FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  osteopenia Severe stomach pains, nausea and vomiting for several hours after I went to bed at night. I took my first dose of Fosamax at 11:00 AM and felt OK. I went to bed after midnight and by 1:30 AM began having stomach pains. Soon I became extremely nauseated and began vomiting. I didn't feel any relief until I emptied the entire contents of my stomach. The ordeal lasted approximately 2 1/2 hours. I was exhausted the following day. My doctor thought it was unlikely that the cause was Fosamax. I can't think of any other cause. F 70 1 days

1  Osteopenia First week diarrhea commencing 2nd day after 1st dose. Second week ongoing diarrhea, lack of appetite and nausea severely impacting the quality of my life. Now have flu like symptoms, chills and fatigue. I’ll be meeting with my clinic on call physician ASAP tomorrow and refuse to take the 3rd dose of this vile medication. I’ve benefited from the personal experiences and less medicalized suggestions from other reviewers. I intend to explore Vitamin D, K, fish oil and exercise alternatives. Sadly $ out the window.  1  Osteoporosis Severe joint and muscle pain in knees. Knees feel swollen inside. My knees hurt so bad they felt like they broken. I used to walk everyday, now I'm lucky if I can get to the restroom. Lots of pain. Very bad drug. Doctor's say it's not the fosamax and must be something else. They need to take this drug themselves to understand what we are going through. Will these symptoms ever go away? They need to ban this drug. F 70 3 months

5  Osteoporosis None I have taken the daily for 14 years and I am in good health and look much younger than my age. I am on tennis teams, swim every day, walk, and ride my bike several times a week. My teeth are excellent. My bone density tests each time have shown improvement to the extent I was able to stop Fosamax two weeks ago. I will get another bone density in two years and if I back track I will start it up again. F 69 14 years

5  osteoporosis occasional mild flu like symptoms Normal bone scan after 2 years. I'm a retired RN. I find most doctors are knowledgeable and well intentioned. The key is to find a doctor you trust. After 40+ years of nursing I depend on the extensive knowledge of a good M.D. to point me in the right direction and to interpret the copious studies out there for me.I find the frequent mistrust of doctors to be very sad as it does get in the way of good medical care for people. I know the many years of study they put in and I would only trust my very valuable health(and life) to a good doctor-not to my own opinion or that of friends or family. After all we have only one life so let us have the most expert person care for us -and that is a competent doctor. Others may (and will) disagree but as I say this is speaking from 40+ years working as a critical care nurse in many large teaching and private hospitals. You owe it to yourself to get the most accurate advice possible. F 69 4 years

2  osteopenia none that I noticed. I found that having to take it in the morning and stay up for half an hour and not have even a cup of tea was an aggravation. I have no way of knowing whether it helped, but when I found that most women my age have osteopenia, and after finding through reading that my risk for osteoporosis was very low, I discontinued taking it. I was afraid of interactions with all the other meds I'm on. F 69 2 days

2  Tibial fracture, low bone density I have experiened moderately severe thigh pain for years---probably since starting taking Fosamax 7 years ago. I also have had L hip pain, but this is helped by glucosomine and chondriton. I have moderate knee pain also. I ache at night and the pain wakes me up. Walking after sitting is difficult and painful. Walking is improved after a dozen steps or so. Stretching my muscles does help relieve the pain, for some reason. This discomfort is gradually getting worse as time goes on. I've also had a salivary stone removed, plus xrays show spur formations on various joints. The bottom of my right foot has started tingling and acting like its falling asleep. I have complained to my doctor before and he has more-or-less just shrugged his shoulders. I plan to discuss with my doctor switching to Evista or something other than a biophasphonate when I see him in November (06). I agree, this site is great. F 69 7 years

2  decreasing bone density I have been taking Fosamax for 2 1/2 years, 70mgs once a week for the last two years. In 2004 I had a bone loss of 6%, 2005 a loss of 10.7% besides taking 1200mgs of calcium and 400mgs of Vit D also eating a diet high in fruits, vegetables and moderate dairy products. I do water aerobic 3x's per week as well as gardening and general housework etc.The past 7 months I have had increasing pain in my knees, lower back, neck and shoulders also muscle weakness, have felt bodily tired which is relieved by lying down rather than sitting. Extremely stiff on arising in the mornings which wears off after 5 mins. of movement but generally ache and feel restriction of movement. I am awake several times during the night from discomfort, needing to change position because of aching. I am age 69 and have been very active and athletic all my life. I stopped taking Fosamax two weeks ago and will see my doctor this week. I do not know what to do about the bone loss but tend to feel Fosamax is contributi I do not know if Fosamax is contributing to my aching joints and muscles and even the decrease of bone density but I am stopping it to see if the condition improves.  1  Osteoporosis Extreme hearturn/heart attack symptoms I have just self directed myself to never take Fosamax again.Am willing to deal with osteoporosis symptoms after reading 50 pages of comments.Took Actonel 40 mgs/1 year/had no problems. Medicare refused to cover Actonel, doctor suggested Fosamax 70 mgs/2week test/switched.On 47th day, suddenly had extreme chest tightening warm pain-traveled slowly from bottom of my esofagus up to jawbone.I thought I was having a heart attack even though I had just had thorough cardiac work up including nuclear stress test two weeks prior. I called my doctor/told me to immediately go to ER room for heart attack symptons even though pain lasted 5 minutes. After 5 hours ER tested everything possible, couldn't find anything/suggested that I take Prilosec for heartburn!I am 69 years old, healthy, never had heartburn!! Merck lists all the warnings.I have had many more "negative symptoms of Fosamax" that I never tied to Fosamax before reading all the comments (cramps, gas, bloating etc) Merck thinks t F 69 47 days

1  osteoporosis Extreme muscle and bone pain, depression, eyesight was getting very bad, I was choking on even a glass of water, was not sleeping and now I am having trouble with my jaw and some of my teeth, even though I have stopped taking it. The side effects I am told are permanent. This stuff is poison and should be taken off the market immediately. How many people have to have their health ruined before it is stopped. F 69 2 years

1  BONE DENSITY TEST RESULTS Severe acid reflux conditions with esophagus damage, aching joints, lost strength in my hands, bloating in mid section, pain and swelling in gall bladder, miserable way to live. I was feeling good and experiencing good overall health when my doctor took a bone density test and put me on Fosamax. The first several months I had no apparent side effects, then little by little started having stomach and esophagus problems, other side effects as listed. I took Fosamax 6 months and have been off of it for 3 months. I have been miserable for those three months, but am slowly recovering by a very selective diet, lots of herbal tea and taking medication for acid reflux. Before taking Fosamax I had never experienced acid reflux or any significant digestive disorders. In my opinion, Fosamax is a dangerous drug and should be taken off the market. F 69 6 months

1  osteoprosis Stomach ulcers that eroded and caused severe bleeding from an artery close to stomach. Also severe swelling in both legs whic turned bright red and developed massive blisters that burst and drained for two weeks. I would never take this drug that almost killed me again. Very dangerous. I ended up in the intensive care unit at hospital from severe bleeding from stomach ulcers that eroded close to an artery. Blood prssure dropped so low that I flat-lined. Had to be given 6 pints of blood. Legs are still very painful from the huge blisters that they had on them. Unable even to stand up at the time and am still in the hospital and don't know for how long. This medicine is very dangerous and almost killed me.... F 69
