FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  Osteoporosis I was taking Actonel for 4 years, then switched to Alendronate for 4 years. I experienced no side effects while taking either of these medications. In fact, it brought my numbers up to where my doctor told me I could stop the medication. However, I've been experiencing horrible muscle/joint/bone practically from head to toe pain since stopping and I'm convinced it is from the Alendronate (Foxamax). I went from a very active, 57 year old to feeling like I had been run over by a truck after stopping the Alendronate. It didn't happen right away - it took weeks before I started experiencing this horrific pain. I did call my doctor to see if this could possibly be side effects from stopping the medication, but he said he'd only heard of people having these symptoms while on the medication. I've started researching this on the Internet and have found a few people that are experiencing what I have after stopping Alendronate. This has been going on for over a month now and I'm wondering how much longer I will be in this kind of pain. I have found a little relief in taking Ibuprofen - 800 mg. 2x/day, but am not happy about having to take medication to "fix" the pain from having taken Alendronate. I've been off the Alendronate since April 10, 2012 and it is June 10, 2012. The pain started approx. 1 month after discontinuing use of the Alendronate and has now continued for the past 2 months straight. I'm wondering if anyone has been on this medication and stopped, then began to have symptoms like I have and, if so, how long before the pain subsided (if at all)? I am absolutely miserable with this pain and am hoping it goes away soon. I feel like I went from a pain free person to an invalid in such a short period of time. F 57 4 years

3  Osteoporosis I had none, really, until after being on it for about 2 years. Then, I noticed that I would get very stiff in the hips and knees with sitting (30 minutes or so) and have to get up slowly and walk a few steps before I could walk without walking like I was 90 years old. I asked the doctor, my endocrinologist, about this and he said it was probably coming from the Fosamax. I was also having to sleep with a knee pillow between my legs, because when I laid on my side with one knee on the other, it hurt badly. I left the Fosamax off for a week, only because I missed taking it, and the symptoms got better. They started up again and I missed it intentionally again about a month later. Gradually, the stiffness in the hips and knees began to subside. I kept taking the Fosamax. Recently, just for more energy, I began taking Brewer's Yeast tablets which I have taken off and on through my life. Well, since doing that, I don't need the pillow between my legs anymore and I don't have the stiffness in my knees and hips after sitting. The only time I notice the stiffness now is if I make a driving trip of 2 or more hours. I have not decided to stop the Fosamax and am not quite sure what to do. But, like many others, I am beginning to seriously question if this is really going to be good for me in the long run. I wonder if there have been any autopsies of people who have been taking Fosamax for a while to determine exactly what kind of bone or bone density the Fosamax is really building. I would like to know this. F 57 3 years

2  Osteoporosis After stopping Fosamax I was starting to feel like my old self again. I restarted it and now am having the stiffness again, so I am stopping it indefinitely until I see my doctors again and will get their opinions on this. The reason I went on Fosamax in the first place is because I had what I think was a slipped disc that had me moving around slowly. I wondered if I had ruptured a disc but the x-ray did not show any such, just low bone density. Because I had to move around with great care for about 6 weeks until I got over the back problem, I thought maybe I should seek further evaluation. So, I went to Duke University Medical Center and was placed on the Fosamax. However, since I now feel worse than I did before I started, I am stopping this stuff. Also, the Quick Time Video on the Gillian Sanson website was most informative and I am going to take my chances. I will say that on December 23, 2004, I climbed from the front seat to the second row seat of our Suburban and leaned over the back of the second seat to get an umbrella from the third seat, as I was caught in a heavy rain. I think I fractured a rib and it took 6 weeks to get completely over that. However, I did not go to the doctor since what I read on the internet indicated that there was nothing really to be done for such an injury and that it just took time. I took an Advil at night as necessary while I was uncomfortable turning over in bed. I am now fine. I also read on the internet that leaning over a firm surface, as I had done, is a frequent cause of rib fractures. So, I don't think that my rib fracture was caused by anything other than my own carelessness and still trying to climb around and do the things I have always been able to do. I guess at now, 57, I need to be more careful. However, I am giving up the Fosamax. I will continue to read the postings here just to stay up to date on what is going on with this drug. I, too, believe that it may not be long until Fosamax is also taken off the market, like Celebrex, etc., as one person mentioned. I would like to know what others who have stopped taking the drug are doing, if anything. I am going to start walking on our treadmill and doing some simple weight lifting. It is interesting to me that I was told not to lift over 10 lbs. until the results of my follow up bone density were in. Those results showed that my density was stable, but no one mentioned whether or not I should not lift more than 10 lbs. By the way, I can't exist if I can't lift over 10 lbs. There is just too much to be done for me to never lift over 10 lbs. I do try to be careful, however, when I am lifting. Again, I would like to know what others are doing in place of the Fosamax beyond exercise and a healthy diet, if anything. F 57 3 years

2  Osteoporosis Severe stomach pain and burning, bloating, difficulty swallowing, cramps in legs and feet, pain in knee, hip and neck I took the generic for 9 weeks per directions. I had some stomach discomfort and difficulty swallowing after each dose but nothing too severe, then starting getting unusual cramps in my legs and feet while sleeping. After the 9th dose, I had severe stomach pain very high up between my ribs that would not subside and an odd burning sensation in my stomach and abdomen and was very bloated - no stomach upset, just pain. I also developed pain in my knee and hip and had a difficult and painful time walking. I am going to ask my doctor about alternative treatments. F 57 9 weeks

1  Osteoporosis Couple days after taking 1st dose my eyes became extremely sensitive to light, with a black line in my vision, then my jaw and side of my face became extremely painful, then came severe stabbing head pain, I cannot even have A hair band or clip in my hair, sinus pain like broken glass in my sinuses, accompanied with an odor i can smell like my sinuses are rotting,my hand became tingly and would totally lock up, my foot would become numb and tingly also. Then came severe stabbing cervical spine pain, stabbing thorasic spine pain, with pain that wrapped around in my kidney area on both sides, rib pain that felt like they were broken, to take a breath is excruciating , abdominal pain, pain in an ankle that I had previously broke. The pain in my thorasic spine feels like it is deteriorating or broken. All this combined with severe fatigue, was majorly magnified after receiving triger point injections in the thorasic region, (non of the Dr's I went to over this period nor myself figured out it was from the Fosomax yet, so each symptom was being treated separately with no relief) a problem with memory, some hair loss. I literally feel poisoned. I am to the point that I have been bed ridden for 2 days. There is no way to position myself to relieve the pain, when I do walk I am hunched over because i can not straighten up. Even my hips hurt, literally everything hurts, a horrible debilitating kind of pain. A pain that makes you have to wonder if this is life threatening, be I read the information insert for this drug, these side effects were not listed, so I kept taking it not realizing i was continuing to poison myself. I do not know yet if any of these symptoms are reversible. Greatful I have found information on line from other patients confirming what I am experiencing. I just really wish i knew if this hell is permanent or not. F 57 3 days

1  Bone loss After 2 mos I started noticing that I was choking on my food at every meal, I was coughing, had diarrhea and my hair was falling out. Then I started getting debilitating joint/bone pain. I am very active and fit and hike regularly. I became so unstable that I fell on a hike and broke my rib. I couldn’t get up due to the severe knee pain. Since then I figured out it was the drug and stopped taking it. It’s been 2 weeks and I can barely walk. The pain is a 9 and every movement is excruciating. I told my doc and she says I had an allergic reaction. I disagree. These are side effects of this poison! I’m so worried that I’ll never get back to normal. I have to coach volleyball starting in 10 days! Do not take this poison. F 57 3 months

1  Osteopenia Stiffness, aches & pains in all joints. Slight swelling. Started in my hands, really bad. I thought I was getting arthritis, but then I realized every joint in my body was stiff and achy, including my feet! When I move, I can hear the joints crack and pop. I had not connected it to fosamax, but decided to check the brochure for side effects and noticed that this condition was one of the side effects, though not the main one advertised. I have only been off the drug for one week. Notice slight improvement. Am hoping it will get better the longer I am off of it. F 57 4 months

1  Preventive Severe pain in my ankles and wrist keeps me up at night and effects my life style. Pain relievers such as Advil do not touch the pain and HydroCodone has its own problems and side effects. I quite taking Fosamx for a month and was getting better. I tried it after a month (weekly dose of 70MG) and by bedtime my pain was back. I will continue to take calcium but I am done with Fosamax. Someone needs to get this imformation out to the public, it took me a long time before I found this site. The Fosamax manufacturer probably knows about these problems but doesn't want the information out. F 57 3 months

1  osteopenia Hands, feet, skull, and eye pain, and blurring. Tendinitis in arms and legs. Opthalmogist starting monitoring for glacoma after noticing changes in eye. Podiatrist thought I should be checked for rhematoid arthritis. My fingers swelled so much, I had to have my wedding ring resized from a 5 to 6-1/2. Didn't connect all these symptons for a very long time, until my doctor (due to stopping hrt) increased the Fosamax dosage from 35 mg. to 70 mg. once a week. After about 2 months all of my symptons had intensified, and the light went on! After stopping Fosamax with my doctor's blessing all of the symptons disappeared. Last glacoma test showed a big improvement. I will never take this drug again. F 57 3 days

1  to CURE low bone density i was told only took it for 6 days, when a protrusion began to develop on my left EYE! i stopped immediately, and started investigating. I should have known - never trust any kind of drugs! Unfortunately too many doctors do.... Just read Gillian Sanson s THE MYTH OF OSTEOPOROSIS (What Every Woman Should Know About Creating Bone Health) - 2003 Edition. You will never touch FOSAMAX, guaranteed F 57 6 days

1  extreme osteopenia 1 pill 70 mg 19 hours later I awoke in such severe pain. Headache, sore throat, chest, back, legs, wrists and hip pain like I never, ever had before and don't ever want again. It is now 4 days later I still have chest pain a sore throat and in the morning my wrists still hurt. I am scheduled for another dose of death Saturday, but I don't believe that life is supposed to be this way. I am 57 and if this is what the rest of my life will be like then I would rather be dead! I will take my chances with my bones the way they are. I think before prescribing this medication the doctors should try it themselves, they may not be so critical of their patients that do not want to take it anymore. F 57 1 days

1  Osteopenia Inner knee joint pain - to the point where it became difficult to bend my knees. Drug made it impossible for me to do any significant cardio exercise, even yoga. Kind of counterintuitive I'd say, in terms of preventing osteoporosis. F 57 3 months

1  osteopenia I've been taking this drug for seven months and started with muscle and joint aches a few months ago. I never connected it with Fosamax until recently when I read an article about users could get muscle and joint aches. These pains increased to the point where I would wake up in the night and could not go back to sleep. My hands and lower legs would actually pulsate with achiness. Just stopped taking this drug and have not noticed any change yet. Am going to a rheumatologist tomorrow. F 57 7 days

1  OSTEOPENIA I took Fosamax for 20 weeks and I've been off of it for 30 weeks. Most of my symptoms have subsided, but some are growing worse. Has this happened to anyone else? My right thumb has been numb and stiff upon waking, and that has increased to both entire hands and it lingers throughout the day. Also my feet bottoms and toes are still achy in places. I don't know whether to be tested for something new--the hands--or if side effects can wax as well as wane after stopping the drug. F 57 20 weeks

1  Osteoporosis due to Synthroid meds Stiff neck, weird sensations in my jaw, severe gas, loose stools, tighting of skull, general uneasiness. The Synthroid medications caused me to have these problems. My doctor spent almost one hour trying to talk me into taking this poison. I took one just this past Tuesday and will never take another one again. I found good information about managing Osteoporosis and I won't suffer the long term side effects of the Fosamax, which is brittle bones. F 57 1 days
