FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  Osteoporosis/Osteopenia I took Fosamax monthly for approximately 7 years when diagnosed with osteoporosis in left femur area. Subsequent Bone Density tests showed improvement (osteoporosis to osteopenia) in one year and scans remained stable with some slight improvement each scan. When spontaneous fractures of the femur were noted in medical journals, I discontinued Fosamax for one year (to take a break). I decided to resume treatment, this time with once monthly Boniva. Recently, I developed significant discomfort mid-chest with some feeling of fullness to the throat area. I had no stomach pain, no regurgitation of acid. Because the discomfort was happening more than two or three times a week, I started Pepcid 15 mg. twice a day (per doctor's orders), as I'm sure I've developed an esophageal issue as the result of treatment. I did not renew my March Boniva and plan to discontinue any of these drugs in the future. After all these years without any esophageal problems, I have now developed this issue. F 68 7 years

1  mild osteopenia I only took one pill and was in extreme muscle and joint pain all over my body...worse pain than gout that I had once. The pain lasted the entire week. Refused to take any more and one year later I am still dealing with muscle and joint aches and pain. Never had these pains before. I also have some generalized muscle weakness. F 68 1 days

1  osteoporosis Moderate joint and muscle pain on getting up from couch;pain in calf muscles for several steps. Seemed to get worse when I had to begin Tamoxifen. Have changed to Boniva and joint and muscle pain has almost disappeared. Had no GI symptoms. No jaw bone destruction. I believe Boniva (once a month) is a better choice for osteoporosis and the monthly dose being spread out probably helps with GI symptoms. I would not recommend Fosamax as it has bad side effects and seems to react adversely with Tamoxifen in causing joint and muscle pain. F 68 7 years

1  Osteopenia Muscle aches, dental problems, back pain, tingling in feet and toes, fatigue and more fatigue. Depression worsening. My tests have been normal.....no one believes me. I'm getting very depressed and Isolated. I have been an extremely healthy and STRONG woman. Now I question my ability to take care of the simple tasks of daily living. Also worried that I may be permanently disabled. If anyone knows where I can go for some advice it could be a life saver. F 68 4 days

1  osteopenia Thank goodness I found this website; now I know why I was experiencing such pain in my left hip and lower back, and trying to roll over on my side in bed brought tears to my eyes as the pain was excruciating. After sitting in a chair for 30 minutes or so I was so stiff in my hips and back that I had great difficulty standing upright. I felt like I was 90 years old. I had been taking Fosomax for about 18 months and during this time the pain came on gradually so I did not attribute it to the Fosomax. However, after reading all the comments on this site I stopped taking Fosomax almost three months ago and I am pleased to say that I am almost back to normal, with very little pain in my hip, and none at all in my back. I still take calcium tablets and Vitamin D for bone health and will continue to do so. I now assume my aching bones were due to Fosomax. F 68 18 months

1  osteoporosis Bloody noses, sinus problems, shoting eye pain, severe blood shot eyes, numbness in my toes, calf pain, lip and eye twitching, neck pain, muscle pain. I also take a blood thinner along with FOSAMAX; I have spent many night in the Emergency room trying to stop the hour long nose bleeds, nobody ER docs, my general physician have been able to tell me why I am getting them, I believe it is the FOSAMAX, because they started several weeks after I stared taking it. I also believe that the other health problems that I have been experiencing is due to this drug. I will no longer be taking FOSAMAX. Thank you all for your ratings and your reasons and the side effects that you have reported, I thought I was going crazy. F 68 5 months

1  osteporosis misdiagnosed with celiac disease; severe sciatica, lower backpain;"scar tissue" found during colonoscopy;vaginal spasms; increased heartrate diagnosed as anxiety attacks; lingering, unexplained pain with recent root canal. Horrifying. In the same category as Vioxx and HRT tragedies the drug companies have dealt us. Would give anything to have followed my instincts not to take it for a year, 8 mos. The worst part is how little doctors know about it and thus are not relating symptoms they are seeing to this drug. It is my hope the dentists will finally come through for us, as they did with the Aides Epidemic, and raise the alarm. As of now, my dentists have been told that only one case of osteonecrosis has been reported of a patient who had not been on cancer therapy. Very, very doubtful. Tne ENT I went to to see if my jaw pain after the root canal was sinus related knew nothing about Fosamax. The last I heard, from my dentist, Fosamax stays in your system for ...........13 years.  1  osteopenia After taking fosomax once weekly for four months, I started to experience some tightness in the middle of my chest with no reason for it. Just sitting watching TV or driving and the pain would grip me. Lasted several seconds. Left me with the feeling that I wanted to "burp". No burning or indigestion, but a very heavy feeling in my middle chest. Have stopped taking it today. Also, am experiencing pain in the neck that was never there before. Will not continue even if DR. advises Try to help yourself naturally - Calcium with D and 30 minutes of easy walking or walking in place with a 30 minute tape in front of the TV. Helped my legs and stamina. F 68 4 months

1  osteopenia/spine, osteoporosis/hips During the one year I took Fosamax, I developed severe (and now chronic) pain in my neck, shoulder, upper back and upper arm, all on one side. It wakens me every night. The pain is stabbing and sometimes burning. My MRI shows minor arthritis in the neck. I had no pain prior to taking and now pain taken taken over my life. When I questioned my doctor as to whether Fosamax may be involved, he said to keep on taking for my bone health. I am now changing doctors and will see the new one in 10 days. I have been off Fosamax now for 3 weeks and still don't have relief. The pharmacist says it has F 68 1 years

1  Osteopenia Although it can't be proven without more investigation, I recently removed myself from Fosamax when reading a medical article recently advising that Fosamax was cited as causing atrial fibrilation in some patient. Having been diagnosed with A.Fib about four years ago, I decided that this may be connected to the Fosamax. Since the end of April when I quit taking this drug, I have had very little episodes of A.Fib - at least a 90% drop in symptoms. I don`t think this is a coincidence. I would like to hear if anyone else is currently in this situation. Fosamax provided little improvement to my osteopenia. My last bone density test indicated a continued deterioration in my left hip and spine. F 68 10 years

1  osteopenia/vertebrae fracture I experienced multiple health issues including: undiagnosed long term toothache (elective root canal--no change) severe sudden onset TMJ, Reflux effecting my larynx (specialist said is was the worst he'd ever seen; Burning Mouth Sydrome; Heart Palpitations; high blood pressure; joint pain. Many expensive tests and doctors and dentists, not to mention the worst year of my life, with no solutions. An informed CNA suggested Fosamax could be causing my jaw problems. When I stopped Fosamax, all symptoms disappeared over a couple of months. In my opinion, Fosamax is poison. Cardiologists, dentists, internists, etc, need to know about the side effects of this dangerous drug. In retrospect, it's hard to believe not one of the many professionals I saw put the dots together. I am so grateful for the internet and the information available--it has saved my life. em, 1/1/09 F 68 10 months
