FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  osteopenia I was not connecting the joint pain and spinal pain which has been gradually increasing to Fosamax until this morning I could hardly get out of bed for all the aching and decided to do a search for side effects on this drug. I have been seeing a chiropractor and it helps while I go somewhat but never goes away completely. I am on Fosamax for a year and a half but after reading user comments I am definitely stopping this drug. I was healthy except for bone loss and take NO other medications. I am so happy I found your web site!!!! I am going to continue to readup on latest advances, and take natural vitamins and minerals. I am just happy to know that my instincts about my own health are correct. F 66 1 days

1  osteoporosis eye pain with swelling, diarrhea. Eye pain started 4-5 days before the swelling happened. Hugh ulcer on lower portion of the eye- both top and bottom lids also swollen. Had MRI and it showed swelling next to the optic nerve. Doctors are calling it a pseudotumor and treating it with a 6 day course of steroids. I have never had eye pain like this before. I had just taken my fourth fosamax pill. In their leaflet they list one of the rare side effects being eye pain. Like many of you I will now try exercise, and vitamin supplements along with a better diet to improve my condition. I WAS taking the fosamax, 70mg plus D 1X a week for 1 month. NO MORE!! I understand to a certain point taking a drug to help with bone loss. But not when people are suffering worse effects. Why is it that the doctors are so ignorant about this medicine they so freely prescribe? Not one doctor in my state believes this condition could be from the fosamax. Are they all getting a kick back? M 66 4 times

1  beginning signs of osteoporosis Extreme pain in hip and thigh area, some pain in upper arms, feet. It is 2 a.m. and I am up researching the connection between my new pain and fosamax. The pain is too debilitating to allow sleep, even after 2 ibuprofin and a sleeping pill. What are our alternatives? F 66 1 months

1  Bone Density After 3-months on Fosamax,I experienced severe leg pain. I stopped taking Fosamax and 2-weeks later was pain free. The PA and the MD claimed I was the first patient who experienced leg pain from Fosamax! However, the MD listed "allergic to Fosamax" on a pre-surgery report to my surgeon. I spent two decades as an RN in an allergy clinic and never heard of leg muscle pain diagnosed as an allergic reaction. F 66 3 months

1  osteopenia Shoulder and neck pain. Gastric discomfort. Unknown if for sure are a result of fosamax. I am very concerned about the safety of fosamax and will not take it any more. I have written to Fox News requesting a program re: pros and cons of fosamax and actonel, both which they advertise. For copy of letter, send me an e-mail request. F 66 6 months

1  osteoporosis Recently diagnosed with osteonecrosis of the femoral condyle. Needed arthroscopic surgery to drill holes to try to get blood flow into the area. Will probably need knee replacement if this does not work. I feel that fosamax caused this. Over the five years I took it, there was no improvement in my bone density. F 66 5 years

1  Osteoporosis Right wrist began to pain about 10 hours after first dose. Had to take some aspirin before I went to bed. I woke about 1:30 a.m.with back pain. By 3:00 a.m. my whole body was in pain. Every bone in my body felt as if it were about to break. Even my ribs. Even my toes. I could barely move my wrist. I could barely get out of a chair. I felt as though an elephant was sitting on my chest. Every joint, every muscle was on fire. Next I developed severe stomach and intestinal pain. I spent the day swallowing a combination of aspirin and tylenol and hobbling around with my cell phone in my pocket in case I had to call 911. The pain subsided enough - with a little help from my pill bottle - that I was able to sleep last night and this morning it is not nearly as severe as it was yesterday. I have acid reflux. This experience has done it no favors. My hope now is that I will be one of the lucky ones whose symptoms from this horrid medication disappear quickly and do not linger for months Scary. The cure is worse than the disease. After reading comments on it here, I realize that for some of us, it doesn't even help the disease. F 66 1 days

1  osteopenia Vision refraction kept changing and I went through 4 changes in two years. Problems quit when I finally refused to take any more fosamax. It has been 10 years since I last took fosamax. In researching I found that it may have an 80 year half life! I was told today by a dentist that I have more bone loss than I should for my age. My jaws have been feeling tense like tension for over a year now. F 66 2 years

1  Early osteoporosis Noticed some discomfort after taking it for two months and stopped taking it. The doctor insisted I stay on it and that the discomfort would subside. Again the symptoms came back and this week I am crippled with pelvic, hip and thigh pain. Talked to my primary, who had not prescribed it, and he told me to stop it. He hopes I will feel better in 3 weeks. I am quite sick with flu like symptoms 7 days after taking last dose. I am a compliant patient. I will never be again. I pray for all of you out there suffering and glad I found this site. It is the first expression of honesty I have witnessed. Never again! F 66 4 months

1  Lumbar Fusion I had spent the previous 24 years T 6'1" and 174#. Over the past twenty years I have had two periods of being bedridden for 3 years each due to extreme swelling below the hips. My IQ dropped 37 points. Bad brain fog It caused jawbone death and frequent jawbone infectioons casing me to lose my molars twice, plus needing bone grafts bolted in place. This is a horrible drug. DON't TAKE IT!!! The main lesson I have learned is that Big Pharma should be avoided at all cost. Spend serious time on research for supplemements, other treatments M 66 3 years

4  Low bone density readings Little side effect. Only find that I need to be ready to go to bathroom between half an hour to an hour after taking, because it acts like a mild laxative with me. I will be watching the news on the problems others are experiencing and be ready to re-think taking Fosamax if I see any problems occuring in myself. One thing that I wonder about is whether the level of a person's activity may affect how the drug interacts within the body. I am a VERY active 65 year old (work in a daycare with toddlers) so imagine the drug has to be working through my system quickly and well. If people are not really active, but are able to be, perhaps they should consider that. F 65 1 years

3  osteopenia I have been taking Fosomax for over three years. I have experienced knee and hip pain as well as serious joint stiffness. I stopped taking it for two weeks, and the pain subsided somewhat. I resumed the 70 mg, anf lo, pain recurred. I am off of it. I have to take aspirin for the pain. It keeps me from sleeping at night, and I am so tired during the day. I am going to increase my calcium and Take more vit D. This isn't worth the pain, and I am only 65. I have read other comments, and it substantiates that Fosamax comes with risks. F 65 3 years

3  Osteopenia It has been 8 days since my last dose of generic Fosamax and my multiple pains are 85% improved...could this be coincidence..maybe I was going to get better or was it the Fosamax? I won't know unless I begin therapy again after a few weeks...my doctor would only laugh at me if I approached him/her with this.... F 65 10 years

3  Osteopenia Severe knee pain/inflammation, wrist and finger pain, hip pain - feels mostly like muscle pain. Knee xrays totally negative,no arthritis. Took brand name Fosamax first several years of treatment with improvement in bone density scans. Last several months have been using generic brand. Pain came on suddenly 1 month ago and is not improving much. I am going to stop Fosamax therapy and see if I improve. I'm happy to find out this COULD be a side effect and causing my pain.
