FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  osteoporosis I cannot believe the person saying "all these people reporting side effects just think it's from Fosamax and it's probably from something else"......surely you jest??? AND, this same person reports further bone loss after being on the drug for years, yet thinks it's been helpful! I have no doubt all these reports of terrible side effects are from Fosamax, and are very real. Another person reports broken leg, ribs and toe after being on the drug for years........................Hellooooo! NEVER will I take. I'll live with my osteoporosis and go the natural route and hope for the best. F 57 0 days

1  osteopenia Sudden back and hip pain with no warning I took Fosamax for 6 years with little or no symptoms until one morning it hit me and I could not get out of bed or walk with severe pain in my back and hips. What was a mystery to me was that I had done nothing to cause the back pain. I too first thought it was due to my age until I happened upon this site, and then all the pieces started falling into place and I remembered some of the other things that had happened that I dismissed as age related. One thing was my feet were sore when I first got up in the mornings and I could no longer wear my wedding ring. I did have a tightness around my breastbone like a feeling of heaviness, but did not experience the esophageal symptoms others have mentioned. When the pain in my back was so strong that I could not stand or walk and I was unable to turn over in bed because of the pain, I took myself off Fosamax and I am hoping this pain goes away entirely and I can be pain free again. It has only been 13 days since I took my last pill. I was very active and did yoga until this back pain hit now I feel like an old woman. F 57 6 years

1  prevent osteoporsis unexplained aches and pains Because of age and menopause, my OBGYN wanted me on Fosomax. I had no idea it could cause such terrible aches and pains. I couldn't walk, go up/down stairs, getting up from sitting. My doctor could not explain other than my weight and possible fibromyalgia. No pain remedy worked. After reading some other postings, I told him I was going to stop taking it. What a relief!! I have had a bone scan recently after being off for over a year and it is fine. I still do calcium & Vit D supplements. The only other problem I have encountered is tooth problems. I've had more dental procedures in the last three years than 25 years prior. I will fight not to have to go on anything like this again. F 57 3 years

1  spinal osteopenia, After 1 dose, had severe muscle & joint pain in shoulders, sternum, ribs, & spine Pain in sternum began within 10 hr. of the first dose. Awakened by back & neck pain that first night, & had trouble getting out of bed next AM due to severe rib pain. Sternum & ribs so painful it hurts to breathe normally. Noted weakness in leg muscles - difficulty arising from a kneeling position. Needed oxycodon to control pain enough to sleep. Now on Day 2 post-dose I have additional pain in hands and weakness in forearms. F 57 1 days

5  diagnosed with osteoporosis no side effects Within 2 years of taking Fosamax, I was upgraded to osteopenia in my hip. Within 3 years of taking Fosamax, I was upgraded to osteopenia in both my hip and spine. For the last year, I have been taking the generic for Fosamax with no apparent difference. I also have taken 1000-1200 mg of calcium citrate for 10 years. F 56 6 years

5  Severe Osteoporosis I have mild joint pain, but it is impossible to say that is from the Fosamax. I attribute it to the aging process and my strenuous exercise. I do need annual upper endoscopy because of a family history of cancer and it does show mild esophogeal erosions, so now I take Prilosec as a protectant. I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis in my forties, after ovarian cancer surgery (and, thus, instant menopause, with loss of hormones) and chemotherapy. The Fosamax has made an unbelievable improvement in my bones and I no longer have osteoporosis, but only some osteopenia. I wonder if there could be other reasons all these women experience such problems? I am afraid NOT to continue taking it! F 56 13 years

4  osteoporosis No side effects. Have been on it about 8 years now. Did switch from pill to liquid form, thinking that it might be easier on my stomach overall (never had stomach problems, tho). Bone mass has not changed much, but hasn't gotten worse, so maybe it did help. M 56 8 years

3  Osteoporosis I am the person who rated this drug and mentioned that I am taking Brewer's Yeast. I think I am going to stop this drug for 1 month and see how I feel. Has anyone found any safe alternatives to this drug or what have your doctors recommended. My endocrinologist at Duke University Medical Center indicated that he felt my symptoms were likely coming from the Fosamax. I will post again after stopping this drug for 1 month and advise what happens. I also have the muscle soreness now and when I get out of bed in the morning my feet hurt when I bear weight on them on the floor until I have walked a couple of dozen steps. F 56 3 years

2  Osteoprosis I am 56 and have taken Fosamax for about 6 years. I have recently felt that I have an 80 year old's health, rather than my own age. I have noticed in the last year that I have had increasing leg weakness. Knees hurt, thighs hurt. They often cause me to stumble and fall, on the merest hint of uneven ground, more and more often. This of course means I have more risk of broken bones. The very thing that Fosamax is supposed to be preventing!! I develped neck problems, which caused severe dizzyness problems 2 or 3 years ago and I still get dizzy attacks from time to time and neck pain all the time. Recently (last 5 months) I have had an extensive rash that took two months to clear, extreme fatigue continuously, attacks of diarreha, inability to shake a urinary infection, flu like symptoms on and off for months, worstening of the leg pains to the point of feeling that at times my legs will give out at any time, and stiffness in walking. I also had an stomach ulcer last year, that was sur With Fosamax I had osteoporosis that went down to osteopenie level, but now it is back to borderline osteoporosis again. And I have still had at least one broken bone per year. F 56 6 years

2  osteoporosis and osteopenia Taken Fosamax 70mg for about 1 1/2 years. For the last month and a half noticed I can not sleep on my right side. My jaw starts to ache to the point where I got headaches and also my whole left side was sore (felt as if it was inflamed). Also noticed extreme tiredness and exhausted feeling. About a month ago I felt pain on my right wrist. I am planning to see my doctor and want to quit this Fosamax. Am afraid of the jaw side effects. I do not know if my bone problem has improved as I am also taking a lot of other bone supplements (vitamins). F 56

2  Osteoporosis I have been taking fosamax for about 1 year, after a bone density scan revealed osteoporosis in the back, with no apparent side effects. However, about 2 months ago I noticed that the bottom of my right foot was tender. I also noticed that when I would bend down or squat (to play with my grandchildren) the area behind my knees was tender and would hurt terribly (especially the right knee) when I would stand up again. Then about 2 weeks ago (after always being active and healthy), I suddenly woke up one morning in pain and could not even walk on my right leg. It is terribly stiff, tender, and the pain and soreness seem to surround the knee area, and extend out to my leg and thigh. My sciatic nerve is also throbbing. I have noticed my back, shoulders and neck are starting to feel stiff and tender also. I thought at first maybe I was developing arthritis, though no typical arthritis medicines (aspirin, ibuprofen, even celebrex) seemed to make a difference. And exercising made it worse, not better. Then I thought it might be tendonitis. However, that didn't make sense either, as I had done nothing out of the ordinary with my leg. I suddenly wondered if it could be side effects from Fosamax (even though I have been on it for almost a year.) After looking at the warnings on the pamphlet enclosed with the drug, and researching on the internet (and finding this website, in particular), I am convinced that is the problem. I am going to stop taking it immediately, and hope to find relief soon. Now, however, I am wondering what to do as an alternative? I don't want to be a hunched over crippled old lady---but I don't want to be in pain either. F 56 1 years

2  osteopenia and osteoporosis In addition to lower back pain and muscle weakness in legs, I have noticed recently that I have developed bony growths in my fingers. Also I developed something in my mouth called Torus Mandibularis, which is a bony growth in my lower jaw. I'm just wondering if these bony growths have been caused by the FOSAMAX, since Fosamax encourages new bone growth. Reading all the reactions from people on this site, makes me scared to continue using this drug. I have had some minor improvement in my bone scan, but I wonder what the long term side effects are that are yet undiscovered. I wonder if anyone else has had bony growths on their hands or inside their mouths? F 56 17 months

2  Osteopenia/Osteoporosis I never had any side effects but found the timing of taking this medication then my other morning medication for thyroid disease annoying. I would have to wait nearly 2 hours before I could eat or drink my coffee. No improvement in my bone density ever. I recently stopped taking Fosamax based on my doctor's opinion as well as reading all the negative information that has recently come out. I didn't think much of this until today but I have had radiating pain from my left hip to my lower thigh every day for the past month and find that it is starting in the right hip. Now I am wondering if this isn't a side-effect of going off this drug and am horrified to find it stays in your body for so very long. I am overseas and wonder if I will be able to manage this pain on my own until I return to the States. I exercise all the time and have started doing yoga in hopes of alleviating the pain. Seems that Fosamax was a poor choice for me since it did not change my numbers, I broke my leg, ribs 3 separate times and a toe all after being on this drug for years! F 56 12 years

2  dr. strong recommedation. My Joints esp. knees became so painful and stiff I was taking codeine for pain. I realize my T score was -1.2,-1.6 but is all this aching necessary for a drug that is suppose to be helping me. I thing I will stop using it,and take my chances. F 56 2 months

1  osteopenia Have been taking fosamax about 12 weeks and sought this site out because of my suspicions about this drug; surely my 56 year old body was not going downhill this fast on its own! I am almost unable to wear my contacts due to dry eyes. While I have gone through spells of not being able to go to sleep in the past, lately, it has been just about impossible to fall asleep until about an hour or more has passed--- man, I am tired of being tired! I woke up at 2:30 the other morning with terrible pain in my right thigh-- I have had sciatic problems in the past before fosamax, but this was totally different. I seem to keep a stiff, uncomfortable neck. Today, I tuned into some general stiffness and uncomfortableness in my legs when starting to walk after getting up and today, I found myself rubbing and massaging my hands and fingers because things just did not feel right. After reading this, I am going to STOP before something worse happens. I want my eyes back and my neck to feel normal and F 56 12 weeks
