FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Osteoporosis Pain and weakness in wrists, upper arms, legs My rheumatologist prescribed Fosamax for osteoporosis, when I was 58. I have been taking it once a week for over 2 years and just started feeling pain and terrible weakness in my arms. I can barely keep my arms up to blow dry my hair. I have stopped taking it and hope this doesn't last long. I had xrays and blood work done and so far nothing is showing up but will have more blood work done. F 60 2 years

1  osteoporosis I was dx w/ osteoporosis after a recent bone scan. My prior test was 2 years ago and said I was osteopenia. My PCP wanted to start me on meds then but I refused due to side effects. I exercise, my wt. is WNL, I'm 60 years young. I decided to take the medication. Four days later I developed sudden stiff neck and bil joint pain of my thumbs. I called my PCP and was instructed to d'c the med.(which I already did) I'm two weeks past the first dose and still have the neck pain. I saw my holistic provider and through muscle testing she said my body does not like the Fosamax. I've started supplements and will continue to monitor my systems. I will NOT take these medications.  1  osteopenia I experienced gas and bloating the day I took my first pill. The next day I had flu-like symptoms (joint & muscle pain). Four days later I woke up with a painfully stiff neck. It has been five weeks and I still have a stiff neck, but there has been some improvement. I discontinued this drug and do not recommend it. F 60 1 weeks

1  osteopenia Heartburn, dizziness, hot flashes, and terrible body aches and bone pain that increased with every week I took the medicine. After 18 weeks, I couldn't stand it any longer and stopped taking it. The pain has yet to go away, although it does seem to be lessening. The heartburn is gone, and the hot flashes are diminishing in intensity and frequency. What is the FDA thinking allowing people to ingest a product that was used as an industrial cleaner? It seems as though doctors don't care about the side effects - they say they can't possibly be caused by the drugs and make people feel as though they are imagining their negative reactions. When is our health care system going to really care? F 60 18 weeks

1  Osteoporosis See previous comment from UK at beginning of 2009. I have been off Fosamax for 8 months. The severe pain in hips and groin began to lessen 2 months ago and I now feel so much better. Saw bone metabolism specialist who will not commit to Fosamax being the cause and says I should try Protelos (strontium ranelate) not yet licensed in US. It also has side effects and I have decided not to take. I will stick with calcium and vit D and good diet and self monitor. I will never take Fosamax again. F 60 3 years

1  Osteopenia I can relate to just about everyone else's horror stories. I was diagnosed with Osteopenia 5 years agp and was put on Actonel and then 3 years later changed to Fosamax (the generic form) due to insurance costs. I have a HUGE feeling of a lump in my throat, along with a heavy feeling down through the sternum. I have severe jaw/teeth/ear pain on one side of my face and overall have lost my energy. This has lasted 2 ½ months now. Has anyone else had this huge lump feeling in their throat--how long did it last after stopping the med? I have seen many specialists and had numerous exams, MRI, CT, x-rays, endoscopy, all kinds of blood tests, a vocal chord probe to rule out everything and to find out what was wrong, but no one could find the cause of the pain. The only medication I take is Fosamax, so have been told to stop it. I am convinced Fosamax is the cause. I will NEVER take this med again and have called/e-mailed all my friends to cease using it and to spread the word. My doctor knew nothing of these side effects and said they certainly weren't on the information she had available. This drug is very dangerous for some of us. After using it 4 years on the 35 mg. dosage, my bone density had not improved so my prescription was changed to 70 mg. That's when I began having all these problems. I wonder if I will ever be better. F 60 5 years

1  osteoporosis Severe acid reflux that was unaffected by Rx medication; also severe migraines starting the day I took the medication. Migraines were also unaffected by usual Rx medication. Acid reflux began immediately and even specialist didn't associate it with Fosamax. I went through test after test and in the end was diagnosed as "unknown cause". Migraines came back after a hiatus with a vengence, especially on the day I took the med. None of the usual medications relieved the pain. It wasn't until I found this site that I put the pieces together. F 60 12 months

1  osteopenia Sever shoulder pain, couldn't dress, left hand swelled & developed lump. Then other shoulder froze and right hand swelled. Leg muscle pain. Stopped taking Fosamax two months ago and the pain stopped, however, left foot has been swollen for 2 months and now index finger on left hand and 2/3 of right hand are swollen. Pain in both feet when I first get out of bed and try to walk. Am taking several ibuprofen a day for the swelling. Had blood work done and everything is good - doctor agreed that it was the fosamax that was causing my severe pain. Anyone considering taking Fosamax, please research for side effects and report any problems to your doctor immediately. My bone scan showed reverse of my bone loss - but the side effects negate the improvement. F 60 2 years

1  Recommended by doctor Extreme hip and knee pain on right side; leg weakness; extreme stiffness after sitting or lying down; having trouble walking; fatigue; having trouble making it through the day at work; recently have a strep infection, but no sore throat. I have never felt so bad from something that was supposed to help me! Merck should do the responsible thing and take this drug off the market. I'm fed up with the drug companies trying to give us a pill for everything. I'm really glad I never took hormones! Wish the doctors would be more open-minded to their patients and stop believing all the propaganda the drug companies produce! F 60 3 months

1  Had signs of osteoporosis I got heartburn after 11 months and stopped taking it. Also had dry eye couldn't wear my contacts, and got this weird sparkley color and rings effects in my left eye. Also got what I thought was a floater, no it was caused from shirking in the back of the eye. Feet hurt and left side of body too. lose of muscle can't seem to lift anymore. Have been off fosamax for a year now and still have effects from the drug. Eye site is blurred at times, left side of body aches more, indgestion isn't so bad but get it without warning where as before I could eat anything. Getting hot flashes and nite sweats again. Lost of muscle. Was put on Boniva 1 pill and was totally sick for 3 weeks, its as bad or worse than fosamax. I do not recommend any of these pills to anyone. My doctor said to not take anymore and to increase calicum and vit D and excerise. Have been doing those but will increase. F 60 11 months

1  osteopenia nausea, burning in esophagus, lightheadedness/dizziness, joint pain Symptoms worsened with time. After 6 weeks, was so dizzy, I thought it dangerous that I might fall and therefore was more of a risk factor than the osteopenia itself. Also, corresponding to when I began Fosamax, my repetitive motion stress injuries in wrists flared the worst in 20 years. Is there a correlation? Took a good 10 days for dizziness and nausea to clear my system after stoping Fosamax. My wrists began to improve signifcantly after stopping this drug. F 60 6 weeks

1  osteoporosis I took 4 doses of Alendronate in a one month period. My last dose was 12/16/2009 and I still have severe bone and muscle pain. This drug is POISON. I have such pain that I can only get around by using a walker or cane. The people who make this CRAP should be forced to take some of their own medicine and suffer like the victims they pushed it on. They wouldn't be able to open their wallets to put all the money their making by pushing this POISON on the unsuspecting public and the doctors who only listen to the drug companies instead of their patients!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The FDA is not out to protect the public, they only protect the Drug Companies. I have reported my severe side effects to both the FDA and the criminals who manufactured this drug and all I received was an e-mail letting me know they received my complaint. Nothing will be done about this drug until the lawyers get involved which shouldn't be too far off as they're always looking for ways F 60

1  osteopenia painful shoulder and hip joints. general weakness- a grocery bag seems too heavy !! lots of stiffness when getting up in the AM. I feel much older than I am. I didn't research this drug before I started taking it on dr. recommendation after bone scan showed 18% density loss in hips over base line scan 2 yrs prior.I don't have numbers but I'm just in the ' caution ' zone. I was shocked when I got the diagnosis as I have no family history for this condition. So I took the drug. Unfortunately, I needed to change health ins carrier( group to individual) at this time and was denied coverage from my previous carrier. I finally did find coverage but am penalized with a 50% inc over posted premium due to my "condition" and Fosomax rx.! Now I feel like a fool to have been so gullible and not researched before I took that first pill. Its costing me big time in ins premiums and I won't be able to get rid of that. I think I'm going off this stuff and see what happens. I excercise daily ( walking briskly for about 2 ,sometimes 3 mi) but don't do specific weight bearing excercise for my arms.Need to start that. I eat well. Aside from Estrace F 60 6 months

1  osteopenia none -- stopped after 3 doses due to risks. It is another lawsuit waiting to happen due to the risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw. After hearing 2 oral surgeons discussing the patients they are personally seeing with this irreversable condition, I researched it myself. There is no way I will risk ths condition. F 60 3 weeks

1  osteoporosis After only 2 doses, I suffered severe muscle and joint pain in hands, arms, legs and ankles on the day that I take the medication and for several days after. Thumb joints are so swollen that I have not been able to use my hands for anything that involves thumb use. Exercise is supposed to help osteoporosis, but after taking fosamax, I hurt so bad that exercise is out of the question. Nothing this bad can be good for you! With all of the pain I am going through, I decided to check out side effects on the internet - and I see I am not the only one. Will not be taking this awful stuff any more. F 60 2 weeks
