FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Poor results on bone density test I took once weekly 70 mg dose of generic Fosamax made by Teva for four weeks, but had failed to read/follow directions properly and took it at bedtime after my evening meal. I noticed no bad effects at that timie but learned it would do me no good taking it like that. I waited about ten days and then took ONE DOSE properly before eating and followed all instructions. I was fine for about 24 hours and then WHAM! I didn't know what happened to me - for the past two days I have suffered horrible heartburn and upper stomach pain, sore neck, and severe pain/spasms in left side of my back. (I also have become aware that for two or three weeks I have had swollen ankles and have never had that before.) I decided to surf the net for information and found this site. I will not take this drug ever again. I just hope this esophagus/heartburn pain goes away. I am getting relief when I can belch, but it keeps coming back. It's hard to imagine one dose can do all this! My doctor says I need something to improve my bone density. I think I will just take Tums or a calcium supplement. My mother had this problem and used Tums. She got along fine and died of cancer at 84 years of age. I'm 67 and think I'll be better off doing as she did that to have this awful stomach, heartburn, and back pain. F 67 1 days

1  Osteoporosis (in wrist) I was given Fosemax because I was on Prednisone for a couple of years. I thought it was the right thing to do to stop further osteoporosis. After 28 months I had a severe episode of Vertigo, was hospitalized and took six weeks to get my balance back so I could walk without a cane and it left me with significant hearing loss and constant ringing in my left ear. In addition I have pain under my left breast on my ribcage. I have severe muscle pain on my right arm. I have leg cramps some nights, I am always nauseous and fatigued. I stopped the Fosemax against my doctors wishes. I began to feel that she didn't care about my side effects and discomfort, or that the Fosemax was making me much worse than I was. Before starting Fosemax I was healthy and active. I teach 5 Tap dance classes a week and I know the bones in my legs and feet are strong. If I wasn't so tired I could also do the Silversmithing that always kept my wrists strong. Instead, this drug was threatening to take away all I had. I wish I'd looked into this long ago. Now I don't know how long it will take to recover from these side effects, if recovery is possible. Is there any information about side effects going away? F 67 3 years

1  bone loss I took my first one yesterday. I woke up in the middle of the night and felt as if a bomb had gone off in my body. My stomach was on fire, and my legs. My head hurts to the point, I can hardly walk. My eyes hurt. My hand hurts. My groin hurts as well as my thigh. I am flushed and feel like I have the flu but no symptoms of flu or cold. Just miserable. My chest is tight as well. I woke up with sores in my mouth or developing. I couldn't work today...hope to tomorrow. I'm never taking this drug again...EVER! This drug should be pulled. I am grateful for all these honest testimonies. I am glad I only took one...hopefully I'll recover by tomorrow. F 67 1 days

1  Osteoporosis Severe bone pain in feet, hands, fingers, wrists, elbows, lower back, nausea, bad taste in mouth, creepy crawly feeling under the skin, overall exhaustion and some depression. I previously posted my problems as female, age 67, email: [email protected] I have been off this stuff since July 2nd, 2006 and have had no let up of symptoms. I know it takes a long time to subside, but is there anyone out there who is now symptom free and if so, how long did it take. I am beginning to get desparate, as I have been living with the pain for 6 months now. Thank you. F 67 6 months

1  diagnosed spinal fractures Was prescribed this because of spinal fractures, even tho' scans did not show osteoporosis. From the start until now have experienced a feeling of "unwellness". I have been continually fatigued, appetite has been well down and have experienced night sweats. I have a chronic lung disease (Bronchiectasis) and this has worsened since being on this drug. I have had 5 courses of anti-biotics since starting. I came off this med. for 4 weeks and felt marginally better. My GP told me it was not the Foxamax and should try again. Have done so, and all the above symptoms are again present. It's too much of a co-incidence for it not to be Fosamax. I am going off this med. in spite of what the GP says. I feel so relieved to have found this website. I thankfully have not had some of the other side effects, and feel so sorry for those people who have. What also amazes me is the attitudes of so many GP's - they treat their patients as morons. M 67 4 months

1  Osteopenia Severe pain and delayed healing in jaw (extraction area) due to a dental extraction. Long term antibiotics were used and ultimately surgery was necessary on bone and gum to remove tissue. My jaw took nearly two years to heal and I still have discomfort occasionally. I had been off of Fosamax for about six months when it became necessary to have a tooth extracted but after being on Fosamax for over 7 years, it was clearly in my system. It has now been nearly four years since I stopped taking it. My dentist told me that Fosamax remains in the body for approximately 10 years. Horrible!! I would never take this type of medication ever again! When anyone asks me about this medication my answer is to never start taking it! F 67 8 years

1  recently diagnosed osteoporosis Took as prescribed first thing in a.m. Waited an hour before eating breakfast. Then went about my daily activities which included a long walk in the park. No issues. HOWEVER, as I went to bed and lay my head down on the pillow I IMMEDIATELY felt some "bubbling up in the throat." I added two pillows to prop my head up which eased the acid situation. I couldn't sleep and began to notice PAIN throughout every bone in my body! In the morning following the initial dosage I felt bloated and flatulent and weird in the throat area (difficulty swallowing). Had slight diarrhea on first bowel movement, which continued throughout the day. Hurt all over, which was depressing as my doctor suggested this Rx was going to be a permanent fixture in my life! Are you kidding! I QUIT AFTER ONE TABLET! FOSAMAX IS A DANGEROUS DRUG!!!! MY DOCTOR WILL HEAR ABOUT THIS FROM ME! 67 1 days

1  osteoporosis My husband and I walked the dog 5 miles each day, I had no health problems. Doctor ordered a bone density test and prescribed Fosamax. After the first dose, I could only walk about 1 block and had to return home because of the pain in my back, hips, knees and ankles. I was told the side effects were temporary. I decided on my own to quit taking the drug after 4 months. It has now been 11 months since I quit and I still have joint pain and muscle cramps and pain in my legs, arms, hands and buttocks. I don't trust doctors anymore. Isn't their first responsibility to "Do no harm?" Don't take this drug without researching fully. F 67 4 months

1  Osteopenia Extreme hip and joint pain. I have trouble standing after being seated for a short while I've had an overall weakness in my legs, arms and shoulders. My neck, knees and ankles creak like I was 100 years old. I thank God that I found this site. I've always been strong and healthy, so I thought, "what's happening to me?" My doctor kept saying, you're getting older you know.It was so depressing not being able to do the things I was used to, like kayaking, riding my bike and taking long walks. Fosamax took that all away. I hope it comes out of my system soon. DON'T TAKE THIS DRUG! F 67 18 months

1  Osteoporosis After being on Fosamax for two months, my feet tingle and it is painful to walk; I have been unable to stay asleep at night and waken with feelings of anxiety. I went to my general practitioner thinking I must have diabetic neuropathy or something, to have such severe foot pain, but the doctor said I DON'T have diabetes and all my blood tests came out normal. He didn't even consider complications with Fosamax. Since he couldn't find anything wrong with me, he prescribed a tranquilizer for my anxiety, and sent me on my way. I intend to stop taking Fosamax. Since reading the comments posted on this site, I know what is causing my problem. F 67 2 months

1  Osteoporosis Severe chest pain, muscle spasms, abdominal bloating and pain, flu-like symptoms. I took one dose of the weekly (70mg). Later that same day I had severe pain across my chest (like they describe a heart attack), muscle spasms in the back of my legs, arms ached. The next day the chest pain was gone but I had abdominal pain and bloating, diarreha and flu-like symptoms. These lessened as the week wore on. It took another week (without taking Fosamax) before I felt like myself again. My doctor does not want to me try that again. He has offered several other alternatives. I haven't made up my mind which way to go since that was such a bad experience. I had taken to daily (10 mg) dose several years ago and the only side effect I felt was mild muscle pain and stiffness. Also for some unknown reason my fingernails broke off to the cuticle. After stopping the medicine by fingernails became normal again. Has anyone had chest pain when taking this medicine? It seems to to attack all my muscles, including my heart. I haven't heard of this before. F 67 1 days

1  Osteoporosis Started Fosamax in Jan 06. My sympoms started 2 months later. Terrible pain in feet, hands, wrists, elbows, nausea, creepy crawly feeling under my skin, loss of energy and sleep. No pain meds help. After many blood tests, some of them repeated, my rheumatologist has decided my sympotoms are from taking this drug. Prior to my taking this, as of 7 months ago, I was working out for 1-1/2 hours 3-4 days a week. Now I can barely get out of bed or off the couch. This is a life altering experience for me. I stopped July 2, 2006, so I have a long way to go to get this resolved and to become pain free. I never experienced any of these symptoms prior to Fosamax. If anyone out there can give me some hope for a better future, please email me. I welcome all responses. Thank you. I talked to 4 separate pharmacists in my city and not one of them upon my questioning would mention these potential problems. I am on a cruscade to give patients options when prescribed this medication. People need to know it can cause these terrible problems. F 67 3 months
