LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4  severe endometriosis I just took my 3rd month shot yesterday. Honestly, I only experienced severe pain during my menstrual cycles. I mean it was debilatating pain. It wasnt until I started taking this shot that the pain stopped immediately. No periods, no cramping, mild hot flashes, mild night sweats. Nothing too bad. Sometimes i feel like I am losing my mind, i forget a lot of stuff. Oh and my sex drive is all there, but I am very dry, like shredded wheat. But nothing a little lube wont solve. I am halfway done with the treatment so my prayer is that things will be a whole lot better for me when trying to conceive. I will be getting married in 2 months so a pregnancy after this treatment would be the perfect gift for me and my soon to be husband. i have not experienced any weight gain, maybe some water weight. Overall I am happy with it thus far. The only reason i rated it a 4 was because i am not finished with the treatment so i dont know if it helped me a great deal yet. but i am very satisfied so far n I've noticed in reading a lot of different forums, that the shot seems to have a different effect on women older than 30. I notice in the blogs that they experience a lot of pain and the side effects are far worse. I wonder if this can be a factor in considering taking this medication. One should also take into consideration that there are more negative reviews than positive reviews, so that may be a factor as well. Also I was advised that it is recommended that this treatment be only done once and that this is only a temporary cure, 3 - 5 years. I am a recent survivor of pulmonary embolisms in both lungs as a result of birth control and had fears of taking this medication. I was advised that the hormone that causes the embolisms (like that in BC) is not in this shot, HOWEVER, the pills they give you to ward off the side effects DOES include this hormone and one should not take it if you have had previous issues with blood clots. Even still while on this medication, i am very cautious and pay a lot of attention to cramps and breathing for safety's sake. At the end of the day, there is no harm in trying this medication. I would have went to the end of the world and back to find a cure for the pain i was having. Its always worth a try, but it is never worth your life. Pay attention to the side effects and and your body. GOD BLESS F 27 6 months

5  Fibroid tumors Hot flahes, weight gain, Not sure about headaches I've always had them, but now I have them in my sleep. Saved my job..changed my schedule at work and I now have to be there. I would have lost my job if I had not received that shot. This is March,12 I had my last period March,11 and I could not move. Bleed for 36 hours straight!! OMG what a nightmare. I had just come off of lupron for the second time. I didn't know I could not stop getting the shot since it says 6 months. Figure it didn't work the 1st time, so i got it again. Behind that nightmare 1 year ago. I have not been w/out the shot until now. Couldn't get it this month and I am having all those horrible symptoms again. I pray missing this month doesn't make me have a cycle again. I love Lupron, whatever the side effects, doesn't compare to the pain, headaches and horrible flow. I also read reviews of Lupron and started not to get it. Even after the 2nd round, I read the reviews again and hesitated.-musta been crazy! I got the shot in 4 6month doses. It helped me soooooo much. Because of all the bad reviews I chose the lower 3.75 dosages, maybe the high dosage makes side effects worse. I wanted to ease into the medicine, to try to feel out side effects and stop if I needed to. F 51 2 years

2  endometriosis While on it: hot flashes (nearly froze my family by opening window in winter); headaches (once requiring trip to emergency room); complete and total exhaustion Those are the symptoms that stick out most It's been over 2 years since having the treatment and, while I've had migraines since puberty hit, they've graduated to causing lesions on my brain (I'm going to have my neurologist make sure it's not cerebellar endometriosis, however, to be sure) and I've become forgetful, lost my previously great ability to multi-task and have recently experienced numbness and walking into corners, etc. To be fair, I'm not sure how much of the neurological symptoms have to do with the Lupron specifically but those symptoms have either shown up and/or gotten progressively worse since the treatment. Also, the exhaustion has not gone away really at all. I was told it goes away after about 6 months after the final dose. Over 2 years later, I still fight it and cannot maintain enough energy to get myself back in shape to keep up with my 3-yr old. It has improved a bit but only after having a Reiki attunement and doing self-healings. That said, it's still a significant struggle and my dizziness has increased as I try to get the most of the little energy increase I had. Would I recommend it? Considering that myself and my adopted sister have had these complications with Lupron, I'd advise against it. If a patient feels the benefits to her/his condition outweigh the potential risks, however, I'd advise putting her/his doctor "under the light" and asking every question possible about the risks and side effects. If she/he has any reservations, she/he should go with her/his F 31 6 months

4  Stage 5 Endometriosis I actually had cold flashes and hot flashes. My temp would change often. Had trouble sleeping, would wake up often. No weight gain, however I stayed on my normal exersize routing. I did seem to have an increased apetite which wasnt that great, but tried to control it. I've never really gotten pimples and my face did break out a little bit when I was taking the medication. No loss in sexual desire but i was unusually dry in that area. I had an amazing change in my usual pains. None of the pains that I have always had with Endometriosis. It was pretty amazing to wake up and feel good. My nails and hair also grew very fast on this medication. Im a little upset because when I was deciding if I was going to take Depot Lupron like my doctor suggested I looked on here for reviews and was completly scared out of it. I waited a year and went through another awful surgery until I decided to try it for myself. I have had very positive results so far. Listen, if you feel what I felt over the past 10 years from the Endometriosis getting worse and worse, and the surgeries and the cysts and every awful little side effect that comes with this disease then you'll know that a couple small side effects arent that bad. Maybe it was just me, but I would happily trade my cramps and stabbing pains every time I peed or had sex or exersized for some hot flashes and sleepless nights. Good deal. I have two weeks and my treatment will be over and then I guess I'll see whats next and if it helped in the long run. For the time being I have def. been pain free for 8 months. F 26 8 months

4  Endometriosis Mild hot flashes but nothing debilitating, mild mood swings, increase in pain during the first 3 weeks but I had been warned about that by my M.D., lots of new gray hair. The one major thing I noticed was that I became extremely sensitive to any caffeine intake- I became very shaky, sweaty, and tachycardic (fast pulse) even if I just drank a diet coke, which is something I used to do every day. I must admit, I thought this treatment was going to be a LOT worse. Other than these gray hairs that I have now, I've been fine. I just had my 6th shot last week, so I cannot speak yet about how long it will take to get my cycle back to normal or how long the pain relief will last. I experienced mild vaginal dryness but not too bad; loss of sex drive did not occur for me. I would say I was probably more emotional/moody during the first 2 months of treatment, but leveled out after that. My skin cleared up. It has been a good experience overall. F 28 6 months

1  endometriosis hot flashes, 60 lbs weight gain, acne, fatigue, leg aches, intolerance to temperature, excessive sleepiness (I can sleep for 14 hours straight), inability to lose weight. side effects don't go away...even after 3 years. I took a dose of lupron only once. It did nothing for my pain relief, but it messed me up really well. In addition to suffering from daily pain, I gained 60 lbs and am constantly uncomfortable in my environment because of hot flashes and just not finding the perfect temperature. My legs developed an ache that seems to go down to my bones. It's been 3 1/2 years since I got this stupid shot and I still haven't lost a pound no matter what I try, and I still have hot flashes, leg aches and my sleeping problems. This drug really ruined my life. I was 27 when I took it. Now I have less energy than my 87 year old grandmother. I know I will never have children. I've lost all hope. DO NOT take this drug.  2  Endometriosis, PCOS, Ovarian Cyst NO side effects other than some mild mood changes. I took lupron about 10 years ago when I had only endometriosis. Back then I took it for 6 months and it helped so much with my pain, and my side effects were minimal, I didn't take any hormone replacement therapy, either. Presently, I started lupron again for not only endometriosis, but PCOS and small ovarian cysts (under 2 cm). I started my 3 month shot a month ago and I'm having NO PAIN RELIEF whatsoever. I'm bleeding now, heavily, yet never bled when I took it years ago. If anyone has any experience with lupron and PCOS with OVarian cysts I would appreciate responses if it helped you or not with bleeding and pain. I'm very desperate for pain relief, but don't want a hysterectomy because I'm 33 and may want to have a child. Thanks! F 33 1 months

5  Stage 4 Endometriosis, infertility Mild heartburn for 3 days following my first injection. Mild hot flashes started after my 2nd injection which continued to increase in frequency and intensity. The hot flashes increased following my 3rd injection with night sweats, some insomnia, and some slight changes in irritability. My weight has remained stable and I haven't had problems with acne. I started Lupron Depot 1x/month inj immediately following lap surgery to remove stage 4 endo. My doc's goal was to put me on this med for 3 months to stop estrogen production to allow my body the chance to heal. I had my 3rd injection 3 weeks ago and will be seeing my doctor again next week to discuss the next step towards pursuing IVF. I'm fortunate because I never suffered w/ pain from my endo even though it had bound my organs together resulting in infertility and causing a kink in my bowel. Since starting Lupron, I've had some mild discomfort but nothing intolerable. The hot flashes feel like standing in front of a 400 degree oven when you first open the oven door, but they go away eventually. The night sweats are a nuisance, but I've been able to fall back asleep. I feel irritable at times, but honestly, I made the personal choice to accept that these symptoms are only temporary & this has allowed me to continue living my life without ruminating on how much it sucks to be infertile, to have endo, to have hot flashes as a 34-year old, etc. Remember that the majority of people who write blog entries are going to report their negative symptoms, while the people who don't have the side effects aren't even looking on the internet in the first place. I wanted to put my honest opinion out there to counteract the negative feedback. My heart goes out to anyone who has suffered from this medication. I wish you all the best of luck with your health and fertility:-) F 34 3 months

4  severe endometriosis and pain Hot flashes, night sweats, occasional migraine, 5-10 pound weight gain, severe joint pain (some mornings I dread getting out of bed it hurts so much), forgetfulness, complete loss of sex drive, breast size increase, fluid retention, sleeplessness, increased anxiety It took a few months for the Lupron to even begin to work. Symptoms stayed the same for several months the started to gradually improve. Pain substantially decreased after a couple months. Now there is only a 2 cm cyst left. While the side effects are horrible, it did save me from having another surgery right away (I've had 3 so far). I am looking forward to feeling like myself again and hoping the side effects fade away very quickly!!! F 37 16 months

2  Uterine Fibroid Hot flashes, mood swings, acne, weight gain, (more) pain, nausea, migraines, regular menstrual cycle (which i was told was supposed to stop) After trying 6 different birth controls to attempt to stop my menstrual pain and bleeding associated with the fibroid my doctor "highly reccomended" I try the lupron shot. She told me it was supposed to be a miracle drug and it had a 98% success rate...i however have found myself quite unfortunatly in the unsatisfied 2%. My first 1 month was not awful, I found the hot flashes to be rather entertaining but after jumping on the scale and seeing that I had gained 17 pounds in the first month...it wasn't funny anymore. The last 5 months things only proceeded to get worse. I was using vicodin to try and manage the pain (which I found at times to be even worse than when I started) which was great until the my doctor refused to fill my perscription because "if its not working there must be something else going on" but after reading other testimonies I see I am not alone in the dissapointment. I never had spectacular skin but found my face and back broke out more after using the lupron, my friends have been less than impressed with my mood the past 6 months and I have had a regular cycle the last 4 months, regular as in lasting 7-10 days and very heavy bleeding with lots of pain. I dont say the lupron was a booming success for ME however, with a 98% success rate, your odds of being in less pain are high. F 20 6 months

2  endometriosis, fibroids, cysts I received my first lupron dosage about two days ago and it has been quite miserable. As soon as I got home I was that nauseas I was vomiting. As of now the vomiting has subsided but it will randomly come back as well as the hot flashes which do not help! I woke up in the middle of the night with the worst migraine I have ever had in my life and nothing has helped it/made it go away. impossible to sleep. and the cherry on top of the cake was the fact that I woke up with acne on my face. (mind you I've had next to perfect skin my whole life) and not just a few little pimples like deep deep large painful ones. I am absolutely miserable. F 22 2 days

5  Endometriosis, pain Headaches, fatigue, hot flashes, night sweats, weight gain I just finished my 6 month treatment (1 shot/mo) of Lupron with the last shot being one month ago. I read a LOT of horror stories online prior to taking the drug, but decided that personally, I needed to try it because the benefits could have out weighed the side effects. For me, that was a smart decision. I was in such severe pain. I was on continuous birth control, I had surgery, I took narcotic pain meds, I had cystoscopies and was on the IC diet for months. To say the least, I had investigated other options. I will not down-play the side effects. They are not pleasant. But compared to what I was living with, they are a walk in the park. If you are having mild discomfort and pain from endo, or other issues, think twice before taking this drug. The side effects will probably seem horrific if that is the case. But for me, I will take all those side effects and an extra 30 lbs over the pain and disruption endo was causing in my life. It may be short lived now that the shots are over, but I would do it again if needed and if it will mean keeping all of my organs necessary to conceive. My doctor was thorough in explaining my choices, and I made an informed one. I suggest you do the same for your own situation. F 28 6 months
