FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Osteoporosis Severe bone pain, nausea, headaches, exhaustion This is an update to 2 earlier postings. It has been over 6 months since I quit taking Fosamax and I still suffer the effects, just to a lesser degree. I have an ocassional good day, but they are few and far between. If anyone can let me know if you are symptom free and how long it took you to get there, please write. I get very despondent sometimes, because it is taking so long to recover. I was on it for 6 months, off for almost 7. Thank you. F 67 6 months

5  Signs of osteopenia None. Fosamax was prescribed because my bone density showed a weakness in one area and was considered osteopenic. My bone density has improved and shows all areas to be in the normal range now. My doctor recommended that I go off the drug for a year because of the possible side effects and then reevaluate a year from now. F 66 4 years

2  Weak Bone Density Acid reflux After breast cancer at age 46 and taking Tamoxifen for 5 years my mind and bone density suffered. I've taken 70 mg of Fosamax once a week for 14 years but my bone density has not improved above spine osteoporosis (T-score -2.5) and femur osteopenia (T-score -1.5). My general practitioner advised me to discontinue taking it because it could be in fact weakening my bones. I’m not sure what to do. F 66 14 years

2  Prevention of bone loss I took Fosamax for about three years and never thought about side effects. However, I developed a cough that wouldn't go away - and then terrible acid reflux. I had to sit up in bed in order to go to sleep. After reading these comments, I now believe that the stiffness I have been experiencing in my legs, hips and feet are related to Fosamax and I have discontinued it. Just visited with my doctor and she agreed that I should stop taking it and should begin taking Vitamin D. That's what I am going to do starting tomorrow! I am hoping that I will experience the relief which a number of people on this site have experienced. F 66 3 years

1  osteoperosis Severe pain in back, shoulders, chest muscles, ankles, knees, legs, jaw, wrists. Painful sciatic nerve. Painful scalp. Waves of disruption in thought. Waves of nausea. My GP prescribed Fosamax for osteoperosis. I protested because of the ambiguous results and he insisted. Prescribed one month dosage. One day after taking the medication I was awakened at 5: 00 AM by severe pain in left shoulder. I could not roll over and had difficulty getting out of bed. I managed to shuffle to the couch where I have been sitting and sleeping for four days now. I took Tylenol for the pain and it helps a little but not for long. I have pain all over my body. My body feels very hot and I have to sleep under a blanket . I cannot walk without help. I cannot lift my left arm. I have a shooting pain down my left hip and I think this is the sciatic nerve. I have a constant feeling of a shade being pulled down over the top part of my brain. Today the pain is lessened in the legs but, I have sore fingers and heel. The chest pain is so bad it hurts to breath deeply. I have never felt this bad or have been in so much pain in all my life. I have not called the doctor yet. I am so angry about his insistence on me taking this drug. Had I known about these possible side effects I would not have taked this drug. I am dreaming and wishing for a solution. Today is Monday, calling the GP later. If I never get over this pain then my life is ruined from this point forward. All, please be aware of the possibility it could happen to you. I will join in on any class action suit I hear about against this drug manufacturer. I am very hurt and angry and wish I F 66 1 days

1  Osteoporosis of femur After about 4 years of use, started having chest pains, or internal pains at about shoulder blade level, on an increasingly frequent basis. Also began having pains in knees at that time. Current symptom of right thigh pain may be related to all these years of biphosphonate use. Initially the chest-type pains were thought to be maybe heart problem, or gall bladder problem, or ulcers, etc. but no medical tests substantiated those hypotheses. When I switched from Fosamax to Actonel, the symptoms gradually disappeared. I was on Fosamax for 6 years, followed by 8 years on Actonel, and am currently on neither, for the last 2 months. For the six years I took Fosamax, my T scores for my left femur remained about the same, some years less than -2.5, some years a little better than that. I always took Fosamax on a daily basis, 5 mg dose. After learning about research studies suggesting that unusual low impact femoral fractures might be related to long-term biphosphonate use, and that some of those fractures were preceded by leg pain, I have stopped using Actonel and am hoping that I don't have a minor fall one day and find myself with a broken femur bone. I have kept good records of my 13 DEXA results over an 18 year period, and doctor's comments throughou F 66 6 years

1  Osteopenia I was concerned about the multiple side effects I had read about Fosamax on the internet and in the pamphlet. I even discussed the side effects with my pharmacist and my doctor. They both agreed there could be side effects and all of the side effects, such as severe jaw pain, were possible. After just one dose, the following day I experienced chills, fever, terrible joint pains, severe neck pain, and pain behind and in my ear. The pain was so severe I could not sleep, my head did not feel "right", my vision didn't seem right. I could not go to work that day as a result. The joint and jaw pain persisted all of last week. I did take Tylenol for the pain, which did help, but I had to take Tylenol every day. Yesterday, I took the second dose, today I again experienced fever, chills, stabbing pains in the right side of my head, which kept me from sleeping, jaw pain and an overall feeling of not feeling well. Although I only took two doses, (one a week for two weeks), I There needs to be additional research into this medication to see why so many patients are experiencing such severe side effects.  1  Osteoporosis Severe stiff neck with pain up back of head, lower back pain My symptoms came on 1 month after starting Fosamax. I reported symptoms to my MD and he assured me they couldn't be from the Fosamax but I could stop for 2 weeks and see if the symptoms went away. The pain lessened but did not go away completely so he had me come in for x-rays and said I had degenerative arthritis in my neck & lower back and wanted me to continue the Fosamax. After 6 months I quit again for 2 months and my lower back pain went completely away but I still had some neck pain so he told me to try the Fosamax again. This time the severe neck pain and lower back pain returned within one week of starting the Fosamax. My MD still does not believe that Fosamax is responsible for my pain but he has suggested that I stop again for a few weeks. F 66 9 months

1  osteoporosis Severe headache, muscle aches, pain in the legs so bad I could not sleep, nausea, pain in the ribs and back, hip pain, jaw pain I had taken one dose of Boniva 1 month prior to starting Fosamax and had worse symptoms with the Boniva, so I though a lower does of the Fosamax would lessen the symptoms. I was wrong. Same symptoms, increased pain. I felt fine before starting theses medications, now had felt terrible x 6 weeks! I cannot take this medication again. F 66 3 weeks
