FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Osteopenia Everyday I constantly felt sick. Flu like symptoms. My entire body ached especially the muscles in my legs. I couldn't walk at without throbing aching and cramping. I would like to ask all of the ladies who are taking this product to stop taking it immediately, even if you do not have symptoms. I believe it is a very dangerous drug for women and should be removed from the market immediately. F 59 9 months

Significant and frightening increase in TMJ (clicking and Another example of a drug that messes with the body's mechanisms to fix one problem while causing a lot more.  1  Osteoporosis After several years on Fosamax I started to experience extensive throat spasms, where I couldn't swallow and felt that I couldn't catch my breath. This problem would pass after a few minutes however was very frightening. On the advice of my doctor, I discontinued taking the Fosamax and the symptoms have cleared. However, now for the first time I have slight problem with acid reflux. F 59 5 years

1  Osteopenia Pain in lower back, hips; restricted movement of hips when walking; spasms in legs. I walked like someone 50 years older than myself. I had bursitis in my shoulder. I was on Fosamax for almost 3 years. I stopped taking Fosamax April 9th, 2006. By May 11th, 2006 my walking was back to normal, and hip pain decreased significantly. My doctor did not associate the pain with the Fosamax. I did my own research after I read an article about necrosis of the jaw. I realized that the pain was always worst four days after taking my weekly dose. I visited an orthopedic specialist May 26th, and after manipulating my joints, declared that the pain was due to the Fosamax. I'm glad I quite taking Fosamax. Every week I feel less pain.  1  osteoporosis Started taking Fosamax in 2002 and stopped in 2004 due to side effects. My doctor recommended that I try Actonel so in July 04 I started on Actonel and stopped taking it 2 months later because of stiffness in my hands, feet and legs especially upon waking in the morning. Had several blood test done to look for clues as to what might be causing this - all test came back normal. I have been off Actonel since October of 2004 and 1 year and 5 months later I can finally say that the stiffness and pain I was experiencing has finally subsided. I hope that I have not done any permanent damage to my health by taking these two drugs. F 59

1  Fractured femoral head from acciden Joint pain, muscle weakness, severe headaches, sores in mouth, "popping" of joints, exhaustion, insomnia I started taking Fosomax while recovering from a fracture of the ball joint of my femur. Initially I was making excellent progress healing. Four months into the Fosomax, I developed headaches and increasing joint pain. At the end of six months, I moved like I was 90 and could barely turn over in bed. I found this site when I "Googled" Fosomax side effects and was astounded at the number of symptoms that matched mine. I did not associate Fosomax with my increasing pain; I thought the pain was from my accident even though my doctor couldn't find a cause. I have been off the medicine 3 weeks, and feel 1000% better already. I can walk without (much) pain, the sores in my mouth are almost gone, and I am sleeping. I have always been active--snowshoeing, backpacking, kayaking, skiing. For the first time since my accident, I feel that I may be able to resume activities that are important to me. Fosomax would have ended all of that. I would not recommend this poison to anyone! F 59 7 months

1  osteopaenia Took Fosamax for about a year. Developed arthritis in thumb , which popped a lot, and a bump on the joint. Also had gastric pain.Quit taking Fosamax and after 3 months, the bump went away and the popping and pain. Gastric pain went away too. Unfortunately, I developed jaw pain and loosening teeth. I guess I'll have to wait many years for the Fosamax I took to wear off, since its half life is ten years. I'm happy that the thumb & gastric pains have gone. Am upping my daily dose of calcium and vitamin D. F 59 365 days

Could not use a pencil, peel a banana or hardly dress myself. Worst pain I've ever experienced. It's been 5 days, and still getting shooting pains in my hands. Horrible drug. F 59 2 weeks

1  osteoporosis Severe chest pain, nausea, vomiting, insomnia, fatigue. I had a heart attack at age 54 so the severe chest pain scared me. It appears that it is probably gastritis. I had vomiting daily while taking this medication. Sleeplessness because of intense discomfort in my upper chest and the left side below the breast. Loss of appetite. Fatigue. Stopped my cardiovascular workouts because I was too fatigued and felt like I was ill. I finally stopped taking generic Fossamax and after 4 weeks felt back to normal. I will not take this again.  1  Osteopenia In Feb. 2008 the World Health Organization (WHO) published its new Fracture Risk Assessment Tool (FRAX) to identify individuals at high risk for osteoporotic fracture. This new formula takes into account 11 other clinical risk factors besides BMD to calculate your 10 yr. probability of a fracture. PLEASE complete the on-line assessment form and show a copy to your doctor. (www.shef.ac.uk/FRAX or "Google" : FRAX) Also check out "Hotline: New NOF Guidelines and the WHO Fracture Risk Assessment Tool or FRAX" for more information. I refused to take any bisphosphonates despite the "urgings" of 3 different doctors over the past 2 yrs. According to the new WHO Fracture Risk Assessment Tool(FRAX) my 10 yr. probability of major osteoporotic or hip fracture is 0%!! I now have PROOF to show those doctors that I do not require "treatment" for my osteopenia. FRAX puts low BMD into perspective as only one of the many risk factors for fractures. This is small comfort to all those who have already suffered the horrendous side effects of unnecessarily prescribed bisphosphonates, but in the future it will spare many others the pain of unneeded treatment.  1  Osteopenia Ladies (and gentlemen), PLEASE google "FRAX" and learn all you can about the new NOF (National Osteoporosis Foundation) Guidelines and the World Health Organization's Fracture Risk Assessment Tool: FRAX. Complete the on-line assessment to calculate YOUR 10 yr. probability of a major osteoporotic or hip fracture. Then (this is the IMPORTANT part) tell any and/or all of the following about FRAX: your doctor(s), health care providers, pharmacists, the pharmaceutical companies that make bisphosphonates and other medications to treat osteoporosis, the FDA, health insurance companies, the news media, your family, friends and neighbors. P.S. Oh, and will somebody please tell Sally Field about FRAX, too! F 59 0 times

1  prescribed by dr for osteopenia I'm not sure if it is related to fosamax but did not experience any or these symptoms before. I have tenderness in upper back of mouth close to where wisdom tooth was. Jaws ache and pain sometimes under ears. Throat gets raw feeling at times. This comes and goes. It is very annoying. I stopped taking fosamax. After experiencing this discomfort, I did some research and learned about all the side effects of fosamax. I was on this drug for about 3 years. Anyone else have these symptoms? F 59

1  Diagnosed with Osteoporosis Severe hip, groin and leg pains. Stiff neck and pain in upper arms.Difficult rising from chairs after sitting.Feel as if there is a lump in my throat.Used to be very active-dignosed after breaking wrist playing badminton. My GP knew I was worried about taking Fosamax but he assured me there were no side effects. I now feel like a 90 yr old.I am aware that this drug has a half life of 10 yrs so I may never be free of these symptoms.I have had many blood tests and scans for various conditions but all are negative. I am convinced Fosamax is the cause. I live in the UK. F 59 3 years

1  osteopenia Explosive diarhea the first day, disoriented, drymouth, tingling lips, slight nausea, general feeling of malaise, head felt awful. I took my first of a weekly dose(70 mg.) on Tuesday morning. Wednesday the symptoms started. The diarhea discontinued after the first day but all the others continued until Sunday. I felt awful, as tho I was poisoned. For me, the "awful head feeling" was the worst part. I kept telling my husband that I felt terrible and to keep an eye on me. I will not take this again.
