LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  To shrink the prostate Some mild hot flushing, mostly at night. Loss of libido and a restless feeling sometimes. Frequent urination at night. I was given the 4 month shot to shrink the prostate in preparation for a radioactive seeding procedure. My cancer is early - T1. If the prostate doesn't shrink sufficiently, I'll have to undergo 8 weeks of daily external beam radiation which is more damaging to the tissues than the seeding procedure. M 70 5 weeks

1  uterine hemoraging/adenocarcinoma I had 2 injections Dec.27, 2004 and again Jan. 19, 2005 I was diagnosed with uterine cancer on Feb. 21, 2005. I had 2 weeks of heavy bleeding in between and when the Dr at emergency checked my hemoglobin was at 81.Side effects started with tingling altered sensation in my hands up to my shoulders and feet up to my ribs. Other side effects were severe muscle spasms and pain in my muscles and joints, eyes sensitive to light staggering walk, dizzy, unbalanced and I feel like I am going to fall down. I have occasional double vision, very little sence of smell and taste and some of my favorite foods now taste terrible. I have acne, my nails have little ridges from side to side, my hair was curly and appears to be less so.I have headackes, and sore tender breasts, a lot of shaking and fatique. Short term memory problems lots of anxiety and crying. Todays date is Dec. 6th 2005 and my neurologist told me today that these symptoms are probabley permanent but that he cannot say or won't say t Please contact me if anyone has any suggestions for me. I don't know what to do,,, I cannot work like this and we live on a very limited income..... I used to be able to work and contribute to our household.I was told that I would have a few night sweats from these injections. Do you think these side effects are permanent? Is there any suggestions or any compensation? F 53 4 weeks

5  Endometriosis Hot flashes MAJOR!! And big time lack of sex drive...which is SOOO no like me!! weight gain in the abdominal area, kind of like a guys beer belly :( I found my miracle drug!! I'm 27 Y.O and have had endometriosis for about 10+ years...severe bleeding to the point that I'd pass out, severe pain to the point of missing school and work, it was miserable...then my Dr. told me about Lupron and I agreed to take the regimen. Ends up that's just what I needed, I took my last of 6 shots October 29th and I'm now waiting to see what will happen now, I haven't restarted my menstrual cycles to know if there will be any pain but that's definitely not a problem, I just wish the sex drive would come back SOON, and so does Hubby!!  5  had partial hysterectomy-endo / lack in sex drive- hot flashes -but I take hormones so I don't have those.. bloating for three days after I have shot.. I had a partial hysterectomy but because I was only 27yrs he wanted to keep my ovaries- After 5 mths of bad swelling of my left side and very bad yeast infections the week before (when my period use to be.) The doctor put me on lupron and all of the swelling and infections went away.. I love this med. it has allowed me to live again after 7mths of Hell --- I can only be on it for 3years(almost there) then I'll have to go and get my ovaries removed --which is scary since last time it took so long for me to feel better. If anyone reads this and has any suggestions please e-mail me at [email protected] Thanks F 30 2.5 years

5  Adenomyosis Hot flashes, sweats, impossible weight loss My primary care physician warned me that lupron caused weight gain....still, I'd glad I'm taking it. I've been on it for about a year and I feel great. Though I have gained considerable weight. I was cramping and bleeding severely. The Lupron injections have put a stop to both. I'd take the hot flashes any day over that horrendous pain!! F 35 1 years

4  Severe Endometriosis On 3.75 mg, none complete happiness, which i took for 6 months, on 7.5mg I have started another period after only two weeks of having a period on the first month of the first shot. You have to remember that this drug puts your body into menopause. Thus, if you are experiencing all of these symptoms its a good indicator of how it will be when you are actually in menopause F 20 7 months

3  Anemia, Fibroids, bleeding Hot Flashes and night sweats, worsening body aches (legs and back), joint pain, tiredness, weight gain, hard to exercise with these joint pains but I do regular yoga It stopped all bleeding and allowed me to recoup on my iron levels and it's great not having a period. I am thinking that I will now quit the drug and have a hysterectomy. It feels too risky to keep up this joint pain. Lupron is useful for some people in some situations, but one has to weight the positives with the side effects. F 50 8 months

5  Hemmorhaging From Fibroids Hot flashes and sweating. Bone pain first 3 months, none thereafter. I was somewhat "wired" from the Lupron also. I took calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D every night faithfully. I also took 5 mg. daily Provera. F 50 2 years

2  Endometriosis Severe problems with the intial "flare-up" (for me the first 10 days). Much effort needed to keep on functioning. Beware of the temporary high estrogen when exercising: injuries to ligaments are more likely to occur, as they are around ovulation, perhaps even more so during the flare-up phase. I almost didn't take this drug because of all the negative things I had read about it. I wondered: why so _many_ negative experiences? Still I expected it would all go well. But as of yet, it doesn't. If it changes I will add a new rating. No effect on the endo pain yet at 17 days. No true hot flashes, just an uncomfortable feeling of warmth in my face now and again. Lots of trouble sleeping, waking up frequently. Acne and oily skin are the same as with progestin or Danazol treatment. Apparently it can take up to 2 months to experience a beneficial effect, which is a lot of time for a treatment that can't be used for a very long time or repeated often. It is also very expensive and I doubt that the investment (both in money and effort) is worth it. F 40 17 days

4  Endometriosis/Infertility Hot flashes, night sweats and acne. I had the 3 month injection, and it hasn't been too bad. The hotflashes really have been the worst of it. I was really afraid of the weight gain, I haven't experienced any and I am about half-way through. All and all, I can't complain. F 28 3 months

5  Severe Endometriosis Vertigo a couple days after injection, sparatic acute ovarian pain for a couple days after injection....all has subsided so far after a couple days. I have a severe case of endometriosis of which most was laser cut during my laparoscopy in September 2005. The pain prior to my surgery was so severe I was unable to work for 3 months. So far I have had 2 injections of the Lupron in a series of 12. My doctor wants me to stay on it for at least 1 year, because of the severity of my endometriosis and the pain that it causes. I haven't had any mood swings, emotional days or hot flashes and Script Assist attributes that to the fact that I was already on Lexapro (anti-anxiety - seratonin inhibitor). I started losing weight before the injections because of nausea and loss of appetite caused from my excruciating pain, but have lost another 8 lbs or so since starting the injections. (30 lbs to date). Not sure if it did, but I hope this helps someone. F 26 2 months

4  Endometriosis Hot Flashes, extreme weight gain with inability to loose any weight, depression, anxiety Even with the side effects, I would prefer dealing with them more than the 14 years of agony I went through before I was diagnosed and put on the lupron therapy. After almost three years on the shots, I will still go religiously every 12 weeks for the shot until I decide to try to conceive. The first three months of the shots are the worst. After that you are so used to everything that the side effects don't seem that bad anymore. F 26 2.75 years

4  Breast Cancer - estrogen related Hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, fatigue, severe joint pain, substantially decreased sex drive, vaginal dryness, severe mood swings and weight gain. I hate that I have to be on this drug. I swear the first 3 months I was going crazy. After my first 3 shots I was an emotional mess for at least 24 hours, crying uncontrollably. I have had four shots now, and have gained 20lbs even though I eat well and excerise. When I get out of bed I feel like an old women. The joint pain is to the point were I will have to start taking pain meds. Hot flashes can kiss my ass. I haven't slept in 4 years(Between chemo, radiation and Lupron) Although I have found that sleeping naked with a fan directly on you with a light down comforter has made it a lil better. I only wake up 4 times instead of 20! I was never moody, now you never know what you might get! And the decrease in sex is killing my boyfriend! F 29 1 years
