FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

2  Osteopenia Extreme muscle pain; stiffness; foot and leg cramps. A constant tickle in my throat causing need to continually clear it. Felt terrible!!!!! I was on Fosamax for three weeks, and couldn't take it any more experiencing the horrible side effects I have listed. I have daily aches and pains as a result of mild arthritis and Polymyalgia Rheumatica. However, after taking this drug, I could barely get out of bed in the morning! I thought my other diagnoses were getting worse until I read others experiences on this site. My Dr.said to go off of it for three weeks, and that most women who go back on, the chances of repeat annoying side effects are lessened. I have been back on for a week, and so far, I haven't noticed anything horrible.........we'll give a few more weeks and then give a full update. I think that it's important to follow the instructions on how to take this very specifically. I wonder if I didn't drink enough water, and that's why my throat bothered me. So, as of now, my rating is a 2, but that may change. I'm glad for others' who haven't had any problems, and feel for those who have. F 49 3 days

1  Bone density scan I am a 49 y.o. athletic male who had been biking regularly until a bone density scan suggested I should take fosamax. Bad hip and knee pain started after a year on Fosamax. I can barely walk up stairs and have had to give up biking. I've stopped taking Fosamax and hope my mobility will return. M 49 1.5 years

1  Osteoporosis Within 2 days of taking a once per week dose of 70 mg I experienced aches and pains in my bones, weakness and cramping in my arms and hands. My bones and joints feel like they are 30 years older! I will not continue using this drug, I will self-treat with vitamins, diet, exercise and natural progesterone cream (ProGest) which has been shown to build healthy bone. F 49 5 days

1  osteopenia Lower back pain, leg pain, sciatica, a creaky feeling when get up from sitting; could not do regular exercise I had been doing for years--felt like I aged overnight; my balance was off; pain moved around a lot; burning pain down hamstrings; whole midsection was just off somehow; thumb joints ached It's been a year and half since I stopped taking, and I noticed a difference within a week or two, but I still experience achy thumbs and muscle and joint pain off and on for no apparent reason, and I believe it's due to Fosamax as I never had this before.  1  osteoporosis From the very first time I took Fosomax, my sciatica and joint pain worsened to the point where I couldn't sleep since almost any position hurt and could not get into or out of chairs, cars, bed, etc without help. This was especially bad for the 2-21/2 days after taking a weekly 35 dose. When I looked at the manufacturer's info or asked my Dr., the only answer I got was that muscle pain occured in 4.1% of perople taking it. My Dr. acted as though I must be exaggerating, but it has happened every time for about a year now. I am thinking of stopping this medication, but am really afraid to after seeing both grandmothers and my mother suffer much injury and pain due to osteoporosis. I had a hysterectomy at 40 and stopped hormone therapy when most others did after the HRT scare. F 49 1 years

1  prescribed This is a prescription for murder or suicide(if you read about it) I am so glad fosamax came with an information packet. I got the literature before swallowing. I opened the pill pack of fosamax and put it in with my vitamins to take the next morning, then I decided I should wait until the weekend in case it made me sick. The side effects list: do not lie down for 30 minutes, not to drive, not to be in the sun, may cause nausea, and constipation or diahrea. This would mean I would need to walk 32 miles to work, fully clothed in 105 degree temperatures with an umbrella, stop to vomit and or use the restroom and possibly loose my jaw bone? No Thanks, it didn't take long to realize that this pill will not be in my pill pack. When did doctors give up their oath to save lives and increase the quality of life? Is this the new way they are educated? I wonder who funds the education, and supplies the class rooms with text books? Could it be the pharmaceutical companies? Of course it is. Fosamax could probably be given in a larger dose as a means of e F 49 0 days

1  osteopaenia Abdo cramps, diarrhoea, flu like symptoms, lethargy, hangover feeling, dizziness, headache. All my symptoms occurred exactly 24 hours after taking the dose of Fosamax.Have taken only three doses and experienced all or most of these symptoms each time. Will not take any more and am now extremely concerned as have been prescribed Boniva and read the horrific reports about that drug. Think I will resort to just taking Calcichew with Vit D and doing plenty of weight bearing exercise. F 49 3 weeks

1  Osteoporosis nausea, diarrhea, flushing of face, pain in back, excruciating pain in the joints. After the first dose I experienced some nausea and mid week "flushing" of the face and neck. Also, mild leg pain. The second dose I had terrible pain in the chest and stomach. I had nausea, diarrhea, stomach pains. The next day I experienced terrible burning in my lower back as well as pain in my chest area. By mid week I could not get out of bed in the morning. I had terrible pain in all of my joints -- especially knees, ankles, fingers. I could barely walk to the bathroom and had to take 3 days off from work. My doctor prescribed Celebrex to help with the pain as well as a steroid which I did not take. The pain began to subside after the 5th day of the second dose. I was told to discontinue the pills and am scheduled to go back to the doctor to discuss other options. F 49 2 weeks

2  osteopenia due to hyperthyroid Muscle aches and joint pain especially in am and evening. Difficulty to get up after sitting...knees ache back/neck etc. Diarrhea, visual blurriness at times. Insomnia...specifically falling asleeep and waking up unable to get back to sleep. Anxiousness in evenings. It just occurred to me today that my problems are related to the Fosamax. The problems I was experiencing closely parallel the same sympotms I was experiencing when my thyroid levels were elevated. I first I thought my thyroid levels were out of whack again..but the blood levels returned fine. So, as I researched Fosamax....it appears that most of my probles very well could stem from the Fosamax. I am going to talk with my physician...but I am concerned about taking the drug...as well as not taking it. F 48 6 months

2  Osteopenia due to anti-oestrogens SEVERE ITCHING for a few days each time I took a once-a-week dose. Took one a week, realized that the severe itching was connected to the drug after I took it for the second time. Had to discontinue it. Could not keep scratching - especially as was studying for exams and having to sit exams. Am now taking Actonel once a week. No itching. F 48 2 weeks

1  Osteopenia Muscle and joint pain in arms, wrists, elbow, and shoulder. Very little strength in hands and arms (drop things). Back has been aching and left hip joint and muscle area are very sore. Quadracepts are sore. It seems that, in my arms, the closer the muscle is to my joint the worse it gets. Neck is cracking like I have never heard it crack before, even jaw has been cracking. I take 70mg every two weeks and have only taken three doses in six weeks. I have taken Synthroid, Advair, and Nasonex daily for a few years and have never experienced any side effects. I am sure that Fosamax is the culprit. I had none of these problems before taking this drug. I will be discontinuing it immediately and will seach for a natural treatment. It is not worth the overall weakness and pain I am experiencing. I am so glad to have found this website! F 48 6 weeks

1  osteopenia I was recently diagnosed with osteopenia and my doctor prescribed Fosamax for six months. I began taking fosamax six weeks ago. At first, I noticed the bloating, which is one of the side effects. Then, I noticed that I was gaining weight, while exercising and maintaining my same diet. In six weeks, I have gained 12 pounds. In the past two weeks, I have started experiencing abdominal pain and cramps, along with gas. The pain is non-stop. The abdominal pain is so bad that I have to take Aleve for the pain. I'm not going to take Fosamax anymore. I'm afraid of any additional side effects that may occur. I'll just continue to take calcium and 1000 mg D vitamins and continue exercising. F 48 6 weeks

1  Bone Loss Lots of pain in my feet, especially my toes, which started cramping up all the time and would wake me in the night. Also started feeling stiff, especially when sitting or riding in a car for awhile. The bottoms of my feet hurt a lot! Didn't relate it to the Fosamax until reading other comments. I am stopping the drug immediately! Doctors, please warn your patients to watch for the side affects of Fosamax!! F 48 3 months

1  osteoporosis metallic taste in mouth, painful teeth, headache, diarrhea, pain in chest, asthma-like breathing, shortness of breath, extreme fatigue, panic attacks, twitching muscles, low electrolytes (blood calcium) I had stopped taking this, but my insurance (BC/BS) sent a letter that I HAD to continue or see doctor. I couldn't get off work, so went back on meds. Symptoms only got worse. EXTREME FLU symptoms after first week. I had to have an (unrelated) colonoscopy at the end of the week. Combination of this and Osmoprep put me in the hospital for 2 days with low electrolytes and heart problems. (This is hind-sight. I didn't know they could cause this prob at the time.) I am a soccer referee who can hardly walk down the block now without getting winded and the pain in my teeth/taste are unbearable. Had x-rays done for possible pneumonia/pleurisy. I've been off for a week and symptoms persist! F 48 3 months
