FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  osteopenia None A little over two years ago, I saw my doctor because of horrible back and neck pain. An X-Ray allowed my doctor to identify an unexplained compression fracture at C6. That lead to a DEXA scan and the diagnosis of osteopenia. My doctor prescribed 35 mg of FOSAMAX once a week. I must confess that I find FOSAMAX very expensive for my budget, so I have skipped some weeks as other medications have a higher priority for me. Today I learned that a November 6, 2006 DEXA scan was normal. I'm very happy to learn this. I have had no side effects that I could idenitify or otherwise attribute to FOSAMAX. I'm very satisfied with the results I have obtained from FOSOMAX. Thanks. M 67 2 years

5  osteopenia None, except my bone scans show improvement every year. I take the Alendronate Sodium with eight 8 ounces of water every Monday. I have never had any adverse side effects. Last year I had to have a wisdom tooth pulled which required a blood test to determine my calcium count. It was normal. Any aches and pains I have I consider them normal signs of aging! F 67 8 years

4  Osteopenic and taking femara Hardly any gastric effect. Some jaw pain on one side that my dentist does not associate with Fosamax - I have had a lot of work on that side too and have a history of TMJ - but I am watching this closely. I am on the once-weekly dose of the generic form of this drug along with a daily Femara. After a year, my bone density had gone from osteopenic to normal. I drink a 16-oz glass of water and am careful about sitting upright and not eating for 30-45 minutes. The dentist did suggest that I might not need to take Fosamax continuously for the entire five years I am on Femara and I will discuss this with the oncologist. F 67 19 months

4  Osteoporosis (T of -2.5) No side effects. My T-score improved from -2.5 to -2.4 after taking it for 2 years. I then took a 2 year holiday, and am taking it for 2 more years. After treatment ends I'll have occasional BD scans to be sure I'm maintaining bone density. I also go to a exercise class specifically developed for bones and balance, and plan on doing that for life. Worked; no side effects for me. F 67 3 years

2  osteopenia Intolerable leg pain, weakness. I used to hike long distances regularly, and after taking the drug walking one block was painful. There was severe pain when starting to move legs, such as when getting up from bed or a chair. My legs would just stop working when doing physical activity. There was no paralysis, but they were tired, painful, and weak. I stopped taking the drug six weeks ago. I'm still experiencing the weakness and pain. What can I do to recover from the side effects? While I was on the drug I had a positive test for muscle degeneration. After stopping, the test was OK. The symptoms were so severe I was tested for Multiple Sclerosis and spinal stenosis. If anyone has figured out how to recover from the pain, email me at: b o b @ l e n s j o y . c o m (remove the spaces when typing my address.) M 67 3 years

2  osteoporosis I took fosamax once a day for 3 years and had one experience with burning in my esophagus. My doctor said stop fosamax for a week and take mylanta. I started taking fosamax again and after 3 years I started taking it once a week and experienced bloating. After 10 months of taking fosamax once a week, I started having problems with acid reflux and then one doctor finally told me to stop taking fosamax. The acid reflux problem and the medications the doctors were giving me sent me in a tail spin of complications which took me over 2 years to get myself off all prescription medicine and to begin to feel like a normal person again. I had never had an acid reflux problem before and could eat whatever I wanted to eat. Now, I have to watch my diet. I also started having joint pain in my hips after I started taking fosamax. I can't say this pain was from the fosamax, but it has come and gone over the years. It would be severe pain that hit in the early morning before I got out of bed and then F 67 4 years

2   In researching my symptoms on the Internet, now I am realizing that Fosamax and Allendronate are probably the cause of my problems. I have been having pain in my upper left leg and am waiting to hear about my dexa-scan results. In addition, 2 years ago I was immediately taken off the Allendronate when I had chest pains. It was not cardiovascular but rather I found I had Barrett's disease (pre-cancerous condition of the esophagus). I attribute this to the caustic nature of both Fosamax and Allendronate. I never did get any indication that the drugs improved my osteopenia.! F 67 8 years

2  osteopenia The next day I could not move at all, my chest ribs all over my back hurt. My muscles felt like I had a charlie horse over my whole body.I could not get out of bed or flex a muscle. Could not go to the bath room in time. After two days of this I went to the emergency room. I was told to take a mustle relaxant, but it did not work. I was told to take Motrin, and it worked for a while. I had that pain for a week and a half. I did not know if it was the Fosamax, because I had been bending down for hours putting in flower in the garden. The Dr. told me to skip a week. I did that and the pain came back , but not as severe. My pain comes in all my joints and all over my back. I never had pain like that in my life, I could not talk because I was in so much pain. F 67 2 weeks

1  Ostiopenia Severe vertigo, floaters, flu-like symptoms, tinnitus accompanied by sudden hearing loss, flu-like symptoms, bone spur or ganglia on wrist, arms, shoulders and legs very painful and severe cramps. I was taking Fosamax with Arimidex for Stage I breast cancer. Many of the side effects of these two drugs are the same so I thought there might have been synergistic (additive) effects of the two drugs. I am very sorry I took the two drugs mentioned. My oncologist switched me back to Tamoxifen although this drug has many bad side effects also. F 67 2 years

1  Fosamax for mild osteopenia in hip Terrible headaches for two days after the day on which I took the weekly tablet. Aches and pains all over - had to stay in bed for two days - and loss of energy. Bad pain behind one eye - and as I am using drops to lower pressure in my eyes to prevent further damage (glaucoma) this really worried me. My doctor said none of this worried him and he would only be concerned if I were unable to swallow. After the fifth weekly tablet I had severe stomach pains and decided to discontinue. I think the possible side effects are frightening and would prefer to do weight lifting and change my diet rather than risk this drug. Maybe something new will come out in the near future that will be safer and pleasanter. F 67 5 weeks

1  beginning of ostioporosis just found a fractured vertebrae #3 lumbar, terrible pain in lower back, shoulders and neck. Will have vertebra plasty to fix fracture and never use Fosamax again. I have taken this drug for 14 months after a fall caused me to get a bone scan indicating i had early stage osteoporsis. Since I have had tremendous pain. This week my new doctor ran a new bone scan and found a fracture in my 3rd lumbar vertebrae. I did nothing really physical except water therapy, yet I have a break. Today was supposed to take my dose of Fosamax, and I was hurting so bad, not only in my vertebrae area that I looked for some comments about side effects of Fosamax. Thank God for this information, as another person said, I thought i was dying of something because I was in so much pain. I will report it to the FDA. F 67 14 months

Cracking sound in neck, cough, gastric irritation req. med. constipation, stiff gai, stumbling, burning feet, horrible, debilitatingleg cramps hs in feet and calves, blurred vision. Just stopped taking it. Dr. wants me to take Fosamax but I'll take my chances with supplements. My dentist has warned me about the jaw problems associated with Fosamax. may b more than 10 years. The burning feet and cramps are horrible. MD's can't explain cause of problem. Have seen several in different specialties. F 67 10 years

1  low bone density in my right hip From the beginning I had chest pains and I felt awful. I thought that I was having a heart attack. I have stopped taking the drug not only because of chest pain and pain in my left elbow but I am consistently bothered by heart burn with any foods that I eat. My doctor gave me a scare and said if I fell and broke a hip I would have to go to a nursing home. I would not recommend this medication to anyone. I'll just continue taking my calcium tablets and try to eat food that contain calcium and get lots of sunlight. F 67 3 years

1  osteoporosis Incapacitating pain without relief for 2 months after a single dose I took one 75mg tablet and within a few hours muscle pain started throughout my body. It was worse the next day, and 60 days later is still at the same level. I have no energy, constant pain, and occasional nausea. I had *none* of this before the Fosamax and was generally healthy. This is all from a single tablet of Fosamax. The FDA describes it like this: http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/DrugSafety/PostmarketDrugSafetyInformationforPatientsandProviders/ucm124165.htm This is the worst mistake I've ever made. M 67 1 days
