FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Osteopenia Pain in right shoulder, arm, left and right rib cage, left hip and back plus joint between right thumb and lst finger. Pain is mostly in muscles and nerves. This pain has been very debilitating. I am on constant pain medication and am now using a walker or wheelchair. All x-rays and blood tests have been normal. This started soon after I had a tooth extracted by an oral surgeon on 2/1/08. I have been taking Fosamax for 9 years. F 79

1  osteoporosis I am reading and writing because my mom, who is 79, took Fosamax for many years (maybe 8 or 10?). She doesn't take it any more because the dr says she is ok now. BUT about 3-4 yrs ago her toes started bending and lapped over the tops of each other and it has caused her a lot of foot pain. She had 2 toes amputated in Sept 08 that were pretty much growing sideways. Besides the issues with her feet, she is now 5'1" and used to be 5'7". Can't say that Fosamax has made a believer out of me. Since my mom has osteoporosis, I had my first scan 2 yrs ago, at age 54, and was diagnosed with osteopenia and osteoporosis....no surprise. I refused to take the Fosamax, Boniva, or Actonil and decided to take a good grade food-based calcium that I get at a health food store instead. It is calcium from food, so digests easily. My bone scan recently showed "significantly improved" and I now have NO osteoporosis, and only one area has osteopenia! Take CALCIUM! I wonder if my mom's outcome would have been different with calcium instead of Fosamax...???!!!??? 79 8 days

1  osteoporosis/osteopenia I'm a 78 yr. old woman with diagnosed osteoporosis/osteopenia. I was put on fosamax three yrs. ago and have had nothing but pain everywhere to the point of having to use a cane to walk. Could not put on shoes because of the swelling. Could not get out of bed half the time and the pain in back caused me to go to a pain clinic for epidurals. The shots didn't work after a short time so turned to accupuncture. Was OK but was told not to exercise. My friend showed me copies of your responses to this website and took the chance that my problems were related to fosamax. My doctor told me not to go off the fosamax. After only a few days I noticed a huge difference in my condition. Now after two months off fosamax I have returned to my old self. I do worry that the debilitating condition I've been subjected to will cause me further harm...back problems from walking funny due to pain, hip problems, knee, overall joint deformity. This is some bad stuff. I write this for my friend who does not have a computer but I showed her excerpts from this website and wanted to respond too. F 78 3 years

1  slight thining in left hip I took fosamax about 6 years ago, never had any problems. This was just a pre caution. After having a bone denisty test a year ago it showed a slight thining in left hip. They suggested taking fosmax. I was also taking cholesterol med. I started having mucle cramps, back pains, hip pains, knee pain. I blamed it on my cholesterol med. so i stopped taking that. Nothing went away. I did research on fosmax. Then my insurance co.sent me generic for fosamx. i took that for 2 months then started having bad breathing problems. my doctor sent me for a stress test to check out my heart, which was fine. I then stopped taking the drug. After about 1 month my breathing is better. I have no intention of taking this drug again. my other pains are easing up, but not gone as of yet.I would suggest that any body still taking fosamax, and having these problems, stop taking it. See for your self if stopping it helps you. F 77 12 months

1  osteopororsis Listen to this, I didn't take fosamax because of this site! Thank you all for the warning! So I went to a GNC and thought I found a great natural alternative called Ipriflavone (Ostivone) I took one and woke up at 5am with horrible hip and stomach pain! Sound familar? It's been 11 days and feel only slightly better in the AM for about 20-30 min. After 20-30 min pain again! I sure hope this dosn't last long, has anyone else have experience with this Ipriflavone? Isn't cyanide (spelling ?) natural too? F 77 0 days

1  doctor said I need it for osteoporo Terrible heartburn, got stomach health back with chamomille tea. Presently trying to counteract neck and shoulder pain (which I never had before) with exercise. Pervading head aches slowly going away after stopping to take fosamax (against doctor's orders. Well, he doesn't live in my body, so.) Marcelle Pick M.D. states in her article "Osteoporisis and Fosamax": "The inflammatory nature of bisphosphonates makes sense when you think that this is a class of drug in the same family as cleansing powders."  1  No, Actonel The morning following my first Actonel dose, I awoke with severe chest pain and difficulty in breathing. A trip to Patient First indicated the problem was not associated with any heart problem. Because the reaction was listed as a possible side effect of the medication, I will go another route - not Fosamax either. F 77 1 days
