FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Osteopenia One week after starting weekly 70mg, I had chills, nausea, and low back pain. A month later, for a week, my left ankle area became numb, swollen, and weak. Then other weird symptoms descended: painful foot bottoms, especially in evening and when getting up from sitting position. Hand numbness upon waking, and once for 5 minutes in middle of day. Burning & stinging sensations, pins & needles, and "pinging" aches in random places ALL OVER my body, especially feet & hands--ongoing but noncontinuous. Several episodes of all-night, frequent, strong urination, accompanied by sweating & fire/ice skin: Please e-mail me if you have had this, as I have only spotted "bladder problems" on this site. With astonishment and relief I have read every entry on this site, and wish everyone well. After 20 doses, I am stopping this drug immediately. These symptoms puzzled both my naturopath and MD (who ordered an MRI). I am a healthy 57-year-old who suddenly felt like I was aging on warp speed. Diabetes? Aneurysm? Lyme disease? I am so angry. This has been a scary education. F 57 4 months

1  Prevention of osteoporosis Jaw feeling very stiff & aching with ulcerated tongue & mouth resulting in an excision & biopsy of lesions in jaw and diagnosed as Lichenoid Stomatitis which the drug is believed to be responsible, severe cramp throughout the evening and night in both calves & feet, ringing ears, both big toe nails dropped off, constant feeling of tooth ache but teeth okay, index fingers in both hands having unusual shooting pains and arthritic joints in other fingers feeling much worse, constant fatigue. I stopped taking Alendronic Acid (Fosamax) immediately on the advice of my consultant oral surgeon who I was referred to after experiencing dreadful problems in my mouth and jaw. The consultant was appalled that I had been prescribed Alendronic Acid by my G.P. I had been flagged by the National Health as someone who may suffer from osteoporosis sometime in the future and my G.P. called me to see him where he then prescribed the drug without offering me a bone density scan. My G.P. later admitted to me that the drug would have been a contributory factor to my current serious health issues which have left me in a far worse state of health than ever before I started taking the drug.  1  osteoporosis thanks to those who recommended strontium I urge everyone to research strontium for building bone density. I just ordered some on Amazon and you can read reviews there--it sold me. My doctor just prescribed Fosamax for me. Before taking even one dose I read user reviews and became too scared to take even once. Strontium has been researched and is used in Europe. Not only does it help with osteoarthritis, but it also builds bone density--with little to no side effects for just about everyone. Hope the dr. isn't too upset--if he is I'll need to switch drs.  1  osteoporosis within an hour of taking my first weekly dose, I experienced severe abdominal pain, heartburn, & bloating. I'd been warned that this might occur, so I girded my loins (well, took a Pepcid) & hoped for the best. By that evening, I'd developed what felt like the flu: aching all over, feeling feverish. My heart was racing, & I felt general anxiety; couldn't sleep at all. By morning, I was exhausted, my vision was cockeyed, & my joints were so painful & stiff that I nearly toppled as I got out of bed. By that afternoon, the "flu" had mutated into instant pseudo-rheumatoid arthritis. I am in my late 50s, very active, & accustomed to working through the usual aches & pains of middle age. This is different. As others here have said, I feel 100 years old. My osteoporosis is severe enough to concern me greatly, but becoming non-ambulatory & paranoid is scarcely an improvement.  1  osteopenia/osteoporosis Ten months into taking Fosamax I started having stomach pain. The pain eventually drove me into the OR at a local hospital. The attending doctor suggested that I was having an attack of gastritis...I was then put on Prevacid (which I later found out inhibits the absorption of calcium...wow) to reduce the acid in my stomach. However, my stomach pain never quite went away...so I went online to find more info on Fosamax. My research lead me to many sites regarding the terrible side effects of this drug, including digestive problems associated with it. I decided that enough is enough, and I took myself off of Fosamax, after all I know my body better than anyone else. I will continue to take calcium tablets with vitamin D twice daily, drink and eat calcium rich foods, as well as, do weight bearing exercises 3 to 4 times a week. After all I have lived 57+ years and I have never had a broken bone, I'll take my chances with the rest of my life without Fosamax. It has been four months since I s There are many many lawsuits and pending lawsuits against the manufacturers of Fosamax for the harm it has done to so many people. The website, womantowoman.com has been very helpful toward my understanding of the conditions Osteopenia and Osteoporosis. F 57 11 months

1  Osteoporosis I already had acid reflux and some pain in my hips and knees. After the first dose of Fosamax, the pain got worse and progressed from there. The reflux got worse too, but the bone and joint pain are what I really couldn't stand. My doctor seemed very surprised when I told her my leg bones, hips and knees hurt so bad I couldn't sleep and had started limping around. I stopped taking it after 10 weeks and have been off it for three. My left side has improved immensely, but my right side (leg bone, hip and knee) still hurt terribly. I still limp from the pain and it still wakes me in the night. I will not go back on this medication. I read about gentle vibration as a treatment for osteoporosis and I want to find out more about that. F 57 10 weeks

1  Osteoperosis diarrhea and stomach problems I took Fosamax and it's generic for a period of ten years. I have had stomach problems on and off for many of those years. I stopped taking after discussing it with my oral surgeon 4 and a half months ago. I never thought it was causing my stomach problems, but they are starting to subside now. I don't think I will ever take it again. I will cope with post menopausal issues with vitamins for now on. F 57 10 years

1  osteopenea low DEXA score Extreme joint/muscle pain increased over past 3 years. Violent leg/foot cramps. Neck, lower back, hip mobility rapidly became more impaired. Knees/hands stiff and sore with swelling. Difficulty walking after 20 minutes of sitting. Knees 'crack'. Extreme fatigue & loss of sleep from fighting the pain. Thought I had arthritis but now wonder. Exercise daily to increase mobility and alleviate pain and stiffness and walk at least 3 times/week which helps temporarily but is becoming uncomfortable. I have trouble sleeping, waking in pain & so stiff I can barely get out of bed. Vision seems to blur. I have no other ailments & have always been very healthy. I am of slight built and Nordic heritage. Total hysterectomy at 45, took Premarin 8 yrs 'til mother had estrogen-receptive breast cancer. I stopped taking it. Doc put me on Evista-after 1 month of severe hot flashes, stopped taking it. Prefer to be drug-free, including ibuprofin (I now take round the clock just to keep moving) Chiropractor can't help anymore and can't believe the amount of pain I'm in. I went online to see if I could find out why I felt so much pain and ironically as I was drinking my glass of water after taking my LAST Fosamax I ran across this website. I was looking for contra-indications of the only drug I am taking. First I found the jaw bone issue and looked further. I thought the esophagus issue was the only major side effect. I was shocked but also heartened to finally find some possible answer to why I feel this way. I will stop the drug to see if I feel better over time. Tell your friends on Fosamax to find a safer way to deal with bone loss through vitamin/mineral therapy. Prescription drugs are for people who are sick, not to make you sick! F 57 3 years

1  osteperosis I took the once weekly form of Fosamax and now feel like something is stuck in my throat. I was on Actonel-with no problems, however, osteopenia did not improve. Doctor has switched me back to Actonel. Feeling in throat is still there after 2 weeks of being off of drug. Was wondering if someone else has had this and does it go away. F 57 2 weeks

1  osteoporosis, 2breaks in 4 months Horrible!Within one hour stomach pain, trouble breathing, pain with swallowing. I had constant thirst. By 3 hours I started to bloat and had gas and burping that almost was comical if it wasn't so painful and awful. By that night the heartburn was almost unbearable. I was vomiting and within 24 hours I had blisters on my lips, gums, and tongue which broke into ulcers in another 24 hours.I keep rinsing and gargleingwith baking soda and warm water, but I am not sure how much this has helped. I had such heartburn I could not stand it and nothing I tried would make it stop for 4 days. The 3rd day I got a migraine headach and I have had a headache for the last 10 days(but not a migraine). I will NEVER take this again and though I hear it helps other people I took only one 70mg once a week pill and today is the 14th day of torture. I can't lie down, I can barely keep any food down and I can't stop this horrible barking cough. It feels like there is a lump under my vocal chords and I have not had any voice for 13 days. I sure hope this gets out of my system soon. When I called my doctor she just said stop taking it and I will see you in 3 weeks. I was absolutely fine the day I took it. F 57 1 days

1  Osteopenia Blurry vision about one year later. I stopped taking Fosomax about two months ago, and my vision is back to normal. I thought the blurriness was caused by my mascara, or eye cream that I ocassionlly put on my upper lids, or getting older (I'm 57), until my sister told me that one of the side effects of Fosomax is blurry vision. I will NEVER NEVER NEVER take Fosomax or its generic or any other drugs again, since I can honestly say that I am a healthy person aside from the osteopenia. My doctor told me that it and osteoporosis cannot be reversed, but I will prove him wrong. Although juicing takes effort especially with greens, it will be my armor from now on. F 57 1.5 years

1  osteopenia Severe right hip pain which radiates to the thigh. Xray of the joint shows a normal result. Pain causes me to limp. Pain keeps me up at night. Why are we being perscribed this medicine to improve our bones when there are other means to do this? F 57 2 years

1  early stages of osteoporosis After the 2nd pill (one per week) my left knee swelled three times its normal size. Had to see a specialist who drained 2.5 vials of fluid out of it. I also experienced painful swelling of my pink finger. Done with Fosamax! Will never take again! I took the generic version. F 57 2 weeks

1  osteopenia & osteoporosis I had no aches or pains when I started this drug. After 15 months I feel 87 instead of 57. A year after stopping, I am still stiff and achy, especially in my left elbow which I never injured or had problems with. Don't start this drug. This drug should be removed from the market or have a black box warning. I was a vibrant, active 55 year old woman when I started it. After about 2 weeks, I started to have pain in my left arm and elbow. The doctor said it wasn't the Fosamax. I continued for 15 months. I started to have a lot of stiffness and achiness, especially at night. Did anyone else find that the adverse effects were worse at night? I have been off Fosamax for about a year and still feel like I aged 30 years in 15 months. F 57 15 months
