FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

2  Osteoporosis Serve stomach cramps when first started lasted about 4 weeks. I had broken my foot and after the cast was off for 8 weeks noticed that my toes hurst so bad I could not move them at times. Also haveing problems getting up from sitting, I need to stand still for a minute. The bottom of my feet hurt so bad I can't walk right away. Having trouble bending down, experienceing sever pain. I had none of these symptoms before taking this medicine. Called my Dr. and he said he did not believe that this was caused from the medicine. I have only been off of Fosamax for 4 weeks and I have not seen much of an improvement. F 51 5 months

2  Osteoporosis I did stop taking Foxamax and my fatigue has abated considerably. I'm back to feeling the same as I did before I started. It didn't take too long - maybe a week or so, to feel back to normal. I don't think I'll be taking Foxamax, that's for sure! F 51 0 days

2  osteopenia Had only taken for two weeks (once a week tab) and had chronic sore throat. Stomach pain was constant and also joint pain that I had never had before. ???Is it worth it. Do the side effects subside after taking for a while, because I don't know if I want to continue. F 51

2  osteoporosis After taking Fosamas for close to 10 years, I am now wondering if the development of fibromyalgia and a pain in my hip that just won't go away were caused from this drug. The drug kept my osteoporosis in check but did not cure me. I discontinued use when I heard about the jaw bone issue and after taking care of the root problem which was my parathyroid. I began taking it for osteoporosis around the age of 40. Several years ago I had a parathyroidectomy - the root cause of the osteoporosis was parathyroid hyperplasia. Please check out www.parathyroid.com - it may be your problem as well. F 51 10 years

2  osteopenia Extreme pain in my rib cage, pelvic joint pain, and now in my neck at the base of my skull I have a crackling noise and tinnuitis starting. After reading everything here I have stopped after 4 doses and hope that it wasn't enough to leave lasting affects. I plan to exercise and treat naturally -- I would encourage all of you to seek out natural therapy, I have found now (wish I had earlier) that there is much you can do. Good luck to all. F 51 4 weeks

2  Osteoporosis I took my first once-a-week dosage on a Friday morning. I started feeling a little achy and tired at dinner. Within a couple of hours, I was huddled on the couch with severe aches and chills. On-call doctor said I could take 400mg of ibuprofen. By the next morning I felt fine but my PCP has since advised I not take the 2nd dose and is referring me to an endocrinologist. F 51 1 days

1  Osteopenia Foot pain; back pain; knee pain; elbow pain; stiff, painful, swollen fingers during the night and all morning; nausea; reflux; severe dental and jaw pain after spending time out in the cold. Merck has a website, http://www.fosamax-information.com/html/sideeffects.html, on which they tell you all the horrifying side-effects. I already knew about the joint and muscle pain from looking up Fosamax before I took it. What I didn't know was that the pain, stiffness, and swelling wouldn't stop when I stopped taking the drug. That very important fact is LEFT OUT of Merck's warnings. I reported my side effects to the FDA, and I hope you will, too, at https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/medwatch/I am going to refuse to ever take Fosamax again. F 51 3 weeks

1  osteoporosis in hip After the first once a week pill, I had severe joint pain, with muscles aches all over my body. I did not take the next pill until a month later as I had a 3 week trip to Europe planned and did not want to chance feeling terrible. I took the second pill when I got back and the side effects were immediate, although different and much worse! The first day I was extremely tired, felt like I needed to sleep all day long. Later in the day I had severe heartburn and I also noticed a pain in the roof of my mouth. The next day, the pain in the roof of my mouth was worse and I could feel something, like a lump. It is now 6 days since I took the pill and the sore is much larger and the pain is excruciating. It hurts terribly to swallow and I can't eat and can barely talk. I went to my doctor yesterday and she said it was definitely a side effect of Fosamax and to quit taking it. Duh! Then she sent me on my way for two weeks!! I'm quitting Fosamax and my doctor! Do not take this drug. Even if you do not have any noticable side effects, it is probably doing something bad to you. It is not worth it. There is probably a natural alternative that works just as well. F 51 2 days

1  osteopenia felt like I was hit by a Mack truck! horrible rib, shoulder and back pain. Sweated all night, blurred vision, nausea, couldn't stay awake. Too many horrible symptoms to list. I have only taken this once and took me a little while to associate the symptoms back to fosamax. So glad I did a little research to find this site, now I know I'm not crazy. I was trying to work up nerve to take 2nd dose, but now I'm not so sure I will. Anybody have good alternative natural medicine? F 51 1 days

1  osteoporosis after about 6 months I experienced increasing memory loss and I am only 51. The memory issues increased until I stopped taking fosamax and with 4 weeks my memory was clear and crisp. There are ways to get strong bones without sacrificing your brain. This side effect was one that my Mother and several other people I know have had on Fosamax. If your retired and don't work - who would tell you that your memory is bad. Also why would you assume bad memory is due to age - that is not always the case. F 51 37 months

1  Osteopenia Unbearable body pain...back, sides, hips. Felt sporadic fever, nauseous. Will never take it again. Not worth the pain. I've had back surgery and this felt very similar to right after surgery...but worse. I'm a teacher and thankful that it is the summer, otherwise would have had to take the week off as I have not been able to function. Woke up crying in the middle of the night and husband hand to rub my back to get me back to sleep. F 51 1 days
