FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  Osteopenia Left hip pain, left shoulder pain, shooting jaw pain, popping joints I am posting this note because I have had some success remedying the long term joint pain problems many of you discussed. After taking Fosamax for 7 years with no problems, I took a single generic pill in October, 2011. In a few hours I had nearly all the side effects listed in the other postings, hip pain, shoulder pain, jaw pain, popping joints, soreness on balls of feet. I had been completely pain free before this. I stopped the Fosamax immediately and most of the symptoms subsided over a couple of months. However, the posterior hip continued to hurt with every step, and the shoulder pain continued. For ten months there was no improvement. Besides Fosamax, I had also been taking Lipitor for five years. Since Lipitor is known to cause muscle/joint pain, and since Lipitor affects the same cellular metabolic mevalonate pathway as does Fosamax, I thought I would try discontinuing Lipitor for a while. While not completely gone, the hip and the shoulder improved significantly within weeks. Do approach this cautiously, since you must be on Lipitor for some cardiovascular reason, and your cardiovascular benefits of Lipitor must be weighed in. F 65 7 years

2  osteoporosis I had taken two Boniva tablets prior to taking Fosamax. They really bothered me with severe pain like heart attack. Fosamax made my jaw feel like I couldn't close it and it was king of hanging loose. I've had a constant sore throat since taking it three months ago. I constantly have to clear my throat and it feels like something is pressing against my Adam's apple area. I had ultrasound scan for thyroid problem but there is no indication of that. Throat is still sore and I worry about esophogeal problems and I will go for endoscopy. I seem to be constantly clearing my throat. In my opinion it may be being prescribed to people with osteopenia and perhaps should not because that is an early sign that comes with most people who are aging. I have osteoporosis which has progressed as side effect from chemotherapy for breast cancer. I'm really not sure what to do next. F 65 1 days

2  Osteopenia I have thigh pain. I have difficulty going up stairs or putting any weight on my legs. I am so stiff when getting up from sitting or lying down that I walk like an old lady until I take a few steps. It's getting so bad I can't walk for long, or take long car rides without discomfort. After talking with friends I realized this pain coincided with my taking this drug. I'd rather take my chances with the bone density problem. F 65 2 years

2   Wondered why I developed TMJ, had no idea, dentist and doctor did not even suggest Fossamax was a culprit. After reading all these comments, I am going to cease this treatment and look for other options. I can hardly chew, can't open up my mouth, sometimes can't bring teeth together, have to puree my food. What do you think? Too many others with similar problems, might work for a few, not worth the risk, too many negatives. M 65 6 months

2  Osteoporosis Some joint pain in hip and shoulder. Pain in eye balls. Some chest discomfort. Elevated platelet count. 5 TIA's( 2 partial vision loss, 2 right hand numbness, one complete right eye vision loss, all transient) Discontinued Fosamax about 4 months ago. Take baby aspirin and plavix. Pain all gone except for some pressure in chest. No family history of heart disease. Holter monitor and nuclear stress test are normal. Most likely I had blood clots due to elevated platelet count(used to be 200K, now 650K). No new systems after on these two medication. F 65 2 years

2  Osteopenia I have taken Fosamax for two years beginning at the age of 63. I have left hip/back pain which began approx. 6 months ago, and also a "lump" in my throat when swallowing. I just found this WEB site, and after reading all of the above comments, will no longer take this drug. My physician gave me 5 months worth of "free" samples to "get me started." My bone scan after two years of using Fosmax did show slight improvement. Two months ago I began taking a very small dose of HRT through a local compounding pharmacy that works with my physician. I intend to eat foods rich in calcium, and to continue walking 10,000 steps per day. F 65 2 years

1  osteoporosis Double vision that last 1 year.. I took fosamax a few years ago but stopped it abruptly after one morning dose I suddenly had double vision. This plagued me for a year - nightmare. Of course the Dr. said it was not Fosamax. Has anyone ever had this side effect? Then a few months ago I started Actonel, no double vison but eye strain, bone aches, headache and sore throat continually. Many symptoms described on this site are similar to Actonel. Therefore for me - nothing further ever! These are drugs that are not safe. I exercise, take calcium, vit D, and fish oil. F 65 1 years

1  osteopenia Severe pain in ribs and back lasting a day or so along with severe headache, followed by a night of diarrhea and shivering. Next day woke with swelling and pain in hands. Decided to stop using drug after one try. It's not worth it to lose quality of life. Called doctor to report adverse reaction and was told to stop taking Fosamax and switch to Actonel. Still thinking about that, as Actonel has side effects as well. F 65 1 days

1  Osteoporis It gave me SEVERE back pain. My hair started falling out and since I already have TMJ it caused that to flare up. It also caused me to have gas so bad that I could not go out in public. I will never take this or any other medicine for osteo again. You would not believe the medical bills I have incurred as a result of the damage by Fosamax F 65 6 months

1  osteoporosis After one dose I couldn't get out of bed due to very severe pain throughout my back, waist to neck. After managing to maneuver to get upright, I spent the next four days in very severe pain every time I moved any muscle in my back. OTC pain meds had no effect for this. F 65 1 days

1  Osteoporosis I moved and my new doctor started me on Fosamax last October. i have had horrible pain in my middle back. I thought it was my pancreous.  1  Osteopenia and broken leg I felt like a FEEBLE 95 year old (I was 63), my balance was off, I was shaky, I developed a head tremor and generally did not feel like myself. I had a lumpiness where my sternum meets my clavicle. My doctor sent me to an endicrinologist, who did a scan of my thyroid, but it was okay. Two years later, I still have the lumpiness and the head tremor, but I don't feel 95 anymore. I stopped taking Fosamax after a few months. I became very afraid of my new symptoms. I looked online to see if anyone else felt the same way, and that's when I found this website. Today I read that taking Fosamax is possibly linked to esophageal cancer! I would never take this drug again, or anything like it, and I hope everyone will read all the warnings on this website before making up their minds to take or continue taking it. I think it is a very dangerous drug! F 65 5 months

1  Osteopenia Back and neck pain, acid reflux disease, diverticulosis, bloating, heart arythmia and many, many more. I was quite healthy before taking Fosomax. I took it in 1996 for about 6 months. Since then I have developed a ton of maladys. Too many to mention. Mostly all of my organs are affected. Liver, heart, intestines. Have chronic inflammatory disease. I suggest also that people have their ferritin levels checked. Mine shot up to 530. The norm is under 148. Please people, stop taking this poison. F 65 6 months

1  osteoporous abdominal pain/discompfort, constipation, bloating, difficulty lifting one arm due to muscle weakness, general body fatigue/weakness of a lesser degree than above, headache, upper central incisor with veneer cracking up and pieces falling out, other teeth aching mildly, one eyelid twitching, occasional vertigo. I have only had two doses of 70mg once weekly fosamax. My third dose would be due in three days, but I don't plan to take any more. Although my symptoms are mild compared to a great many of the others writing here, I have only taken two doses and was surprised to have so many odd symptoms. I am so glad that I decided to research this drug before taking anymore. I saw my dentist yesterday for the incisor that is breaking up and he said he is reluctant to treat me because of the potential for osteonecrosis of the jaw. I was shocked. I only had two doses. I decided to read the complete lengthy information sheet that came with my medicine - sounds like something I should have done first. But the print is so small that even with perfectly normal vision after cataract surgery this past summer, I still needed a magnifying glass to get thru it, with great and difficult concentration. I wonder if it is designed deliberately hoping that most of us could not possibly read it. I hope all F 65 2 weeks

1  osteoporosis After taking first weekly pill - lightheaded. A few days later -attack of vertigo. After taking a second pill, bouts of vertigo were almost ongoing throughout the day. Eventually went to Emergency Dept. Over the following year, the frequency of attacks lessened but only with new medication to control the attacks have I been able to have some semblance of normal life. I am still hypersensitive to temperature change and sound (making it difficult in busy or noisy environments such as shops and restaurants. This drug seems to have triggered something that has permanenly affected my life. F 65 2 weeks
