FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  osteopenia Joint pain and constant heartburn- two conditions that I hadn't experienced prior to taking Fosamax. My doctor wanted me to take other medications to treat those symptoms. Instead I stopped taking the Fosamax. I'm starting to feel a lot better. The heartburn is completely gone. Anyone experiencing adverse reactions to Fosamax should contact the doctor so that doctors become aware of the prevalence of these complaints. F 60 10 months

1  to improve bone density as prescrib Started with lower abdominal pain. Went on to nausea and muscle weakness. Transient flu like symptoms. Off and on for 2 weeks. Sometimes I feel normal and then it hits me again. Tingling sensation in forearms. Inability to focus. I only took one weekly dose of 35 mg, but the symptoms came on almost immediately. Does anyone know how long it takes for the drug to leave your system? F 60 1 weeks

1  bone loss After being on it over a month, my teeth started bothering me. I quit taking it after two and a half months. My teeth got to hurting me worse. Two months later, I could hardly eat my teeth hurt so bad. Eight months after being off of it, my teeth and gums still hurt some. My dentist said that I didn't show any loss of bone. Taking bone meal with vitamin D has helped me a lot. I am also going to take strontium and magnesium. I haven't had this problem before so Fosamax is the only thing that I feel could have done it. She had given me Celebrex and Elavil too. I don't think they hurt me but I quit taking them too. I would give anything if I had not taken it. I am scared that I will keep having problems with my teeth hurting. I have got to have a root canal done and am afraid to have it. From reading some of these letters, I am afraid to have it pulled.  1  "At risk" bone density test result I was given samples of Fosamax to try. Within twelve hours after taking my first pill, I experienced severe pain in right hip that lasted about 3 days. Second pill had same result. I'm done with Fosamax. F 60 2 weeks

5  osteopenia None With 18 months of starting Fosamax my bone density had improved almost into the normal range. At this time, my doctor is considering a Fosamax 'holiday' due to side effects of long-term use involving the stomach and esophagus. F 59 11 years

5  Osteoporosis I started 2 weeks ago. Only side effect nausea and cough like choking. I took Fosamax for 7 years before in 2000 was all good. Truly helped me. Perhaps these nausea symptoms will subside. I was told I have severe Osteoporosis and pain in bones alot worse without Fosamax. No choice F 59 2 weeks

4  Osteopenia Luckily I have no reaction once-weekly when taking Fosamax 70MG. Take pill then work out one hour on recumbent & incline-treadmill. Not sure if Fosamax (and/or Zocor 20MG) contributed to below: 1) Root canal (R bottom) possibly fr Fosamax OR due to large filling~. Slow healing then pain in area persisted for four years 2) Gums seem more recessed in last few years. Always had great gums & took good care of teeth. Floss at bedtime, brush 2x day 3) Bilateral Chronic Achilles Tendonitis for 2+ years 4) Tender all over to the touch past four years At first 2 year Bone Density check, Fosamax had moved range from Osteopenia into low-normal. At every 2 year density check, I slightly gain bone mass or remain unchanged. I have taken NO BREAK from Fosamax. Should I? Drank lots of milk during younger years, took plenty of Calcium during my 30-40s. Age 34 ovarian cancer - right fallopian and ovary removed. Age 38 periods stopped. I was prime to get osteoporosis. Not sure whether to stop Fosamax. I was told by prominent doctor in Jan2010 that Fosamax is now CAUSING fractures. What have you all heard on that front? F 59 7 years

3  Osteopenia After 5 years and lots of exercise and calcium, my bone has density improved from osteopenia to low normal. But I then developed extreme aching in hips and legs after I went to bed. So bad I would wake up and not go back to sleep. Some stretching and repositioning helped a little. So after six months of misery and some further reading about Fosamax, I stopped taking it. After two months my pain had reduced about 50%. Then went to orthopedist who treated me for bursitis in one hip with s shot, prescription NSAID and physical therapy. Indicated I had mild arthritis in both hips but none of this would cause the overall leg/muscle/joint ache I was experiencing. I have now been off Fosamax for 4 months and have no further joint or muscle ache at night. While Fosamax did its job combined with my diligence on the exercise and calcium, the potential side effects are real. My doctor and I had already discussed taking me off Fosamax and trying a yearly intravenous treatment. I just took myself off a little early. We'll discuss what to do next during my next annual check-up. My mistake was not taking calcium and exercising during menopause. Encourage all women how critical those calcium supplements are to their bone health. F 59 5 years

3  Doctor recommended I have some arthritic conditions in my feet, but the stiffness in my hands, arms and legs and not being able to walk once I get up from a chair for a few seconds has me very frustrated. These symtoms seem to have showed up since I started taking Foxamax 6 months ago. My Eyes are dry and that to seems to have become worse in that same time span. I would like to quit taking the drug, to see if my pain goes away. I just don't want to loose every thing that I might have gained in additional bone. I also notice that my complexion is not the same as before. F 59 6 months

3  osteopenia Skin itching, very sensitive to the sun (it feels like I'm standing too close to an open fire, my skin turns red and then clears up once I'm out of the sun) Seemed to be working somewhat until this year's bone density test as I now have osteoporosis. Am concerned about brittle bones after recent reports. Also have experienced some of the eye problems and aching as reported by others. F 59 5 years

3  Small loss of bone Noticed right away my Sciatic pain increased measureably to the point I wanted to cry! I kept taking other pain killers and I also had 3 shots in my back for pain! Although the shots helped pain did not completely go away. I ran out of it for a few days once and noticed my pain lessened quite a lot! Then I started taking the once a week pill. The pain came back with a vengence! I could hardly move at night to the point I didn't want to get out of bed to go to the bathroom because I knew when I got back into bed I would be in excruciating pain! Not that laying in bed helped the pain. Trying to go back to sleep with the pain was not easy. Now my doctor is retiring and I ran out of the pills and to be honest I DON'T want to take them again! For the first time in a long while I can go to and get out of bed without severe pain! I wouldn't recommend it if you have a sciatic nerve problem! I feel SO MUCH better now and I can move around with little pain, although the sciatic pain is by no means gone it SURE is livable now! Oh yes, I too also have a problem with my ankles cracking and feeling stiff in both my feet and hands. F 59 3 years

2  osteopenia I have taken Fosamax for three years and my recent bone density test showed that I am now in normal range. However, my whole body hurts! We bought a new mattress set because my back hurt so much every morning, but that didn't help. Recently, my wrists have been so painful and my hands have no strength. I can hardly sit down and then have a hard time standing again, because my knees hurt. The muscles in my legs and arms are also sore. Today, I finally went to the doctor and told him that I felt very sorry for myself with all the aches and pains. He decided that perhaps the Fosamax could be causing the problem and has told me to stop taking it for four weeks. After visiting this website, I am starting to think that this may indeed be the problem. F 59 3 years

2  osteoperosis I did not attribute ANY to fosamax..thought it was just aging. Now, I see: terrific cramps in all extremities. and actually ALL muscles. Especially my hands and feet. bloating, gas.. inability to digest certain foods, loss of energy I was taking evista for osteopenia. During this time, I developed reynauds symdrom.. which I never associated with anything except fate. ( Doctors had no suggestions either) After one year, during which time my osteopenia blossomed into osteoperosis, During this time, I developed plantar faschitis ( but I have bad feet so never associated it ..but now reading reports I wonder...) My gyn perscribed Fosamax. I have been taking it for years now, probably more than 6. crippling cramps in my hands, and feet especially.. ( when I brake suddenly in the car, I generally have to pull over to try to work out the pain in my foot ) I was sent to rheumatoid arthritius doctors, had blood tests etc, I was told to 'live with it' I also found I could no longer eat certain foods.. beans, bananas, I had 'flatulance' ..read that these things happen to aging women ! I have always had muscle pain and joint pain and arthritus runs int the family. now I wonder about all of this. I stopped taking fosamax a week ago, and wonder if I will lose any of these symptoms. My dr perscribed boniva. I got the perscription filled yesterday, ($$) and now after finding this site, I won't take it. Osteoperosis is no joke..my mother had it, my sister has it, is there no help for us that won't ruin our lives in another way ?? by the way, fosamax really helped my bone density.. I thought it was a godsend. Has anyone else experienced this twisting and cramping of fingers and toes etc.. spasms?? F 59 6 years

2  fractured hip at age 54!! Occasional transient bone pain. Diarrhea.. I took fosamax for 2 years after my hip fracture at age 54[!] and subsequent diagnosis of moderately severe osteoporosis. Result was WORSE bone density and I was switched to forteo for 2yrs.[ Scary, but I was freaked out at the test results- I also have balance problems due to M.S. and am so afraid of falling again] Now my bone density has improved and I'm supposed to start actonel monthly. Plus of course the always present calcium and Vit D regimen. And exercise. F 59 2 years

2  Low bone density After taking it once a week for 5 weeks I have stopped taking it to see if my chest discomfort and swallowing problems are related to Fosamax. It is a month until my next dr. appointment but I may have to reschedule it sooner. I have read about a problem called F 59 5 days

2  osteopenia I have been taking Fosamax 70ml once week for 6 weeks and I've suddenly developed TMJ. I did some research and found that TMJ is now recognized as a side effect of Fosamax. I would go to and read about Fosamax. This is a very informative site. F 59 6 weeks
