FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Dr prescribed fosamax I Was prescribed Fosamax by my Dr because my bone density test showed the start of bone thinning. I took ONE pill and followed the directions completely. Well I didn't get acid reflux, but I have never been so miserable accept when I had kidney stones. I got acid diarrea so bad that I actually bled from my bowels. My joints were aching terribly and I became violently sick to my stomach. I knew it had to be the fosamax. It hit me that my symptoms were exactly like that of someone who had food poison or had injested some toxic chemical. I'll never take another pill without checking it out on the net again. I'm convinced that FOSAMAX will probably kill more people than it will help, and that we will certainly hear a lot about the long term effects of this drug in the near future. I'm going to take my four left-over pills and use them to clean out my sink drains. F 64 1 days

1  Osteoporosis Muscle aches in forearms; muscle aches and terrible burning of both feet that got progressively worse as weeks went on. Took for 3 1/2 months in combination with Glucosamine and Chonoitdrin for joint pain in feet (bunion) and was progressively getting weaker, unable to walk. Dr. told me to take Advil 4 or 5 times a day; it soon did no good. I was always active walker, exercising by walking 2 or 3 miles 4 times a week, doing cardio and weights also. Now have gained weight and experienced flushing and blurry vision, all this since starting this horrible drug. Had all symptomsof periferal neuropathy. Just stopped drug 1 week ago and starting to feel better already. F 64 14 weeks

1  treat osteoporosis After reading the comments of others on your site, I now believe that many of my sypmtoms may be caused by Fosamax. Pain in joints, muscles, etc. Tired with chronic fatigue and severe anxiety. I have stopped taking it as my symptoms increased every time I took the pill. I think it is time to stop the Fosamax. I would rather have some quality of life, rather than quantity and nonfunctional. Does anyone know how long it might take for the sypmtoms to stop? People might try Zyflamend which is an herbal antiinflammatory or a tricyclic antidepressant medication like Sinequan for fibromyalgia. My e-mail is below if anyone has any input for help. We would all appreciate it. F 64 7 days

1  Bone loss Began having numerous heart palpitation, seeing a cardiologist now. It occurred to me they started about same time I started the bone meds. I don't know how long this will last, will it be damaged for life and will I have these forever. Has anyone gotten rid of palpitations and if so how? I stopped taking Fosomax couple weeks ago.  1  early osteoporosis After one dose had slight nausea. Muscle and bone pain. Felt like cracked ribs. Headache. Eye pain. Flu-like symptoms. Chills. Had trouble lying on my right side in bed. Felt like someone beat me up. Exhausted. I am not planning on taking it anymore after reading the comments of the other patients that had similar symptoms, especially about the jaw disintegration. I only took one dose. F 64 1 days

1  osteopenia - spine t-score -2.4 I took my first (and last) fosamax-70 pill this morning, and after two hours began experiencing strong flu-like symptoms: achyness and swelling around the eyes and throat and nose, headache, nosebleed, sore throat, and general weakness and lack of energy. I am so glad I found this website to learn about others' reactions to this drug. I hope my reactions pass. I have generally been a healthy person, though my mother had osteoporosis, and I wanted to try Fosamax in order to do everything possible to try to prevent osteoporosis. But after seeing the side effects and reading about other possible negative long-term effects (e.g. jaw), I have decided I'll just rely on good nutrition, supplements, and a lot more exercise to try to keep my bones dense but also flexible. I don't think the side effects of this medicine are worth it in my case. I've also learned through reading that bone density is not the same as fracture risk; other factors enter into fracture risk.  1  Osteporsis I had taken Fosamax for about 4 years with no apparent side effects. I started taking the generic about three months ago and after a month have had lower back, Rt hip and leg pain, especially at night. I could not figure out why it seemed to get better and then would worsen again. Now I realize that the pain increased after taking my weekly dose. I found this web site and stopped taking the drug. My pain is lessening and I can sleep without all the Tylenol and Ibuprophen. I have started a daily walking program in addition to calcium. No more Fosamax for me! F 64 4.5 years

1  Osteoporosis. I had what are called side effects: all over, traveling extreme bone pain that went away at 4 weeks. Since the first 5 minutes after taking the first pill, my severe reaction started. My sinuses were affected and over three weeks swelled, caused major swelling on scalp near sinuses. I had to sleep if I didn’t need to be up for work. I was losing my ability to function. Couldn’t get dressed standing up, legs would get weak from walking. Afraid to drive. Took super strength Tylenol all day everyday just to be able to be up and work. Doctor felt these were temporary side affects that would go away. Week 6 my face and eyes swelled eyeballs swelled cheeks swelled. Stopped then. Before I took the drug while I was actually 64 I always felt 54. From day 1 of fosamax I felt 85 or 95. F 64 45 days

5  osteoporosis Great improvement!! I can't say enough good about Fosamax. I had serious osteoporosis about 10 years ago when I started taking it (due to very early hysterectomy and medications)and the bone loss has slowly but completely been replaced. I love the stuff!! F 63 10 years

4  Osteopenia A little extra gassiness Of course the published side effects worried me, but Mayo Clinic reports that osteonecrosis is quite rare, and usually occurs in cancer patients and people who have had dental procedures like extractions. My dexascan after 2 years showed considerable improvement. I also exercise, lift weights, eat greens and yogurt F 63 3 years

4  dr.recommendation I had been very satisfied with fosamex and had no side effects until this past Monday, when I was hospitalized with Atrial Fibrillation This past Monday I was hospitalized with Atrial Fibrillation which took 24 hours to flip back to normal. My cardiac Dr. told me in no uncertain terms that this is one of the side effects of Fosamex and I needed to stop immediately. If you have any kind of cardiac problems, stay away from Fosamex. The cure is worse than the problem. F 63 10 years

4  osteoporosis Occasional acid stomach and mildstomach pain, possible weakness or stiffness in legs, but not sure this is from Fosamax. My actual bone mass increased 12% in spine and 6% in hips. I went from -3.1 T score in my spine to -2.3 and -2.1 in hips to -1.7. I will continue to take it because it is helping. F 63 2 years

3  osteoperosis I have been on Fosamax for 6+ years. Two years ago I started to have sporadic problems with the feeling that food was stuck in my throat and would not go down. It has gotten progressively worse - and now I seem to have constant problams with eating and swallowing. I thought it was just acid reflux and age(63), but now after reading the comments on this website I am considering going off Fosamax totally and waiting to see if I improve. I don't want to go to my Dr. yet - she will just put me on a medication for GERD and disagree that the Fosamax is a problem. Thanks to everyone for their detailed input. F 63 6 years
