FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

2  Ostoprosis Leg Pain and Back Pain. I would think about this drug before you take it. Seems Foteao may be a better option. I was in the first clincal studies for Didrnal which is the fore runner of Fosimax. I started this drug in 1990 and stayed on it until 2008, I came off of it for 2 years and then had to start again as my t-scores dropped like a rock. The second time around I belive this drug is causing all my issues of late with back pain so severe its debilitating. I am stopping this week to see if the pain improves for me. M 59 3 months

2  -3.25 hip osteoporosis A severe burning, stinging sensation in my buttocks and hips, that makes sitting for long periods of time or lying on my back or side very painful. I also experience aching in my legs. I have been on Fosamax for nearly 3 years and have been on the generic version for about a year. I started to research the drug because I'm about to undergo a dental procedure and I know that one of the side effects could be bone loss in the jaw resulting from improper healing after undergoing dental procedures. When I started to research the side effects, I found this site. I have never experienced any of the bloating or esophagial problems that some users describe, but there appears to be many different and serious side effects. I had not associated my buttock and hip pain with Fosamax until I read that many women have experienced the same symptoms. Also, I just had a bone density test, and there has been no improvement in my bone mass since starting Fosamax. I have decided to stop taking the drug, and hope that my symptoms will improve.  2  osteoporosis The first (and only) time I took generic alendronate was on 4/24/11. I took it on an empty stomach at about 11:30 a.m. and didn't eat until about 4 p.m. At about 11 p.m. the same day, pain developed in my left shoulder/upper arm and left wrist. By the next morning, I was nauseated and very fatigued. I also had a headache that was primarily localized in my left temple/forehead, with at least one blood vessel visibly protruding beneath the skin. The arm/wrist pain and the nausea were gone by that evening, but the fatigue persisted for a day. The headache persisted for at least two days. I plan to discuss my apparent reaction to alendronate with my doctor, but will NOT take another 70 mg dose in any event. (I would advise others against starting this medication at a dosage of 70 mg.) Because I still have osteoporosis, I MAY ask about the possibility of starting with a small weekly alendronate dose (initially 10 mg?) and increasing it incrementally to a level that still does not cause a reaction.  1  osteoporosis Severe stomach pains for the past year on and off and progressively got more often (5-6 times per week), severe constipation and bulging in my fingers... There is NO relief with my pain which is mild to severe to excruciating (best way to describe it is a waving and burning). There is nothing I can do other than wait it out. It can take anywhere from 1/2 hr up to 6 hours. I get very little sleep as it wakes me up before it even gets bad. My husband unfortunately doesn't get much sleep listening to me cry and move around from the bed, to the toilet and the floor.......I have been through numerous tests and lots of money, and every test was negative. It's a nightmare and just want to die when it reaches its peak... F 59 3 years

1  osteoporosis Took the first dose less than one week ago....nauseous for first few days (felt like being pregnant), now ache in chest, arms, neck, back. I will NOT take the second dose tomorrow, and will be calling the doctor. I have NO health problems other than this recent diagnosis of osteoporosis. I am athletic and very active. I should not even drive as it hurts to move my head from side to side. F 59 6 days

1  Osteopenia SEVERE pain in right hip that radiates to thigh, calf, under the knee, and buttock. Can no longer shop more than about 10 minutes and then can barely get into car because of the pain in the hip. I took Fosamax for three years (as prescribed by my gynocologist) & never associated the pain with the med. As I look back, the hip & associated pain gradually increased over time. My bone density tests were not showing improvement--actually getting worse (& I have done weight-bearing exercise 5 days/wk for 8 yrs & take calcium and Vitamin D). My primary care dr told me last yr to get off the medicine because it's bad for you so I did in May 2011. My hip still was extremely painful. I went to an orthopedic dr who said I had bursitis & sent me to physical therapy. It got worse. I had two cortisone shots in my hip--no relief. I went to Mayo Clinic to have it diagnosed. The dr there said I had no signs of arthritis & he wished he had an MRI that looked as good as mine. He could not figure out the cause of my pain and scheduled me for an injection guided by ultrasound to try to relieve the pain. Before I went in for the injection, my pain miraculously stopped (Oct, 2011). Then I went to my gynocologist for a wellness exam in Oct who said I was 0.1 away from osteoporosis & needed to get back on the medication. She prescribed a new one--Altevia. I resisted taking it until last wk (Mar, 2012) when I became worried about the risks of osteoporosis and took the first pill. That night, the hip pain was back as bad as ever & it's now a week later & the pain is getting worse. I finally have made the connection between the drug and the p F 59 5 years

1  Osteopeania I took Fosamax Saturday morning, Nov. 26, 2005. I experienced gas and acid reflux. Then during the night I had flu-like symptoms, including bloating, muscle pain, headache, nausea and diarrhea. When I got up at 3:30am, I had a feeling of pins and needles over my whole body and a fever. I had a fever of 99.9 until noon the next day. I took 2 Advil Sunday morning and 2 Advil Sunday evening for the incredible back, chest and neck pain. It is Monday and the chest & back pain continues. I have a call into my doctor. I do not want to take another pil. F 59 1 days

1  Osteoporosis Began with Actonel. Felt poisoned. Doctor switched me to Fosamax. Still felt poisoned only started having acid reflux, difficulty swallowing. Stopped Fosamax. Doctor said try Boniva. Are you kidding? Did not tell him I had stopped Fosamax and never filled Boniva. Probably will not tell him I am not taking these meds as he intimidates me. Do not take this drug. Not proven safe. None proven safe. We are drug companies guinea pigs. F 59 12 months

1  Second try, after Actonel. I posted today, this is second posting 9/22/06. Will post again after doctor visit 9/25/06 when I drop bombshell that I will not take these drugs. As a postscript, I am not sure if I still am having side effects. I quit taking the drugs probably 6 months ago and still have occasional acid reflux and occasional flu like symptoms. I wonder if they will go away and if they are because the drugs are still in my system. F 59 12 months

1  osteopenia SEvere low back pain. Difficult to get out of a car, chair or bed. Tried physical therapy and acupuncture. Nothing helped. Took for 2 1/2 years. NEVER AGAIN From what I have read, this should be used for people with cancer in the bones, not mild osteopenia. F 59

1  ostepenia first I had sciatica in muy left leg, then it moved into my hip and became trochanteric bursitis, which my dr gave me a cortisone shot for (didn't help) I also had tennis elbow at the same time and tinnitis, all on my left side. I've been on it for a year, and had these symptoms for 7 months. today i went to the dr and told her about this website, and she agreed i should go off the fosamax just to see if my symptoms dissapear. she seemed to think that it would take a couple of weeks for any residue to leave my body (but I wonder how long) I've been sleeping on my back with a pillow under my knees, because I cant sleep on either side, it's too painful and my legs go numb. I also had a thin pillow under my left arm that seemed to ease it a bit. sitting makes it much worse, have been putting icepacks on my hip and taking ibroprophin, and i read today in the pharmacist handout that iboprophin is not a good thing to take with fosamax. (it says additional monitoring of your dose or condition may be needed if you are taking nonsteroidal anti inflammatory medicines such as ibuprofen or naproxen. F 59 1 years

1  osteopenia Starting gradually I experienced more and more severe muscle pain around my hips and knees. By the time I stopped taking it I had gone from an unusually young 59 to a hobbling old woman. I've been off the drug for 2 weeks and have seen only a mild change for the better. I can only hope a complete reversal of my symptoms is possible. I am shocked and angered that patient complaints about this drug have been so blithely unheeded by doctors. I'd like to have some medical explanations for my symptoms. What has this drug done to my muscles that has caused so much pain? Is this a reversible condition? There must be thousands of women and men suffering. F 59 10 months

1  Osteopenia I've been taking it off and on for about a year. I'd skip a week just to see if I felt better and I did. I have acid reflux, feel like my chest is on fire, and feel like I have the flu..............there must be another choice? I tried Boniva once, and that took me a month to get that out of my system. No MORE !!! I exercise all the time. I do not smoke. Drink socially, take my calcium every day and Vit. D and Magenisum. I really believe bone loss is just a part of aging. My Mother and Grandmother never took a drug for bone loss. My Mother does have osteoprosis, but was a lifetime smoker and soda drinker, never took calcium nor exercised. She's 85 and still kickin'. My Grandmother lived to be 79, never had a bone problem. F 59 11 months

1   aching muscles, stiff joints, heartburn While taking this drug I became so stiff and sore I felt 80 instead of 55. I went to two specialists about pain in my shoulders but they could not find a problem. When I began experiencing heartburn, I thought about Fosomax and read about side effects and immediately quit taking the drug. I still have the aches and pains but not as severely. I rarely experience heartburn anymore. I continue to exercise regularly (as I had been when I was taking Fosomax) and hope that someday this stiffness and pain will be gone. I am now 59 & have been off Fosomax for at least a year. Can anyone offer me encouragement that I will feel better? F 59 3 years

1  osteopenia On a scale 1-10 my shoulder and left arm below the shoulder is unbearable pain. It felt like someone pulled the muscle away from the bone or a horse kicked me. I lost all strength in my left arm. I have to use my right hand/arm to move the left. I had damaged my left shoulder (rotator cuff) a few years ago and with a short period of Celebrex and Ultraset was able to heal the problem with only a flare up once in awhile when I would over use the shoulder. I began taking Fosamax in August, my left shoulder flared up again and the pain has been unbearable and my muscle tone in that arm has diminish significantly (from use 40 pounds weight to no weight, just the movement of the exercise machine). I too felt like I was very old and at 59 felt things looked bleak to maintain my home, be athletic, pick up grandkids...The Celebrix and Ultraset doesn't give me the relief it did before Fosamax. And I will be seeking a new doctor, one that won't be pushing meds. He had me on HRT and nearing 2 years I had bleeding and had endured 6 months of bloating and discomfort. After I had the bleeding, I immediately grabbed my Progestrone and slathered that, threw away the HRT and within a day the bloating and pain went away. Now the Fosamax which has diminished my quality of life will be gone. I plead that it has not damaged my body and I'm upset that I let the doctor make me feel like I am a jerk for not running and buying drugs that I don't think I should be taking. I'm 59, I bike 20 miles on a trail each Monday, Hike in trails 4 days a week, maintain a sculpted yard, golf, 3 times a week do weights at a health club. I plan on reading the Gillian Sanson book, I F 59 5 months
