FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  osteopenia I was just diagnosed with osteopenia and prescibed to take the Fosamax but after reading all the comments on this site I dont want to even start it. I have been doing weights for about 10 years at least twice a week and running or walking every day. I already have all the joint aches and had TMJ, just fractured my ankle in Dec and took forever to heal.....so it sounds like I may just make myself worse taking this!!! I think I will pass on it F 55

1  osteopenia tingling and numbness in hands and fingers - muscle pain and weakness in all my joints. I have been taking this medicine weekly for 3 months. Immediately had muscular aches and pains. Thought I might have repetitive motion illness as I was working on several projects involving heavy use of arms and back. Dr prescribed anti-inflammatory drug. No use - pains are still there. After reading this website I have decided to stop taking Fosomax. I still have pain after 8 days without this medicine. I'll check back and let you know how long it takes to recover from this awful stuff. I've decided to take my chances treating my bones with calcium/d/magnesium and exercise. F 55 3 months

1  early bone loss I am experiencing low back pain that should have resolved by now. I only just started suspecting fosamax the last week. The pain and stiffness is centered in my low back and groin, with sciatica on rt side. I decided to stop taking fosamax. I've started seeing a chiro (2 visits so far) for the 1st time ever in my life, and he has found problems that we're working on, so I'm waiting to see how that turns out before talking to my MD about stopping the fosamax. This is worse pain than I've ever had for such a lengthy time. Very debilitating and life-altering. Like others have said, I feel 100 years old. I normally am very active, but find the pain has very much slowed me down. F 55 1 years

MY DOCTOR TOOK ME OFF THE PREMARIN AND PUT ME ON 35 MG FOSAMAX AS A PREVENTIVE TO BONE LOSS. I BLAMED SOME OF THE SIDE EFFECTS ON THE REMOVAL OF THE PREMARIN. A COUPLE MONTHS AGO I SAW MY DOCTOR WITH SEVERE STOMACH PAINS AND WAS TAKEN OFF FOSAMAX. EVERYTHING GOT BETTER AND I REALIZED HOW MUCH IT HAD AFFECTED ME. NOW HE WANTS ME TO GO BACK ON IT AND I WON'T. F 55 18 months

1  improve bone density Thought I was imaging things when I woke up at 2AM with back, chest & muscle pain - enough to want to make me cry, aspirin helped a little. Always had a little joint pain in the morning, but nothing like this. After reading previous posts, I feel this is a direct result from my first dose of FOSAMAX. Called my doctor, she said to stop taking it & scheduled an appt. F 55 1 days

1  osteopenia I experienced bone and muscle pain. I could hardly walk when I would get out of bed in the morning. I felt like I was 100 years old. I developed bumps in one of my hands and they are still there. My GYN put me on the Fosamax and when I told her about the side effects she said she hadn't heard of any problems. I was also on lipitor so I went to my family doctor. He took me off both drugs thinking it could be the lipitor even though I had been on it for 3 years. I waited 6 weeks and then the doctor started me back on the Fosamax and sure enough within a day the symptoms were back. I stopped it and went back on lipitor with no side effects. My husband said he heard on a medical show that Fosamax has phosphates in it, the same stuff in laundry detergent!! I have refused to take Fosamax so the doctor wanted to put me on Boniva. I have refused it and have opted for the calcium nasal spray. I am exercising, lifting light weights and walking. I only have osteopenia in my hips and Do Not take this drug! M 55 6 months

1  osteopenia I took Fosamax 70ml once weekly for 5 weeks. I deveoped pain in hips, legs, & feet that gradually got worse. Then I noticed severe swelling in my feet, ankles, & legs along with unexplained weigh gain. I stopped taking Fosamax 3+ weeks ago. GYN wanted to switch me to Boniva or Actonel which I refused after reading comments made here. Some of my pain has subsided but I continue to have severe edema. Interesting Fosamax is made by same company as Vioxx. Seven years ago I took Vioxx for neck & shoulder pain for about 6 weeks. Vioxx also caused severe edema along with elevated cholesterol and decrease in thyroid hormones. F 55 5 weeks

1  osteopenia Transient severe pains in both hips, mostly iliac crest, & upper femurs. Generalized malaise & fatigue. I took Boniva 4x's(=s 4 months). It has been 2 months since my last dose & I still feel lousy. I am an otherwise healthy & active person, who skis & plays racquetball & tennis. I wish I had never listened to my Md. These drugs are a con game being played on menopausal women by the greedy pharamaceutical industry and they should be recalled. I am happy to have my experience validated by others, but I am sorry we have all been guinea pigs for this drug. F 55 4 months

1  osteopenia Excruciating headaches, shoulder and neck pain, leg cramps Shortly after starting Fosomax I began having shoulder and neck pain. Following that, I began getting excruciating migraines and was prescribed Tylenol#3 and Valium which didn't help the pain at all. I had had bad migraines until menopause but not one matched any of these. The migraines happened twice a week, usually on the same day, and always at the same time (8:30 pm) and landed me in the emergency room on two occasions. I discontinued taking Fosamax over a week ago but have had a continuous low grade headache ever since that only very high doses of ibuprofen relieves. Oddly, neither my own physician or the ER physicians made any connection between my headaches and the drug. F 55 3 months

1  osteopenia Mild indigestion and very severe pain in left shoulder and neck Took 7 doses of medication over a 9 week period. I took the medication for 2 weeks but was having some mild indigestion, sort of the feeling that I had a huge burp that I could not get out. I also started having some pain in my left neck and shoulder but was attributing it to holding the phone at work on my shoulder while using both hands to type. After waiting 2 weeks I resumed the medication because I just knew I should be taking it. I did not have any more indigestion but the pain in my shoulder and neck kept getting worse and worse, especially at night. I woke up one Sunday morning in such pain I just wanted to cry. It was the day that I was supposed to take my 8th pill. It suddenly popped into my head that the excruciating pain started about the same time I started taking this medication. Before taking it I got online to see if there could be any connection. I got on a different site than this and discovered a comment from a woman having the same problems that I was having. I have not taken the drug for 4 weeks, the problems are lessening a little bit, but I wonder how long it will take to really go away, or worse yet, will it ever go away? It has absolutely destroyed my sleep and during the day my neck pops at the slightest move. F 55 7 weeks

1  My Dr. prescribed it. Ultimate extreme pain in my back including spasms, my collar bone, hips, and hands. I became weak and couldn't talk without body pain. I hesitated when my Dr. prescribed this and brought my husband in to help me ask the correct questions as I do not take any medications and was concerned that I may not know what to ask. When asked what the side effects were, we were told that I would experience acid reflux if I didn't follow the directions. I followed the directions and never had acid reflux but when the painful side effects began, I prayed to pass out because the pain was the worse I had ever experienced. When I called to let her know how I physically felt, she prescribed a muscle relaxer which I refused and never picked it up at the pharmacy. F 55 1 days

1  osteoporosis Problems swallowing, swelling of the esphogus, neck pain, severe bone and muscle pain, knee pain, insomnia, ear popping, fatique, lack of energy, heavy chest and back pain, breathing pain The side effects were shocking. I was and active, athletic, 53 year old woman before I figure out that fosamax was the cause of my side effects. I am now 55 and have been off it for 4 weeks. The bone and muscle ache is reduce but my other side effects are still present. I have been told that Fosamax can stay in your body for 1 year. Has anyone been on this drug as long as I have and if so did the side effects go away? Please email me if you have found anyway to restore your health. I went to my gyno(who originally prescribed the meds), a gastro, general doc, and rhuematologist who gladly took my money for many tests and procedures but never pointed out that all my symptoms were the side effects of Fosamax. What crooks! I happened upon this site when surfing the web and finally found answers to my problems. I'm hoping someone will email me to let me know what info you have discovered to help me. I'm feeling like my teeth are starting to be affected. What do I do? F 55 2.5 years
