LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  Endometriosis severe hot flashes, joint pain, headaches, pelvic pain, bladder pain, weight gain, weepy, super emotional, depressed, decreased sex drive I was diagnosed with mild endometriosis after having a 4cm cyst removed from my right ovary. I dealt with severe pain and multiple emergency room visits from Jan-march2010 until the surgery finally on April 1st 2010. I was symptom free until around June, then started having the same horrible pain again, after more er and doctor visits, there was not another cyst, but the reproductive specialist (we have been trying to get pregnant for 4 years) put me on Lupron for the endo. One shot a month for ^ months. For the first 4 weeks after the first shot, the pain was unbearable, then it started to kick in. I have been relatively pain free for around 2 months, but the side effects are so bad. If I had known it would be more than "A few hot flashes" as my doctor said, I would have thought twice about this. Waking up covered in sweat every hour every night, horrible joint pain in my hips, migraines, extremely emotional. This is so stupid. I should have known that a medication you can only take for 6 months because it causes bone loss would have bad side effects. But I have a total of 6 shots, half way there. So we will see...  5  Endometriosis I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Endo in June of 2010 after having surgery to remove and clean up in there. I was put ont he Lupron Depot shot with add back therapy - three month treatment - one shot every three months. I believe Lupron did help alot! As for the side effects, they weren't too bad....hot flashes were there but tolerable, I was, however, very irritable and moody. I spoke to my doctor who prescribed me a low dose of an anti depressent which helped take the edge off. I was done with my treatment December 20, 2010 and my doctor gave me the option of going on Depo shot or BeYaz birth control....I opted for the BeYaz, continuiously, as one side effect of the Depo shot is at least a 10lbs weight gain. I would recommend Lupron Depot with add back therapy...I truely feel it helped and did take the pain away. F 33 6 months

1  Severe endo. Severe and continual headaches/migraines, never ending muscle pain, hot flashes, chills, nausea, flu like symptoms, severe joint pain (finger, hands, wrists, knees, ankles, toes, jaw, neck, back, hips, etc), significantly increased jaw pain (had previously had several failed TMJ surgeries in 2008 and 2009, and had been feeling relief with physical therapy and pain management...until starting this injection. MUCH WORSE NOW!!!), drastic weight gain (40-50 pounds), mood swings, very emotional, trouble sleeping, tired all the time, severe cramping (like endo returning), although no bleeding since starting shot 4 months ago. My GYN insisted that take Lupron after my recent surgery. I want to have another baby, so to "buy me time" before he does a hysterectomy (this is my 5th endo surgery) I said OK. The side effects have been terrible. The doc denies any side effects could be caused by Lupron, and claims to have never heard of such symptoms. My other specialists say the damage is irreversible, and that I may not recover from the damage to my joints/bones. I have degenerative disc disease, severe arthritis, TMJ disorder (worse from multiple failed surgeries), etc. I was planning to get pregnant asap, but there is NO WAY that I would even want to try for baby when I feel so terrible now. Prior to starting Lupron, my TMJ and arthritis were manageable, and I was feeling great. I haven't been able to work since starting Lupron. I feel as though I have never healed and still have terrible endo pain/cramping. No bleeding though. That is the ONLY positive thing about this. I will update when/IF my symptoms improve. Wish these docs would stop pushing this drug and actually listen when you complain of side effects. The doc says “I’ve never heard of that. That is not related to Lupron” and rush me out the door. You can find ample info online about the negative side effects of Lupron from thousands of people that have been on it, yet they continue to claim there are no side effects. WHATEVER! F 27 4 months

4  Endometriosis minor headaches occasionally. Hot flashes which come and go. I have had my cycle and was PAIN FREE!!!!! I have had severe pain since 2005 and was relieved to not have any pain. The side effects are definitely bearable if you have the type of pain that I did. I was unable to walk or stand and literally spent my cycle in the bed with pain meds that didnt work and a heating pad that did nothing. I hope that the pain does not return and I hope that the endo goes away so that I can work on getting pregnant. F 31 2 months

4  Uterine Fibroids The only side effects I experienced were the hot flashes and slight headaches in the beginning, but that's about it. I was a little hestitate to take Lupron Depot after reading all the negative side effects. I guess everyone body reacts to it differently. I'm glad I went ahead with the injections because it did shrink my fibroids down a lot. My stomach was the size of someone being 5 months pregnant and now it looks about 2 months. I'm happy with the results. I'm scheduled to have a hysterectomy next month. F 39 3 months

4  Stage 4 Endometriosis Hot Flashes, night sweats, fatigue and constant cold/flu, insomnia, slight weight gain, some acne, depression/moodiness. It's been 6 months since I finished lupron for treatment of severe back pain/ pain urinating and unbearable menstrual cramps. While the pain urinating and back pain is much better, I haven't gotten a period yet. My OBGYN honestly doesn't seem to know why I haven't gotten it back and use of progesterone treatments haven't jump started it. I don't really mind not having my period, but it's also disconcerting.  3  ovarian cysts hot flashes/sweating during the first two weeks and some back pain (probable engorgement of the cysts) during the first 2 weeks, increased migraines after a month, acne after 2 months. not much else. i can deal with acne, but those hot flashes are bad sometimes i get the monthly injection, i'm 2 out of 6 months into the procedure so i guess i have to wait to see if this actually works for my cysts.  4  endo nausea, migrain, HOT flashes. There are a lot of negative comments about the shot. I must say the side effects are not fun at all, but I would trade the side effects anyday for the endo pain. It has been sooooo amazing not having the pain. If you have endo and suffer from the same pain then the side effects of Lupron will seem like a very very small price to pay. It has been 4 months from my shot. My only worry is that the pain will come back. Also I have not had a period yet. I am not sure how long that will take. I will post an update when I do start and/or if the pain comes back. I would like to know how long it takes to start your period again because my husband and I would like to start trying for a baby! So if anyone as any info on the after treatment and TTC please let me know. M 28 3 months

3  Uterine Fibriods Joint pain in feet and fingers, hot flashes, strong headaches, anxiety, occasional bloating/gas (may be due to fibroids, though) blood pressure 160/107--never ever been that high! My doctor started me on high blood pressure meds. My doctor suggested 1/month injections for 3 months instead of one big injection in case I had really bad side effects. Good recommendation. I noticed that when I take my antidepressant (Lexapro 10 mg), I don't have hot flashes! The Lupron injections lessened the feeling of pressure in my lower abdomen, which was a big relief. I think it shrank my fibroids. Due to have hysterectomy on 12/06/10. F 49 3 months

3  Endometriosis Hot flashes, mood swings, depression, exhaustion, tachycardia, nausea I was diagnosed with severe endo 6 months ago through surgery. My ultimate goal is to have a baby, which is the main reason I agreed to go on this treatment. For me a baby is the ultimate gift, so I have been using that excuse to deal with the symptoms. I just got my last shot about a month ago, so I do not know how well everything will work. But so far the side effects have been bearable with the right mental attitude. I try not to focus on the bad symptoms, and tried to focus on the end goal, which has helped. F 30 6 months

1  menorrhaghia x11 months I have been having SEVERE pain in my lower leg, behind the knee, behind the thigh, and in the hip. I've done nothing to irritate any muscles, tendons, ligaments. This pain is almost unbearable. No relief no matter what I do. Doctors just blow it off like it's muscle pain, but I had absolutely NO PROBLEMS except excessive bleeding prior to this shot. I have been to the doctors office three times in 22 days, and still have not gotten any resolution. They know that this is part of the side effects of this medicine. I got the Lupron shot along with a Depot Provera shot, which I was told would offset any side effects from the Lupron; IT DIDN'T. I'm still bleeding like a pig!! Only now, I am in agony because my left leg and hip cannot be relieved even with strong pain meds, muscle relaxants, heat compresses, cold packs, and pillows. I have been having this pain for 18 days with no let up. DO NOT GET THESE SHOTS!!! DO NOT GET THESE SHOTS!! DON'T DO IT!!! F 52

1  Endometriosis Severe Depression, Night sweats, Hot Flashes, Mood Swings, insomnia, Forgetfulness, vaginal dryness, constant yeast infections, painful sex, Ovarian Cysts, Hip & knee joint pain, Infertility (POF-Premature Ovarian Failure), Osteopenia I had my injections back in 1994-95 when I was in my 20's. The only side effects I was told about were that I might get a little emotional after about the 4th injection and that I would have some hot flashes that would go away after inj's were stopped. What I ended up with at the time was severe depression, vaginal dryness, night sweats, hot flashes, terrible mood swings. The forgetfulness, depression, insomnia, night sweats and hot flashes never went away after I quit taking the drug. I kept complaining to doctors about it, but they never bothered to test my hormone levels and told me that I was too young to have night sweats and hot flashes and as for the vaginal dryness I should just use KY! I had never had a yeast infection prior to using Lupron now I get them constantly. Finally in my late 30's after complaining to doctor after doctor about these continued symptoms, my husband and I were not able to get pregnant on our own, so we visited a reproductive endocrinologist, I told her of my on going symptoms and she tested my hormone levels right away and diagnosed me with POF(premature ovarian failure) She said the reason for the hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, depression/mood swings all these years was because my ovaries were shutting down, that it was basically like I was going through an early menopause and this was causing my hormone levels to go crazy, at one point my hormone levels were that of an 80 year old woman.  4  Endometriosis, Severe Pain Night sweats, Hot flashes, Loss of Appetite, Excessive Tiredness, Mood Swings, Diarrhea, Very Mild Acne I have only been on this drug for twelve days, but I wanted to write a review anyway. I received a three month injection in one shot; the shot did not hurt at all. I was very tired for the first ten days, then felt amazing on my eleventh day. And then on the twelfth day I wanted to die. I got my period and I experienced more uterine pain then I have ever felt before, but my doctor did warn me that symptoms may be worse within the first two weeks due to how the hormones work. Even though I was in extreme uterine pain, I had no fever, no joint pain, and very minimal bleeding. Usually I would get a fever, joint pain, and such bad bleeding for about three days during my period, after which I would just contend with joint pain and excessive bleeding. The uterine pain was only present for twenty-four hours (thank God), and taking a large amount of ibuprofin combined with a heating pad helped. Already I have hardly any pain with urine and bowel movements, and my bleeding has significantly lessened. I have been experiencing mood swings, but I recognize them, so I can control them. I am also on an add-back drug, Aygestin, and I am thinking that it is helping calm the crazy side effects I have read about. So far, I'm happy. I have experienced Diarrhea, but I've had that for years, since I have gastrointestinal issues. Before Lupron Depo and Aygestin, I already experienced night sweats, hot flashes, excess facial hair and other such undesirables that go with hormone issues. F 30 12 days

5  excessive bleeding w/ large fibroid I suffer from anxiety. Nothing new, it just amplified it. I take an anti anxiety drug when needed. Slight 2-3 minute headaches occasionally. Not bothersome. Lost 4 pant sizes. No other side effects. I had my one month check up today. My doctor said wow! My fibroids were very large, one at 15cm that has already shrunk quite a bit in size. The other 2 are almost completely gone. I spot rarely. Nothing a lite tampon can't handle and not everyday. Before the shot, I bled everyday and at one point was hopitalized for a hemmorage. Lupron Depot has given me my life back. I will take a second shot on Jan. 4, 2011. It is very possible this treatment will put me in permanent menopause with no surgery required. F 49 30 days

4  excessive bleeding due to fibroids Excessive sweating, especially while asleep and in the morning, feel tired at times and not in the mood for sex. I have had only one injection of lupron depot. However, I have also been taking 4Life products (Transfactor Plus, Belle Vie, and BioGenistein Ultra). Today, I went to see my OBGYN. My fibroid has shrank from 7cm to 5 cm. I also had cysts on my ovaries. I had an ultrasound done a few weeks ago and today, my Dr. said I do not have any cysts on my ovaries. I also lost 3 pounds. This month, I haven't gotten a period and probably won't get one but I have had really bad cramps for 4 days and bloating. Dr. still wants to do a laparoscopic hysterectomy. I want to continue taking the lupron shots and will continue on the 4Life regime. I don't know if it is Lupron or the 4Life products that are helping me but I am really happy about it and pray to God that I will not need surgery. F 39 5 weeks

4  endometreosis. pain one bout of severe menopause like symptoms after first shot. hot flashes, nausea, dizziness At age 19 had a abdominal surgery for recurrent endometriosis and severe abdominal adhesions. Did a three month course of Depo Lupron. Immediately after went on Yasmin. Since then I take three months of active pills before having a period. This in theory is to prevent the endo from having a chance to come back. I am 26 now, have no recurring problems, have been scoped again for endo, and they found nothing. I am told that as long as I'm having periods, there should be no concern about having children in the future. F 26 3 months
