FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  osteoporosis I took my first dose yesterday morning at about 7 AM. Morning was okay but by about 4 PM I had diarrhea. By evening I had to vomit. I vomited again two more times during the night. I had a headache and vertigo. Just very uncomfortable all night. I was not able to eat breakfast today but did manage to eat lunch. And now I'm having nausea and stomach pain again. I plan to stop this drug. Very surprising because my digestion is usually very good - no heartburn or acid reflux at all. And I can't remember any bad reactions to other drugs. I have no idea why I reacted so badly to this drug. F 62 1 days

1  Osteoporosis Took as directed as I have had acid reflux for years. Drank plenty of water . The Dr also prescribed this without any discussion about Calcium and Vit D supplementation and or possible side effects . Took my first weekly dose with much trepidation. By the afternoon I felt slightly sluggish and had some dizziness. By evening I had a slight rash on arms and face and felt like I was coming down with the flu as I was achy. The following morning woke up stiff all over and didn't even feel like going for a walk at all. Sore especially in my arms and fingers. Generally feel sore all over even my heels and finger joints. I will not take this a second time! Starting to do heavy research on other ways to help with my condition other than these horrible medications! F 62 1 days

5  bone loss None I'm very good at following the directions for Fosamax. I drink at least 2 1/2 cups of water with it and wait a good 30 minutes before doing anything or taking anything else. I am surprised though that the doctor hasn't recommended another bone density test since I started taking it to see if it is working. F 61 4 days

3  broke a femur by falling tested ok I went down your list and found one that matched my problem. I have been on 35 mgs fosamax for just over a year and have since developed a boney growth on my wrist (ganglia or bone spur). Checked with my doctor and she put me on meds for arthritis. I soon rejected the meds due to intestinal problems. That's ok now with an occasional motrin for pain, but the boney growth is ugly and painful. I think it is time to back away from fosamax for a few months and see what happens. I think this is a mixture of good and bad, and I am concerned about bone loss. However,I would like to know more about it's retention abilities after you stop taking it. F 61 1 years

2  Osteoporosis Took weekly Fosamax for 3 years. During that time my T scores went down but my Endo said to keep taking it. Over the last 2 years I have experienced extreme neck and shoulder pain. In the morning it was so bad I'd almost be in tears. Then I researched the side effects and neck and shoulder pain was one of them. I discontinued the drug and 6 weeks later the pain is GONE. Since it wasn't helping anyway and making me miserable I have stopped the drug for good. I work in the medical field and most drugs have side effects with some worse than the condition they are supposed to help. I have never had a FX and have always had strong bones. I am now doing weight training, taking calcium, magnesium and vitamin D. M 61 3 days

2  osteopenia Haven't experienced side-effects as described by other consumers - however, am wondering about the efficacy of this medication (as well as Actonel which I am also reviewing). When my bone scan revealed osteopenia five years ago, my gynecologist placed me on weekly Actonel. The bone scan two years later still found osteopenia so my gynecologist had me continue on the Actonel, although she put me on the monthly pill which was a lot more convenient. Then in January 2010, the mail order pharmacy which I am required to use for maintenance medications announced that the only "approved" osteoporosis medication was the generic Fosamax (i.e., if I elected to continue the Actonel, a 3 month supply would cost 6 times what I would be charged for the generic Fosamax!). The gynecologist felt the generic Fosamax was equally as effective as the Actonel so I was switched over but again on a weekly dosage. However, having gotten accustomed to taking it only once a month, I keep forgetting to take it every week. But now hearing that the Fosamax, while hardening your bones also makes them brittle, that may be a good thing. So I will see if my next bone scan shows any improvement. F 61 7 months

2  severe osteoporosis Extreme feet, ankle and leg swelling. (I have always had a problem with fluid retention but lately, while on Fosamax, my diuretics do not seem to work as well) I don't know if it is the Fosamax but severe swelling started the same time I started on Fosamx. The swelling has affected my breathing. Has anyone else experienced extreme fluid retention? I've only been on Fosamax a short time so I don't know for sure if it is what is causing my most recent health problem. I will stop taking it immediately and see if there is improvement. F 61 2 weeks

2  bone density problems After taking it for 3 months my fingers, middle finger on each hand started hurting. I stopped for 2 weeks and it went away. I had never had any pain in my hands or other joints other than my hip when I drive. Now after taking it for 3 more months the joints in my thumbs, all of them are hurting. I have again stopped for a week and they are getting better. I don't know if the fosamax has helped with the bone density problem; however, if I cannot find studies that address the problem, I will take my chances with my bones as I had no pain before.I am currently on no other medication-- and according to the study that recently came out they do not know if the drug actually prevents fractures---why would it be prescribed if that is true?  1  Osteoporosis I've been on and off Fosamax (and Actonel, a similar drug) a few times over a period of two years. Every time I took it I experienced severe foot cramps. Also, in addition to severe acid reflux and regurgitation, it caused me to get bleeding cracks in all of my fingers (I had to bandage all of them) which would go away whenever I stopped it. Then it began to cause me chest pains and a pounding heartbeat that also resolved when I stopped taking it. The doctor tried switching me to Actonel, a similar drug, but all the symptoms that Fosamax had caused also appeared with Actonel. F 61 2 years

1  Osteoporosis Severe pain in the rib cage and hips. A fracture in a thoracic vertebra. A "burning" feeling in the heart. I've made a lot of research on the net after stopping taking Fosamax. It's a fact that Fosamax can cause fractures. It's also a fact that you must not take Fosamax if you suffer from vitamin D deficiency. A doctor told me that if you take Fosamax AND suffer from vitamin D deficiency it'll accellerate an irreversible loss of bone mass. I suffered from vitamin D deficiency which I didn't know. From my research I now know that doctors should do a blood test to see if the patient suffers from vitamin D deficiency or other diseases. F 61 8 months

1  osteopenia Back and Shoulder pain...heartburn, constipation... While I have had back pain, this is the first time I have had shoulder pain and heartburn. It has taken me 2 months to figure out why I feel like this....then I read this website and realized that the drug is to blame. I am stopping and contacting my doctor. My left shoulder and arm pain today is almost unbearable. If anyone experienced a side effect from stopping, please comment. F 61 12 weeks

1  osteoporosis A lot of pain in my back & hip. A cracked root of a tooth. Tired all the time & an over all feeling of being sick. I felt like I was dieing very slowly. Severe heartburn caused stomach cells to be growing up in my esogaphas. After getting off of Foxamax for over a year still have to take a pill for heartburn every day. Never had heartburn before Fosamax. I would rather die from Osteoporosis than take this drug again. This drug can stay in your system for 10 yrs. I wish I had never taken it. I will never again take anything without checking into it first. F 61 6 days

1  osteoporosis Belching, GERD, gastric distress, gas, severe leg and hip pain, burning deep bone pain in left leg, lump formed on left wrist but went away after a week, severe fatigue, severe hip pain when standing for more than 10 minutes......Very difficult to turn over in bed due to hip pain. I am also unable to stay asleep at night because of sever leg pain....I am on prescribed medicine for the heart burn/burping/GERD (Zegerid and zantac)but these meds have helped very little. I was on prescribed pain medicine but that medicine caused more problems. I use a heating pad or ice pack for my leg pain when it gets intolerable. Each week the symptoms get worse. I felt like I was 91 instead of 61. I am scared of Fosomax and stopped taking it for the second time a week ago. Each time I stopped the Fosomax the pains in my legs and hip began to vanish within four days. Eight days have gone by and I have hardly any pain. I will not take this bisphosphonate drug again. Actonel and Evista also caused severe leg pain. I will go the natural route with calcium and Vitamin D in Caltrate, yogurt and milk, weight lifting and walking for weight bearing exercise. Also I will get into the sunshine for the natural vitamin D. I appreciate this web site for its information for the public. F 61 2 days

1  osteopenia Steadily increasing pain from my waist down: lower back, hips, and all of my legs and feet. My skin hurt, my muscles hurt, and my bones hurt. Had to sleep with a pillow between my knees and I couldn't stand for them to touch each other. I used to walk about 2 or 3 miles every other day, and I could barely walk around the block every few days. Going up and down stairs was almost impossible. I have 2 parrots, and I line their cages with newspaper, or I probably wouldn't have seen an article in my local newspaper about the bad side effects of Fosamax. I hadn't read the paper that day. I had been taking Fosamax for a year, and I can't believe that I NEVER ASSOCIATED the problems I had with Fosamax. I started taking Fosamax right after my 60th birthday, and somehow associated the increase in aches and pains to my age. My family doctor, who prescribed Fosamax said it couldn't possibly be the medicine, and she sent me to an orthopedic, who gave me Kenalog shots in my knees and prescribed physical therapy. Neither of which helped. My doctor suggested glucosamine and MSM, and also gave me a prescription for prednisone, which I threw up right after taking. Bottom line: after reading the article, I skipped the next dose of Fosamax, which was supposed to be taken the next morning. It has been ONE WEEK, and already I feel at least 90% better. Knees are slightly achey, and F 61 13 months

1  osteoporosis I took fosamax for about a year and a half, my doctor took me off of it because I had ulcers in my esophagus. I am lucky that he took me off fosamax. I had knee pain, extreme fatigue, crawling skin in my lower legs, knee pain, acid reflux, floaters in my eyes, blurred vision and one eye has a haze over it, itching on my lower arms (so bad that I had sores from scratching so much.) terrible pain in my rib cage and back. I went to my GP about hurting in my ribs and back and he ran all kinds of test and they all came back normal. I think he thought it was all in my head. I also went to my gastro dr. and he thought it may be from my gallbladder. So I had my gallbladder taken out, but the pain was still there. After reading the letters from this web site. I am sure all my pain was from fosamax. But I don't know where to go from here with my bone loss problem. If anyone has any answers on this, please email me. My bone dr. said I needed to start on Evista, but I am not going to take that either. I still have all my aches and pains and I have been off this medicine for almost a year. I feel like I am 80 years old. F 61 1 years
