FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  bone density tests have gone down I started to take fosamax about 1 1/2 yrs ago. After taking it for seveal months, I had such soreness in my rib cage. I quit taking it for about 3 months, and the soreness pretty much went away. My doctor urged me to start taking in again, and now I seem to have a "tightness" on both sides of my head...not really a headache, but this tightness all the time. I also feel "at loose ends", and kind of nervous. Could these be some of the side effects? F 62 1.5 years

1  osteoporosis After a year on fosamax, I was diagnosed with acid reflux. It was so chronic and severe, and continues today, 13 years later. The worst part is that this acid reflux has exacerbated my lifelong asthma, turning it into a truly life-threatening condition. I also am worried about possibly having Barret's syndrome from it, which can lead to cancer... This medicine has so compromised my health and well-being. It's frightening that medicines can have adverse reactions that are irrereversible. F 62 1 years

1  Osteopenia I have not taken Fosamax yet but doctor wanted me to pick up my prescription for it because my bone density test showed "adnormalities" so based on that he felt I have Osteopenia but I don't buy that and would rather have more tests done. After reading so many comments on Foxamax, I have decided not to take it but increase my calcium to 1,800 a day and more weight bearing exercise. My blood test a month ago showed that I was very low on Vitamin D and was given a prescription to take 50,000 units of Vitamin D a week for a total of 200,000 units a month so I will continue to take higher Vitamin D on my own because of the benefits for my bone. You might ask your doctor about that to see if it would help you. Thank you all for your honest comments!!! F 62 0 days

1  osteopenia Severe back, hip, and shoulder pain. I took the once a week tablet at 7 AM. By 7 PM I started having back pain. By three hours later I could not sit, stand, or walk without support. The pain was so severe my husband had to support me to walk, raise and lower me to sit (even on the toilet). I contacted my MD. He suggested ibuprophen. I alternated that with percoset. I am on my third day of this nightmare and will never take fosamax again. I am not a sissy, but after four major surgeries and also being thrown from a car after being hit by a train, I have never experienced pain like this. F 62 1 days

1  Osteoporosis As a healthy and fairly strong 61 year old woman, I began taking Fosomax because a bone scan showed osteoporosis. For a month or so, things seemed OK. In the second month I realized I was becoming weak. My lack of strength was confirmed when I went camping with my husband and tried to walk along the beach with him. I was exhausted, out of breath easily, and it was then it first occurred to me how weak and achey I was since taking this drug. In the third month things got worse fast. My legs began causing an inordinate amount of pain. The morning I found myself walking in teeny tiny steps to the bathroom, I quit taking this drug; I realized it was poisoning me. For one year after taking Fosomax, I experienced a lot of leg pain. It did not get better at all. I woke up at night in terrible pain, it felt like muscle and bone pain. Sitting became difficult as my legs would suddenly begin a dull, horrible ache. I was really in a lot of pain for an entire year. I could not sleep on my side, because it would hurt my hips too much. I had to move around in bed; I couldn't stay in one position because of the pain that would seem to radiate from bones pressing together. It was awful. I missed lying on my side; it was impossible to do it. In the second year after quitting Fosomax, I still experience leg, hip, arm pain. I experience pain throughout my whole body, though not as drastic as that first year after quitting Fosomax. I don't know if I'll ever heal from this but I sure hope so. F 62 3 months

1  osteoporosis Within 3 hours, started getting rash on neck, pain in joints, shoulders, back of legs etc; had the worse night sweats ever; migraine headaches would not go away even with usual meds; during one severe night sweat episode, felt horrible crushing chest and arm pain, felt like the described symptoms of a heart attack, almost went to the ER but pain on right side; extreme fatigue, probably from not being able to sleep and from all the excess joint pain. Took me a week after just one pill to get rid of most of the symptoms, but night sweats continued for 3 months and gradually became less frequent. The symptoms started so soon after taking it the first time, I knew it was the Fosamax. I refuse to take it and other drugs in its family - I told my doctor I thought I was dying. He still is pressuring me to take something - now it's Evista. I don't think so. F 62 1 days

1  alendronic Acid generic of Fosomax The worst drug ever experienced.I was so ill and gradually got worse up to the 6th week as if it was topping up it kicks in after about 24 hrs, bad bone pain, pain in hands and feet and ribs, muscle weakness by the sixth week could not get up from squatting position, a real tiredness just layed on the bed most of the time.Dry hair dry skin and felt and looked 90 as others have said.thats only short term side effects....what does it do long term? taken weeks to get out of my system and still not myself.I will take my chances with vits, calcium and excercise. I have read as much as I can about this drug and most people say that have stayed on it that they have still lost density!!!! With the long term side effects why compromise the rest of your body...should be banned. All it does it turn old bone brittle and gives you no quality of life while on it.iread all these on here and they could have been me speaking as some of the side effects I didnt put down to that, like my eyes etc......poison!!!  1  osteoporis I was prescribed taking a pill each morning - with full glass of water and not eating for 1 hour. within a week I started getting severe esphogas (sp) burning pain. When I called my Dr. He said to stop immediately. When I had another bone density test I asked the technician if other people complained of burning down their esphogas - he said many. I would never take it again and also read that the bone density advantage even after several years was not statistically significant. I think this is a dangerous drug and also very expensive - I think we'll see this taken off the market too or should but if you don't die from it probably won't be withdrawn unless lots more negative publicity.  1  Osteoporosis 9 days ago I took my first and last Fosamax. I had so much pain everywhere in my body that was unlike pain I'd never felt before. I also continue to have stabbing head pain around my temples along with jawbone pain and aching teeth. I feel like I have been poisoned! When will this pain go away? Horrible drug. F 62 1 days

1  osteopenia Jaw pain, dry mouth, hip and knee pain I started this in November 2011 and took my last pill on July 13,2012. After 7 months I began getting pain in my right jaw, then both sides of jaw. I stopped medicine after a few more weeks and within a week I began having a dry mouth. I have never had this and it is very distressing as I have to keep sipping water to chew my food. The jaw pain is 95% gone now and the mouth is slightly improved after a month off the pills. I now wonder if my recent right hip pain is from this medicine too. I hope so and that it will fade. I know the knees will continue to hurt but maybe that will lessen. F 62 8 months

1  Osteoporosis I can't remember the daily dosage. Just to report that I sustained a stress fracture in my left femur and my orthopedic dr. said it probably was due to taking Fosamax for two years. Please beware of the risks. When they say a side effect can be fractures, they are not kidding. My RA dr. switched me to another drug (Forteo) for two years, which seemed to help heal the femur fracture. Haven't had fractures since getting off Fosamax. F 62 2 years
