FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Osteoporosis Headaches, Stiff neck, Burning & Blurring eyes, Left jaw pain, Bloating, Unexplained Gas, Painful & Swollen Thumb joints, Fatigue Having gone to the Dr. with my husband regading his blurred vision I was made aware of the side effects of Fosamax. My husband had been & had all the necessary eye checks but was told his sight vision had not changed. Then to our Dr.& after consutation was told to stop taking Fosamax for a month. I then found your website for which I am very grateful. I have been on Fosamax for 3yrs now & slowly my health seems to be deteriating. Having had all checks possible I am told I am fit and healthy person & I have always felt & looked much younger than my age. I then started putting my symptoms down to my age. At present I sometimes feel at least 10 yrs older than I am which in turn starts to get a person down. These symptoms all came on slowly so was harder to detect. My Optometrist has now told me I have premature ageing in one of my eyes. I have worn glasses for about 15yrs for reading but only needig them adjusted about every 5 yrs. 2 1/2 yrs ago there was no change, th F 74 3 years

4  Osteoporosis/hyperparathyroidism No side affects. Feel good on it. I hope everyone with osteoporosis asks their doc to do a calcium and parathyroid blood test (done at the same time) to determine whether their osteoporosis is caused by hyperparathyroidism. This is usually caused by ae small not cancerous growth on the parathyroid (not thyroid) gland. When removed , the osteoporosis is usually reversed. F 73 4 months

1  osteoporosis I took two pills of the 70MG Version. I developed burping, stomach fullness, neck, hip and muscle aches. this is bad stuff. I decided to stop taking this drug. Why they would ever have this drug on the market is the question. All the drugs I have taken has given me side effects that were undesirable. I read if one smokes or drinks achohol or coffee it will reduce the amount of calcium that is transferred to the bones. I will quit these vices and take magnesium, vitamin D and calcium sterate. I hope this will help. M 73 2 weeks

1  Osteopenia Muscle stiffness. Felt very old, hard to get dressed. Blurring of vision and tearing. Have spent a lot of time, money and effort trying to figure out what was wrong. The light dawned two days ago when Amy throat closed up, got very sore and I began coughing. I am only hoping that I can recover now that I'm not taking it anymore. Would be interested in knowing what others experience has been with recovery. F 73 10 months

1  osteoporosis I have been on Fosamax for four years. In that time I had four compression fractures. Three of them since July of 2008. Horrible bone pain in the lower legs that woke me up at night and would only go away when I walked. I lost a lot of sleep! Heartburn, racing heart and cramps in my feet. These all went away when I quit taking Fosamax. I quit in November of 2008. Been on for four years and it did me no good!! F 73 4 years

1  low bone density test severe muscle and joint pain, headache After 3-1/2 months taking once-a-week Generic Fosamax, I like many others, got up with a pain in my neck and thought I was sleeping wrong. Within a few days, I could not lift dishes into the cupboard as my upper arm muscles were so sore. Then it hit my legs, it hurt to walk, hurt to turn over in bed. I stopped taking the generic Fosamax and called my Dr. I took numerous lab tests for any muscle/inflammation/disease. All were normal. He was puzzled and had not had a patient with this problem. I don't take any other drugs, just a multi-vitamin, calcium/D and Omega 3 fish oil. He gave me Darvocet for the pain, which made me sick. Just as well, the FDA has taken it off the market! Extra strength Bayer aspirin helps a little. After 9 months, there's been a little improvement but I'm far from normal. I think this is a horrible family of drugs and our problems are not made public enough. I've reported by situation to the FAD/Medwatch, for whatever good it will do. I suggest you all do the same. Here is the voluntary web site: https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/medwatch/medwatch-online.htm If enough of us make them aware what it does to us, maybe they'll take action. I hope so. I'll never take it again. F 73 3 months

1  Long term steroids None for the first 1 and 1/2 yrs. I was put on steroids for an autoimmune disease....at the time the Dr. thought the steroids would be for a couple of months. When he saw that I would be on them longer he Rx'ed the Fosamax. My bone density at that time showed osteopenia. To make a very long story short.....in the end I was on the steroids for 2 yrs. and the Fosamax for 23 months. As I was tapering down off the Prednisone I gradually became aware of joint pain and muscle weakness. And as the Prednisone dosage became gradually lower and lower the pain and weakness became worse and worse. At the time I thought it was coming from the decreasing anti-inflammatory dosage....not the Fosamax! After reading and researching this drug I am sure the Fosamax is the cause. Three months ago I told my Dr. I was not going to take it any more. I was able to stop the Prednisone in Nov. and stopped the Fosamax early January. The pain and weakness is not one bit better and I'm now at the point where I wonder if I will ever be normal again!!! I can't get out of a chair or off of the john without pushing myself up (it is a real struggle!) because the muscles don't work and it is painful to stand up!! This is, I am convinced caused by the Fosamax. I am truly scared that I may never be normal again as far as agility. I predict that the FDA will eventually take this drug off the market as there seems to be a LOT of us that have the same debilitating side effects. And I have read that Fosamax stays in your body for 10 year F 73 2 years

1  osteoporosis Burning sensation in GI tract. Its competitor--Actonel is just as deadly to your bones. It stops bone growth, leaving you with old, brittle bones. You are not eligible for a dental implant, because the bone is unable to grow and secure it. Read Building Bone Vitality. It's an evidenced approach to bone health. It's a dietary approach. Cites lots of research from scientists. F 73 3 months

1  Osteopenia I have occasional atrial fibrillation (AFIB)which terminates spontaneously and occurs only about once a month. There is no underlying heart pathology. After taking Fosamax for only 3 weeks, I had a 25 hour AFIB episode. Now, three days later, I am still having ectopic ("skipped") heartbeats. My cardiologist told me to stop taking the drug. It is important to note that I have never encountered such symptoms before taking Fosamax. If you have atrial fibrillation or susceptibility to it because of hereditary factors, I would suggest strongly that you stay away from Fosamax. I certainly will. M 73 3 weeks

4  Very poor bone density scan at 68 Only suffered severe pain with 70mg dose (before I was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia and medicine to deal with this) - put back on daily 10mg - no indigestion. Have experienced some muscle and joint pain. After initial bone scan showed poor bone density, prescribed fosamax; next scan 5 years later resulting in 14% increase in spinal bone density and 12% in hip density. I have experienced some joint pain and back spasm and loose bowel motions, but I have IBS anyway. I recently had a ligament problem at the base of the thumb on my left hand, and my right hand index finger has produced an arthritic knob on the second knuckle from the tip. The specialist report from the scan recommended continuing with the drug. I have a hiatus hernia and a history of acid reflux before taking medicine to block stomach acid (Losec 40mg daily). I have had no problem whatsoever with reflux or digestion with the 10mg dosage. I shall now experiment going off the drug for 3 months and monitor myself. If I feel better, I shall consult my doctor about something else to deal with potential osteoporosis. If it is of any interest I had a very late menopause (58 years old) and have never been tempted to take F 72 5 years
