LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Endometriosis fibromyalgia, severe muscle pain, muscle cramps, hypotension, rapid heartbeat, syncope, extreme hot flashes , memory issues, extreme fatigue Side effects are still there 2 years after stopping Lupron. European name Enantone. It's a poison. DON'T TAKE IT! 1  menorrhagia Extreme flu-like symptoms occurring once a month, including fever, burning/watery eyes, sneezing, stuffy nose, joint aches, bone pain, extreme fatigue, and sleepiness. I was given a three month shot of lupron in Jan. 2007 as a treatment for my heavy menstrual bleeding. I have already had three blood transfusions because I lose so much blood during my periods and this shot was a quick-fix solution until my endometrial ablation could be performed. While this drug has effectively stopped my periods, they are now replaced with three to four days of flu-like symptoms every month that make it almost impossible for me to function until the "flu" has passed. I have experienced these symptoms every month since the injection and at the exact same time each month that I would normally get my period. It always starts in the evening of the first day with uncontrollable sneezing, burning/watery eyes, and unable to breathe through my nose because of the congestion. By the next morning my body is so achy and in so much pain that I cannot get out of bed and I'm so tired that I sleep for at least 16 - 20 hours/day. I honestly feel like I'm dying. I us F 32

5  large Fibroids A little weight gain, some joint pain This injection has been a wonder to me. I was having periods for 3 weeks at a time. I ended up in the hospital needing 4 pints of blood because my hemoglobin level was so low. I was in constant pain. I found out That I had a fibroid tumor the size of a grapefruit in my uterus. Surgery is not an option at this time because of the size and my low blood. The injection has been a blessing. The few side effects I am suffering from now are worth the ones that have all but ended.  1  Fibroid and anemia No sex drive, vaginal dryness, weight gain, memory loss, emotional, insomnia, panic attack, anxiety, sore muscles, HOT flashes and night sweats This drug was effective at shrinking my fibroid tumors but it has costs me so much more. I do not recommend it. F 39 4 months

5  fibroids/heavy bleeding The first one month shot did nothing for me. The second shot (3 month) totally stopped my heavy bleeding and put me into menopause for the summer with NO hot flashes. The drug shrunk my uterus/fibroids dramatically. I no longer need an abdominal, but can do a vaginal/laparoscopic hysterectomy! Be sure to get insurance preauthorization...it's pricey. F 42 3 months

5  endo Nothing just yet. I only started yesterday, but I feel it has to be better than having severe pain every month. I feel as if I never even had the shot. But like I said I just started it. My ob/gyn said not to do any research on the internet on these sights like this because it only scares you. Everyone is different so I say go for it if your doctor recommends it. If you don't like it then stop taking it. I may even get a reaction later. Nobody knows until you try it. :) F 34 2 days

5  Endometriosis HOT flashes big time!! (not so bad and actually kinda funny to have at the age of 27) Bad headaches (only in the first 2 weeks), decreased interest in sex(decreased, but still there so don't worry :), vaginal dryness (easily fixed), mood swings, and possible depression (not 100% from drug or just life!), some memory loss and a loss of mental sharpness (I hope that goes away..and I'm sure it will) If you have endo and you're suffering with the monthly misery I was experiencing don't be afraid to take this drug...I def was and it has really helped ALOT...I've had no pain and a period free summer rocked. I'm almost done with my treatment(its been about 6 months) and I'm just now starting to feel a little depressed and emotional...I had emotional issues when I was on the pill so I was scared to mess with my hormones again, but honestly I felt great on this medication...some of the things you read online will terrify you, but its really not that bad. I'm mostly annoyed with the whole memory/sharpness loss but is really not THAT bad considering its only temporary...Don't worry the 6 months will fly!!! F 27 6 months

4  Fibroid Causing Urinary Retention The first few weeks I experienced some nausau, but not too bad. Also some water retention in my ankles. I may have a slight increase in incidents of migraines but hard to tell. The shots are not painful, although for a day or two I tend to have a sore muscle at the injection site. At week 5/6 I started to notice that shrinking was happening as my urine flow was much better and I wasn't experiencing retention issues that I have had for four years. I have had only one instance of breakthrough bleeding, but very light. I have now had 3 monthly shots and find this drug quite tolerable. Have night sweats, but already had those anyway, and a bit more hot flashes. Doctor has advised me that maximum shrinkage occurs between 3 and 6 months. Also that you can remain on this drug longer than 6 months with therapy to ensure no loss of bone density. This drug will not cure me, but is allowing me time to shrink the fibroid and make it softer for me to consider mimimally invasive hysterectomy instead of abdominal surgery. That makes this drug worth trying. If you are concerned, ask your doctor for the one-month dosage and not the three-month. I have already had the Uterine Artery Embolization twice. No one ever told me that 20% of women will experience the fibroid generating alternative blood supplies allowing it to continue to grow. So, four years after starting to be catheterized to urinate I am still dealing with this issue. Just realize that after Lupron the Fibroid will grow back unless you have made it over the magic menopause cycle. So for me that means I will need to have surgical intervention once the Fibroid has shrunk. F 47 8 weeks

3  prostate cancer I had one hot flash that lasted for 2 days. Temp went from 101 to 103 and never lower. Loss of energy, easily tired. Lost 20 Lbs. 4 month injection. Wound up in the hospital with internal bleeding. Total confusion and felt like I was watching myself in a movie. At this stage, (40 days) nasty symptoms have for the most part, passed. (my fingers are crossed) The radiologist wants to keep me on this stuff for 2 years!!!!!!!!! Might look into the nearest funny farm to see if there are ex clients there. Is this the way it is supposed to be? PSA 68...Gleason 6, Stage T1c Have not got back any results on the latest PSA test. M 63 40 days

4  Endometriosis bad hot flashes, weight gain(right at 20 lbs. by month 4 of the treatment), loss of interest in sex, lots of headaches, moderate cramping, very moody/emotional. Much like being 5-9 months pregnant again!! But my Gyno. put me on the add back therapy(norethidrone 5 mg) and it has helped tremendously! and not having periods helps out too!!! I really hope it works out, and the shots are not as painful as I anticipated. I go tomorrow for my final 7 month exam,I will find out how much it has/ has not helped. My endo. is accompanied with Polycystic Ovarian, I have been in the E.R. twice for my pain.My pain is so severe with these diseases that when I went into labor I thought I was just cramping, my labor with contractions 5 minutes apart felt much like my monthly, day to day pain. I ended up being in labor for 32 hours!! I had surgery to remove the endometriosis in April of 2005, I was able to get pregnant immediatly ( in June of 2005) but no sooner than I gave birth( in March of 06) the endo. was back, between the severe pain from the endo. and the hope of possibly having another baby one day I started Lupron shots in Jan of 07, with my son being only 9(almost 10) months old. Tomorrow(aug.07) I have my final appointment to see if an additional 3 month treatment will be necessary or where to go from here. F 21 7 months

3  Endo I had my first shot a few weeks ago and I feel just fine! I have no such side effects as many have stated they have had and I might after my next injection but damn, this is way better than a hysterectomy! I am sorry to say this, but someone of the opinions I read really sound like bull! I believe many of you have had some very bad side effects but I believe the ones leaving such bad opinions about this drug after taken one shot, is a bunch of bull! Thank you all for your opinions but I decided to take it! F 35 17 days

1  Stage III Endometriosis Hot flashes, depression, severe dyspnea (weight gain) I only took one shot of Lupron (as it was given to me without my permission while I was still sedated from my lap). While the first week was tolerable, the second week I experienced escalating episodes of breathing difficulty, peaking at around 2.5 weeks after the injection. All I could do was lay in bed in order to control my breaths, and perform basic tasks to take care of myself and my 3-year old son. While this is not a documented side effect of Lupron, it is the only factor in my life that changed that could have caused this. My RE tried to pass it off as panic attacks, but this was not the cause; it was more like exercising and being incredibly short of breath. Five weeks after the shot, I finally began to feel like normal. I had the shot on 6/15 and I still rarely experience this problem. I also began by taking Norethindrone to assist with hot flashes, but had to stop due to feelings of depression. I also had a period two weeks after the shot, even though I had just had a F 30 1 months

3  Severe Endo - Stage IV Extreme fatigue, nausea, no appetite, weight loss, joint soreness, insomnia, hot flashes, body aches, extreme moodiness, constant headache I have had 4 laparoscopies in the past 6 years including thermal ablation for lesions, adhesions and implants. My bladder, uterus and colon are all involved with the endo already closing one tube. I am feeling more and more side effects as each day goes on. I'm on the 3-month injection (2 in 6 months) Still have some pain but nothing to get upset about. Just waiting to see what's next. F 29 21 days

5  Endo I had hot flashes, cried a bit, and had trouble sleeping. The side effects were minimal, and this shot took the endo away for a good three years. I did the three month birth control after the shot, and I was fine for three years, so now I am doing the shot again. I got endo when I was 13, did surgery at 15, got it back immediately, then did the shot. Anyone who is young and afraid of the shot, I understand, but it is much better than the surgery! :-) F 19 6 months

3  Severe Endo and Anemia! Mve some aches in my lower back, hips and legs! Nothing Asprin did not help so far! I have only had one shot on the first of August! I have had some aches in my lower back, hips and legs but asprin at this point has helped me! I am not taking the add back therapy I am actually taking Yaz the birth control pill with as my GYNO says it helps better with the side effects! I came to this website and was horrified and did not want to take this drug and fought my GYNO on taking it. So far so good, but this is justmy first shot so who knows. Here is my journal address. I will on a daily basis note my condition so please come: http://journals.aol.com/narwood25/my-endometriosis-diary/ F 26 8 days

3  Endo, Fibroids, Angio I had my first shot 1 month ago. Pain increased 10 fold. I'm now entering menopause portion, hot flashes, naseous still 90% of the time and now I am getting sad, maybe not depressed but I feel lost and that everyone around me thinks I'm milking this illness to the max, it hurts physically & emotionally, I am slowly improving, but man do you feel horrible in the beginning. I also am starting to feel like less of a woman, i know the hormones will come back i'm only 32 but i'm jealous of "normal" women having babies, 9 months of treatments, i'll have a somewhat healthy body, nothing more. Make sure your doctor tells you all the side effects. Mine promises it will be worth it in the end, but be prepared. My first shot had me in the bed for over a week. F 32 30 days

1  endo/ 7 surguries/ eptopic pregnanc Trying to get my life back!!! Support, understanding and options are our main concern. Please feel free to contact me to discuss. I am a 30 yr young female simple ole me trying to get my life back. I have a huge history of endo and surguries and 16 doctors in 12 years I was actually looking on line for a site that had more info on the lupron because even though i am on my last injection (7 month treatment) i couldnt believe the way i feel is not related to that shot and none of the dr’s or websites i had come across was saying anything more than a few side effects UNTIL last night when i stubled on the same site you did with all of these negative comments. When consulting a lawyer for a misdiagnosis for several months complaining about pain turned out to be a DEAD twisted no blood flow ovary i wanted to sue just to get that dr to brush up on her skills the lawyer said something to me that will stick with me forever "you know what they call a dr at the top of his class?, I was so excited just to know it wasn’t just me going crazy or something else wrong…seems like everyone is going through exactly what I am. the thing is though i wish i had someone to talk to 12 yrs ago. there is so much more to our problem than just the lupron. i would love to talk to you about some of the things i have been through and some of the other people i know now and what they have been through. Not to mention depending on your history so far with this illness makes all the differnce to your strategy to get well. Did you know the doctors don't know where this comes from, they dont know why NJ hudson county has the largest number of women in the state that have been diagnosed with endo. And most of them damn sure dont know what to do about it...i have learned from experience to interview my dr's now by asking a few questions lets you know if they really know what they are talking about. Please give me a call if you like and again you can block your number if that& F 30 7 months
