I'm extremely healthy, don't drink alcohol at all, no substances in my body ever, work out 5 days per week, and eat as healthy as anyone could. Every morning for 3 weeks. I've been taking Flonase, the new version that has no scent and comes in a white bottle with a blue lid, for roughly 3 weeks before I had the unthinkable happen to me in the middle of a work meeting. That morning after taking my normal dose I felt a bit groggy; not like myself. I was struck with extreme anxiety and had a full blown panic attack that crippled me. The side effects got worse over the next few days where I was stuck in psychosis. The true term for this type of reaction to a steroid is call "steroid psychosis." It all started where I was having GI tract issues, which I've never experienced before but never made the connection back to Flonase. I had changes in my stools, felt like I needed to make a bowel movement but couldn't, and would ping pong back and forth between diarrhea and weird shaped stools over the next 3 weeks. The day I experienced extreme anxiety with the feeling of depersonalization with a distorted reality was when I knew something was wrong psychologically. Palpitations, anxiety attacks, went to ER multiple times for racing heart, brain fog, cognitive issues, memory issues, insomnia, sweating feet and palms. | Took for over year was good at first. Then I thought I had a rare illness. I had so many issue. I did not make the connection until coming accros people who said they experienced the same. Stopped the Flonase. Been off it for 10 days and while I still have some issues they are significantly decreased. I saw others say it could fake a few months to get back to normal so hoping I feel better as the weeks go on. Always sneezing, runny nose etc.. He prescribed me this and it was amazing, it cleared my sinus issues in no time. Fortunately I figured out that taking childs dosage maintained the effect (1 spray per nostril a day) which I'm hoping might have minimized any long lasting damage. The past 7 years I've struggled with anxiety, and later depression. The anxiety has been consistent, with the brain fog. I could never put my finger on it, I just felt off. I went to my GP a few times over the years. Each time I was prescribed SSRI medication which never helped. Never once was the spray brought up. And foolishly I never considered it and the correlation either. Well I've been off the thing for about 8 weeks now. I've never felt so "sharp" is the only way I can say it. Cognitively I'm working better, articulating better, I'm calmer, less anxious, more positive.. the depression seems to have subsided. I have been an inconsistent, unstable mess the past 7 years on and off with mental health problems and brain fog. I'm frustrated that I didn't realize this sooner or that my gp didn't advise. But it is what is.. I have a extreme caffeine sensitivity as a result now. I am also very sensitive to medicine all of a sudden and I am stuck taking only paracetamol, anything else triggers anxiety. Corticosteroids deplete your electrolytes as well as other nutrients. If you look up electrolyte imbalances you will see your symptoms correspond. I started eating 6-8 cups of cooked vegetables a day and taking some mineral supplements, i felt better immediately. I do think supplements only need to be used briefly as consistent use will throw off your electrolytes further. All you need are vegetables, celtic salt, grassfed meat (if you can) and spring water. These are all high in minerals and vitamins. Your body will do the rest. You will get better. For no reason, do not take this medication. The side effects are absolutely not worth it. But I did recover, though it turned my life upside down for three months+. | When all these symptoms occurred I had been on the medication for just a few days. I did not put the two together for many years until I used Flonase again had the exact same symptoms. I thought I was just having some sort of extreme, postpartum anxiety episode, but that was not the case which was later confirmed. I did recover after several months and many therapy sessions and working with naturopathic doctors. The best things to help this are adaptohenic herbs to calm the adrenals, like Ashwagandha, magnesium, GABA, or L-Theonine. New symptoms of adrenaline surges, night wakening to fight/flight, intense fear (of being alone, of leaving the house, of driving, etc.), dark, intrusive thoughts - completely irrational. Thought I was going crazy! I did a Google search of side effects and initially found the common side effects before finding this blog. So many of the posts resonate with me. My doctor had never heard this before. Feeling crazy again not getting any affirmation from my doctor. By this point my mental confusion, difficulty concentrating, a sort of low buzzing in my head - feeling like I was in a tunnel, and not being able to remember what I just said 2 minutes ago were debilitating. I stopped cold turkey. This is STEROID PSYCHOSIS!! Look it up. You will find the medical info. That confirms everything people have described in this blog. This has medical and psychiatric diagnoses with ICD-10 and DSM codes that doctors can bill for. I’m sharing this so you can research the medical side. It helps to have a name for this horrible event. Please be encouraged and take good care of you. Though some people suffer the effects permanently, most fully recover. I probably have left some things out due to the lack of concentration right now as I am withdrawing from Flonase. | I have been trying to figure out what is going on with my body. Have done so many blood test and nothing came up. My last blood test was the ACTH for adrenal and pituitary issues to see if it could possibly be Cushings disease or Addisons disease the test showed no issues. But before this blood test I had to stop medication that had corticosteroid (Flonase) which I started reading more about and its side effects. I did not believe that they were giving me the full picture of side effects. I finally saw this site and realized how dangerous this stuff is. I will never take this stuff again. It really does make you feel crazy or like you are going crazy.
