LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  ENDOMETRIOSIS tried, non stop bleeding, headache, left side pains, I have been on Lupron Depot for two months, next week will be my third injection. I can't say that there has been any improvements, my doctor has not proven to me that this medicine is helping. The first week after having the injection I felt great by the end of the second week I can barely walk. Was taken back add therapy, I stop taken it in hopes that I will quit bleeding faster. Not to many hot flashes, more cold flashes and crying than anything. I was told by my doctor that by the fourth injection I should have no more constant bleeding. My endo was found when I had a ectopic pregnancy in Feb/ 2007. I'm hoping this medication will help me shrink the endometriosis so that my husband and I can add to our family in a year or so. I'm trying not to give up on the medication, however the non stop bleeding is bring me down. F 32 2 months

2  endo body aches, dizzyness, feeling light headed, weight gain, tiredness, anxiety, headaches, vaginal dryness I am currently on my second three month round of Lupron and just started feeling some of these horrible side effects. At first I wasn't sure what was wrong and why I was feeling this way until I did some research on line and realized that all of these things that I am feeling are side effects. I feel horrible. I ache like you would not believe, am very tired, have gained so much weight that my stomach actually hurts from it. I have had some relief from the pain but still continue to have periods and we all know with that comes pain. At this time I am not sure if I will do another three month round or not. I am going to continue to do more research that is forsure. Glad to know I am not alone though. F 35 5 months

3  Endometriosis hot flashes, insomnia, joint pain, and headaches I have been on Lupron for 6 weeks so far. I got the 3 month injection for stage IV endo. So far I have not had any pelvic pain. Around week 3-4 I started having hot flashes and a headache that wouldn't go away for 2 weeks. The side effects do stink on this med but anything is better than the severe pelvic pain I had even after surgery. Make sure to do a lot of research and see if it is right for you. Hopefully I will start add back therapy soon. These hot flashes are killing me! F 29 6 weeks

4  large fibroid; critical hemoglobin fatigue After reading these, I'm still waiting for the 'other shoe to drop' and find myself growing a third ear :). Caution is the key, but my experience has been no side effects yet except fatigue, which I cannot preclude from being from the critically low hemoglobin. I was given the 3-month dose (11.25). My goal is to NOT have a hysterectomy but only fibroid removal. It is too large currently for myomectomy alone, plus I would have to be transfused prior to having surgery. My blood loss definitely stopped (at least to this date.) It's early in treatment, so I can report more thoroughly at a later date. F 48 2 weeks

3  endometriosis extreme weakness and fatigue, flare up in acid reflux, lower blood pressure than my normal, feeling very shakey, bladder problems. I was on lupron for 6 months about 3 years ago and it was amazing. I felt better in that 6 months than I have in years. The horrible cramps and hormones were crazy again 3 months after I stopped the shot. Then I had surgery June 06 and have felt like crap ever since. I am now on my 2nd lupron shot and was admitted to the hospital last week for internal bleeding. I have been weak, dizzy, light headed, constipated and can barely make it to the bathroom because of the bladder symtoms I have had since I started lupron again. I do not know if the weakness and internal bleeding (due to acid reflux mainly) are because of the lupron, but I was feeling better a few days after I was released from the hospital and Wed. I got my 2nd shot and the syptoms are all returning again. BE CAREFUL WITH THIS SHOT!! It can be a life saver, but after reading people's horror stories and feeling the way I have been feeling lately wether it is related to the lupron or not, I am finished with this shot and would F 28 5 weeks

5  Fibroid, heavy bleeding and anemia No side effects, felt great on the Lupron. I had energy again and was able to work out and lose some weight. I had a total of 3 shots to shrink a large fibroid before surgery. The doctor originally thought he might have to do a hysterectomy because of the size of the fibroid and location. But because of the Lupron, it did shrink and that is all he removed. My hemoglobin went up before the surgery since I had no periods and I was able to work out again. The doctor said it was successful becase I was in good shape and lost 14 lbs before the surgery. I feel so much better now!!! F 40 3 months

3  severe endometriosis Weight gain, spotting after first monthly shot. Had 5th shot on May 15th because taking Lupron stopped the constant bleeding and alleviated the severe pain. Chose not to have radical hysterectomy, booked for May 1st, due to bowel involvement and to continue on Lupron; however, after my last shot, i got PNEUMONIA within 24 hours. Has anyone else come down with pneumonia right after the shot? F 50 5 months

3  Prostate Cancer Hot Flashes, some leg pain, some fatigue, some mental fuzziness, increased night urination. Haven't had more than 3 hours of sleep consecutively since injection 3/6 PSA level 29, Gleason 7-10, CAT scan and Bone scan ruled out metastasis. DaVinci Prostatectomy scheduled 6/18. First symptom was leg pain that lasted a few weeks, but went away. Hot flashes are biggest negative. Dr. tried Clonidine, but didn't seem to help. I was very active before the injection (running 10-15 miles/week plus lifting weights). Continue to run and lift weights 4 days a week(with a some loss of endurance and strength, but not bad) Due to increased sweating, I have to make sure my fluid levels are kept up. Changed diet completely, no red meat, a lot of soy, fish, grains, juice. Lost 12 lbs. and feel pretty good. Some days I seem like I can go pretty good, but then hit a wall and am wiped out, but I just go with it and wait until I feel better. Don't know what rating to give the drug, since my PSA won't be tested until after the surgery. I have faith in the course of action my Dr. is taking and hopefully will report back the results.  4  Large Uterine fibroid- pidaua I have been on Lupron now for 2 weeks. I posted earlier (see under pidaua) and the only other side effect I can add was another period that began 7 days after the first injection. It lasted only 5 days but was heavier than normal. I felt wiped out, but that may be due to lack of sleep because of the stress of my husband being in Iraq. I have to encourage people to take their vitamin supplements and get exercise even if you don't feel up to it. Yoga and lots of walks have helped me tremendously. My lower abdomen does not feel full and my body is getting back to the shape it was in before the large protrusion caused by the fibroid. I believe that those with fibroids have an easier time that those with endometriosis. Then again, there will always be some that complain about any medicine under the planet because they are against pharmaceutical companies. Be informed. M 37 2 weeks

3  Endometreosis Severe hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, trouble sleeping, headaches/migraines. Extreame fatigue. I have been on Luporn Depot shot now for 2 months. Previously, I have had an thermal abalation, 1 laproscopic surgery to remove leasions, and now this shot. After about the first month and a half, I had no more pain, however, the side effects are a little extreame. I already have been on Cymbalta, clonapin for depression and anxiety. I am about 10 days away from my third shot, and I am going to ask for add back therapy, my Dr said she can give me a little bit of estrogen to help with the side effects. So I am going to try that. I really hope it works, especially for the night sweats, and hot flashes. F 37 2 months

2  Severe pain/possible return of endo Extreme nightsweats, hot flashes, weight gain/bloating, moodiness. My GYN said the Lupron injection is the treatment of choice now instead of laparoscopy for endo. So far I can't see the benefit of this medication over laparoscopy (I've had two surgeries over the years with no complications.) Would love to know how Lupron, with all these unwanted side effects, is supposed to be better than laparoscopy. At least with laparoscopy, you have a quick out-patient procedure with a relatively short recovery time. Instead, I'm now regretting that I agreed to the Lupron and have wasted the past year with gaining weight, clothes don't fit, I'm extremely moody, my hair is falling out, I can't sleep, I'm still in pain, AND STILL on pain medication. I can't help but think that it's been a waste of time so far. In addition, since I can't start back on the pill for birth control AND I'm not having a period, it's either use an alternative birth control method or just forget about having sex at all until this is finally over. With all the negative side effects, sex h F 42 6 months

4  endo Hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia - woke up every two hours, loss of appetite, anxious I just completed my 6 month course for endo. Lupron has been the only thing that has helped give me relief. I have been pain free since I started. I have been very happy with the outcome. Before - I lived my life on advil, motrin, heating pads and whatever else I could find to give me relief.Lupron has been great for the relief of pain. The side effects are frustrating and irritating, but I feel better and that is what counts. I just had to gut up and push myself through the side effects. I slept with a fan on my face at night , carried a mini fan in my purse for the day , always dressed in layers and took a antidepressent to help with the mood swings. I did not gain weight - if anything I lost weight due to no appetite. F 34 6 months

2  Severe Endometriosis Horrible hot flashes, night sweats, severe headaches, fatigue, loss of coordination, fumbling, severe depression, suicidal thoughts and mood swings....vaginal dryness, constipation, joint soreness.... I have only been on this treatment for about a month (one injection) & I started noticing these symptoms immediately.I never have a comfortable body temp-Im either hot or cold.Wake up soaking wet from night sweats, and I have never had my joints and muscles be so sore.I also have never had migraines but am now experiencing them almost daily, along with vaginal dryness and constipation!I feel like I have a loss of coordination.I had already been taking high doses of anti-deppressants & anti-anxiety meds before the treatment (450 mg Wellbutrin, 150 mg Effexor, Atarax) but now my mood swings are even worse & Im having suicidal thoughts and crazy crying spells. Im very nervous to continue with the next 5 treatments.I guess Im thinking that I have already been living with Endometriosis for almost 10 years and maybe the endo is easier to deal with than the side effects!Im worried that these will be long term side effects. Anybody have advice on whether or not I should continue? F 28 1 times

1  Endometriosis EXTREME Fatigue, Heahaches, Dizzyness, Nausea, Hot Flashes, Night Sweats & Moodiness The first 2 injections weren't too bad - they caused fatigue, hot flashes & night sweats. However, injections 3 & 4 caused EXTREME fatigue, dizzyness, nausea, headaches, hot flashes and moodiness. I'm NOT going to take injections 5 and 6. F 35 4.5 months

3  Severe Endometriosis, Cysts Weight gain (15 lbs), night sweats, depression, anxiety, mood swings, sleeping problems, fatigue, joint pain, memory problems—my mind just doesn’t work as fast! I just hope this works. The side effects have been awful but it will be all worth it if it helps me conceive. I have had ovarian pain the whole time and my Dr. wants me to have another surgery. Won't that cause more scar tissue? Isn't the Lupron supposed to shrink the stuff they weren't able to get? This last month I have taken Lexapro for depression/anxiety. Its really helped me feel more normal and not as crazy. I feel soo much better. I'd recommend this to other people while on Lupron. F 25 7 months

4  Endometriosis headache (pretty bad at times), Minor hot flashes, no appetite I underwent a partial hysterectomy at 26 to stop excessive bleeding. Also had ovarian cyst's and endo. Three months later had to have my right ovary removed. Now almost six months later still have severe pain from the endometriosis with only one ovary in me! Just started Lupron yesterday and so far I love the results! Any one else already had a hysterectomy??? F 27 1 days

1  Adenomyosis/endometriosis OMG the hot flashes are terrible, especially at night, I have so much trouble sleeping, I have trouble eating in the morning, I still fell my cramps, My attitude is so bad! I defintely loss intrest in sex, but that is slowly getting a little better. My stomach always feels full, or nausious. im tired of the who medical condition! I would totally think about all the possible side effects befor taking lupron shot! I hink it's better to deal with the pain than have all the other problem whit a possible treatment, which might not even work for you! I had surgery for nothing, the couldn't see my Endo, think it's in my uterus. I feel like a totally different person. I don't know what happend to me, I HATE who I've become! always wonder if ther are women out there who is going throught what i'm going through, and yes there are lots of us suffering! My doctor didn't tell me about the possible side effects before i got the shot, I read up on it! If i would have know it who put me through meopause ant 22, I wouldn't have taken that shot! I only had 1 shot on Dec. 7, 2006, it is now may 3rd and im wondering when the hot flashes will stop! does anyone know how long untill it's out of my system? F 22 4 months
