FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  osteoporosis I had nausea, burning in my esophagus, leg and hip cramps. took fosomax for 1 and a half years. Went off on my own and the symptoms are still there. I had an upper GI done last week and sure enough, I have Barrett's esophagus, which is a thickening due to acid reflux. also my stomach opening will not close all the way, so that really hampers my diet and lifestyle as far as floor exercises. this drug should be banned, I am so upset as this condition could also lead to esophageal cancer, Also read the Book THE MYTH OF OSTEOPOROSIS, doctors cannot be trusted! After reading so many comments with the same symptoms, this is very upsetting, I am only 50 years old! F 50 450 days

1  diagnosed with osteo pena Started yesterday a few hours after taking it with swelling of two fingers which had a little arthritis, then it travelled to my knees and I cannot walk without pain, and I cannot straighten my left leg. Today my hand is better. I stand at work all day and I don't know how to make the swelling go down. I have tried ibuprofen, aleve, and salt bath. This DOES NOT FEEL LIKE MY BODY! My parents take it without side effects. They seem to question my problems with it. F 50 2 weeks

1  osteopenia I only took one pill & had the headache from hell! It lasted all day & I was really sick at my stomach. Then when I woke up today, I was sore all over. My chest was hurting so much I thought I might be having a heart attack. After reading all the other comments on this site - I have decided it is from the Fosamax. I will not take another pill - but will continue on the calcium & vitamin D. I would not recommend this medication to any one! F 50 1 days

1  Osteoporosis Update... It's been 4 months now. I stopped taking Fosamax after only taking 3 pills. The pain in my shoulder was almost unbearable. That was back in Jan. 06.... As of June 06... I'm almost myself again. I still feel it some days, but it's almost normal again. I still have sore hips and back.... but, I'm 50 years old. I can look back and see my mom. She had many of the same aches... She NEVER took Fosamax... Yes, OTC drugs for pain, but that was all. She worked hard and stayed active. She's 84 now. She is in a nursing home.. but it wasn't Fosamax that put her there. Right now I feel better than I have in a long time. Not just body, but mind too. You need to take charge of yourself. NO one knows our bodies like we do. I work hard. I get out in the yard daily. I pull, push, walk, dig and enjoy my yard. What better workout? This site is wonderful. We need each other. I am feeling BETTER without this drug. I hope you will too!! F 50 3 weeks

1  osteoporosis I feel like I have been run over by a truck and dragged behind it several miles. I have constant bone and joint pain; all over my body, but especially in legs and feet. The joints in my hands, fingers and toes are stiff first thing in the morning. My bones also seem sore just to touch or when I bump them against something during daily activities. I have only taken Fosamax about ten months so I have not had another scan to check bone density. I don't think I can continue taking this drug long enough to help. Hope another drug can help.....I have a doctor's appointment in April. F 50 10 months

1  Osteoporosis As I sit here I am in SHOCK!!! After adding to this list I continued to read. My mouth fell open!!! I looked back on my calender just to see how long I took this drug... THREE WEEKS.. I thought stomach pain was all I received from this drug... But after not being on it.. maybe two months now, I guess it is still in my body!!! For the last 4 to 5 weeks I have been having the worse shoulder pain. First day the spasm so bad I could hardly get out of the chair. For three weeks I could hardly talk without crying. Felt like a knife going through me. After three doctors and lots of meds, it is finially letting up. But still tender. My hips have been killing me which I just thought, ok, I'm getting old. I just can't believe this drug is doing this, but I Am believing it!!! In a few short weeks I have felt like I have aged 20 years... What do we do???? How can we get doctors to believe us??? Now, I have been given Boniva!!! I have not started it and I keep looking at it sitting here.. I think it's going in the trash!!! NO, I know it's going in the trash... I'm still in shock... Thank you all for taking the time to help others.. And to think, all I thought was I had stomach pain... I am really mad......... F 50 3 weeks

1  low bone density Horrible! - severe neck pain/headache, indigestion, severe leg aches/cramps(especially at night), insomnia, depression, persistent gastric "full" feeling, generalized body pain, stiffness, low energy/malaise Side effects started within a week of starting "the F word".I expected to have no S/E and hadn't even read any literature on the drug. Took me 4 weeks (of hell)before I realized that it was the Fosamax. Side effects resolved within 5-6 days off the drug. F 50 5 weeks

1  Osteoporosis At first, no side effects. Then I started experiencing pain on left side of my body, but only when I was laying down. Thought the symptoms would eventually subside the longer I was taking Actonel, but in fact they got worse, and it was getting very difficult sleep through the night, as the pain would wake me up every night. I was on the once-weekly dose. Additionally, I was getting pain in some odd places; e.g., under my jaw and under my left ear. I stopped taking Actonel last week and do not plan to take it any more. A girlfriend of my is taking Fosamax but has not experienced any side effects. However, I recently discovered a natural supplement, Femarelle, which shows some promising results in regard to easing menopausal symptoms and preventing bone loss. Studies have shown that it actually increases bone density, so I am giving it a try. Just F 50 9 months

1  Osteoporosis Thought I was getting a virus. Stomach starting hurting bad one night. Went to bed with a trash can beside me. Never got sick but stomach cramped for days. Was only on it about 4 weeks. Doctor told me to stop a month then start back. I just don't feel good about this after reading all of this... I mean is it really worth it??... What did our parents and grandparents do??? I think I'm going to watch and wait and read all I can. F 50 4 weeks

1  Osteopedia After 4 months on drug (35ml once a week) started to experience change in taste, certain foods where making me sick that never effected me before, tooth pain, flu like symptons that come and go. Fatique even after a good night sleep. I took myself off the drug a week ago, hoping to see improvement soon, I am starting to get back to the foods that made me sick before - still trying to stick to exercise routine even though it is tough to motivate myself though the fatique after being active all my life. Now looking into healthy alternatives to deal with building my bone mass back to normal. F 50 4 months

1  Thinning bone I have sever pain in both knees, did not have any knee pain before taking Fasomax. Now I have a hard time getting up or sitting down. I am very active but after taking Fasomax for 10 months I feel like I am 100 years old and can no longer do any of the exercises that I did on daily basis before Fasomax. I can not go up and down the stairs without lot of pain. Every bone and muscle in my body hurts all the time and my doctor can not find anything wrong. I have stopped taking the medication, two weeks ago after reading most of the comments. I am so glad I found this website. In two weeks I cannot believe the difference, for the first time in two years I am able to go up and down stairs again. I can touch my knees without screaming from pain. I still have some aching joints but I believe it will go away in a few weeks given the difference in two weeks. I will never take this medication again, bone loss or not. My thanks to all those who posted their symptoms and saved me from a life of pain and suffering. F 50 2 years

1  Osteopenia After about 6 months I experienced gradually worse joint pain that changed me from healthy and athletic to almost crippled. I can barely walk up a stairs one stair at a time and leaning on the railing. Pain and weakness in my knees and hips, both sides is the main problem. My bone density has increased, but who would want to live this way? I've gone from hiking and biking to practically needing a wheelchair. I've had to move because I couldn't do the stairs to my second floor apartment. I went off it after about a year and I'm desperately hoping my joint function will return. It hasn't improved yet after 1 month off the drug. M 50 1 years

1  osteopenia jaw death; loose teeth; I now need bone grafts in the jaw and at least 6 root canals; bone pain in feet, ankles and hands; cannot walk easily after sitting or resting; I limp for 5 minutes after resting; blurry vision; dry mouth Everone please hear this: After my complaints about bone pain, I was diagnosed by my GP as seriously deficient (86%)in Vitamin D. Since I eat healthy and spend hours in my garden, there has to be more to this issue. I believe that Fosamax somehow depletes Vitamin D, which makes it impossible for your body to use any calcium you're getting. I am now on massive doses of prescribed Vitamin D, but my condition is basically the same as rickets, and I don't know if it will be corrected. PLEASE get a simple blood test to see if Fosamax has dangerously lowered your Vitamin D levels. If it turns out that all the people suffering bone pain are Vitamin D depleted, this is another cause of action against Merck, in addition to the Jawdeath that many of us are suffering. If this turns out to be true for you, please post and let the rest of us know! F 50 4 years

4  osteoporosis/broke hip No side effects but have decided to take myself off the medication because of the all negative findings. I also take calcium, D, etc. and HOPE that this will suffice along with exercise. I am worried because I haven't gone thru menopause yet when I know bone loss is more rapid. I hope I am doing the right thing. F 49 5 years

4  OSTEOPENIA Lower back pain and a few painful toes--don't know if it's related to the Fosamax though. Attention ladies who experienced extreme intestinal discomfort after first pill: I had the same bad pain but by the second pill I had absolutely no intestional problems. Just want to say, give Fosamax more than a one pill chance. F 49 1 years

3  osteopenia I have been taking Fosamax for about 1 1/2 years for my osteopenia, which I was shocked to hear that I had, as I had no symptoms. At my last checkup, I was told the good news that my bone density had improved, and my spine compressions had decreased. When I first began taking Fosamax, the only side effect I noticed was that sometimes I would have slight reflux. However, for about the last six months, pain in my shoulders and arms has increased so much that, at times, I can barely raise my arms over my head without moaning. I have also noticed severe stiffness in my hips, knees, and legs in the mornings or if I sit for a long period of time. The only medications I take are Fosamax once per week and occassionally an antihistamine or ibuprofen. The only daily supplements I take are calcium and a vitamin. I'm wondering what to do; I guess I'll call my doctor and report my symptoms and see what his recommendations are. Ugh! I've been taking Fosamax for about 1 1/2 years. F 49

3  Osteopenia My doctor prescribed the generic version of Fosamax 4 months ago after I experienced severe body aches from Fosamax/Plus Vit D. I have a very low tolerance for medications, so I figured the generic wouldn't work either. After taking it for a few weeks, I didn't notice any "major" side effects--only itchy skin and a little bloating. However, about 2 months ago, I started dealing with insomnia that has begun to alter my quality of life. I'm not functioning well at work anymore, my once "regular" exercise routine is no longer a routine because of lack of energy. It wasn't until I visited this site that I finally understand what could be the problem. I will begin now to wean myself from the drug to see if my insomnia goes away. At least I'm hopeful! Thanks for your honest comments. I'm hesitant about quitting Fosamax, since I've fractured 2 bones within the past 2 years. However, this insomnia is causing too many other problems. I will increase my intake of natural calcium and Vit D...and hopefully get back to my cardio workouts and strength training. F 49 4 months
