FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  Osteoporosis/hyperparathyroidism Mild flu like symptoms (tired, chills) I believe everyone diagnosed with osteopenia/osteoporosis should ask their dr to do calcium and parathyroid test on their blood. See the website www.parathyroid.com. Hyperparathyroidism (not thyroid) can cause osteoporosis, but is somewhat reversible after a simple operation to remove the dysfunctional parathyroid gland. parathyroid.com website explains it clearly and how it causes osteoporosis in some people.  2  osteoporosis I'm still taking Fosamax but am considering quitting. I feel it may be linked to my throat irritation and subsequent bacterial infection of the sinuses and eyes although it has helped improve my overall bone mass. F 72 5 years

1  Osteopenia About three months ago, it was as if someone filled a bucket with illogical symptoms and dumped them on me all at once--all those mentioned on this site. I started going to doctors to see what had caused it, but since none of the symptoms are visible, I could tell that several of the doctors thought I was a hypochoncriac. The ENT did a CAT scan of my sinus and said he saw nothing to cause flu-like symptoms; the orthopedic surgeon's Xray showed no reason for joint pain, the eye doctor saw nothing amiss, etc. Two doctors had prescribed Fosamax and neither had warned me about side effects, plus--I feel so stupid now--I hadn't thought to research it on my own. Then I found this site and blessed the people who started it and the patients who have shared their experiences. The past year I had two hip replacements, so I had assumed that the thigh and calf pain was associated with surgery. Then when I read these comments, I realized I'd been experiencing side effects of Fosamax for sever Wonderful news! Yesterday I turned my head both left and right without pain, climbed two flights of stairs without calf pain, and--best of all--this morning I tasted my coffee!! I won't take Fosamax or Evista again and will take my chances with bone loss. F 72 5 years

1  'possible' osteopenia I started getting bone deposits in my face within a year after starting the drug. I was assured they had nothing to do with Fosamax so I continued. I now have bone loss in my jaw as well! I am convinced the eruptions on my face are from Fosamax. I've also experienced pain in my shoulder and right arm that noone has been able to diagnose. And, I was refused dental implants because of the bone loss caused by the Fosamax. I would not recomment it to anyone as there are too many unknowns. The osteoma cutis on my face has gotten worse and there is no known way of getting rid of it. I've stopped taking the drug, but the damage has been done. I've also been hospitalized for an apparent heart attack. It was found I didn't have any heart problem, and there too no diagnosis was found. F 72 9 years

1  Osteoporosis Stiffness, joint pain especially painful in hips and when walking, waking up at night by severe pain in joints and bones, acid reflux symptoms, difficulty getting up and moving after sitting. My doctor insisted I keep taking it. I went off it on my own after hearing it loses effectiveness after 5 years. I almost immediately experienced total relief from all the sypmtoms. I can move freely without pain and stiffness. I never knew all my pain was caused by this drug. I also have slept without being awakened with pain. F 72 5 years

1  Osteoporsis Extreme diarrhea, bone pain, fatigue, depression I had taken Boniva for a year and the doctor said there was no improvement on my bone scan so he prescribed Fosamax. I couldn't go out until late afternoon because the diarrhea let up about then. After six weeks it was so bad I didn't make it to the bathroom. At that point I stopped taking Fosamax. All the side effects I had blamed on ageing disappeared. I feel much younger. I think the year of Boniva contributed to the above symptoms and they became worse on Fosamax. I checked out a website called HealthBoards.com and was amazed so many women had so many side effects from Fosamax and other osteoprosis meds. Some of them recommended a book, "The Myth of Osteoporosis" by Gillian Sanson. It explained everything and aleviated my fears. I have no financial interest in the book, I do not profit in any way. One more thing, the unnecessary fear of osteoporosis has caused me much damage since HRT prescribed for it about 8 years ago caused a blood clot (Deep Vein Thrombosis) i F 72 6 weeks

1  Osteopinina I experienced terrible abdominal pain and debilitating back pain after my 5th pill. Previous to that I had the feeling my leg would give out...knee the same...grinding in my neck. After stopping the alendonate I experienced a sprain in my hand . Now I have swollen ankles..painful Achilles. Walking like a stick figure. Before I took this I felt good. Walk a mile in 20 minutes. I hope I will be able to resume my normal life. I don't know why a doctor would prescribe it and why it has not been removed from the market. F 72 5 weeks

1  For procautionary measures leg cramps, jaw pain, headaches, belching, chronic fatigue, sinus infection, nausea, abdominal pain, dizziness I had sever pain in my lower back and right hip so went to the chirapractor to have it x-rayed. It showed a calcium buildup on the pulvic bone. Had x-rays about four years ago and it was not there then. The headaches came within 2to3 hours after taking Fosamax and would last severals days. This did not seem normal to me to did some research on the web. I was encouraged by family members to quit. The FDA recently notified medical professionals that these "bone builders" can cause excruciating pain. I feel much better since "cold turkey'n it. It needs to be removed from the market.  1  Osteoporosis After taking this drug for 3 years, I began having hip, knee and leg pain. I stopped taking fosamax for 4 weeks and all pain disappeared. My PCP encouraged me to try again. After 2 doses, I had the worst pain all over my body I've ever had in my life. After 3 months the pain is subsiding (I now am taking an antinfiammatory drug prescribed by an orthopedic dr ). I will never take this drug again and tell everyone I know to stay away from it. 72 3 years

5  I have osteoporisus I have experienced no side effects. I take it on Sunday morning before I start getting ready for church and by the time we get to buy coffee it has been at least an hour. One time I drank coffee within 30 minutes and had a little indigestion. I have been taking fosamax for over 5 years and I am real particular that I do not drink coffee for at least an hour, maybe a little more. It has taken my hip pain away and I have no other pain. I am very active and have no other medical problems, so I feel very fortunate. I think if you are very careful to take it exactly like it says with plenty of water and not eat or drink or lay back down for 30 minutes, you will do fine taking it. I recommend it for all these reasons above. If they change, then I will stop taking it. F 71 5 days

3  my doctor advised me to take it in I believed that this medication helped me because the bone density tests did not show an increase in Osteoporosis. But since last winter I have daily toothaches after having been outside for a walk or after crossing children at chool! I probably have a gum problem, resession? I have a lot of trouble getting off the floor and off the couch; my knees are stiff and they hurt often. Sometimes my wrists also hurt and my fingers. I assumed I had arthritis - but now I am not sure! I have stopped taking the drug this week! I will contact my doctor to find out whether there is something save on the market or maybe I will just go with calcium, milk, cheese, vegetables, and fruit. Natural remedies are always the better way! I used to pay $18 per tablet - and now that I see all these negative reports, I am very angry. I hope I did not do a lot of damage to my body. Do you know how long it takes to detox from it? I will not take Fosamax anymore. One of my friends just e-mailed me from Iowa and tol I will no longer take it! I hope this gets out-of my system fast. thanks for letting me coment on Fosamax. F 71 6 years

3  osteoporosis None that I am aware of. I followed the directions religiously always waiting 60 or more minutes before drinking coffee or eating and always standing or sitting up. Really my answer to my satisfaction with Fosamax should be: don't know. Have had several bone scans over the years, with good readings for my age, alledgedly because of the 70 mgs weekly Fosamax. After the last one 2 & 1/2 years ago my hip and spine osteoarthritis had become so bad the technologists couldn't get a good reading. They did my forearm but that was inconclusive. Have within the last year had both hips replaced and my life is changed marvelously. I can now walk totally painfree and get some walking, mowing and other gardening in often. Have decided to STOP taking Fosamax because I read that after 10 years, it might not be helping me any longer, and in fact is perhaps making my bones brittle. F 71 10 years
