FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  osteopenea I dislike drinking a glass of water on an empty stomach, it gives me the feeling of nausea. I suffer from lots of medical symptoms that I link to my Crohn's disease. I wonder if some are due to this drug. If you want to read a fascinating NPR report on this drug, follow this link. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=121609815 F 55 2 years

2  osteoporosis After taking Fosamax for almost 3 years I began experiencing horrendous neck and arm pain. I couldn't raise my arms to put a blouse on or put them behind my back and forget about turning over in bed once I did find a somewhat comfortable position. I'm so glad that I am not the only person suffering these side effects. I called my Gyn this morning, as my Primary care Dr. wanted me to go to an Orthopedic Dr. My Gyn told me to stop the Fosamax for 3 months and just continue with 1000 IU of Vitamin D, Calcium and to make sure I do some form of strength weights. She said that if that helped then maybe I would try Evista. No way, I read those side effects and those are worse than the Fosamax. F 55 3 years

2  Osteopenia Heartburn, spasmodic gastric reflux, pain in hips and lower back, interrupted sleep patterns I was proscribed Fosamax 3 years ago when post menopausal bone scans revealed thinning in my hips and back. Due to reports of side effects,I put off taking it and 'upped' my intake of calcium tablets/exercise which made no difference. After seeing a specialist who assured me Fosamax is the best treatment for people my age (55 year old female), and a bone scan which revealed my bones were almost osteoporitic I decided that Fosamax was the lesser of 2 evils, and began taking it in early 2007 (there is a family history of osteoporosis - my maternal grandmother, aunt and mother have all had debilitating osteoporosis related fractures). Initially I had no side effects, but developed heartburn one evening in June 2007, which has been a constant irritation since; antacids make no difference. I have also had increased intestinal gas and severe enough pain in my lower back and hips to disrupt sleep. I mentioned the symptoms to my specialist; he said that he thought Fosamax was likely t F 55 8 days

2  osteopenia the osteoporosis I began treatment after being diagnosed with osteoporosis, gained a small amount of bone density and was reevaluated as having osteopenia. Then during/after menopause I regressed to having osteoporosis. I stopped taking Fosamax 18 months ago and had my first DEXA scan in 18 months this past May. I lost an additional 8% bone density in my spine - T score is now -3.1. Either the medication didn't help much or not at all. Moreover, almost 2 years ago I developed persistent tinnitus in my right ear and episodic tinnitus in my left. My teeth, orthodontically corrected when I was a teenager, shifted, I developed TMJ and arthritis of the jaw. My teeth have been for the most part, straightened with invisilign and kept in place and to prevent further damage, with a nightguard. I can only assume these problems are related to Fosamax. My doctors want me on a osteoporosis medication ASAP but they all have side effects and frighten me, particularly the infusion drugs. I have always exercised daily, F 55 8 years

2  Prevention of bone loss Swelling of fingers and toes. At least once a year for the past 5 years I have had swelling in at least one finger or toe. I have been tested for Lyme's Disease, arthritis, Gout and blood disorders, they all came in negative. The only prescribed medication I am taking and have been on during the past five yrs has been Fosamax. F 55 5 years

2  osteoporosis I have been feeling progressively more fatigued, with many muscle and joint pains, especially hip pain and stiffness. It had gotten so bad that I couldn't get out of a chair after sitting for 30 minutes without difficulty.I had a lot of muscle aches at especially at night.I also had mild nausea and eye dryness and irritation. It might have helped my osteoporosis, but my quality of life has deteriorated to the point that it is not worth staying on it. I am 55 years old and felt like I was 80! I have been off of Fosamax for 2 weeks and can already tell a big difference in how I feel. I am going to try to exercise more and increase my calcium intake and take my chances. These symptoms developed so gradually that I am sure many other people taking fosamax might have them too and just attribute them to just getting older. F 55 1 years

1  Osteopenia spine & one hip Joint pain, especially thumbs, muscle aches. Extremely dry nose and mouth, headaches, sleeplessness (insomnia) depression, breathlessness, overall feeling of hopelessness This drug Fosamax is a terrible drug, six months ago I was a totally happy person, today I am a mess. In the six months I have taken Fosamax 70, I feel like I have aged 20 years, I'm depressed all of the time, I have no interest in anything, and I constantly am in pain in some part of my body. The people who know me have noticed a change in my personality. My dentist could not believe how dry my mouth is! I have made the decision to stop taking this drug, I will be taking my chances I know, but the quality of my life is gone, and I can't live like this anylonger! I think this drug is very dangerous, and should be removed from the market before someone dies from taking it! (suicide) I believe this drug has caused me to becomed so depressed, to the point of wanting to die. F 55 6 months

1  Osteoporosis I took my first Fosamax pill Sunday morning. I had no effects until Monday morning. I had severe back pain and pain in my left rib cage. I lifted my arm and my back went into a horrendous spasm. I couldn't even get out of bed. I almost called 911. The spasms continued and I couldn't even breathe. I had to take shallow breaths. Just moving put me in a terrible back spasm that is difficult to describe. I thought I was dying. It was a pain I have never felt before. When the pain moved to my front middle chest my doctor told me to go to the emergency room. I left there with a diagnosis of "chest pain of undefined origin." They thought I had strained a muscle and put me on muscle relaxants and an anti inflamatory. My doctor ordered an ultrasound thinking it could be my gall bladder. That test came back negative. I lost three days of work but the pain subsided on the third day. F 55 1 days

1  osteopenia I didn't make the connection, but after reading these comments I think my problems are because of Fosamax. I am stiff when I get up, pain in feet, shoulders, thighs and knee joints. I actually wondered if I had a torn rotator cuff. I have been healthy and painfree all my life. I thought I just started falling apart when I turned 55 in July. I started Fosamax in August. I went to an eye specialist in Sept and she diagnosed a shrinking of the gel that covers my eyes--said it was just due to aging. Is this related to Fosamax? For the past two weeks I have been having upper digestive problems accompanied by a most unusual smell and taste. Others can't smell the odor, but I do all the time. Since taking this poison I have the worst gas imaginable! I will never take another and I hope this is all reversible. I took the once a week and followed the instructions perfectly. F 55 5 months

1  Ostopenia I posted back on 1/4/2010 with severe pain in legs, hips, chest pain etc. I have now been off the meds for almost a year and still am having pain in back and hips. I also now have a labrial tear that I did not have before taking this med. I know the med. didn't cause the tear but I believe that it happened while have so much pain on the med that I don't even know when it happened. Now that I have been off of the med for a year and still having so much pain, I am wondering how many others are still having this much pain and if anyone has an idea how long this pain will last. I have to go to an Orthopedic dr that specializes in labrial tears now for this problem that probably wouldn't have happened had I not been so unsteady on my feet due to Fosamax generic. F 55

1  for osteosporosis I posted back on 3/2/10 with horrible side effects and severe pain in my ankles, feet knees hips, shoulder, ribs and back. I also had shortness of breathe, swelling of the ankles feet and legs along with headaches last year the pain in my shoulder was getting worse and the Dr. sent me for an MRI...my shoulder was diagnosed with a fracture. In November of 2011 I was sitting on my bed, I went to get up and my leg gave way resulting in a fractured femur bone. I was rushed to the hospital and had emergency surgery. I am now pieced together with 2 metal rods and 10 pins. It has been 4 months since my surgery and I am still immobile in a hospital bed at home because the Dr. says my bone growth is too slow. He is now getting me a machine to use which it is supposed to accelerate bone growth. I still remain with most of the pain I described. This has been like a never ending nightmare for me.  1  Osteopenia First I had flu-like symptoms, with the bones in my eye & face hurting, but it didn't last long. Then I experienced severe debilitating pain in my elbows, to the point that I couldn't pick up a cup, or even grasp anything. I quit taking it 2 weeks ago and am already feeling better and the elbow pain is almost gone. Haven't talked to my doctor yet, but I think I'll try to beat the osteopenia with exercise & more calcium. Before reading this forum, I didn't know that pain was a side effect. It was really scary, and I was afraid I was permanently damaged. F 55 6 weeks

1  Osteoporosis Swollen right ankle and sore knees I was diagnosed with osteoporosis after suffering two stress fractures in my feet. I am 55. I was prescribed a generic form of Fosamax and after about 4 weeks, my right ankle became inflamed and swollen, almost like a sprain but I hadn't sprained my ankle. The pain was severe and kept me awake at night. I went to the doctor and he was surprised by this reaction because apparently the side-effect most often seen is a problem in the jaw. He told me to stop taking for a couple of weeks. The week after I resumed, the severe pain in my ankle returned. Also, my knees don't seem to bend and flex in a normal manner and I don't feel like I have good balance and thus afraid of falling. After reading the comments on the website I will discontinue the use of this drug. I have always consumed dairy products and have taken One-a-Day with calcium for several years but nobody told me I should be taking more than that! Now I am taking 1500 mg. of calcium per day and 5000 units of Vit. D. Once my feet and leg problems resolve, I'll be in the gym too. F 55 1 months

1  Osteoporosis Felt like I had the flu only 1000x worse ! Nausea, vomiting, diarrea, and pains in my upper legs so bad I cried. I will never, ever ever, take ANY Dr. recommended drug again. I will continue with taking Vitamins, D, K and magnesium as well as Omega 3 fish oil. This drug is horrendous and I do NOT recommend it to anyone. I think ALL Doctors get a certain kickback from doling out these drugs, and do not care about the patient. No wonder they are so against any kind of health care reform ! They'll lose their their ability to just dash out scripts and may actually have to care and treat people ! 55 1 days

1  osteopenia/fmaily history took Fosamax, 35 mg 1 time week for @ 4 months. not problems noted at all. then in middle april one week i realized i could not get up from a squat position without crawling over to the bed and heaving up with my arms. the previous week, i had had no diffiuclty getting up using the strenght of my legs. I thought i had not been working out enough or consistently and started going to the gym more regularly and working harder. Not only did this not help with muscle strength, but i was getting weaker, but still did not connect this to fosamax because the only side effects i was told to watch out for was the stomach reactions. then, late May i experienced muscle, joint and bone pain that gradually had me on crutches. this continued through early Juy. extreme tenderness on the bottoms of my feet, feeling as if i were an old, old woman, in tears at times. had to change postions in the car to get out, rest, then attemtpt to stand on my feet. legs gave out twice, so had to stand from a sitting postion at work, test my legs for support, then walk very carefully. the Read ALL info re: side effects so you can catch them early adn not suffer like I did for 2 months F 55 3 months

1  osteoporosis severe joint pain, including sternum, back, hips, and severe swollen knees which made it impossible to come from sit to stand without assistance I missed 4 days of work after taking one 7-day pill and was not walking steadily and safely for about two weeks. My doctor suggested I try again and take with a course of Benedril with a prednisone perscrition as a back up plan. My pharmacist told me to stop taking Fosamax. I decided that since the side effect were immediately crippling I would not resume. F 55 1 days

1  diagnosed osteoporosis I feel I've been saved!!I would like to thank all of you for helping me decide! I've just been diagnosed and my Dr wants me on Fosamax. My gut instinct was to say no and I'm usually right. My T-score is neg 1.2. I'm not sure how bad this is, but I will find out. After reading your comments, there's no way I will take this medicine. (cleanser?) I have enough pain with fibromyalgia and arthritis. Thank you and I hope you all get well from this horror! The drug makers should be made to take it themselves. Bet they wouldn't want to do it! How do they face themselves in the mirror? My grandmother lived to be 92 with osteo and died without all these awful symptoms I've been hearing about. It's not worth it,I think. Let's do the natural ways and moderation in all things. That's what I'll do. F 55 0 days
