FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Osteoporosis Took 70mg dose yesterday and today had some of the worst neck, shoulder and upper back pain I've ever experienced. I also had upset stomach and tightness in chest. I emailed my MD, who said to take one more dose next week and if problems continue, stop taking it. I've used this site for other medication questions and couldn't believe how many respondents had similar pain. I'll start to look at alternatives to Bisphonates. Having stronger bones won't be of much use if I'm miserable. F 52 1 days

1  osteopedia dizziness; lethargy; confusion; weakness in hands; bump on nerve in left hand that when touched my fingers tingle and go numb; nerve problem in left big toe all after 3 months on Fosamax; and constipation. I complained to my orthopedist about my symptoms, told her I took myself off Fosamax and her reply was, "I never had a patient have these problems or heard of such side effects. You really need to be on it." Obviously she was sold a bill of goods, hasn't even read the drug company's material and she owes me a 30 dollar copay. In addition she has no idea what my bump is in my hand. I'm crossing her and this drug off my list. F 52 3 months

1  Osteopenia After the first dose, I had pretty severe anxiety which is not a typical thing for me. Then in the second and third week, I had back pain and pain under my left breast in the rib cage area. Also in the third week, I had burning stomach pain in the middle of my stomach. That's when I called my doctor and decided to stop taking it. The Dr. was adamant it wasn't the Fosamax, but I am sure it is. This drug is basically poison in your body. It was originally used in industrial products. I will take my Vitamin D and Calcium, but no more of this poison. I felt pressure from my Dr. I will also never get the Prolia or Reclast shot/infusion. A woman with whom I work was bedridden in pain for months after the Reclast, and couldn't lift her arms for three weeks. Bad Drugs. M 52 3 weeks

1  Spinal bone deterioration I am a breast cancer patient who already struggles w/ chronic pain from the treatment required for my cancer. After 2 doses of Fosamax, my joint pain has worsened significantly, and I have swelling in my torso. I've decided to stop taking it. My pain includes pain in the wrists, knees and ankles. It has been interfering with my sleep and my mobility. I'm also experiencing discomfort in my throat at the very back of my mouth and when I lay down I experience a dry, hacking cough. These symptoms have been worse the first 2-3 days after I took the pill. My Mom has taken Fosamax for years. I'm thinking that her chronic shoulder pain might be related to this medication.  1  osteoporosis I have been on this medication for just nine weeks and didn't realize that all these side effects were all connected. I just never thought that they were from the fosamax. I have severe pain on the bottom on my feet when getting out of bed in the morning, eye twitching and tremors, dry eyes, runny nose, toe joint pain and wrist pain. This medication has many side effects. I did not realize that all these strange new changes were from the medication, I just thought it was just part of being 52. I am very active and never had these problems. These side effects happened over a few weeks and I just didn't put it together. I am stopping this medication today. I am so happy I found this sight. My doctor should have spoken to me about the possible side effects and I should have done my homework. F 52 12 weeks

1  Bone density scan showed bone loss Severe, chronic pain in forearms; couldn't straighten up after sitting a short time; pain across shoulders and upper chest. Did not equate intense muscle? tendon? bone? pain in both forearms to Fosamax usage until I found this website. About 2 wks after stopping Fosamax the intense pain (could hardly move my arms, especially at night) peaked and subsided just a bit. Same with the stiffness in my lower back. Three months later, after no significant improvement, I started taking FISH OIL (Omega-3) SUPPLEMENTS and CUT MY OMEGA-6 (corn oil, etc.) intake in half. In about 6 weeks I started to feel major improvement! It took about 8 months, but the pain in my forearms is 95% better, the stiffness in my back is mostly gone, and I think it's helping my mental faculties, too. Still some pain across the front of my shoulders, but overall, I'm feeling MUCH better! Give the Omega-3 thing a try--it's an anti-inflammatory--but they say you MUST cut back on Omega-6 oils. Regarding Fosamax? DON'T TAKE IT! If you're on it, GET OFF OF IT! I'm convinced it's dangerous. The FDA isn't looking out for us. They're looking ou F 52 6 months

1  Osteopenia I ended up in the emergency room completely unable to swallow. After an endoscopy it was determined that I have a hiatial hernia, barrett's esophagus, GERD and am supposed to take prevacid forever. I have never had indigestion, acid reflux or heartburn symptoms. I believe that the fosamax did all of this to my stomach and esophagus. I need to talk with my Dr. about this, but I stopped Fosamax immediately and will not be taking it again. F 52 11 months

1  Beginning of Osteoporosis Pain and Muscle weakness in both arms. I couldn't lift a bottle of laundry detergent. I was on it for 3 months and felt perfectly fine before taking Fosamax. After a Dexascan I was advised by my physician to begin 70 mg once a week since my scan showed that I had the bone loss of a 70 yr old woman...I'm 52. I didn't question it...my mother is on the daily dose. She has complained about achy hip and legs and hands for years. I think much of those aches are because of Fosamax. I have been off of it for 2 weeks now and my left arm is almost back to normal. My right arm is still weak and has pain. I believe further study has to be done with this drug. I had absolutely no aches and pains before taking this medicine. For me it is awful. I thought I was losing the use of my arms and hands to arthritis... boy was I wrong... it was Fosamax.  1  Osteoporosis HORRIBLE!! Aching all over, constant crying/worsening depression, constant ringing of the ears. Also, sleep problems, avoiding people and activities, blurred vision. The most heartbreaking factor in all of this is not knowing the cause of all of these mystefying symptoms, and blaming myself for being "weak". I only hope I will someday return to normal. This is just another sad example of drug companies who are just out to make money, and couldn't care less about all the suffering and pain they are causing. We've all been brainwashed into believing that we "Need" these drugs; ductors included! F 52 4 months

1  bone loss abdominal cramps especially after eating. Feeling constipated and bloated with gas. Belching. Never had these symptoms before. Feel as though I have suddenly developed irritable bowel syndrome Only took four tablets over five weeks with no side effects until six weeks later. Then they hit me and totally incapacitated me. I can't eat, have lost weight, I spend lots of time laying on my stomach on the floor. If this doesn't subside soon I don't know what I'll do. I'm self employed and unable to work. a despicable drug.  1  osteopenia stiff and achey shoulder muscles and joints. Unable to move shoulder by week 7. It took me 7 weeks to put two and two together. As advised in the 10/04/07 post, let the FDA know of your adverse side effects: https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/medwatch/ and click on the "BEGIN" button on the right side of the screen. I actually feel lucky that the side effects appeared early on so that I could stop taking it. F 52 7 weeks

1  Yes, 1 per week 70mg Nausea, abdominal cramps, bloating, gas, severe pain in hips and lower back, muscle weekness, fatigue. I was prescribed Fosamax because my bone density scan showed me to be osteopenia, in my hips only my spine is ok. My grandmother had two broken hips. Even with symptoms i continued to take the Fosamax until the back and hip probem that started the third week. I decided to check online to see if my back was also a symptom. This for me is a quality of life issue, my health was continuing to get worse, I have stopped taking Fosamax and would recommend others seek an alternative or at least watch their health carefully and weigh the possible gains agaist the loss of todays health.  1  Osteoporosis After 4 weeks, woke with severe swelling and pain in the left knee. Next day pain and swelling moved to the right knee. Pain so bad, making it almost impossible to walk. Causing many falls since both legs can not support my body. I am a perfectly healthy 52 year old female that feels like I have aged 30 years in three days. Currently pain and swelling still in right leg and now experiencing small red dots on both legs. I am discontinuing Fosamax against the wishes of my doctor who sees no connection to my symptons and the drug. Doctor ran x-rays on the knees and can not find anything. I know that the drug is my problem and will face the osteoporsis, if and when it happens later in life. F 52 4 weeks

I was unable to get out of a chair, bend my knee, and had ongoing pain, which was not usual for me. My Dr.s office has not even bothered to return my calls re the meds they put me on which infuriates me. The pharmacist advised me to stop immediately! F 52 2 months
