FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

2  ostioperosis Within 8 hours of taking Fosamax I began to feel 'strange'. 4 hours after that I had waves of nausea, severe stomach cramps, gas and the sensation I would have diarrhea. I felt as though I was on fire and at the same time I felt as though I was freezing. I had difficulty sleeping. When I did sleep I had disturbing dreams that every cell in my body was mutating. The following morning I had some joint aches and pains. It was difficult to stand up straight. And I felt groggy like I had jet lag. I won't take it again. F 54 1 days

2  Osteopenia Aching all over, joint pain, especially my elbows and knees. In the first few weeks of taking it I felt like I had the flu. I have been on this medication for over 10 years. I have been experiencing bad pain all over recently including my jaw. I feel like I have rhematoid arthritis or something. No one seems concerned about this but me. I have decided to stop taking this medication. F 54 10 years

1  Osteopenia They are finally noticing! From the FDA MedWatch: Bisphosphonates (marketed as Actonel, Actonel+Ca, Aredia, Boniva, Didronel, Fosamax, Fosamax+D, Reclast, Skelid, and Zometa) Audience: Orthopedic Surgeons, other healthcare providers, patients [Posted 01/07/2008] FDA informed healthcare professionals and patients of the possibility of severe and sometimes incapacitating bone, joint, and/or muscle (musculoskeletal) pain in patients taking bisphosphonates. Although severe musculoskeletal pain is included in the prescribing information for all bisphosphonates, the association between bisphosphonates and severe musculoskeletal pain may be overlooked by healthcare professionals, delaying diagnosis, prolonging pain and/or impairment, and necessitating the use of analgesics. The severe musculoskeletal pain may occur within days, months, or years after starting a bisphosphonates. Some patients have reported complete relief of symptoms after discontinuing the bisphosphonate, whereas My ob/gyn urged me to take Fosamax after my first routine post-menopausal bone scan. Decided not to take this drug, after reading these comments and doing research. Increasing calcium intake and adding more walking, weight training instead. F 54 0 days

1  osteporosis There are so many I don't know where to begin. I can relate to just about everone else's horror stories. I too have pain so bad that I can hardly function. I already have severe pain with fibromyalgia and arthirits and am on pain meds and muscle relaxants that help those symptoms somewhat but taking the fosamax made my pain impossible to live with. I have a very high pain tolerence but with this drug its more than I can take. I am so glad I found this site, it has helped me so much. The bad part is that I didn't find it until 2 weeks after I stopped taking it!!! I thought I was just having more pain with weather, etc., but after I found this site it made sense now. This site made me more positive than ever what this drug has done to me. Will this type pain ever go away?? Even after 2 weeks off it I still fell horrible. I too take good care of myself with vitamins and such, and I will continue in that way. I feel that this drug stops boneloss this way..'it kills you, so you can't lose This drug should have been monitored more agressively and because it hasn't been, the quality of life for so many has diminished extensively. But what do we do now?? Are these side effects so bad that some of us may not get much better off this, if at all, or must we suffer the consequeces of this drug indefinitely??? Even after the first dose I felt bad but thought ,sometimes it takes a few doses of med for a body to accostom itself but with each additional dose I got sicker and sicker until I had way enough and quit. 2 weeks later and I still feel awful and wonder if it didn't trigger other problems within my body???Anything that makes you feel this bad surely can't be good!!!  1  Osteoporosis Sharp pain in my abdomen that took my breath away. Neck, shoulder, back and chest pain. All my joints felt like I just ran a marathon. I took my first dose on the once weekly tab on Sunday morning at 8am and closely followed the instructions. Initially felt great, in fact, I thought my little aches went away and had a warm feeling in my bones. I might have imagined that though. I was up and active all day. Then I sat down at 8:30pm. I soon started getting chest pains and aches all over my body. By Monday morning I could barely walk and had sharp pains throughout my midsection that took my breath away. Called the bone doctor and he suggested it might be a coincidence and to call my primary. The primary told me to go to the emergenct room. After the initial look I was admitted to the hospital and spent the next day and a half taking tests. Gall bladder, heart, vascular, liver and gastro tract all came up normal. I do not smoke or drink. For the past year I have eaten no meat or dairy and exercise 4 to 5 times a week. There's no really good reason for this. Without saying it, I think the doctors now agree that teh Fosamax did not agree with me. It's day number 4 and I'm still feeling achy. My primary said it might be a week or more before I'm feeling better. He said over 200 of his patients take Fosamax and I trust him. He has no reason to mislad me and he did not prescribe it to me. While I'm told that this can be a wonder drug, it's not for everybody. I'm also told that they have to give you this first because the insurance companies won't pay for the more expensive drug.  1  osteoporosis Horrible flu symptoms, became worse each of the four weeks I took Fosamax. I ached all over, felt nauseated, exhausted, couldn't sleep, felt feverish. The first day was fine, the next mornng (day 2), I was slammed by what felt like flu, days 3 and 4 were just as bad. Each week the side effects were more pronounced. I will not keep taking it. Horrible drug. I've never experienced side effects like this with ANY medication. F 54 4 weeks

1  Osteoporosis I took Fosamax Plus D (70mg/2800IU) once weekly for 5 weeks. Severe pain in my up right jaw between mouth and ear happened in my two week of taking the pills. I also experienced significant muscle pain behind my right ear. I didn’t associate my pains with the Fosamax at the beginning. Then I noticed that they have cycle. I took the medicine on Sunday. The pains came on Monday and mostly subsided on Friday, and then came back on Monday after taking another pill. I am stopping this medicine now. This is the first week I feel pain free after more than three weeks of suffering! F 54 5 weeks

1  Bone density test Symptoms are bluring eyes, tiredness, not sleeping, terrible fatigue, hip pain, severe bone and muscle pain even in my back and rib cage. Did not have any before taking Fosamax. I am very active but after taking Fosamax I feel like I am 100 years old and can no longer do any of the exercises that I did on a daily basic before Fosamax. Every bone and muscle in my body hurts all the time and fatigue all day the day that I take the pill. I thought that this drug was suppose to help me and all it has done is make me feel bad. So I think I will take my chances and stop taking. I hope I will feel better soon. If anyone can help please e-mail me back. F 54 1 months

1  Ostopenia Been taking once a week for 1 1/2 years with no problems. A couple months ago started having pain in hands and feet. This has spread rapidly to all joints, muscles, everything. Low energy and cannot walk or do other exercise now. Went to Dr. thinking it must be cancer or arthritis or something drastic. First thing she said was stop taking the Fosamax. All blood tests came back showing nothing to even follow up on. I feel like crap, seriously! Skipped my weekly dose today and glad I found this website. All symptoms reported by others are exactly what I feel. Hope this will get out of my system at some point soon so I can get my life back! F 54 1.5 years

1  osteopenia took for 3.5 years. Early in taking 70 mg weekly, walked stiff legged at the ankles and experience weird taste in my mouth. Later on suffered from rib pain(inflammation). Also experienced the feeling of my bottom lip pulling (spasm). Into the 2nd and 3rd year of taking, starting having major palpitations (PVCs), so I now see a cardiologist. Finding about the jaw necrosis was the topper. This was not in the brochure accompanying Fosamax when I started taking it -- nor the palpitations. In further investigation, I see that 50% of women who take this develop A-Fibrillation/arrhythmia problems. My dentist told me even though I just recently stopped taking, that it's in my system and bones forever and that when ten years go by (even though I stopped taking it), I'm at risk now for bone problems in my jaw (especially if I ever need an extraction) HAD I KNOWN ALL OF THIS, I WOULD HAVE NEVER TAKEN THIS DRUG! I would never recommend this to anyone and would tell women to just keep on ex F 54 3 years

1  Doctor recommended Every joint in my body ached. Extreme right heel pain, upper teeth sensitivity to hot/cold and pain biting down. Loss of energy or desire to do anything but set on couch. Dizzy, unbalanced feeling and unable to focus on tasks. Developed hard bumps under my skin on my right palm. Body stiff and hard to straighten up after lying or setting for short period of time. Felt 100 yrs old with all the body aches I experienced. I was on no other medications so I know this had to be the results of Fosamax. When I read the other posts I could not believe how many people have been affected by this medicine. I stopped taking it 10 days ago and hope the side effects go away soon. Especially the heel pain that makes walking painful. F 54 10 months

1  diagnosed osteoporosis Within 3 days of taking the first 70 mg pill, I began to notice heart "flutters" when ever I was sitting still. At first I only had a few per hour. As each day went by they increased to 1 or 2 per minute. I couldn't find anything listed on the internet linking Fosamax and heart problems so I took the second dose. Within 20 hours, I woke up with extreme anxiety and feelings of stress. It felt like I had had 20 cans of Mountain Dew. I then began monitoring my heart rate. It is running much higher than normal and I am in excellent shape - working out 7 days a week. It felt like it was racing even when I was standing still. It is now 6 days, since the last dose. The tension is gone, my heart does not seem to race as much, but I still have a much higher heart rate prior to taking the drug. I am NOT going to take the 3rd dose. I would rather deal with the effects of osteoporosis as opposed to having a stroke or heart attack as a result of trying to increase my bone dens F 54 14 days

1  Osteopenia Very painful knees, hips, and lower back, unable to go to right to sleep, then the pain wakes me up several times during the night I have only taken two doses. The first week went fine. This week, is terrible. I was crying today, in pain, and decided to research Fosamax on the internet. I found this site. I will not take anymore. Thank you! F 54 2 days

1  osteopenia I took the first Fosamax plus D,70mg, a couple of weeks ago. It didn't bother my stomach except for severe bloating that day but I thought I could live with that. I didn't feel well in general. I had a flu like achy feeling all over my body. I thought maybe I had been doing too much and it would go away. Then last Friday I took the second dose(it was the once a week form) and by Friday evening was feeling awful all over but still no heartburn even though I have a hiatal hernia. I didn't sleep well and by Saturday morning every joint in my body ached and my hands were swollen. My jaw joint ached severely in addition to my hands and wrists. I could not close my jaw for almost a week. It seemed to be "stuck" as well as in pain. My left wrist and hand is still in pain. I would not recommend this medication. In this case, because of the potential side effects of Fosamax, I have decided to just take a calcium with magnesium and vitamin D supplement. F 54 2 days

1   I have been on fosamax for 3 months, and noticed that my voice became hoarse, and I felt conjested most of the time. I saw a specialist who diagnosed me with GERD, but prilosec, which he prescribed, did not clear my symptoms. Later I started having chills on the weekends when I took my weekly dose, and also felt dizzy and tired. Last two weeks, I developed terrible heartburn, mettalic taste in my mouth, as well as severe lower back pain. I also was diagnosed with carpal boss, a bone spur on my wrist, which grew last month and may or may not be related to taking fosamax. I have not had any of these symptoms prior to taking fosomax, except for the back pain, which I last had a few years ago. I am 54 and used to be healthy. It took me three months to suspect fosamax as the cause of my ailments. My gp just took me off the drug, so we can see if the symptoms clear out. It is too bad, doctors were not suspecting anything and I had to figure it out myself. Obviously, there is not enough infor 54 3 years
