FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  osteopenia Doctor prescribed a low dosage back in 2001. About a year later, I started experiencing stiffness in the hip and shoulder areas. Decided I needed more exercise, but that made it worse. Simple bending and moving became a chore. In fact, the soreness and stiffness made it difficult to get out of bed or a chair after sitting for 20 or so minutes. The doctor diagnosed it as polymyalgia, and he put me on prednisone. I stopped taking the Fosamax as the side effects matched my soreness and stiffness of the shoulder and hip areas. I suspected then that Fosamax was at the crux of the problem. It took about a year to get back to normal. Now my new doctor wants me to start taking Fosamax(70mg)once a week. She feels that the polymyalgia is not related to the Fosamax, but after reading the comments on this website and seeing many of my symtoms listed, I won't chance it. Instead, I will go the natural way--eat right, take calcium with vitamin D, and buy the osteoball for bone density exercises. F 65 1 years

1  osteo i had every possible side effect imaginable. e r trips now after 4 yrs,,i still have symptoms from then,,shoulder, neck pain,,,burning feet etc..all caused and started when i put these terrible poison pills in my system..and last yr my gyno gave me a pres. for once a yr foxamax ,,,which went into the trash,,,I cannot believe they allow these meds like fosamax, actonel, boniva, and evista..to stay on the market,,,aall i can say is someone is making out from all this and the fda just closes their eyes to everything...all these meds belong in the garbage and would not even give it to a rat. the fda should take them off the market....but wont if millions of dollars are in the making. the heck with the outcome..  1  osteopenia I take no prescription drugs but due to bone scan, started taking this drug 9/06...in June of 07, started experiencing pain in left upper arm; also began to have problems in swallowing food so I stopped taking the drug in Sept. of 07...swallowing problems stopped. Pain in both upper arms increased and it is now constant... Could not figure out why pain in arms would not go away...did not make connection between fosamax and muscle pain until FDA said in Jan 08 that doctors may overlook link between these kinds of drugs and severe pain which could occur days, months OR years after starting therapy. Have been doing aerobics for 15 years...no longer can lift 5 lb. weights above my shoulders. F 65 12 months

1  Slight Bone Loss Fosamax was pure hell for me. I was only on it for two weeks. I had burning pains in my left leg which lasted for a week. I also had higher liver readings and BUN Creatine results - very bad. I would not recommend taking Fosamax and I was very careful to take it correctly. Doctors don't inform you fully about all the side effects, and you must do your own research. Read everything you can about this drug before you take it. F 65 14 days

Bloated tight feeling in abdomen severe and chronic fatigue that affected my inability to do anything.W eakness in my thighs, trouble with my balance and falling, unable to walk steady. Stiff like an old lady.  1  low bone density Initial severe joint pain and swelling; numbness and tingling bilaterally in hands and feet. Numbness and tingling have mostly subsided, but three months after stopping the drug, I have continued bilateral swelling in my feet and hands and sore muscles and knees bilaterally. I have also developed exposed bone in my lower right jaw. I can't believe how dehabilitating this drug has been. I was in great shape before taking it and now feel like a very old woman. My swollen hands are painful to use and my body aches most of the time. I know that the half life of Fosamax is ten years and wonder just how long it will take before I see any real improvement in my condition. F 65 5 times

1  osteoporosis poor vision in both eyes I have a rare condition called Retinal Vein Occlusion in my right eye. It's like a stroke in the eye. While I was not taking Fosamax when the occlusion occurred, some retina specialists associate Fosamax with RVO. After I stopped taking Fosamax for other reasons (the jawbone decay problem), the vision in my bad eye gradually improved over the course of a year. 20/20 being normal, my best corrected vision in the bad eye had been 20/70 on Fosamax and slowly improved to 20/40. That is a HUGE difference. My good eye also improved, so that I needed a weaker prescription for glasses. There can't be any other reason, because nothing else happened to me or was done to me. Fosamax is an evil drug. F 65 3 years

1  Osteoporosis diagnosis I have decided not to take this medication after reading this website & other literature. It does sound scary. My MD wants me to take Fosamax for 5 years. My ND (Naturopath Doctor) never said not to take Fosamax. She did state that Vitamin K is supposed to help with osteoporosis of the spine, in particular. I didn't ask my MD about the Vitamin, assuming he wouldn't be as up to date on those things as the Naturopath. I decided to take a supplement with Vitamin K & other vitamins & minerals prescribed by the Naturopath. I plan to have new bone scan in 3 - 6 months & see how things look, but I doubt I will ever go on this med. Am also increasing weight-bearing exercise. F 65 0 days

1  osteoporosis I have constant heartburn and gas. My feet are extremely painful, especially the soles of my feet, I cannot go bare feet even in the house. I have sore joints, painful knees and lower back pain and my right hip hurts so much that I have trouble sleeping. I have been on fosomax for almost 9 years and I thought my arthritis was just getting worse, the last few months have been shear hell, I just stumbled onto this site and realize that it could be the fosomax. I have been on the 70mg 1x week for about three years, prior to that it was 10 mg every day. I will stop taking the fosamax. I mentioned my symptoms to my doctor and he says it is just the osteoarthritis. If I sit for long periods of time I have trouble getting up, I have trouble getting out of the car and I have gained weight even though I have not changed my eating habits. I used to go for long walks, now I cannot walk very far. I also love gardening and cutting the lawn. This has become a real chore because of the pain. On my next visit to my doctor I will tell him about this site and that my symptoms are the same as other persons taking the drug and ask if perhaps he can prescribe something with less side effects.  1  prevention of osteporosis GERD. Flu like feelings, cough, sore throat, dry eyes, general tiredness. I started Fosamax at the suggestion of by GYN after a bone density test, for preventative measures. I always felt "strange" the day I took the 70 mg dosage but really couldn't pin point what it was. Last summer my eye examination had some questions and they continue to have me come back for rechecks. The worse thing I have experienced is GERD. I didn't connect the "flu" that I seemed to be getting all the time with GERD until I went to an ENT and he made the diagnosis and said it could be the Fosamax but wanted me to wait and see the doctor that perscribed it. Finally in November 05 I took myself off of it and saw my GYN in January and he agreed that I should come off of Fosamax immediately and told me the acid reflux (GERD) could be very dangerous. I have had another episode of the "flu" (sore throat, drainage, aching muscles, etc), the doctor's always treat me with an antibiotic. I went to a walk in clinic and that doctor recognized that I was suffe F 65 5 days

1  Osteoperosis Two friends took Fosamax. One friend was a runner, did weight lifting, ate properly, etc., the picture of health. She started taking Fosamax and got where she could not get out of bed, had muscle pain, and started deteriorating. It was Fosamax that did this to her. Finally, she got off of it, but the damage is irreversible. She is never pain free now. Before Fosamax she had no pain. My other friend Londa was taking Fosamax, developed acid reflux disease, esophagus problems, and could not move her neck. A physician told her to get off Fosamax which she did. She can move her neck and feels better. This drug is deadly. Please listen. 65 6 months

1  osteopenis Intense headaches, which were not relieved by any painkiller;severe hip pain and sciatica, joint pain, all-over body pain, crawling sensation of the skin, chronic constipation This drug should be taken off the market., Are there no consumer advocates to publicise the danger of this drug?  1  osteopenia Flu like symptoms - shivering, weakness, dizziness, bone and muscle pain, and no energy on the day after dose was taken (couldn't do anything but lie around). Was prescribed 70 mg once a week, and took for three months. I felt like I was being poisoned, had less and less energy and more and more joint and muscle pain. It got harder to function in everyday tasks because of lack of energy and pain. Finally stopped taking this medication, and after two weeks, am finally feeling almost back to normal, but still have leg pains during the night while trying to sleep. Will tell my physician that I cannot continue with this and will try to increase my physical activity and calcium intake, and hope for the best. Possible side effects should be better explained by your doctor! This was not good for me, and might not be good for you. Beware! F 65 3 months
