FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  osteopenia from 3 yrs of prednisone I have taken four doses so far, one a week for four weeks, and have taken it strictly as directed. I have recently noticed some intermittent nausea and some burping...the nausea is bothersome and I am wondering if it is caused by the fosamax. I also have had polymyalgia rheumatica for 3 years and my bone loss is due to being on prednisone for that long. I have aches/pains/stiffness due to the polymyalgia and can't say that has worsened since starting fosamax F 71 4 weeks

1  Low Bone Density After taking Fosamax 70mg for about six months, I started experiencing severe sciatia. I asked my doctor if he thought it could be due to Fosamax, he said "oh, no, it wouldn't do that." Well, none of the routine treatments for sciatia have worked on me so, after reading the other comments at this website, I'm thinking it's time to stop doing Fosamax. Thanks to all of you. I appreciate the opportunity to hear others' experiences with this drug -- I'm now really convinced that Fosamax needs to be reevaluated by FDA. F 71 9 days

1  KYPHOSIS "Dowagers Hump" TERRIBLE FATIGUE ! My osteoporosis was caused by not taking enough calcium and vit.D. I only drank enough milk for my breakfast cereal. So what the hell did my doc put me on this drug when all I had to do was increase calcium and "D." Going to stop next Monday. Read the recent reports of: "Fosamax, Necrosis of the Jaw" on Google, Cleveland Clinic website and Johns Hopkins website. Also Googled: "Fosamax, Jaw Death." If you have teeth extracted while on Fosamax, you may get this disfiguring disease where your jaw will die.......... SCARY!! M 71 15 months

1  Osteoporosis I started Fosamax in 2003. Shortly afterwards, I developed very stiff painful ankles, knees and joints in fingers. I continued drug for 7 mos. and was diagnosed as developing arthritis. I stopped Fosamax. After some months arthritis symptoms disappeared. About a year later, I started Fosamax again, 'arthritis' reappeared plus I now started experiencing Reflux and stomach problems and was put on a proton pump medication. After 4 months of pain, I again stopped Fosamax and the PPIs. Everything cleared up. But my Dr. pressured me to try osteo drugs again. I did, same results, this time ending up in physio for unexplained swollen Achilles tendons and then ER with what seemed like a heart attack. The heart Dr. said it was really severe reflux, to take PPIs so that I could take also take Fosamax!! It was explained to me that the osteo drug causes somach acid, the acid gets into the blood stream and then into muscles and joints. I stopped taking both osteo drug and PPI and sympto Do your research! Know your self and your situation. Take into consideration other illness you may have. Millions of women are taking these drugs, maybe there is just a subset of us that can't tolerate? FDA is supposed to be coming out with new guidelines Sept 2011. I think they are just looking at jaw and femur breaks, not muscle/joint pain. F 71 3 years

1  Osteoporosis Within 3 days of takig the first pill, I developed a rash on my feet, and swelling. A week later I took a second pill, and the rash moved up my leg, and the swelling got worse. My doctor said to stop the pill, which I have done, and he said to take Zrtec for 2 weeks, as that's how long it will take for the rash and swelling to go away. I am going back to once a month Actonel, which gave me no problems. The reason I switched to generic Fosamax, is because my insurance company sent it to me instead of Actonel, so I tried it, and I am so sorry I did. F 71 14 days

1  to prevent bone loss Started experiencing severe pain in various joints and swelling around the ankle recently. X-rays are all normal. Primary care physician suggests that it is arthritis. I suspect this may be a side-effect of having taken Fosamax for so long. I have no family history of arthritis and have a very healthy lifestyle. I'm a Yoga instructor. This pain has been debilitating and I think I should stop taking Fosamax altogether to see if I get better. F 71 10 years

1  Low bone density in spine A bone density scan after a hip fracture (due to a very bad fall) showed reduction in density in spine only so Fosamax was prescribed. After being on it for about about six years, I was diagnosed as having a complete heart block with a very slow erratic heart rate. On subsequently reading adverse reports re Fosamax and the heart, I had a bone density test, which showed an improvement so decided to stop taking the drug - a friend who had stopped taking it two years ago because of "dead jaw" experienced no subsequent deterioration in bone density. I continued to take a natural bone density supplement and after only 4 years noticed that my pulse rate was faster and steadier. I had a heart monitor check check for a week about four months later which showed that my heart was back to normal. I will never consider taking it again F 71

1  Insisted on by my doctor Varying degrees of pain in the esophyagus; hard to swallow. Bone exposure in lower right jaw which took three months to heal over. Continue to have gnawing pain in the lower jaw and general feeling of dissipation. Should never have taken it. Stopped taking it in Jan 2007. No improvement in hip or spine. Doctors prescibing it are negligent (or motivated by drug companies) and it is criminal to continue to the use of it. Are there any studies being done on followups? F 71 6 years

1  diagnosed with "osteopenia" Severe joint, muscle and bone pain in my left hip, thigh, leg and buttocks within 48 hours. Walking very painful and began limping like a very old woman. Could not sleep on my left side because of the pain. Shooting pain in my lower legs woke me up during the night. Has been 3 weeks since my first and last dose and still have pain, though not as severe. Very worried there will be some residual effects from one dose and pain may never go away completely. Caution everyone not to take even one dose of this without receiving a 2nd opinion. Many doctors have recommended NEVER taking Fosamax or a similar drug. Physicians need to warn patients of potential side effects (not just those appearing with medicine) so patient can make an informed decision whether to risk taking this drug (poison!). FDA should remove this drug from the market. F 71 1 days

1  osteopenia I take no other medications so know that Fosamax is the problem. I felt I was doing okay with this drug, but at precisely 5 months I am having pain in my upper legs and hips.......was at the store yesterday and was having trouble walking, one hip wasn't working correctly. I have an athletic background......this type of pain is new to me. And, of course, I don't know if the drug was doing any good for my bones. No more bone drugs.......I will have to rely on calcium, vitamins and exercise. F 71 5 months

1  Osteopenia 2 months after I stopped taking Fosamax due to severe muscle and joint pain, I still had no relief - so I saw my primary care physician (who prescribed the poison) only to be told that it is unlikely my symptoms are from Fosamax!!!! She has ordered blood tests to rule out other diseases but really does not believe me that all this started after the Fosamax, said it could be a coincidence that something else has occurred at the same time! I did not have any of this horrible pain and swelling before. I had my blood drawn and am awaiting the lab results - it may be a blessing to find out that my symptoms are from something that can be treated instead of these horrible side effects of Fosamax for which there is no treatment.
