FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  low bone density After six years of taking Fosamax, I slipped in ice in my driveway and broke my femur (thigh bone). Two years later, still taking Fosamax, I fell in the snow and my other femur snapped before I hit the ground. There is evidence that, while Fosamax increases bone density, it does not increase bone strength - in fact, it may cause bones to become brittle. Now I am stuck with this substance in my bones for the next half dozen years or so. F 58 8 years

1  doctor's recommendation swelling & tenderness of hands/feet, bodily aches & pains, fatigue; eventual jaw pain & swelling of lower legs It is now 8 months later, and I have been diagnosed with Scleroderma. I was in perfect health before I took Fosamax. Is this just coincidence? F 58 4 weeks

1  osteoporosis It keeps you from loosing bone. New bone is important but it has no where to go since you are holding onto the old bone. Old bone dies. The endocrinologist said it wasn't working. I was put on Forteo. I had to stop after 3 months because it caused extreme spinal pain. I was told to stop all medication and I feel great. She is suggesting I take Altevia. I am not sure what I will do? F 58 8 years

1  Border line Osteoporosis Doctor prescribed Fosamax 10 months ago. Read side effects on the Iternet and was not comfortable going on it but decided to give it a try. After 8 months starting having a burning feeling in stomach, also had intermittent ache to left of sternum and under rib cage. Also, felt muscle aches off an on and I would find myself saying to my husband I just don't feel right. Had a pain in my hand for two weeks. Could not do my push ups because I couldn't put pressure on my hand. Six months ago I had a weekend of extreme abdominal pain. Thought I had appendicitis or it was my gall bladder. Almost went to ER but waited it out and it went away. Now I look back and it must have been the Fosamax. Also, my appetite was not normal. Lost weight while on the Fosamax. No matter what I ate or drank, I would not gain weight. This seems odd to me for someone who is 58 years old and at this age it is usually easy to gain weight. My appetite was so so in the morning, fair at lunch and then it picked up at s I called my doctor and stopped taking it this week to see if my symptoms disappear. Already, the burning has stopped. She said to stop it for 3 weeks, but I am not going back on it. Have done a lot of reading about the alkaline/acid balance and want to treat this diagnosis naturally. I do exercise and will alter my diet. F 58 10 months

1  osteopenia Severe, debilitating lower back pain. Holy Moly! The first time I took Fosomax(generic version)I woke up the next day with agonizing back spasms. I had NEVER had any sort of back problem in my life. I suspected the Fosomax but then decided I must have slept in an odd position. Took a few more doses wih no apprecible effects and then wham! more back pain. It felt like my back was trying to rip itself apart. I actually screamed from the pain every time I moved. I discontinued use for a few months and just took a dose 3 days ago. Next morning, the back pain reappeared though not as bad as past episodes. I wouldn't touch that stuff again if my bones snapped in a stiff breeze. I'll just keep working out wth weights and taking my calcium and Vit D. F 58 4 times

1  osteoporosis rash, face and tongue swelling, sores on the inside of my mouth, severe pain in my thumbs and feet I read this site in late 2005 when I had finally figured out on my own why I was in excruciating pain. I have been off the drug for 5 years and still suffer with foot pain and popping sounds in my feet. I used to be so active and walk and exercise. It has taken the enjoyment out of my life to live with this pain. I don't know if I will ever be myself again. I have been to 2 different foot doctors. No one seems to believe me. I try to be normal but I am preoccupied with the pain. I have about 1/2 the pain that I did 5 years ago but I haven't seen any change in the last 2 years. My thumbs are better but not pain free. This drug ruined my life. There's not point 'doctoring' for the pain. I pray everyday instead. I so wish that I had not been such a compliant patient and followed my doctor's recommendation. Plus, it took me so long to realize that it was the Fosamax. Doesn't it matter to the doctors or drug companies that they have ruined peoples's health when we were happy and healthy prior to taking this drug? F 58 1 years

1  bone loss experienced severe bone and mussel pain, blurred vision, gum loss I could not put my feet on the floor in the morning the pain was so bad, I had to sit on my butt to get down the stairs, I could not roll over in bed without crying. I was always a very active person, this poison debilitated me so I could barely walk. I had several blood test and everything show fine, doctors could not find one thing wrong with me. I even had gum surgery and never had one thing wrong with my teeth prior. I have been off this medicine for 3 yrs now, and feeling better, I know it is still in my system, but at least I can do the things I enjoy now. I would rather suffer a broken bone that live with the side effects that this poison created in my body. I would not recommend this medicine to anyone! If you are wondering why your body is in pain start reading about this poison...... F 58 8 years

1  osteopenia I took fosamax for 3 months. I started experiencing severe pain under both my ribs as well as a very bad pain in my joints. I hurt so bad I thought I was having a heart attack. I went to a new doctor and she told me she never recommended fosamax as it caused many problems in the entire chest area. I was a very healthy person before the fosamax but felt as if I had aged 100 years after taking it for three months. I went to a health food store and was told to take shart cartlidge with glucosamine. It was also recommended that I take collagen. I started on that program and I feel 100% better just after a couple of weeks. F 58 3 months

1  bone density -- osteoporosis I took the first pill on a Friday morning -- 70 mg of Alendronate Sodium (generic Fosamax). On Saturday I began experiencing severe lower back pain. It was the worse back pain I have ever experienced. I could hardly get up from a sitting position. I have a high pain threshold, but this brought me to my knees and had me in tears. On Sunday I still had back pain with occasional back spasms. I am praying the pain goes away by the end of the week. I will not be taking this medicine again. The side effects after one dose are horrible -- I can only imagine what would happen if I continued taking Fosamax or any generic version. F 58 1 days

1  osteoporosis, osteopenia diarrhea, extreme headache, fatigue & exhaustion, leg pain bloating, gas, upper tooth veneer cracked up. Woke up spitting out pieces of my tooth! First time I took this drug I got severe diarrhea. After week 2 the veneer of one of my teeth sheered off. I woke up with crumbled bits of tooth in my mouth. My dentist advised me to STOP taking the drug. After my dental visit, I threw the other 2 pills in the trash. I am now realizing ALL the other symptoms I was having are due to this same medicine: headaches, exhaustion... I'm done with this! F 58 2 weeks

5  osteopenia none that I can ascribe to Foxamax Took this for almost 5 years. My bone density stayed about the same at first, but in this last test it is now up quite a bit and in the NORMAL range - hooray - I also excercise a lot and take calcium (citrate and carbonate, plus a regulated amount of vitamin D in winter and a regulated amount of magnesium and a stool softener, no caffeine). I've worked hard at this and am very conscientious (consciencious??). My Dr. believes there is no reduction in bone breakage past the five year mark on this drug. I am going off and happy.  5  Osteoporosis No bad side effects to date. Very pleased with how the 70-mg once-a-week dose temporarily helps my constant low back pain and shooting leg pain from herniated disk. Was diagnosed with osteopenia at about age 48, then several years later on subsequent bone mineral density test was diagnosed with osteoporosis. It was at that point that I was prescribed Fosamax and have been on it for about 2-1/2 years. Don't know yet how effective it has been at reversing bone disease, and hope that next BMD will show improvement as there is a family history of osteoporosis and related problems, but the relief I get from my chronic back pain is wonderful! Too bad it doesn't last longer. I take omeprazole daily for GERD and hiatal hernia so possibly this is helping to prevent esophageal problems on this medication. F 57 2.5 years

3  Ostopenia After taking it for only a month I noticed pain in my tail bone - only if I press on the bottom of the bone. It felt like I bruised my tail bone. I had it Xrayed to make sure was not a break or tumor -- nothing showed. I think I may stop for a few months and see if it goes away. I exercise regularly -- weight bearing -- and eat a healthy diet and have taken vitamins and calcium for years. I fall into the category of a small boned women. Looking a my mother who is not 83 years old -- and my grandmother who lived to 94 -- they did not have any problems with their bones. I have always been a skeptic about any drugs -- but the doctor has really pushed this one -- I think I'll just take my chances and take more calcium -- drink more milk etc. If the discomfort on my tail bone disappears -- I'll know it was the Fosamx.  3  osteoporosis and osteopenia Tired. Weakness in muscles of hands, fingers and arms. I had and have extreme hip pain, but I had that before I began Fosamax, I also had and have sore fingers and hands and knee pain. I am experiencing weakness in my arms, hands and fingers. Which may be from the medication. The pain I had prior to taking any meds. I had a hysterectomy at 35 and have been on HRT since. I am 57 and recently diagnosed with disease. F 57 74 days

3  osteopenia back/osteoporosis in hip none Initially did not want to try because of comments here. However, I went ahead and have had no problems. My hope is that when I get another bone scan after two years it will have helped enough that I can discontinue the drug for awhile. Therefore the 3 rating -- don't know the results yet or it would be higher. F 57 9 months
