within twenty four hours I experienced severe bone, muscle and skin pain. I had a hard time sleeping and was tired. Not sure if it was Fosamax I waited one and a half months and took another 70mg. tablet this past Wednesday. It is definately the Fosamax. The pain is worse this time around.I am also experiencing pain for hours on my skin if pessure is applied on my body.. I will take my chances with fractures before I take another tablet of Fosamax.  1  Ostioperosis Severe muscle spasms in my back, legs, feet and hips, back and hip pain severe enough to have to get muscle relaxers, and pain killer as well as take time off from work. Pain was so severe I could not sit, stand, walk or bend without extreme pain. These symptoms occured within weeks of my first time taking 70mg./wk. I previously had no joint pains or issues with muscle spasms. Suspecting it might be the Fosamax, I discontinued it's use for several month and the symptoms disappeared. Then in my yearly physical with my primary care physician, I explained why I had stopped using Fosamax, and he said he didn't think my muscle spasms and hip and joint pains were related, and encouraged me to begin taking it again. The second time I began taking the medication it only took 3 weeks for all my symptoms to return. F 50 1 years

1  osteoprosis acute joint pain in shoulder initially, which has now moved to my wrist and fingers. I feel horrible! I took only one 70mg pill 5 days ago and have been in extreme pain for the past 3 days. I will not be continuing with this drug!! F 50 6 days

1  Osteopenia My GYN recommended it for osteopenia. A few days after the first once-per-week dosage I began having joint pains in my thumbs which shortly took over my whole hand, now my whole body. I feel like I have the flu all the time or full body arthritis. I had none of these symptoms before and have only been taking Fosamax for one month. I saw my PCP who did blood work to check for arthritis and he recommended that I stop taking the Fosamax after checking the side effects. It may work for some people, but it has made me feel miserable and I am not taking it any more. I feel worse than a 90-year-old woman and move about like one. Anyone taking it should be VERY cautious about any changes in pain and/or side effects they experience and report them to their physician. F 50 30 days

1  Osteopenia Constipation. Having always had achy joints/muscles, probably didn't relate this to the drug. Initially started drug about 3 yrs ago. Took for a few months and quit due to constipation issues. Next annual physical, doc says you really need to be on this, started again, but quit because same reason. Developed huskiness in my voice, cough at night when I'm on my back, etc. Dx with GERD. I've taken Prevacid 2x day for the past 18 months. Just had my second EGD because I'm scared I'll end up with esophageal ca. I'll get results next week. I convenced my GYN that I wanted to resolve my digestive issues before trying any other drug. These testimonials give me the ammunition to push my physicians for answers. What has to happen before we can be part of a class action lawsuit? F 50 8 months

1  low bone density I began to feel heartburn. I felt nauseous, and I felt like my esophagus was burning. I was on for a year and a half. I went off and the heartburn continued so I had an upper GI done and sure enough, I have Barrett's esophagus and the opening to my stomach won't close. I am really upset, I am only 50 years old. I wouldn't reccommend this drug to anyone. Please read the book THE MYTH OF OSTEOPOROSIS. F 50 450 days
