FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

2  bone density loss I have been taking Fosamax for approximately 3 years. I originally had no side affects that I can recall. However, the last 2 years I have had really bad back pain, starting in the middle section of my back, extreme fatigue and what felt like heart burn. I was always stopping to rest when out anywhere because of the pain in my back. I have a heart condition so it alarmed me and I went to my cardiologist for a checkup. It was not my heart. The pain in my back continued to keep me awake at night and it was extremely difficult to get comfortable in any position. I also noticed that my legs and ankles were very stiff first thing in the morning. This went away after a few minutes of exercising. My doctors did not know what was giving me such discomfort and I have now stopped taking Fosamax entirely due only to the fact that I just ran out of pills and never got a refill. It has been 2 months since I have been off Fosamax and I am feeling like my old self again, a lot more energy, and no back pain at all. However, my legs and feet are still stiff in the mornings. My doctor told me that it was probably the Fosamax causing me such discomfort and has now recommended a drug called ACTONEL. Any feedback from anyone on Actonel? F 60 3 years

1  Dr recommended Fosamax First week was ok. I took my first dose. Had a bit of mild queasiness the first day, but thought if this is the only side effect I get, I should be ok. A week later I took the 2nd pill, and again got queasy. But this time it was more intense, and then the next few days brought more side effects: nausea, dizziness, heartburn/indigestion, headache, weakness: a general feeling of not feeling well. I am also experiencing a metallic taste in my mouth, and food and drink do not taste good! Worst thing I ever did was take these 2 pills. How can they still be prescribing this? I am concerned about the long term ramifications of the 2 pills that I took. WHY is the FDA allowing this horrible medication to be prescribed??? IT IS AWFUL!!! F 60 2 weeks

1  Osteoporosis I agreed to take Fosamax as a last resort after refusing to take the injectable/infusion Reclast and Prolia (after reading the potential life-threatening side effects on this website). I have been on Fosamax for two months. I started having vague symptoms of numbness in my right leg and pain in my knee . Over the course of two days I suddenly developed severe right hip and pelvic pain to the point I now need to use a walker and cane to walk.. I am an active person who walks, swims, or bikes on a daily basis. I have stopped taking the Fosamax and I am concerned that my symptoms will persist. Thank you to the persons who have provided comments on this website regarding Fosamax (and other meds). It validates your thoughts that you are not crazy or a complainer even when the doctors dismiss your concerns and side effects. I was told by my doctor to stop researching on the internet as it was just a place for people to complain and is not based on quantitative data. This medication may work for some people but the horrible And life-changing side effects are very real for others. Proceed with caution. F 60 2 months

1  osteoporosis I have been taking Fosamax and am experiencing prickling sensations all over my skin. The nerves inside my legs feel like they are trembling/twitching. I took Fosamax for 5 years, and had no problems until recently. Does anyone have this? I am now off Fosamax for one month and still have these feelings. I am not sure what to do about this. I am not sure if this is related to the Fosamax or not. How did you get help? What type of Doctor did you see and what did he or she do to help you? I am in NY. Where was your Doctor located/name? I am also taking Evista and Zocor. Any chance you are taking these, too? Fosamax did not improve my bone density until I started taking Evista and magnesium with it, but then I got these feelings. 5 years F 60

1  osteoporosis Dr. Says my side effects are not related to the drug, but ?????????????????? I started taking Fosamax to counter the bone loss I'm experiencing. The first week I took it I was fine the first day but then for the next 4 days I experienced increasing stomach pain that subsided. I took it the second week and started again to experience stomach pain to the point where I admitted myself to the hospital at 10 pm 4 days later. I was diagonsed with irritable bowel and took steps to alleviate the problem. I stopped taking the Fosamax during that time even though the Dr. said it's not related. I've started taking Fosamex again and 4 days later I started exeriencing ringing in my ears, headache and dizzyness to the point where I vomited. Again the Dr. says it's not related. If you say so but I'm not so sure. This hasn't happened to me before. M 60 2 weeks

1  Compression Fracture Spine T8 After 1 weekly dose and even worse after the second one: Ache all over, feels justlike flu, can barely walk for pain in foot, terrible stiffness, creaky sounds from joints, pains in muscles, joints, bones, bad neck pain, stabbing pains in hip and other areas, creepy crawly ugly feeling, diarrhea. Pain med barely helps. All the hypothyroid and arthritic symptoms returned in spite of being on thyroid medication and having no current arthritic symptoms. Thank God for this site. I hope to avoid the disfiguring kyphosis, scoliosis, and/or spondylitis that my mom, grandma and greatgrandma have. Had spine Xrays were taken last month because I have sore feet. Xrays show a compression fracture in T8, of indeterminate age. The doc assumes it to be osteo and puts me on Fosamax. He said it is too late for me to take calcium (even though I have been taking it for many years as well as Premarin). Yet the drugstore bone test last year showed my bones to be very healthy. After the first weekly 70 mg Fosamax pill, The neck pain that I suffered 20 years ago returned from nowhere. Everything I do hurts and my fingers are all swollen. I tried to walk and can't because the pain is so severe. After the second pill, I feel even worse. Yet I'm healthy, eat very well, am active and exercise daily but can't now. As others have noted: I suddenly feel like I'm 100 years old! There is no quality of life feeling like this, so I'm quitting Fosamax. F 60 2 weeks

1  Osteoporosis I took Fosamax for 3 months. During that time I had increasing tightness in my upper back, shortness of breath and lightheadedness. At about 3 months I suddenly had upper chest and back tightness and pain along with pains in my left side, shoulder, arm and neck. I was sure I was having a heart attack and went to the emergency room. I spent a weekend in the hospital and had a catherization and found out my heart was in "very good shape". While in the hospital I missed the weekly dose of Fosamax and was feeling fine by the time I left the hospital. The next Sunday I took my regular dose and within a day the pains were starting again. I have decided I can live with weakening bones better than those pains and who knows what else it is doing. I have a friend with the jaw bone deterioration. I am still doing research and changing doctors to see what I am going to try beyond the calcium and exercise. I already tried Actonel for 3 months and could barely walk after sitting F 60 90 days

1  Osteopenea Because I have a slight build, had a hysterectomy at age 39 and have recently stopped taking 1.25 mg Premarin daily for 25 years due to the HRT scare, my doctor recommended that I take Fosamax to strengthen my thinning bones. Tried it last winter and began to have stomach/ intenstinal cramping, etc. He recommended I try it again. In June, I began taking Fosamax (4 tabs once a week). Thought everything was OK, BUT did not realize that my right shoulder probs and my aching joints were a direct result of taking Fosamax. My shoulder joint escalated into an acute bursitis and now feels lock up. I feel like I'm 85 years old - it hurts to bend down, I'm stiff and sometimes can't get back up. I'm normally fit and relatively agile for my age. I was blaming my asthma medications, but after reading all these comments, I am convinced that Fosamax is not good for my body!! Will STOP today. Thank you for providing this web site. F 60 4.5 months

1  osteoporosis Stomach pain, heartburn, joint pain, bone pain (my collarbone ached!!). Wrists and thumbs so sore I could hardly open jars, and had a hard time lifting 5-lb weights for my weight-bearing exercise (never had a problem before the Fosamax). Doctor has now prescribed Actonel, but it sounds just as bad. I would love to hear more from the person who is trying the natural approach... strontium, magnesium, etc. I switched to niacin for cholesterol management after I had side effects with 2 different statins, and I would prefer to do the same with the osteoporosis. If you read this, please email me! F 60 6 weeks

1  osteoporosis I developed jaw discomfort and deterioration as well assophagas and stomach problems. I also had a problem with softening of my teeth. One dentist couldn't believe how my tooth crumbled when he tried to refill an old filling. My mother also had been on Fosamax for five years; she had spinal compressions during that time. She died of a broken hip just recently. She also experienced more problems than even before with her teeth when on Fosamax, However, Evista seemed to curtail her dowager hump increases and she had fewer spinal compressions on Evista. I could see that Evista was working for her. However, she did have ministrokes, high blood pressure and swelling in her feet in her later years which I believe might have been slightly accelerated due to Evista. F 60 2 days

1  Moderate Bone Loss Shoulder, neck and back pain, arm weakness, jaw pain, upper gastric distress, belching I have been on this medication for approximately 5 - 6 months. The symptoms I've experienced came on gradually -- but now they're definitely a problem and seem to be getting worse. This neck/back pain is terrible...and I have a high pain tolerance. The pain in my jaw is like it's out of place, and I have pain when eating and trying to chew. I looked up the side effects of this drug right after an "attack" with severe back pain, arm pain, a little chest pain and gas..belching, and found this website. Like a lot of you, I thought I was having a heart attack. Too many of us have the same symptoms for this to be anything else. I'm quitting the drug and talking to my doctor next week. F 60 5 months

1  bone density decreased I have had blurred vision, flu-like symptoms, achiness through hips and legs, swollen hands in the morning, headache, chest pressure, many symptoms! I was first told that it could be the side effects of my fosamax by a friend who heard the disclaimers on the radio. I also have rheumatoid arthritis, so having to deal with this extra pain has really caused me much concern and worry. It all started with what I call spasms of my throat (esophagus). I told my doctor, but he didn't seem concerned. Now, I'm taking 2 drugs for the acid reflux which has gotten so much worse. Does anyone have any helpful hints to rid our bodies of this med that is taking a toll on so many people? Shouldn't there be somewhere to help us get rid of the residual effects of this drug rather than just putting in the time?! There should be more testing on this drug. This has hurt many people and destroyed quality of life. F 60 10 weeks

1  Osteoporosis Constant leg pain ranging from a dull ache to horrible throbbing pain that made it difficult to walk, sleep or do much of anything. Pain was concentrated aroundright knee: Behind it, on the side, and sometimes shooting up the front of my thigh. How am I supposed to do weight bearing exercise and strength training when I can barely walk? F 60 4 months
