FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  osteopenia I started with itchy red spots on my lower stomach, feeling terrible, very tired.Acid relux really was acting up, and my stomach. Seen my Dr. twice and Nurse practitioner twice, they ran all kinds of blood test. I have gerd and take meds for that, but it was getting really bad, calves of legs ache, bloated stomach, even the bottom of my feet burn, I just all over feeling TERRIBLE. Well 2 weeks ago back to Dr. she said she really had no idea what was going on, they had ran many kinds of test and nothing was showing up. As we were talking again I mention how my acid reflux was so bad. A light came on, she said just a minute, she was going through my file, she said it's the Fosamax, stop it now. Well I can say I'm a little better, but still so tired, acid reflux is a little better, really don't even feel like eating, I just feel so sad. So words to you,DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE. It's not worth your life. F 63 2 months

1  osteoporosis I was taking fosamax however I started to get pain in my hips my legs by body ached all over , I felt very tired and nausea. I decided to stop the drug and my doctor told me to try using a weight vest instead of the drug he suggested the vest made by NYKNYC which is made for women with osteoporosis so I am now doing the weight bearing exercise and no more fosamax . Since I stopped the fosamax I am feeling better and since I have started with my nyknyc vest I feel so strong and I feel like my bones are getting better! Try the nyk vest instead of this drug fosamax. The vest is cute and it works! I stopped taking the fosamax and instead I got a weight vest for osteoporosis which i wear each day when walking and my doctor said the bones are getting stronger since I started the weight walking with my vest which is made by nyk for women with osteoporosis F 63 6 months

1  osteopenia I have been getting very sharp stomach pains up high between chest bone and also sharp abdominal pains that only come on after eating. I can tolerate oatmeal, rice and toast and experience no pain at all. I have lost 9 pounds in 3 weeks because of the pain when eating. My doctor took me off fosamax 2 weeks ago and I am waiting to see GI specialist. Also ended up in ER 1 month after starting fosamax because of irregular heart beat and near fainting. F 63 4 months

1  osteopenia I took the generic Fosamax about 1 year ago for 2 months and developed pain in hips and back so I stopped taking it. My DXA test showed some deterioration of density and so doctor put me back on the drug. After 4 weeks I again developed pain in hips and back. Also I have been treated for IBS for many years and I developed diarrhea after 3 weeks on alendronate sodium. I am stopping the drug and just going to do the best I can with calcium and vitamin D etc. F 63 30 days

1  osteoporosis I feel like every bone and muscle in my body aches. My lower back is always in pain. I get so stiff it's had to go about doing just about anything. I starting taking these because my t scores were 1.8 for hip, 2.4 for spine and 2.0 for neck. Which my reading up on the internet about osteoporosis, those scores were osteopenia not really osteoporosis yet. My doctor suggested that I take Fosamax, I had felt great before taking this medicine. I feel like I've aged in a matter of months. I don't know if I should stop taking at this point, I really don't want my bones to get worse. Hopefully something out there is better than this stuff. F 63 2 years

1  osteopenia I woke up with an excrutiating headache behind my left eye. Dx'd as sinus infection, took meds including steroids. As soon as I finished, the pain returned and my left eye swelled up twice it's size. Saw 6 doctors in 5 days including a neuro-ophthalmologist at Emory. Result - Fosamax caused the fat cells in my eyeball to inflame. Now on steroids for a month and should be fine. I'll take my chances with bone loss - I won't be taking any of these drugs again.  1   I suffer with severe pain in my abdomen when sitting. I've taken Fosamax for approx. 6 years. I have suffered for over 5 years with terrible pain in my abdomen. At times, I cannot even sit at all. I've been to my family physician wich the problem, who sent me to a GI doctor. Neither doctor found anything wrong after many, many tests. They finally ruled out colon cancer, stomach cancer, chrones disease, etc. but never knew what was causing my pain. The GI doctor has me taking probiotics in case it is bad bacteria in my gut (I fee this is the new "buzz word" in medicine. I've done that for 6 to 8 months and it hasn't helped at all. A friend told me about Fosamax and the possibility that it wss the source of my problem and suggested I try stopping it. It has only been 3 weeks since I stopped so it is too soon to know. I don't know how long it takes to get it out of ones system. Does anyone else know? Has anyone else had a similar problem? F 63

1  Spinal Stenosis and loss height Numb leg for 3days Numbness gone-had back xray showed spinal stenosis & slippage of vertebrae. My mother had this and osteoporis bad. I have lost about 3 inches in height. So Dr put me on fosomax after measuring vertebrae on xray. I started having right hip discomfort/pain in morning. It was like the joint was unstable for the first hour or 2 when I got up. Stopped taking it and it is almost back to normal. It started to get better first or second week without the med. I do take calcium and extra Vit D after they documented low level of Vit D. Won't take the medicine again. Too many complications. And I am a Registered Nurse! F 63 8 weeks

1  Recommended by physician Never took it. Low bone density is NOT necessarily a cause of fracture! Asians have low bone density and few fractures. Hi density does not protect against fracture. Fosomax & co. are drug industry hype. Everyone is being prescribed it and no one knows the long term effects, just like Estrogen--which it turns out causes cancer, heart attacks & strokes. Doctors are supposed to do no harm, but they are mesmerized by the drug companies who ply them with gifts and free samples and misleading studies. F 63 0 days

1  osteopenia I started taking Fosamax 11/04 and really thought I had no problems with it. However, starting in January of 06, I began having terrible sciatica. I could not walk or drive by March. It was diagnosed by MRI as a synovial cyst of L5 pushing on the sciatic nerve and I had physical therapy, acupuncture, 2 epidural spinal injections. Nothing worked. I had a foraminectomy 4/11 and surgeon said what he removed was a combination bone spur/synovial cyst. The pain was gone almost immediately, but I almost died anyway as the night of the surgery (outpatient) I had a seizure and was rushed to the ER with hyponatremia (low sodium) If they had not recognized what it was and treated it appropriately I would be a vegetable or dead. As it is, after 2 days in the ICU plus 2 more, I feel sort of OK, except during the 2 seizures, I chewed through my tongue and cannot eat/drink without pain still, although it will supposedly eventually heal. Before I had the surgery I wondered about the Fosamax and w One and a half years F 63

1  osteopenia I took it for 4 years before I figured out it might be related to hair loss, shoulder pain, and tinnitis. I finally stopped taking it last year because I had esophageal reflux, which got better as soon as I stopped taking the drug. I believe there will be many law suits in the future relating fosamax to esophogeal cancer - I would never take it again, and I'm sorry I ever did. F 63 4 days

1  Osteoporosis I have been taking Fosamax for 3 yrs 70mg. I have read material about Fosamax and ONJ. Now I afraid to take it that it may cause problems down the road. I don't think enough research goes into medications before they are marketed. Helps one thing, and kills another. More cases are of dental procedure problems being reported due to the use of Fosamax and the like. Who knows as time goes on there may be many more side affects. F 63 3 years

1  Osteoporosis of spine and hip After taking Fosamax for 6 years, I believe that it is the cause of dry eye and bone pain in my legs. I am extremely concerned about recent reports that Fosamax may cause painful decay of the jaw bone in people who take the drug and have dental surgery. I have stopped taking Fosamax. F 63 6 years

1  osteoporis After waiting for 2 yrs for another density scan there was no statistically significant improvement, even loss some bone mass on one side gained very little on the other. This drug did not prove to be doing its job for me. I called Coctor and told her I want off it. She said ok. Now I am supplementing with Calcium Carbonate/D. I never had osteoporosis pain to begin with, found out through Bone Density Scan. F 63 3 years

5  diagnosis of osteopenia None Thrilled with results. When I began, I had hoped, at the least, to prevent more bone loss. My spine has gone from borderline osteoporosis to being in the normal range; there has been annual improvement in my hip. The numbers for the femoral neck bone, though, have not been as consistent. I do weight bearing exercises daily and continue to take daily calcium and Vitamin D supplements, in addition to fish oil. F 62 5 years
