FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Osteopenia and Osteoporosis Suffering from aches and pains in my hand, back and shoulders and general joint pain. I have had a burning sensation in my eyes and swelling at times. Chronic heartburn and belching all of the time. Headaches, Dental problems, and feeling generally lousy all of the time. I was prescribed for Osteopenia and Osteoporosis due to Celiac disease. After 12 weeks I decided to do more research about Fosamax and found this site. Low and behold, just as I thought others are having the same problems! I am stopping immediately. M 46 3 months

1  Low dexascan score Mouth sores I took 2 weekly doses of fosamax. Developed painful mouth sores within 24 hours. The sores were almost gone by the end of the first week, but as I had not made a connection, I took a second dose with the same results. It has been 6 days and the sores again are almost gone. I will NOT take this drug again. After reading other peoples more serious and debilitating side effects, I feel lucky that all I had was mouth sores. I will find a more natural alternative, or live with low bone density. Reasearch these drugs thoroughly before taking them, as they are in your system for awhile. F 46 2 weeks

1  Osteopena Don't have enough space to explain all side effects....Swollen joints, fingers swollen more than double the normal size, feet swollen so badly couldn't get shoes on, bruising, gastric distress, headaches, muscle spasms and muscle aches....felt worse than ever!!!! Even had racing heart...didn't think that was a possible side effect until I read other comments on this site. I had my ovaries removed in 2006 (partial hysterectomy 2000). Took Boniva for 3 months and developed such horrible hip pain that I felt like a Barbie Doll whose legs were being cracked off...but the side effects from the Fosamax are far worse than the effects from the Boniva ever were...This product should be banned from the market. Took for 4 weeks and the pain, stiffness, bruising became unbearable. Called the doctor. She advised to not take the 5th dose and if the symptoms subsided to take again in the 6th week....yeah, right! I will never let this pass my lips again.... F 46 30 days

2  Osteopenia Within 24 hours of taking Fosamax, I experienced sternum pain and low back pain. Typically subsided within 48 hours I was originally prescribed Boniva. I took one dose and had horrible side effects (severe sternum pain [thought I was having heart trouble], diarrhea, low back pain, upper pain pain). My doctor discontinued Boniva and started me on Fosamx. My side effects are much more tolerable, but I still have sternum pain, foot cramps and back pain. I am most concerned that if I have any negative symptoms, this stuff stays in your system for over 10 years (if I am understanding correctly). I don't believe that these medications were intended for us to take over decades. Therefore, I discontinued this medication and am doing research. I don't know which direction to go. I have had 4 DexaScans over 6 years, with each one showing more osteopenia. I exercise, eat the right foods etc. However, my doctor wants to me be proactive and that is why he started me on the biophosphonates. Should I try Actenol?? How long does that stay in your system if you have adverse side effects? Any suggestions/ F 45 7 weeks

1  osteopenia I already have fibromyalgia....a painful muscular conditon but boy oh boy I had no idea what pain was. I was taking the once a week dose and after a few weeks experienced severe flu-like symptoms with pain in all areas of my body...chronic and severe head pain, upper back pain, motor weakness, dizziness, generalized soreness requiring narcotics for pain relief. Cannot exercise as I was doing before. Difficulty lifing a gallon of milk, sleep disturbance and on and on. I just hope that discontinuing this drug will get me back to where I was. I will manage the bone loss with aeorbic exercise, calcium and weight training if I can ever get over this hideous set complex of symptoms. F 45 3 days

1  Osteoporosis Severe heartburn is why I quit taking it after 10 weeks. I took it carefully as directed. During that 10 weeks I also had embarsassing hair loss and body ordor which have cleared up after stopping the Fosamax. I will continue to eat right and exercise and take my chances of breaking my hip at age 70 rather than burn a hole in my esophogus, go bald and smell bad this month. Most doctors are salesmen for the RX companies. I'll listen to my gut on this one. F 45 75 days

1  two stress fractures before age 45. 24 hours after taking the once a week dose experienced severe flu like symptoms. It has been 14 days since my one and only dose and am still have extreme achiness throughout my body, fever, chills, headache, nausea, stomach pain and fatigue. I just want to get back to the person I was before fosamax. I would not reccommend this medicine to anyone. As a matter of fact I would strongly suggest they find other alternatives. F 45 1 days

1  osteopenia SEVER back pain with spasms, thought my back was going to break Took fosamax 2 year ago the next day woke up with sever back pain with spasms. I thought was dieing. Drove myself to the doctors office (I don't know how) crying and looking like a fool, I couldn't stand up straight walking with knees bent & back is horizontal to the floor. Spasm so strong it would squeeze all my air out of my lungs and felt as if it were going to break my spine between my shoulder blades. My doctor said it was not the foxamax something else was the cause. Was on Flexeril for 2days. I decided not to take fosamax again just in case it was the cause. Well 2 years later a new Doctor new bone density test. Told me that I really needed to be on fosamax, I explained what happened and that I didn't want to risk it, he assured me it was not the fosamax, that he had never heard of that happening. I took it at 6:00 a.m. 1/31/05 at 8:00p.m. back started to hurt by 12:00 EXTREME pain and spasm. Taking 600mg of ibuprofen every 2 hours. I can't believe I did this AGA F 45 1 days

3  osteoporosis joint pain, muscle spasms in legs, feet (specially hill) pain like tendonitis, stiff hands and even arms, stomach ache the day I take it. Symptoms have been increasing over time. I think I will stop the treatment now, since my symptoms have worsen. When I wake up I can barely walk because my feet hurt. My bone pain is worse and I began to have muscle spasms more and more. I don't know if it worked because haven't gotten my scan yet. F 44 11 months

2  Osteopenic I have had stiffness and soreness in neck, wrists, ankles and most recently the hips. I have also noticed bluriness when reading at night, but never thought of relating it to the Fosomax until I read others experiencing it on this website. After reading these comments, I think I will stop taking as well and see if I can control it through diet and exercise. F 44 6 months

2  osteopenia First day I took it, I had a severe headache and pain through my jaw down my neck on the left side only. I thought I might be having a stroke, and was only 43. I was traveling at the time and so, just rested in the hotel for 3 days. Never really associated with Fosamax and thought it was just severe jet-lag and the flu. Now have been on it for 1 year and suffer severe stiffness in hands and feet. After sitting for an hour, very stiff and painful to get up. Experience shooting pains in my arms and legs. After finding this excellent site, I am now getting off of Fosamax. I don't know if I should go 'cold-turkey' and immediately go off or wean myself off. Any suggestions? I'm grateful to this site, as I thought I was just exponentially aging in 1 year. F 44 1 years

1  Bi-level cervical disk fusion The first week I took it after 24 hours I was bedridden with horrifying hip pain. the second week I was up all night with what felt like food poisoning, stomach cramps, nausea, vomitting and diarrhea. This is the third week and first my left eye started twitching then both, I have a slight sore throat and I am having skin problems sort of like cystic acne behind my ear. since taking Fosamax every joint and tendon issue I have ever had has flared up some that I had not had for years. The side affects prompted me to check the internet and I found this site. I am due to take Fosamax on wednesday, but I will never take it again. I am pre menopausal and relatively young I have always been athletic and have practiced martial arts for 10 years, I have not been able to train since taking this medicine. F 44 3 weeks
