FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  osteoporosis I took alendronate sodium 70 mg which is a generic form of Fosamax, starting on 2/6/11 following all instructions and I took it again the following Sunday for a total of 2 doses. A couple of days after the second dose i developed a tightness in my throat and in addition to that I have had an uncomfortable feeling in my chest that at times feels like i have overeaten. Now almost 6 weeks later I still have the symptoms but in the past week I have had days when I have had better moments, today is not one of them. I'm convinced that this is a reaction from the drug. I didn't read the side effects of this drug before I got these symptoms, so I had nothing telling me you might have this or that reaction. The only thing I ever heard about Fosamax was about jaw issues. I wonder how long this drug can stay in your system. F 53 2 weeks

1  osteoperosis my 4th metatarsal snapped while I was walking, and after 12 weeks in a cast it still is not healing. I finally had an Endocrinologist suggest that I stop taking Fosamax, so I looked it up on the internet and was floored about all the side effects! My GP just stuck me on it and I just took it without question....well, I will be much more aware of what medications I take from now on. My Father died of Esophageal Cancer, and had been on Fosamax for years. I wonder now if it had caused his early death. He stopped taking it when he was having difficulty swallowing. He fought the cancer bravely for 1 1/2 years before his death. M 53 16 months

1  for osteosporosis severe pain in ankles, feet ,knees, hips, shoulder, ribs and back, shortness of breathe, swelling of the feet, ankles knees and legs, headache I have been on fosamax for about 6 months now and I am now literally incapacitated. I was given fosamax with the understanding that it was to regenerate bone loss but it has done the opposite! I have been complaining about the horrible pain that I am having for months and was sent to see a rhumetologist suggesting that I now have osteoarthritis and rheumitoid arthritis. I have been told to take pain meds because know one understands why I am in so much pain. My hips are now hurting so bad I can't even climb a step. I have fallen a few times when my leg has collapsed. I was even being evaluated by a kidney doctor to see if the pain in my side and hip area are due to kidney damage. my wife happened to do some research on the internet and discovered how many other people are suffering from the same symptoms as I do from using fosmax. And has also discovered fosamax lawsuits, because of an FDA warning in 2008 that fosamax had been linked to extreme and incapacitating joint, mucle and bone pain. I am hoping now that I will no longer take fosamax that my pain subsides. I have read others complaints about fosmax claiming that they are still in pain months later after stopping the drug. This drug should be taken off the market especially if doctors are unaware of the side effects. Doctors who prescribe fosamax should be well informed of the side effects, in the event patients like myself and many others complain of certain symptoms after using fosamax. M 53 6 months

1  Diagnosed with osteoporosis I was diagnosed with significant bone loss 13 years ago at the age of 40.My blood calcium levels were low, the doctor was concerned so I had a DEXA. This drug had only been on the market for a few years. I took the drug one day almost 13 years ago and said no way am I continuing. Doing some research, I found out it should not be taken before menopause. The doctors thought my case was so unusual and it was taken to a panel of endocrinologists. Of course, these drugs were the answer. Now, after the 20 years of these drugs being on the market,we are finding out the side effects are terrible. They prevent the normal breaking down and building of the bone. Ultimately they make your bones very brittle and unhealthy. I eat well, take lots of Vitamin D, a multi and get exercise.DO YOUR RESEARCH, THERE IS SO MUCH INFO OUT THERE. F 53 1 days

1  Osteoporosis I am a very active 53 yr old, who developed severe back and hip pain, making it difficult to stand for long periods of time, difficult to workout, developing sudden weight gain, a pound a week, stomach became very bloated, gassy, constipated and very fatigued. I went from feeling and working out like I was in my mid-30s to feeling like I was 95 and my bones felt brittle I have been off the for one week, and still have the symptoms but on a milder level now.  4  severe ostopenia My neck is a little stiff but am not sure if it is pillow related or fosamax related I am still in shock that I have a bone issue since I have no risk factors for it. The only thing I noticed during menapause is that I have never felt so badly for so long and would say to my husband that I feel like I am disolving. Trying to be healthy I did not take any HRT...just toughed it out. I guess I was disolving . After only 1 month on Fosamax and removing coffee and soda from my diet, and taking ALL my vitamins I can say that for the first time in years I feel better. How can that be after such a short time? I dont know , but I hope that a positive attitude helps in the cure. It is so confusing to know what to do after reading all the bad side affects and risks from the drug. I just want to have grandchildren someday and be able to lift them and play without an injury or pain. I wonder what the percentage of people on fosamax have rebuilt bone is?? F 52 1 months

4  osteopenia I currently take 35 mg. once a week. I have not had any side effects. Bone density scans show that I am still in the osteopenia stage after 4 years of fosamax. I may need to increase dosage to 70 mg. once a week if my next scan doesn't show improvement. F 52 4 years

4  Osteoporosis from cancer drugs I have not had anything that I could put down to side effects. I have been prescribed this drug to help the restoring of my bones. Osteoporosis due to cancer drugs. In a year I will be able to see if this drug has done its job through a bone density scan. At the moment my bones are like a 70yr old. F 52 4 months

3  osteoperosis mild nausea, wake up with low grade headache, hip pain after sitting, elbow pain in both arms which I was told was tennis elbow, lower back pain after sitting or laying on my stomach. Only pain I had before fosomax was right hip pain. Have had trouble recently getting a good optical prescription--thought it was just eyes getting older and maybe it is---but I wonder... eye doctor said that I may be developing cataracts but I'm only 52. The nausea started when I was bumped up to 70 mil once a week since 35 ml for 2 years had helped my hips but not my spine. F 52 2 years

2  osteopenia At this time I can't put a rating on Fosamax.(well, I can't submit my comment w/o a rating, so my rating at this time is a false one [I think!]. I went to the dentist the other day, on my way home it was like a light bulb went on or should I say, 'a spot light'! Having some problems with calcium build up in my gums. They protrude out the sides of the gums (inner & outer), & get quite sore (ugly looking, too.) They have a name, but not sure of it. Anyway, on the ride home I thought of Fosamax & wondered if maybe there was a connection, so I researched the drug. Wow!! Do I feel stupid. I didn't come across any info about my gum issue, but was in tears reading about others taking this drug. I've have increasing pain, stiffness, joint issues, bottom of feet pain, ringing in ears, positional virtigo, tiredness, just down right feeling like my body is failing me. I blam it all on menopause. Doc says arthritis. (I think that's just the Doc's opinion). Never considered the d Checked w/my Doc., says it's ok to not use Fosamax & keep track of things. Bone scan to follow in a few months. I will continue w/calcium citrate & add stretching w/ lite weights. Interesting site on the subject is womentowomen.com HOPE F 52 6 years

2  Osteoporosis First experienced unexplained pain in ankles. A few days later they swelled and it hurt to walk or sit. Doc switched to Actenol (sp?) but I won't start it until next week because I want this to go away. I have no problem with exercise. Why do doctors always prescribe meds if a little vita D and calcium + exercise will fix it? F 52 7 weeks

2  Osteoporosis Gastro problems. After three days I started getting a lot of gas, was burping constantly, and became constipated. By Day 5 I started to get heartburn. So I stopped. I am glad that I followed my intuition and stopped taking Fosamax. The side effects are just not worth the discomfort and possible harm. I truly felt that I would be doing harm to my body if I kept taking it. F 52 1 weeks

2  osteopenia The first night called my doctor with extreme muscle stiffness. Thought I was having a heart attack. He suggested it was low calcium in my tissues and the fosamx was pushing whatever calcium I had into my bones. 2 months later still having joint pain, especially bottoms of my feet and the knuckles of my right pinkie fingers. He said to keep taking it. I'm observing one more week and checking out other possibilities. My mother takes 10 mg a day instead of 70 mg a week and has taken it for more than ten years without complaint. F 52 2.5 months

2  osteopenia Sensation of pill caught in my throat, heartburn. After 2 years of bone density scans that concerned my doc, she put me on Fosamax. I took the first dose, strictly according to instruction and had diarrea same day that I chalked up to something I ate. The next week I took a second dose and 6 weeks later I still have symptoms; the (very annoying) feeling of a pill caught in my throat, intermittent heartburn which I've never had before, some stomach upset after a spicy meal. All this after only 2 Fosamax! Saw my doc and she diagnosed esophogitis. I'm now off alcohol, spicy food, carbonated drinks - no fun! Both my internist and obg-gyn still want to put me on something for bones - maybe the nasal spray, but in the meantime I sure hope this throat thing clears up. The next step an endoscopy - aaaaahhhh. I've never had an GI symptoms before so I attribute all this to the Fosamax. F 52 2 days

2  Osteopenia Severe Bloating, Constipation, Gas. Achy & Tired. Thought it might be perimenopause symptoms. Never attributed to Fosomax until I read this site. Symptoms all started shortly after starting Fosomax. What happens if I discontinue? I now take 1500 mg calcium daily & eat daily yogurt, have also incorporated calcium rich foods to regular diet - all new habits learned from the 6 week Bone Density Book. Have not had another Density test, family history of severe osteoporis, my baseline was -2.1 - not sure if I'm getting better or worse. Haven't reached menopause yet. F 52 16 months

1  Osteopenia I have been on Fosamax for about 10 years. I have been having left shoulder pain, so bad I can not get dressed. Can not sleep well at night for hurting so bad, can not turn over in bed. Hurting for about 3 months now, went to the ortho doctor said it was bursitis and gave me a cortisone inj, but it didn't get any better, so I started taking an antibiotic and skipped taking my Fosamax for that week and it seemed to get alittle better, but I taken my Fosamax this morning and now my upper arm and shoulder is aching again and the movement is once again limited. I wanted to google Fosamax to see if anyone else was having the same problems, and low and behold I am very suprised at the people that are having the same symptoms. Also about 2 years ago my right thumb started dislocating and is very stiff. I am very limited on using it and now my left arm. The doctor has done xrays on both my shoulder and thumb and said the bones looked fine and he was very puzzled about my thumb, he just said h I am a nurse and right handed at that. I can not use my right thumb nor my left arm. It has effected my job. No more Fosamax for me...... F 52 10 years
