FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  osteoporosis I already have a lot of pain from severe spinal problems--can't take any more pain. I began using strontium 10 months ago and my recent Dexa scan showed a modest increase in bone density (left hip made the most gain and is now osteopenia instead of osteoporosis). I'll continue with the strontium for sure! Look it up on Amazon---I take Doctor's Best brand. F 58 1 days

1  osteoporosis Took generic of fossamax. Immediately experienced flu like symptoms of muscle and joint pain and difficulty standing for over 10 minutes.I felt like I'd been in a car accident. Also eye pain and inflammation which required a trip to eye doctor the first week. Eye meds did not help and eye inflammation got worse with successive doses. Did not take last dose, but pain in hips, lower back, neck, buttocks linger after 10 days since last dose. Also a few chest pains. Eyes are feeling better now that I'm off it. I read that some people develop serious eye inflammation within the first 90 days of use. That was me. F 58 3 weeks

1  bone loss Took the first tablet (weekly Fosamax) Tues. morning. I took it with a large glass of water and nothing to eat for over half an hour. Made sure I sat up or got up and moved around in that half hour. I did not seem to have any bad effects but by Wed. evening I started to feel very tired and have a headache. It came and went so I knew it was not a migraine that I will sometimes have. They come the same way but always stay for 2 days. Thursday the tiredness and occasional headache continued and by the afternoon the heartburn started. I had to take something for that to feel a little better. This is the first time in my entire life I have experienced heartburn. It continued through the night and I still have it today (Friday). I also have a pain in my back and muscle cramps in my upper right arm. I am not going to take any more Fosamax, especially after reading everyone else's comments. I am a very energetic person but had to cancel today's activities due to how I am feeling. Before I reti F 58 1 days

1  osteopenia Severe joint and muscle pain in hands, feet, neck, back and shoulders. Stopped after taking three weekly doses and will NOT take any more. Reported symptoms to Doctor and she agree that I should stop. I will use natural healing - exercise, calcium, vitamin D, etc.! The Fosamax is horrible. Don't take it. F 58 3 weeks

1  osteoporosis Joint pains and severe swelling in my hands. BEWARE of this drug if you are taking anti-inflammatory drugs. I have chronic tendinitis in my hands and wrists. Anti-inflamatory drugs normally do a fair job of keeping the swelling under control. Swelling causes severe pain and stiffness in my fingers and wrist joints. Two weeks after starting the Fosamax I noticed more swelling and pain than normal for my condition. Not linking the swelling to the Fosamax drug, I continued taking it. After three months I could not use my hands to even dress myself without crying from the pain. My Doctor said it couldn't have any connection and to keep taking the Fosamax. I decided to stop taking it and now after two weeks the swelling is responding to my anti-inflammatory drug again. F 58 3 months

1  osteoporosis preventative I started taking Fosamax 70mg once weekly in Nov 2002. After about a month I began to have pain and weakness in my fingers, hands and wrists, particularly early morning and after periods of inactivity. My chosen day to take Fosamax was Sunday, initially the problem was on the Sunday, the more I took the further into each week the problem lasted until it was continuous and my hands became very weak. The problem presented itself like fluid around my joints, shaking my hands and holding my arms above my head helped, I was convinced that I had some dibilitating disease. I stopped taking the drug after about four months and immediately the problem stopped worsening.I had many tests, blood and nerve conduction tests included. The results were all negative. My consultant asked me to keep a food diary and from this I am convinced that the problem is linked to the amount of fruit, fruit drinks wine etc that I consume, particularly tomatoes and citrus fruits. I have contacted the manufacturers to ask them to conduct an investigation into a link with Fosamax and Fruit acids but they are not interested. I still have the problem but I can now control it by reducing the amount of fruit and fruit acids in my diet.No one can tell me how long this drug will be in my system and therefore how long I will have to suffer this unrecognised side effect of Fosamax.  1  Osteopenia, Osteoporosis I have been having difficulty getting up from a sitting position and also getting out of cars. Both of my legs hurt but the right one is really bad. My upper legs seem very weak. All of this started approximately Dec. 2003 and last week an orthopedic surgeon suggested I stop taking Fosamax to see if it makes any difference. I started taking it in Nov. 2003 so it does seem that it might be the cause of all of my pain. I am wondering how long it takes to get the stuff out of my system. It sure would be nice to go back to how I felt before I started taking it. I feel like I've aged 100 years in 9 months. F 58 9 months

1  osteopenia I have hand and foot osteoarthritis. The first time taking 70mg debilitated me like an old woman - pain to walk or move for a day. Weeks following I experienced a variety of muscle pain and weakness especially wrists, forearms (pain and dropping things). After 3 months I started to have major cramping in larger muscles in my thighs. Right from the beginning I attributed these symptoms to side effects of fosamax. Final blow was unrelenting bone pain in the chest and rib area, close to site of radiation therapy 5 years ago for breast cancer. This happened the day after taking the fosamax. I quit taking the drug. I kept questioning my doctors and a physiotherapist about the pain I was experiencing. All of these professionals looked up the side effects and nowhere was this stated to be a common side effect of fosamax YET MOST PEOPLE IN THIS RATINGS SITE ARE REPORTING SIMILAR SYMPTOMS !! The drug company must be more accountable. F 58 4 months

1  "diagnosed" with osteopenia Severe muscle pain and rigidity; increase in joint pain in knees and feet; inability to stand or walk for more than 15 minutes. Doctor did not believe me when I reported problems. I went off the drug on my own and 4 months later am almost completely asymptomatic. F 58 2 years

1  osteoporosis prevention At first I had pain in my left shoulder that decreased the range of motion by about half. Next it was lower and middle spine pain, pain across both shoulders and neck, and very strangely my forearms and wrists. I have been doing yoga daily for the past year and a half with weight bearing exercise a couple of times a week, and couldn't believe I felt so awful all of a sudden. But I realized it wasn't the exercise -- it had to be the Fosamax. Finding this site and one at gotbones.com really confirmed for me that this was the case. In reading the comments here, I am really angered by the ignorance of the medical profession and the greed of the drug companies to keep this horrible drug on the market so that more men and women can suffer needlessly. The fact that it has a half life of 10 years or more, meaning it is in your body virtually forever, makes me even angrier. Even worse, they now want to recommend treating younger and younger groups of people (spelled more PROFITS) with bisphosphonates. F 58 9 weeks

1  Fosamax I started taking Fosamx 70 mg 20 months ago after I had a terrible reaction to BONIVA. I have to say I felt I was doing alright with taking it once a week - although on the day I would take it I would have bad stomach aches, sometimes with diareaha and just a bloated feeling all day long. In October of this past year 15 months after first taking FOSAMAX I thought I was having a heart attack and went to my local hospital where they monitored me and referrred me to a Cardiologist. I was given cardiograms/eco-cardiograms, a nuclear stress test and even an Angiogram only to find that I had a HEALTHY HEART and was discharged. A short time later pains I had in my legs/groin got progressively worse and my gynocologist recommened a sonogram and my family doctor followed up with a ct scan only to find that there was nothing wrong .... having these two medical incidents made me realize -- WHAT could be wrong?? and the only thing I could think of was reading up on the one medication I take re I think that more people have to get the word out that this medication is doing more harm than good to many people. Doctors have to know what it is doing to people and more important the FDA needs to monitor these medications because people are taking them thinking they are doing a good thing but in the long run they can be causing more harm. I am going to take my chances and take NOTHING before I put anymore of these meds into my body. F 58 20 months

1  osteoporosis pain and stiffness-folks, look up Boniva comments on this site and you will see one by a female general practitioner - if doctors took these meds, like she did, they would know - Osteoporosis prevention Crippling flank and calf pain within three hours of the first dose. I was barely able to walk to my car and into my home when I arrived there. I spent most of the next two days in bed. The pain has decreased but is still present six days later. I am a board-certified family practice physician. When I was down, in terrible pain and unable to walk, I called GSK's hot line, asking what to do. The person answering had no useful information. Two days later I contacted the local GSK sales representative to find out what the company is doing for doctors whose patients experience crippling side effects. GSK tells a patient to contact her doctor, but doctors don't know what to do. I am dissatisfied with the responses (and nonresponses) GSK has offered as to what doctors are supposed to do when F 58 3 years

1  osteoporosis Taking it since April 2006. Gradually joints and muscles ache to the extent that I can just about function. This from a regular gym user who was very fit. I believe it is a dangerous drug and that because many people dont get immediate symptoms they do not make the association and believe that because of their age it must be arthritis. My advise is pay more heed to the side effects mentioned. F 58 9 months

1  Doctor prescribed I took 1 fosamax pill as directed; did not lay down, etc. The next morning I awoke to sever pain in my back and hips and could barely walk. Sever constipation also developed. The stomach pains; was presribed nexium - no help. My doctor said he thought I had an allergic reaction to the fosamax. I have not taken another pill and will not do so. I will seek alternative help if needed. I was feeling fine with no pain before taking the 1 pill. I am hoping it does no permanent damage. I have went on a low fat diet and exercise program (self) and will see how this works for me. Now I have pain in my neck and joints. None of this was present prior to taking fosamax. I would not recommend this pill for anyone. I have had to go to physical therapy for relief and am still disgusted at the effects of this when prior to taking Fosamax I had none of these issues.  1  Osteoporosis Terrible lower back pain, bloating, no energy. In other words, feeling extremely ill. I was feeling great, walking 2 miles a day, full of energy until I started taking Fosamax 3 weeks ago. Like one lady wrote here, I feel like an old woman. My lower back hurts so bad I can't stand up straight. My stomach is very bloated. I've gained several pounds without any change in diet. F 58 3 weeks

1  Osteopenia After taking two doses of once a week Fosamax (70mg), I started having severe joint pain in my neck and shoulders, kness, thumbs, toes, and bottoms of my feet. I felt horrible! I felt much better before taking Fosamax which was the only drug I ever took. I will be taking a more natural approach in the future and told my doctor that I'm quitting Fosamax! I thought I was doing the right thing but when the symptoms appeared, I did some research and found out more about the drug. Get yourself educated about your health and listen to your body!
