FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  never started none; this website helped me decide I wouldn't touch Fosamax with a 10 foot pole, let alone put it into my body I picked up my first Fosamax prescription yesterday, and read the 3 pages of warnings attached, which made me wary enough to check the net. After checking through various websites, and reading of more problems than I ever knew existed, I'm not going to take Fosamax, and will return it to the store. I wonder about the "diagnosis" of borderline osteoporosis, since I'm 5 feet tall and weigh about 103 pounds, how could my hip bone (only problem area noted in Dexa scan) possibly be as dense and heavy as that of the comparative "standard" 25 year old? I think it's all hype. F 56 0 days

1  My mom's taking it. My mom's taken Fosamx since 1995. She also has RA. About a year ago she fainted, broke her shoulder and was diagnosed with A-fib. She has always complained about her heart feeling funny. Her age is 79. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis a week ago. All the choices were trotted out for me to pick from. I'm glad I found this website. My Dexa scores seem weird to me. Hip is normal, spine is low except for bottom section which is a -3.1 and that makes my total score a -2.5. I'm trying natural ways right now since I never took calcium before (upset my stomach) F 56

1  osteopenia Severe bloating of stomach, gas, constant constipation, stomach pains, diarrhea, weight gain, aching bones..knees hurt constantly, legs are stiff, when walking feel like a zombie or a woman of 100 years old, headache, both feet are always sore..burning. Neck aches, hands and fingers stiff. Tired all the time, no energy at all. Taking for almost 1 yr. Had stress fracture in 2nd metatarsal, had bone density test, which was low. Went to my GYNE this past week and complained about the weight gain (20lbs),stiffness of my joints, constipation and diarrhea. He dismissed my complaints, except for the stomach and said I could but you on Evista. I 'Googled" Evista and read all the horrible side effects. Googled Fosamax and found this site. God, what an eye opener..to learn that Merck is being sued for millions because of the effects of this drug. It's UNBELIEVABLE.Feel like a old woman, can hardly get out of bed d taking those first few steps, I can hardly walk..walk stiff legged. Bottoms of feet burn, constantly hurt and sore. My stomach is so bloated, I look like I'm 6 months pregnant, had to buy bigger pants to fit. When I kneel down, can hardly get up, my knees hurt so bad. My teeth and gums do hurt, but thankfully nothing is seriously wrong with them (at least so far). This website is terrific..I didn't refill F 56 10 months

1  osteopenia diagnosis Within 12-14 hrs of my first and only dose of Fosamax, I experienced debilitating hip pain and required assistence to walk. Within 36 hrs after the dose, I could only take shallow breaths because of severe pain in my sternum and thorasic spine. Other severe pain sites were my lower back and one hand. I have discovered too late that this drug causes the symptoms it is reported to prevent. F 56 1 days

1  osteoporosis Severe pain in shoulders and lower back.Extreme nausea, burning up,then freezing cold plus "internal shakes".Digestive problems including stomach cramps bloating and constipation.Finger joints swelled and had muscle pain all over my body. I felt so well when I went to the doctor. The diagnosis of osteoporosis was a shock but I trust my doctor and I willingly took the pill.24 hours later I felt as if I had aged 40 years.I had to take a week off work [schoolteacher],so I am used to "soldiering on" when feeling under the weather. My homoepath called it toxic when I phoned her but that was the day after I took the pill. Then thank the Lord I found this website. They went in the bin.  1  osteopenia No side effects while taking it until the 5th-6th year of taking it. I then experienced severe bone pain for the next 5.5 years, even after stopping usage at year 8. The pain went diagnosed until doctors found broken L 4-5 facet joint that needed surgery, broken wrist that was casted 4 times and then just placed in a soft split as it would not heal, and a broken rib. The L 4-5 did not fuse after 4 back-to-back surgeries due to the hardware pulling out of bone after 2-3 days after each consecutive surgery. Two and one half years later, still has not fused. Finally, specialists in Denver diagnosed it as Frozen Bone Syndrome, which they stated was more than likely caused by taking Fosamax for more than 2 years. Specialty docs state that they are seeing more and more Fosamax patients with this bone disorder all the time. I still have severe pain in the lower back and hip areas. My bones are still not rejuvenating and after 2 bone biopsies, prognosis is not good. My condition is now cons I have endured extreme chronic bone pain due to taking Fosamax and I am still living through the bone non-rejuvenation nightmare. I would like to warn anyone taking the Fosamax for 2 years or more...to STOP, Take A Holiday From It!! My past 5.5 years have been a living hell. I think they need to take this drug off the market!  1  Because a stupid doctor recommended If you want to die just eat rat killer but don't you dare take this pill. It will destroy your and your family members whole life. You will end up in ER. No doctor or med can reverse the horrible side effects of fosamax. Months after months you will suffer and your family members will have to watch you suffer. It is like skinning a person alive with no anesthesia. If I could I would have sueded the people invented this medicine. Seriously what is FDA thinking???? Wake up people!! F 56 2 weeks

1  Osteopenia First week experienced severe pain and swelling on top of left foot. Thought it was from shoes. Pain subsided after 10 days. Began having constipation and had to take laxative. Never had this problem before. Third week developed severe pain and swelling in left hand. Arthritis is in my family, so thought I might be developing that. Still having constipation issues. Something made me put these pieces together and when I checked the possible side effects on the insert for the Fosamax wasn't too surprised to see both constipation and bone/joint pain listed. I took my fifth dose of this on 4/9. Since then I have started having similar intense pain on top of left shoulder bone. This is such crazy intense pain. I'm hoping it will go away and leave no lingering effects. I highly recommend not starting thus drug. Check out natural alternatives. F 56 5 weeks

1  osteopenia I began Fosomax a year ago. I immediately developed severe hip joint pain. Went through physical therapy because my doctor didn't think it was a side effect. However, I did quit taking it. After several months, my hip joint pains diminished and I went back on Fosomax. Almost immediately I developed such bad back, neck, shoulder pain in my joints and muscles. I think that the joint pain starts and then inflames the muscles, which takes months to heal. I quit taking Fosomax and will never go back on it. I took it in two segments, trying to heal my body in between. F 56 8 weeks

1  Osteopenia I took my first dose last Sunday. I was fine all day, went to bed, and then I WOKE UP. From the bottom of my throat to the tops of my thighs, I felt like like someone beat the crap out of me...like a bad case of lactic acid all over the core of my body (bones and muscles). I couldn't go to work for two days...that is how long it took for the drug to get through my system. I almost died when I read that someone else had that reaction. I WILL NOT TAKE THIS DRUG. I too am taking 1500mg of caclum and 5000mg of D3. This drug should be taken off the market. Look at the reactions - can you imagine what it does to a person long term? F 56 1 days

5  mild to moderate bone loss None, unless I forget and eat something in the half-hour after I take it. When I had my first bone scan at age 48, my bones were fine. At 50, I had mild to moderate bone loss in both hips. Started Fosamax. At 53, I had very mild bone loss in one hip. I am still taking it and plan to take it forever--my mother and both grandmothers had terrible osteoporosis, both grandmothers broke hips. I ride horses and have no desire to see my bones shatter. I think it's a great drug for people who can tolerate it. I don't know where I'd be today without it. F 55 5 years

4  Osteopenia After bone density test at age 51 indicated osteopenia, my GYN prescribed weekly Foxamax, After 2 years, my bone density improved. I did not experience any negative side effects until recently, I have had severe itching around waist, back, elbows and back of knees. I don't know if this is related to Fosamax. I hadn't been aware of this site but after reading so many negative side effects, I am stopping Fosamax. I will continue Calcium, Vitamin D, Fish Oil and exercise. F 55 5 years
