FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

2  osteopenia See next description - Note jaw pain - Research "osteonecrosis" aka "jaw death" as this is something to discuss before you have any dental work. I have taken Fosamax for 4 1/2 years and will not continue. F 58

2  osteopenia Pain in hip, knee and toes. Lower back pain extreme to the point of difficulty getting up out of a chair - walk bent over for a few strides! Difficulty getting in and out of my car. Extreme fatigue. Interrupted sleep pattern. Am taking in liquid form, once a week and have taken 3 doses. I have always been an athlete - competed in swimming in the Senior Olympics in Va. last year. Don't have the energy to train anymore. Did not realize the pain I was experiencing could be related to this drug until someone suggested I look at this website. My GYN plans to keep me on it for 2 years and rerun the bone density scan. I'm contacting her to discuss other options. F 58 3 weeks

2  osteoporsis severe pain in my hips I have been taking it for 2 months. I am quitting. I will continue with my calcium, vitamin D and exercise. Also I have cut down on my coffee, alcohol and salt intake. I have no family history, regularly exercised, but my calcium intake was poor. My own stupidity. I am hoping to maintain what I have by changing my habits. F 58 2 months

2  Osteopenia; multiple fractures Took first dose in a.m. as prescribed. By late evening began having pain in upper chest and right shoulder, as well as severe diarrhea. By the next morning the pain was worse in my shoulders and back, still had diarrhea, as well as a massive headache. The rest of my bones and joints ached as well. My guess would be that a medication that is supposed to work within the skeletal system to help strengthen bones may cause some sort of effect on the bones themselves, but the fact that it's so painful is probably not worth it. I've had several fractures over the last 10 years or so (ribs, toe, shattered wrist, stress fractures in feet), and diagnosed with osteopenia. My dr. is concerned about possible spinal fractures so Fosamax was prescribed after my insurance co. refused to pay for Boniva. I don't think I can continue to take Fosamax if it's going to cause me this much misery every week. 58 1 days

2  preventative aches, neck, etc. etc. I really didn't put 2/2 together really thought I was just getting older, but I'm a zippy sort of person, agile, lively, just wasn't feeling like me.....(I posted earlier by the way re: normal bone density), I chucked the stuff along with Diovan BP meds. and I feel like a person again - more than a month now.  2  Osteoporosis Pain and swelling in hand at thumb joint. Water retention in legs and abdomen. I quit after 5 weeks after reading on here and trying to decide. A week after quitting, I have had random neck and back pain. I did not have this in the past. I had no pain before being put on Fosomax. I am hoping natural things such as D3, K2, calcium, exercise, etc...are going to be enough...or at least until they find better drugs. F 58 5 weeks

1  Osteoporosis On the first week of taking this drug I experienced tender feet on day 5, when I took my 2nd dosage l immediately broke out in a rash on both legs and my hands and wrists which latest 4 days, my legs were very painful to walk on, apon waking the next day l could hardly move, effecting my muscles bones and joints in my knees calfs ankles heels and my hands fingers and wrists, I have had no strength in them. The first week upon waking was debilitating, my second week eased a little upon waking but apart from that nothing has changed and it has now been a month. This drug is poison and should be banned, I have seen 3 medical doctors 2 of which are specialists in the last month and they seem totally ignorant about the side effects of this drug, one doctor insisting to treat me for rheumatoid arthritis. I have since found out that even one of the local dentists now are handing out information on one of the side effects this drug can cause concerning Osteonecrosis of the jaw, they are claiming that 1 in 7 people who are taking Fosamax have complications after dental surgery.  1  Osteopenia Fatigue, burning in stomach, constipation, pain at recent fracture site (stress fracture of tibia) headache lasting 3 days. I was prescribed this medication because I suffered a stress fracture of my left tibia from jogging. Had a bone scan and was told I was "in between" having osteopenia and osteoporosis. I was given the 35 mg. dosage of the generic form of Fosamax, which I take weekly. After the first dosage, I did not notice anything other than mild constipation. After taking the second dose, my stomach started burning whenever it was empty (between meals), I started having pain at the site of my fracture (which was incurred 17 weeks ago), headache that lasted for 3 days and more severe constipation. I am an active middle aged woman who exercises every day and takes calcium, vitamins and minerals and could not figure out why I suddenly felt so ill until I researched the known side effects of this medication. After reading all of the reports here, this medication scares me and I am going to stop taking it immediately. F 58 10 days

1  osteoporosis - hips and spine Took my first once a week dose (70mg) yesterday. Expected gastro problems since I already have reflux, but at the end of the day thought I was doing great. THEN I WOKE UP THIS MORNING! Pain all over my body - left shoulder, hips, back, chest. This is not worth it! My Dr says according to the World Health Organization I have osteopenia, but according to the more stringent National Osteoporosis Foundation guidelines, I have osteoporosis. I'm going to do calcium, vitamin D, diet and exercise and take my chances. This is a scarey drug! F 58 1 days

1  osteopenia SEVERE MUSCLE CRAMPS AND CHARLEYHORSE in my calves and thighs EVERY night, waking me instantly and making me fly out of bed to try to stop the pain. Also, numbness and tingling in feet and lower legs. I am extremely athletic, so none of these symptoms are common for me----they started about two months after I started taking Fosamax. My doctor says there is no connection, but nothing else in my life or exercise program has changed. If I put off taking my weekly fosamax for an extra week, the muscle cramps lessen. F 58 10 days

1  early osteoporosis I took my first dose of Fosamax (generic version) on Saturday morning, and by Saturday night, I felt like I had stomach ulcers with a large side order of heartburn. I got through the weekend by slugging down Pepto Bismol, and called my doctor on Monday morning. He told me not to take it any more, and I couldn't agree more. Very unpleasant and frightening experience. I hate to think of what this would do to your insides long-term. F 58 1 days

1  hip osteopenia Complete immobility due to extreme muscle pain within 24 hours of first 70mg dose. Discontinued use after single dose. Muscle pain mimics hip injury in addition to back/neck injury. A week later I still cannot reach my feet. Putting on socks/shoes/pants is nothing short of torture. Still driving to work but lifting right leg to brake using right hand at the knee. F 58 1 days

1  Osteoporosis Almost immediate pain in my groin area--like nothing I've ever experienced. My "specialist" insisted I stay on the drug. The 2nd dose had me rocking myself in pain, holding my groin area most nights that week. I was in tears. Still, I hoped it would pass. Finally after the 3rd pill, the intense groin agony was accompanied with severe chest/rib pain. I stopped taking it. My doctor was so angry, she raised her voice to me. I quit her, too. We must LISTEN TO OUR BODIES! I have no idea how Fosamax was approved by the FDA; it's poison! It destroyed my friend's esophagus, & caused me much misery. Fortunately, the side effects subsided after I stopped taking Fosamax. BTW, the MG amount noted above is probably incorrect. I can't recall the dosage, but it was the one pill per week prescription-& doc said she was giving me a "typical"doseage for an osteoporosis patient in my age range. (I am 58.) I advise anyone to stop taking Fosamax immediately if you have averse side effects. I don't think the medical field knows enough about this disease to treat it properly. I feel we're being used as test subjects. We deserve better than a box of pills that includes a list of so many dangerous side effects, the company includes MANY pages of warnings, written in font so tiny, that even one with great vision (like me) needed a magnifying glass to read all the risk factors of this "medicine." It's all about money, as usual -the greed of the pharmaceutical industry. We need to tell our doc's & show these corporations we will not allow them to prescribe us toxic chemicals! Best of luck to all. Regards, NJ F 58 3 weeks

1  Osteopenia/osteoporosis Excruciating neck and back pain, nausea, some heartburn, sciatica, arm pain, loss of appetite I have been having excruciating, stabbing back and neck pain for weeks. At first, I thought maybe I was having a heart attack, but I have been convinced by my doctor for a while now that there is nothing wrong with my heart. So, I started thinking about the medications I have been started on recently, one of them being Fosamax, the only other one being a small amount of Estrace cream about twice a week. Then, I found this website and saw that a lot of people were having some of the same symptoms I have been having, so now I am convinced the Fosamax is the culprit. My last dose was 9 days ago, but I am still having terrible pains. I am hoping as time goes on, these symptoms will subside. This medicine is pure poison! Apparently doctors do not do any research as to side effects when they prescribe these drugs. From now on, I will do extensive research on any drug that I am prescribed before I ever take one dose!  1  Osteoporosis I took one pill as I am on the weekly dose. Less than 24 hours after taking I developed severe mid back pain in my mid lateral thoracic spine and felt like it was in my ribs too. All movement caused pain. At first I thought I had slept wrong in bed. The pain however throughout the day did not improve. I realized then I had taken the pill the morning before - I looked up side effects. I stopped the medication and don't plan to take it anymore whatsoever. Its is Day 3 and I am still having significant pain and I never really suffered from back pain, unless I did too much yard work - I might get an little ache in my lower back for a few hours. I will research natural ways to improve my bone density. I would not recommend this drug! F 58 1 days
